Subcision For Rolling Acne Scars

Hey,

I've suffered from acne and acne scarring for the better part of 3 years now. I have lost a lot of my confidence along the way and have been researching lots of different ways to reduce acne scars. After plenty of research, i know that I have rolling scars from the cystic acne that I had in my last year of high school, and I also have found out that subcisions are the best way to tackle these types of scarring, mainly due to the tethering of the scar tissue. I have had 3 laser fraxel treatments of which I don't think have really helped much and have tried a little bit of skin needling as well.

I'm very keen to try a subcision as it looks like it will be the most effective way for me to go, and I live in Perth, Western Australia. I haven't been able to find any mention of any doctors or dermatologists in perth that perform this procedure, Is there anyone who might be able to help me out finding a suitable clinic to have the procedure done? I'm am fairly nervous around needles, but am willing to try this procedure if it reduces the scarring I have.

Thanks!

I'm in Australia too... other side of our great land though! I did a search for clinics in Perth but couldn't find anything. How far are you willing to travel? You might have to go interstate. :(

May I ask what kind of skin needling you've tried? And can you describe the severity of your scars? I thought I needed subcision too but since having Dermaroller treatments I've realised I don't need subcision any more. I would seriously consider revisiting the Dermaroller if I were you: http://genuinedermaroller.com.au/find-a-clinic

I haven't thought about doing any procedures inter-state to be honest, although that does get me thinking now. 'Greg098' How much did it cost you for each subcision and do you know if it damages unscarred tissue by having needles under your skin? I just have a derma-roller at home and have done a few treatments from that but haven't yet had a professional do any derma-rolling. I will take a picture of my scars and post them online, they're only really around my two cheeks where I had the acne really bad, otherwise the rest of my face is generally scar free.

Here are the photos, majority of the scarring are on the cheeks. The scars exist more so on the right cheek than the left..

The scars on my left cheek are a little deeper and smaller whereas the scars on the right cheek cover a larger area.

Anyway I'm pretty certain these are rolling scars. Also I tried to take pictures in the harshest light to show the full extent of it all :S

Definitely rolling scars but they're not severe in my opinion. Subcision might be overkill but in the right doctor's hands I think you'd be safe.

Home treatments are ridiculous, no matter what the procedure. Don't risk it. The only thing we should be doing at home is a good skin care regime. Leave the invasive treatments to the professionals. It's frustrating that you need to fork out money for it, and it may seem like an endless battle, but home treatments are the biggest waste of money and time... not to mention the added risks!

The needles they put under your skin during subcision will not harm your normal skin tissue. All they're doing is untethering the underlying scar tissue so your skin can raise up again. Maybe think about adding a Hyaluronic Acid based filler to your treatments? Not sure if Greg has had this or has researched it a bit more.

Hey Greg098 - did you get your subcisions at a dermatologist or plastic surgeon? and how much were they per subcision?

Also what anaesthetic can you choose from? I mean was there the option to be put asleep under general anaesthetic during the procedure or is it just he local?

Does it hurt a lot during the procedure and lastly did you use the suction method after your subcisions?

@Quirky Fox

Yeh I don't think I will be doing any self procedures as I want to repair my skin and not damage it. I will re-look at derma-rolling but the main reason I want the subcision is just to release that tethering, as it is in my opinion the main factor behind the contours in my skin. I want to follow a subcision with dermarolling to further heal my skin as I dont think lasers are effective and other treatments may be more extreme or not effective

I wish you all the best and I hope you find a doctor in your area who is professional and highly skilled. Keep us posted of your progress!

Each subcision cost me $1200. I had very severe scarring. My face was 200% worse that yours is. From experience, derma rollers only help on top of the surface. subscision attacks deep down. This procedure does damage unscarred tissue but this is minimal. i got a 95% improvement with my 5th subscisions. I had subscusion almost a year ago and only now I can honestly see the results.
