The NON-COMEDOGENIC QUEST!

First of all, here are a few lists of comedogenic ingredients (or ratings of its comedogenicity) to check out: (btw, these high comedogenic ingredients are ALL OVER the acne products labled as Non-Comedogenic. This buzz word seems to be a free-for-all, since there is really not an objective and authoritative regulating agency to certify it. So companies are free to label their product "non-comedogenic" if they want.... SAD!) Check out the lists below and check your product label, your will find many moderate - high comedogenicity ingredients in almost 90% of products.

http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acnedetect.htm

http://www.beautymagonline.com/pages/comed...f_cosmetic_.htm

http://www.betterhealthyskin.com/lets-talk...-jr-md-phd.aspx

http://www.dermadoctor.com/pages/newsletter158.asp

http://www.geocities.com/mcsworld2000/comedogenic.htm

**************************************************************************

I am having a very HARD TIME finding strictly non-comedogenic lotion/cream/serum that doesn't contain at least one or more unsafeingredients, especially the following highly comedogenic ones:

Algae extract (does that mean any chemical to do with algae, kelp, seaweed etc? Anyone has a checmical background here? )

Cetearyl Alcohol

Ceteareth 20

C12-C15 Alcohols Benzonate

Isopropyl Palmitate

Glyceryl Stearate SE

Laureth 4 and 23

Octyl Palmitate

Sodium Chloride

Many Oils/Emollients (natural and synthetic), including coconut and sweet almond.

and there are of course many more, but these i find these most difficult to avoid in any formulations.

I have been checking many many many product without any luck! They either contain

*one or more of comedogenic ingredients (which is the majority), or

*they use oils/ingredients that there is no comedogenic test data available, such as many

organic skincare products, for example, how comedogenic is meadowfoam seed oil or other exotic plant oil? So these type of products' comedogenicity remain unknown.

(BTW, the interesting thing about oil/emollient is that saturated oil, for example, animal oil like lard, is generally way less comedogenic than many unsaturated (plant) oil, such as coconut, sweet almond etc.

Another scary example, many oil-free moisturizer use seaweed extract in place of oil. there is a popular product on other skincare forums, called Sea Kelp Bioferment, supposed to be good for scars.

But, the question: is Sea Kelp BioFerment a derivitive of Algae extract? Algae extract is extremely Comedogenic!!

Anyone has used this stuff?

The difficulty of finding a good moisturizer lead me to want to try to make my own formulation, by adding the active ingredients into a base lotion myself. But so far I could not even find a base cream, base lotion, or base serum (to formulate with) that does not contain at least one or more of these ingredients on the above lists !!! HELP!

If anyone can recommend a base that contains ONLY STRICTLY non-comedogenic ingredients (0-1/5, or 0-1/3 not more), please suggest and share!

Thank you.

Yeah, lotion is a pain. I use Cetaphil, but it makes me really shiny and greasy throughout the course of the day, even when patting my face down with a tissue or wiping the shine off with a paper towel. But it never causes me to breakout.

But if I don't use lotion, my face gets so painfully dry after washing that I have difficulty opening my mouth. So frustrating. I'm thinking about trying to get a bottle of glycerin, mixing it with some water and applying that to my face.

CeraVe is the best thing I've ever used on my face. I'm clear.

I use highly refined emu oil. It does a very nice job of moisutrizing.

 The alcohol is on the list...

Dee, CeraVe sounds good, however, I live in Canada, and it does not look like it is available in Canada, I may have to see if i can buy it on the internet. Also i could not find ingredients list on their website. Do you use the lotion or the cream? What are the ingredients? what kind of skin do you have and do you find the lotion or cream easily obsorbable and not oily? how is it for sensitive skin (under retinoid treatment).

So i assume the alcohols in CeraVe are not breakng you out, how long have you been using it? do you use it everyday? do you have blackheads? improved or the same since using CeraVe?

did you do a TCA cross peel for scars? or just the regular TCA peel for redmarks? Downtime? Peeling? good luck with your recovery!

i need to do a TCA at some point, too. But still dealing with active acne now. I think the differin and AHA, BHA, Baking soda, ACV may been too intense for for me for the last month or so, now My skin is so tight and dry (peeling)! Thus need a supper moisturizer, but can't find a comedogenic-free one!

I have very sensitive skin... so I wonder if TCA is OK for me.

What is SLS?

