I didn't know you couldn't wipe off spray tans. LOL. I am glad you told me as I am sure I would have taken it too far. Anyways I think I am just going to tough it out and go with a weird red face to the holiday gatherings. I'll just tell people I had an allergic reaction to some acne medication.
Instead of a spray tan, you might want to consider a bronzer or bronzing self-tanner for the face & neck. It doesn't wash off either but depending on how frequently you exfoliate your skin, it fades in 2-5 days. Bronzing lotions, gels, liquids, etc. won't give you a drastic change in color but you can build on it if you want to make it darker. It's safer than trying to spray your face. Plus, they're made for the face and usually include a moisturizer. Some are non-comedogenic. If you do got that route, keep in mind that any tanning will take time to reveal itself. You need to give it hours to fully surface, so don't over do it! Follow the directions.
You and blahblah82 are making me nervous about having treatment before the holidays. Nevertheless, I booked my procedure for Dec. 4th and made my deposit today. No turning back now! I'm tired of waiting and will just stay hidden from most people if I look like a freak on Christmas & New Years.
Oh, if you do try something, please post about it and share your experience.

Oh, good luck with the treatment! I'm well excited for you. If I'm getting laser (I would like to, but I want to give myself some time to consider before rushing into treatments), I would be getting Total FX right before Christmas as well, since it's the only time I have time off from school. I haven't really thought about being red-faced in front of family members, but I'm sure it's worth it in the end. And I could never get away with spray tans with my fair skin, heh.
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, Collegeboy! I find it fascinating how scars start to improve dramatically a couple of months after laser treatment.
I guess your face is pretty red when you go to Thanksgiving dinner and your brother asks " what happened to your face? Is it permanent?" LOL. Even my 5 year old nephew asked if I "hurt my face". That made me realize that I better find some way of at least blending in the redness. So I did what any insane person would do... I bought a bronzer gel. L'Oreal Bronzer gel to be exact. Oddly enough I did several test spots on the underside of my wrist/arms where my skin is very pale and there was literally no noticeable change in color. I even tried applying several coats. Any suggestions? Looking at my photos from the last Ultrapulse/Repair (Ultrapulse under the eyes) I had done, it appeared the redness was rather visible til about day 60. Today is only day 28 and I appear to be on par with where I was last time.
Sorry to hear what happened at Thanksgiving dinner. Kids can say the funniest things. Siblings can be blunt.
Do you normally tan with ease? I tan pretty easily but not under my arms. If I'm red, it normally turns brown pretty quickly. If you don't tan easily, bronzers and tanning lotions may not work for you. Have you tried a test spot on your face? If it really bothers you, you can always try a concealer but you'll be walking around with makeup on your face.
Are you using hydroquinone, like last time?
Oh Inspired... I didn't know you were Tokyogirl. Good luck on that treatment in 1 week! Ooooooooooo. As for the bronzing experiment... didn't work out so well. Makes my skin turn orangeish as opposed to my normal tanned skin color; the only good news is the fake-tan faded within 3 days or so. The redness from the CO2 laser and the orange-tone from the bronzer are just too far off. To answer your question about the Hydroquinone, I have been applying it religiously , while staying completely out of the sun (which is pretty easy to do since its been very rainy/cloudy the last month or so). I have also been applying Differin gel to speed up the cell turn-over rate. The treated area is getting just a hair lighter every day but still looks AWFULLY red whenever I exert any energy to the point that my face blushes. It gets especially red from bending over to tie my shoe, lifting weights, running, working ( I work in construction), blushing, getting too hot etc. I found the best thing to do to "blend" the redness is too just grow a beard. LOL. Hmmmm.... look like a bum.... or....... look like a burn victim...decisions, decisions.
Edit:
I have also been wearing a beanie when I can to hide the transition from redness to normal skin color at eyebrow level on the temples. I just take a beanie and pull the sides all the way down to my ears. That makes it look more like skin discoloration from the cool weather. Its hard to imagine that the treated areas varies in redness but it really does. I am like a living mood-ring. It also helps when I keep my temperature down. Just getting out of the shower, working outside when it is 30 degrees out and having the AC blasting really keeps my face at its minimum pinkness. I have even been going to work in a short sleeve shirt and shorts so that I stay cool all day. I go into a sauna at the gym every day since the treatment to assist in better blood-flow circulation to the skin and the extreme heat will make the treated area of my face turn DEEP , DARK red for a good 10-15 minutes after leaving; in other words, avoid the heat to disguise your red face!
I'm going through the same thing right now 2 weeks post Mixto so I feel your pain. The redness is a lot more obvious this time and while only one person at work asked if I got "too much sun" I can tell I've been getting some odd looks.
It sucks as a guy there is no easy way to conceal the redness...I wouldn't even try to pretend I can apply make-up to cover it up. I'd be called out on it in about 5 minutes.
The worst is some of my redness has faded and some is still very dark so I look very blotchy..almost like old acne redmarks.
Hey Collegeboy!
Well, I did it yesterday. I have to say, Active FX is the MOST PAINFUL thing I've ever experienced. I took percocet and xanax one hour before the procedure. I was then given a demerol shot (good stuff - had me laughing) and about 6-8 Lidocaine shots in my face & mouth. I also had two layers of numbing cream applied, one before and one after the shots. Unlike last time, Deep FX was easy to tolerate, but Active FX was EXTREMELY painful!! I couldn't help but cuss while laughing through the whole procedure. I hope most people react that way. I kept bringing my knees up to stop my body from jerking.
Hope your hyperpigmentation is improving. I'll be dealing with that next. Luckily, I can get away with caking on foundation though.

Definitely worse in person.

Thank you! The only pain I felt was the 20 minutes of them zapping me with the laser, but after that, I haven't felt any discomfort at all.
Here are photos post-op 48 hours. Face very red, very swollen, the photos don't do justice for how red my face really is. No bleeding but I do see some whiteheads forming from keeping the Aquaphor on my face 24-7. I have to do vinegar soaks every 2 hours (including the middle of the night) so that is by far the worse part about the last few days. Aside from that, just sitting at home watching movies. Please keep us updates on how your scars improved. Good for you for doing something to improve yourself.

Hey Tokyogirl I am glad things went well for you! I would have paid to see you reaction to the ActiveFX laser as it seems you had one hell of a ride. LOL. My hyperpigmentation barely seemed to change at all the first 4 weeks as it was VERY red. By the middle of week 5 my face started to significantly lighten, although it is still pretty pink. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you have great results. I have been contemplating on whether I should stick with my same doctor for another repair (at a higher coverage than the first one) or switch to another doctor that is about 75 miles from here who offers DeepFX. If the DeepFX is that much better I may opt for it, depending on the price, but I know I can get a repair for 1200 by a doctor who knows my skin very well by this point. Decisions, Decisions. I will never have another 100% Ablative CO2 again as the recovery time was terrible... though I did notice an improvement for sure. Good luck on your treatment and keep me posted!
Hiyou will choose another repair?!So the results and improvements of repair and Ablative CO2 are not satisfied?did the lasers cause bad texture to the skin?
No the lasers did not cause bad texture to the skin; in fact, it got much better. Am I satisfied with the treatment? Sure. I am satisfied with my skin? No. Yes I will have another treatment done to take care of my remaining scars. I will avoid having another 100% Ablative CO2 is the down-time and recovery was very lengthy. Nearly 6 weeks since my treatment and my face is still pink, especially when I blush. This pinkness is a lot more apparent compared to fractional CO2 lasers.
Hey collegeboy! I've kind of been lurking on here, and i'm dying to know how your recovery is going, so i decided to make a profile. Just so I could say, I'm dying of suspense over here! My scars are SO much like yours, mainly just textural issues with enlarged/scarred pores, but enough to bug me. So i was wondering how much improvment you saw on your pores from your first fractionated co2 laser alone, and if any scarred pores went back to regular size, and then how much improvement you've seen from the fully ablative procedure on your pores in particular. You're just so positive and i look forward to hearing about your improvment! Thanks (:

Sorry man. Been real busy. Honestly? Stick with the Repair or DeepFX. The ultrapulse (100% ablation) is too agressive and the results were not as good as the repair was. I will do another repair in a few months (after spring semester). There is definitely an improvement with the Fraxel: Repair when it comes to textural and pores.
Good luck!
PS quote my message if you want a quick reply otherwise I dont know that you asking me a question since I rarely long on the boards these days.

Glad to hear that you're still around. I was a bit worried that your last fully ablative treatment finished you off. How's the hyperpigmentation, colour issues? Did you experience any hypopigmentation issues at all? I hope the last treatment eliminated some scars, as it sounded really aggressive. Looking forward to see new pics of your progress.
Hey Alex and everyone else I apologize if I haven't been as complete with my CO2 experience as some of the other poster's on this board. I have been SO busy these last few months with finals, holidays, work, buying a new truck and now spring semester starting up. And to be quite honest, I didn't want to come on here and post as thinking about the hyper-pigmentation was depressing enough to deal with.
Yes, the hyper-pigmentation was bad from the Ultrapulse laser. This aggressive old school CO2 laser had hyper-pigmentation that was much harsher, prolonged and noticeable then any fractional laser would. Honestly I should have known this as I had the treatment done once under the eyes. I guess I had really high expectations which is why I decided to go with the treatment. And although my scars had shrinkage to some extent I would say that the Fraxel: Repair was just as effective if not better. It is really hard to say as the changes are so slow you begin to forget what you started off with. I have tried to compare with old photos but its just too difficult to see.
As for the HYPO-pigmentation, nothing that I can see (THANKFULLY). The areas where the doctor went easy and the HYPER-pigmentation is already 100% gone does look pale but its just "fresh" skin.
HYPER-pigmentation was a whole different story. Truthfully, it was bad the first month. I mean, REAL bad. It was so obvious because I only had the half cheeks done. It wouldn't be as bad if they did down to the jawline. I don't really care for the temples as I can just wear a hat ( I do anyways at work). By the middle of the second month (45 days out) it started to fade rather quick, but still pretty obvious.
Today, is day 90 and it is STILL there. However, its very random in the sense that it looks nearly gone some days, and pretty obvious on others. I figured out that every time I am out in the cold weather for longer periods of time it really begins to irritate the skin and make the treated area bright pink for about 24 hours. Its like extremely chapped lips on a cold winter day - takes time to recover. I would imagine that having hyper-pigmentation 90 days out means there still must be some collagen improvement going on but truthfully its hard to even notice at this point.
Long story short, don't do the 100% ablative CO2. The recovery time is terrible and the results from the repair may be better. Come to think of it, I had as good results from the Fraxel: Repair AND my doctor went very conservative on the settings. I bet if my doctor went with higher coverage % with the Repair it would have blown the CO2 results out of the water.
And one may think that if they went more aggressive one the Repair then I would have suffered pigmentation like the CO2, but I am not so sure. See, after having the old school CO2 treatment done, the skin peeled, but you could see the skin had a tough time healing. There was no "bridges" connection good tissue from bad. So it healed REALLY slow, like a scraping your knee on concrete would. When I had the repair it literally healed by day 3. I'd also argue that the hyper-pigmentation was different. It was more of a dark fleshy-colored pinkish from the Repair where as the Ultrapulse hyper-pigmentation was a very bright pink.
I plan on having another Repair done , at a much higher setting, in May when class ends. I will opt for the entire cheek-temple area to make any remnants of Hyper-pigmentation less obvious.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for replying! That info was super helpful, although i'm sorry you've had such a rough time with the hyperpigmentation. I'm sure it'll all be worth it (: I can't wait to see how your next repair goes and i hope you keep us updated!
Hey all... sorry if I have disappeared off the face of the earth. I just wanted to come on to give a little more feedback now that is has been.... (doing some math ..) ... 4 months and 1 week. I was so disappointed by the redness that I started to "not care" or really even examine my skin as I did in the past. I tried to be less compulsive with looking at my skin in all different types of reflections as it can make a person go insane! I also purchased a big new truck which has a rear-view mirror much further from my face than my previous tiny truck. This made it easier to not look at my reflection every time I was driving. LOL... that felt weird typing.
Anyways... long story short, after catching my reflection in the "bad lighting" on a few occasions in the past 2-3 weeks I was actually a bit amazed to see that my scars have improved. I guess looking at your skin on a daily basis not only makes it difficult to see any day-to-day improvement but it also makes you dwell over the smallest of flaws. I guess what I am saying is, the ultrapulse CO2 laser did have some decent results. Its still not a one-and-done miracle procedure but I suppose it is on par with the Fraxel: Repair that I had previously.
Though, my face is STILL red.... well, pink. Its nothing obvious or atrocious like it was previously but still a bit annoying seeing as how its month 4. Hopefully this means that there is still some collagen improvements to come.
With all that being said, I will NEVER have another Ultrapulse CO2 100% ablative laser done again as the downtime and redness is about a 30x worse than the fractionated "deeper" laser treatments such as the Repair or DeepFX. I plan on having ANOTHER repair May 25th after my last final exam for school.
Keep you all posted!
Oh... I can't remember if I posted this previously but heres a tip for those who are planning a future treatment-
I realized the redness would get much MUCH worse after being outside on cold windy days. This holds true even MONTHS after having the laser treatment. I learned that my skin would withstand the harsher elements better if I didn't wash my face with a mild foaming soap like Cetaphil or CereVe. On days where I knew I would be outside (I do often, as I work in construction) I would wash my face with just water. This helped my redness out a lot.

Hi CollegeBoy,
That sounds good. I'm glad that your scars have improved. I hope you're able to shed light on a few things.
Would you be able to post some pictures so that we could see the difference?
I remember from your previous posts that some of your boxscars changed shape and turned into a 'boomerang' shape. Did it finally resolve itself?
What about your other boxscars? Did they improve or change shape as well?
And interestingly, how about your icepick scars? I'd really like to know whether your treatments had have had any impact on those?
Finally, (this may sound quite naive) did 'ANY' of your scars, even the tiniest ones, disappear or were eliminated?
Thanks, and keep us posted. You have no idea how inspiring your thread is.
P.S. I'm due for a Total FX next week Tuesday, and tips for a first timer?

Yes I will post some photos. But a few months ago I tried to compare photos and it was difficult to see improvement due to different lighting, camera angles, terrible quality cell phone pictures and just the fact that my scars were small to begin with.
In regards to that boxcar scar that changed shape into a boomerang as I called it, that scar is gone, 100%. Let me re-explain that scar in case I may have confused some people. That was a rather wide boxcar scar (though wasn't THAT deep), and pretty noticeable as it was closer to the fore-front of my face ( about an inch or so from my nose). I actually tried pulling up the original photos I posted to see that scar and surprisingly you really can't see it. I say surprisingly because it was one of my most hated scars.
Anyways, the first Fraxel:Repair I had was what really made it change shape. Actually, the major improvement in that scar is what gave me the proof I personally needed to have confidence in going forward with future treatments. What was once a squarish boxcar scar was literally changing shapes because one half of the scar was "filling up" or "raising" at a faster rate than the other side of the scar. This all starting happening about 20+ days out if I remember correctly. This post-laser improvement also showed evidence that this was an actual improvement and not swelling from the initial treatment. Anyways, 6 months later... before having the Ultrapulse CO2 done, That scar was about 95% improved. AFTER having the Ultrapulse CO2, I no longer see that scar at all.
This was enough evidence for myself that my scars to have positive reactions to the lasers. Why other scars did not improve as dramatically as that specific scar I will never know. I personally believe that that area was hit more aggressive as it was a "starting point" from where the doctor rolled the fraxel repair hand piece outward in all directions. The face got pretty bloody so I can see how a doctor may have overlapped on that spot a few times.
Another reason that I felt I have had some pretty big improvements (as Its hard to remember what my skin looked like a year ago after seeing it every day) is that you just asked how my ice pick scars are. I totally forgot I even had ice-pick scars. The scars that remain I wouldnt even classify as ice-pick scars. If anything, they are more like big pores now... and even that may be an overstatement considering I am adult man with oily skin and raging hormones. I would not expect a person such as myself to have poreless, smooth skin like a woman may have.
The scars that bother me at this point are boxcar scars. My biggest one, the one you can see in the original photo still remains, though I believe is much smaller than it used to be. Again, I tried to compare photos a few months ago but its hard to see the improvement as my original photos don't really show the depth of the scar. And I have a few other boxcar scars that seem pretty shallow at this point. I am hoping that another fraxel repair, more aggressive than the first will really help fill in whats left.
Post photos soon.
Oh and Alex, I am really glad to hear you are finally having the laser done. If I could give any advice I would say... urge the doctor to go aggressive on the coverage % of the DeepFX ( I believe a conservative depth is fine for your scars as they looked fairly shallow). I think most of your improvements will come from the DeepFX as the ActiveFX is a VERY VERY shallow treatment.
I feel that with fractionated lasers, its best to go aggressive, with more down-time and less treatments than to go with 4-5 mild/conservative laser treatments that you must wait 6 whole months in between. I think aggressiveness with fractionated lasers are ok... as I healed incredibly quick. But you already know my opinion on non-fractionated, flat-beam , CO2 lasers. LOL.
Good luck bud! Keep me posted.
Any guesstimate of improvement after your two lasers collegeboy?
From the Repair and the Ultrapulse... I'd say.... it varies scar to scar. Some disappeared, some seemed to have barely changed. If I had to throw out a number I'd say 35%? I dont know... its hard to remember what my scars looked like a year ago. I am also very critical of my own skin so I am pretty good at making a mountain out of a mole hill. All I Know is that I have improvement. Even the smallest of improvement tells me that my skin issues are fixable in time.
Oh Collegeboy, I completely forgot about something. I understand that the photos you've taken so far have come from your smartphone. I was wondering if your doctor took some pictures him/herself from before you had your first repair, so as to compare the improvements you've so far had from your Repair and MaxFX treatments.
