My son is 15 and he has been battling acne for years. He was starting to get clear and BAM, he gets Chicken Pox. I can't find much on the web about how to treat the hundreds of scabs that have formed so they don't end up scarring. If anyone has experience with this, I would really appreciate some recommendations for topical applications. I just dread having him deal with Pox scars and Acne...ugh.

First and foremost, make sure he doesn't scratch them. That's the most likely way to get scars from chicken pox.

Yes, don't scratch/pick! Rule number #1.

Pawpaw ointment is a life saver for me! It's natural and has brilliant soothing/healing/antiseptic qualities and it won't clog his pores and make his acne worse. Just apply it to his individual spots but don't overdo it. :) Pawpaw ointment is really popular here, and for good reason.

Whatever you choose I hope you find something that works. xx

How unfortunate. :/ I can't remember exactly how I got my chickenpox scars, but just based on my experiences with scabs, I would try to ensure that they stay on for as long as possible. Try to have your son sleep on his back (so his face isn't touching the pillow) and wear mittens during the night, and be very careful with his face in general. And if there are any lotions for chicken pox that would help with the itching, that might be helpful.

Thanks for all your suggestions! He is FINALLY past the itchy phase (it was hell until a doctor prescribed him a relaxant and he slept through the itchiness) and approximately one hundred of scabs are forming. Unfortunately some of the worst are on his face. He has been a real trooper about not scratching and he naturally sleeps on his back so that's good. I'll look into the PawPaw ointment - thank you. I think he will need a sunscreen to keep the sun from causing hyperpigmentation when he goes back to school in a while. Any suggestions? I thought Dan had one, but I must be wrong because I couldn't find it.

Sunscreen is a must! :) I use one everyday that's made by DermaQuest. It's light, non-greasy and wears really well. I have very acne prone skin and since switching to this sunscreen I am breaking out a lot less. My skin soaks it up and it doesn't leave a slimy mess. Really beautiful stuff!

In fact, all my skin care products are with DermaQuest and I love them all.

For sunblock, might I also suggest "Up the Anti" by PRESCRIBEDsolutions?

My particular like with this sunblock, other than it's non-greasy and very light, is that it also calms down inflamed (pink/red) skin, which is especially good for if recovering from a skin procedure or if you just need to calm down your skin. And it also moisturizes!