Yes, Dee. It's evident now that i have overexfoliated my skin... I am definitely slowing it down to let my skin heal. But it's strange I was using acid/differin for a whole month ( occational ACV and Baking soda) and did not have a problem (except some dryness caused by differin). Then one day i wake up, the skin around my eyes are supper dry and a bit peeling, then the next day, my lower chin /cheek area on the right ( where i applied most Differin my daily basis, because it's my problem area) starts to itch and became very irritated... my whole face was also becoming more irritated..

I wonder if the differin by thinning the skin makes the skin more sensitive + it's pollen season (hay fever season) and my differin affected skin area is reacting to something..

i will post it in Differin thread to see if anyone else experience this.

Back to the non-comedogenicity, one question for all the noncomedogenic gurus:

many sources report Cetearyl Alcohol + Ceteareth 20 as highly Comedogenic.

Does anyone know then if Ceteareth without Cetearyl Alcohol or Vice Versa in a product is also Comedogenic?

2012 -

I just came upon your post while I was checking comedogenic ingredients. Did you also post on skinActives? I read a somewhat similar post there too - but the thread had been locked so no further posts could be left.

Anyway, I don't know for sure, but I would think Sea Kelp Bio-Ferment would be considered an algae and therefore possibly comedogenic. I've read some other information on comedogenic ingredients and one website said that, even if it is comedogenic, it doesn't necessarily mean it will clog your pores, as everyone has different skin (well, it said something to that effect) So, if you've used products with algae in the past and everything was fine, it should be fine to use the Sea Kelp. However, if algae products have bothered your skin in the past, I (personally) wouldn't use this, as their own website describes it as being an algae... "Macrocystis pyrifera is a sea macroalgae rich in caragenaan, algin, minerals and many active chemicals. Fermentation makes the cell contents of this algae readily available to your skin, moisturizing it and providing the nutrients required to synthesize new components. This is the key ingredient (the Miracle Brotha) in CrAme de la Mer, it is fermented by the same microorganisms that convert milk into yoghurt." (quoted from their website)

I hope I've helped somewhat! =)

Hello! this is my first time posting on this forum but I couldn't help but answer this thread. I know how hard it is to find non-comedogenic products, and I also strive to find products that are rated a 0 on the toxicity scale according to the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database.

I have found an amazing solution I couldn't help but share. I've had acne for 7 years, and this is the ONLY product that doesn't break me out, moistruizes, and actually WORKS without toxins and other crap in it.

It's called La-Roche de Posay's Toleriane FLUIDE moisturizer. It comes in a pump bottle and it's very important that you get this one! There are other creams by the Toleriane line. There's a RICHE formula, which is thicker, and another one that doesn't really have another name, it just says Toleriane, I used this one for years too until I found that this one has far less toxins (the other one has PEG 100 and a few other chemicals)

You can check it out here for yourself: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/product/279728/La_Roche-Posay_Toleriane_Facial_Fluide/

I can vouch for this product tenfold. Two pumps do my whole face, and it feels really cooling/soothing on. No fragrance. It absorbs fairly quickly and it doesn't leave you greasy :) It's oil free, paraben free, non-comedogenic, and excellent for intolerant skin (like mine). Perfect for acne-prone skin. Since using this my skin went from combination to normal! (minus the acne) I'm no longer oily in areas, sometimes I get a little dry from overwashing but that's about it! Most of the time it feels comfortable (again, minus the acne that is obviously painful as you know).

Anyways, hope this helps!! :)

Glad to hear it helps! I also use Thermal Spring Water, but I actually don't like the one La Roche has, I very much prefer Avene's water. It's AMAZING. Somehow, it's much more soothing than the one from LRP. Give this a try, I assure you you'll feel the difference. It's a lot lighter and it works much better. I've used both. Plus, you can get it in a really big bottle lol.

Hope this helps!

Well I'm glad u like the cream and the thermal water by LRP :) It's a personal preference that I like the Avene water better, but if you're happy with LRP don't let me change your mind. Whatever works for you :) No harm in trying both though!

Good luck!

I've suffered with horrible hormonal acne for a while--this is the only thing that doesn't cause breakouts or irritate that I've found. http://www.triderma....pair-cream.html

It's not super-moisturizing if you suffer with dry skin but for my oily/combo skin, I can wear it under make up, which is what I need.

I am looking for a stable non-comedogenic SPF (no powders unless it's insured their is no mica or bismuth oxychloride).

Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Extract, Arnica Montana (Montana Flower) Extract, Methylsulfonyl Methane (MSM), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Cyclomethicone, Alkyl Benzoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Allantoin (Comfrey Root), Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A), Glyceryl Stearate, Triethanolamine, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA
