Just updating my regimen. What I have been doing consistently and has been helping my skin a lot.
1. Vitamin D2 prescription. I'm in my 2nd month and getting my levels re-tested soon to see if I'm still deficient. Vitamin D3 supplements only worsened my acne, so prescription was my only hope. This has helped me with skin texture, looking healthier, and fighting off depression and anxiety.
2. Vitamin C. I have been taking this on and off for the past couple of years. Now I started juicing more with vegetable juices and so I'm getting more vitamin C every day. If I feel a cold coming on, I take ViraStop and it's been helping. I only take it as needed though.
3. Reducing grains from my diet. This has helped a lot with inflammation.
4. Getting regular facials, including high frequency, gentle aloe vera peels, extractions (finally found an esthetician who can do them right), and blue/red light treatments. I've been getting a facial every 2 weeks, and so far I got 3 and my acne is no longer infected and heals faster. I also noticed an increase in collagen, which the red light stimulates. I'm lucky I found a spa that has affordable deals on these treatments otherwise I'd be broke by now.
5. It's my 3rd week on myo-inositol powder and so far I'm very pleased. Facial fuzz has been steadily decreasing and so has oil production (although that could also be the D finally kicking in). I get less numbness at night and sleep better. My skin feels smoother, but it's too early to tell if it will help me manage my PCOS. All the studies and user reviews I read seem very promising.
6. Stressing less and trying to take a day off each week to just relax and watch movies.
I need to get back into a regular exercise routine. I need to quit the nasty smoking habit I picked up again after 2 years of quitting. I need to get my social life back. Once I achieve these goals I'll feel like my old self again (well, my old self with new scars that is :/ )
Here's a photo of my face today....I still look like I got punched in the face, multiple times :/
I'm also PMSing and have been eating like a pig....I had frozen yogurt 2 days in a row, and surprise surprise, I got some whiteheads on my chin, which was clear for 2 months, plus a zit under my eye. Ugh. Good motivation to avoid dairy completely.
I found my old log! Time to update.
Current regimen:
- Myo inositol & d-chiro-inositol every day on an empty stomach... 1x600mg capsule of chiro & approx. 500-850mg of myo divided into 2-3 doses per day.
- Herpanacine vitamins
- Digestive enzymes
- vitamin C 3x500mg three times a day
- Low histamine diet
- Kojic acid serum & aloe vera on melasma
- Red & blue light treatments, Clear Touch Light treatments, gentle peels (aloe & pumpkin), professional extractions
- Avoiding high stress situations as best as I can
- Trying to get over the social anxiety my acne has caused me this past year
- Trying to figure out what to do about red marks and scarring without causing acne from those treatments
- Must exercise more, I have been slacking off lately because there's no cable TV at the gym so I'm not motivated to stay there that long.
My face currently...I tried to also get all my red marks and scars in the photos. Sometimes they show and sometimes they don't in pictures, depending on the lighting. Excuse the messy appearance. They were taken after I took my makeup off with my the new ponds wipes with kaolin clay...I am really liking those!
Wishclean, your skin looks so great! Just stumbled on your thread here. So glad low histamine is working for you! I might do this as well when I come off BCP. This won't be something I could do long term I think. It would be hard...
Do you think it would be a good idea to track down any food allergies by blood testing? Seppo from aceneeinstom.com said that you would not necesarily need to eat super healthy all the time, but it's more important to find your own specific triggers. Of course, doing a binge eat on mcD is def. not the way to go!
Oh well, I just googled low histamine diet and this was what it gave me. You can actually eat a lot, is that right?!?!
http://mastcellblog.wordpress.com/histamine-diet/
I think it's maybe best for me to find the foods that I'm sensitive to, because they trigger histamine. I see you made a significant difference in cutting out your forbidden foods!
Well, I should get some sleep.... x

thanks! I still have scarring and redness, which those pictures don't show (my camera is cheap lol). There is some conflicting information about which foods/ products are low histamine. Generally, try to stay away from anything red (tomatoes, strawberries, etc), as well as sulfates (including cosmetics/ makeup./ cleansers/ shampoos etc).
Once you find your biggest triggers, it gets easier to learn what to avoid. Histamine-releasers come from various sources, though, not just foods...for me, the worst irritant is cleansers & shampoos & toothpastes with SLS.

I'm posting a link to my album with chronologically organized photos so you can see how severe my acne was. The photo from June is in between phases, where my skin cleared up dramatically on a very strict low histamine lifestyle. Unfortunately, in July I moved to a new place which was sprayed with pesticide inside and I also accidentally used a shampoo with SLS...all this plus stress raised my histamines a lot (I get red spots on my arms and legs too, plus itchy scalp, that's how I can tell my histamines get high). So the low histamine approach works well for hormonal acne, but it's really hard to sustain that's why I added other supplements and tried to decrease stress to help me eat a bit more
If you read through this log, you'll see that I also get monthly red light treatments and high frequency facials (with peels & extractions) to help with inflammation and scarring. My esthetician is awesome and doesn't use harsh chemicals on my face, just gentle peels with natural ingredients (well, almost natural...sometimes she uses things with a bit of retinol, which I don't like).
Your skin looks really nice! Really! I understand it can be hard to find those triggers. I personally don't have any itching or red bumps on the rest of my body (yeah, body acne...).
I found an institute here in the Netherlands that can test for many many food allergies or sensitivities (on all popular foods) and also for the products you mentioned. I think it would be very helpful if I took those tests, that will show where I'm sensitive for. I think it's more about avoiding your personal triggers, rather than avoiding anything. At least, I think that's the way I will do it do keep on doing it. There's no way I could otherwise stick to it.
I think in may/june I will pump up the lifestyle even more. I will swtich my whole grain bread to whole grain spelt (organic) and for breakfast some eggs. At night just quinoa or brown rice. I already eat about 300/400 g of vedgetables.
I started eating garlic since yesterday, because I read somewhere it was just as strong as an antibiotic, but I read controversal stories so we will see how that goes!
Weirdly, the acne seems to be a bit worse than last year around this time, while I'm eating healthier, less stress and taking more care of myself. Hmm..

started eating garlic 3-4 years ago almost daily, and many periods (many weeks) almost every meal (circumstances), and i can tell you garlic means almost nothing to acne.
also if ur looking for a natural antibiotic, since this is how i started my diet-treatment, you can forget propolis also. i took raw propolis daily (rather nightly) with no exception (3-4y ago). there's no replacement for antibiotics. (but i still don't recommend them since bp is invented, like "brevoxyl", etc)
and eating healthy.. our medicine understanding is very limited, so doctors have no clue what healthy diet is imo. i guess i'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea, an as healthy diet as i possibly could, didn't do much to my acne. it can slow the rate of cysts but nothing for whiteheads.
there should be a topic for each of these elements, so we can benefit from a real forum.
I get your point, but I just don't want to believe that this is me being doomed with acne, until menopause. I just don't. I really don't believe that diet is going to be my holy grail, because - as I said - I already eat pretty healthy. A lot healthier than most other people, and it did not make much of a difference - if any, at all. But I'm on a pretty light version of birth control, a pill that could help with acne, but could also do nothing at all. I have mild acne right now, so I'm really hoping it stays this way after I quit BCP. I have to come off some day... I think I'll be able to keep it in check if my balance stay balanced. What do you do to keep your skin clear?

if you checked acne sites and forums, there are women past 60y with acne, the only thing that keeps it in check for them is antibiotics.
i hope you didn't try bp yet, because this could be your answer. it seems to be mine. using brevoxyl almost completely blocked my whiteheads with no redness, no burn, no flacky - dryness (but i use a moisturiser), and it's only been 4 days of use. price: 4euro, lasts for 1/2months i think. i'm getting a spf cream and that's it.
the back acne.. i'm still trying all sorts of nonsense.. i'm taking vit A, and B complex. again lol. give the carbs-few-as-possible another week/weeks to see if they have any impact, but.. there are guys here a bit older than me who tryied all of this and ..no
ultimately i put my trust in medicine and real scientists, and check from time to time.

Back acne could be a reaction to clothing or laundry detergents. If it looks the same as the type of acne on your face, then it's not a reaction probably. But if it looks like a rash/ inflammed, then it's worth looking into fabrics and./or detergents/shower wash & potential reactions.

ha, back acne is acne, there is a difference in that it's mostly reddish pimples or more cysts and a bit less whiteheads(as opossed to my face, which is the other way around), but the difference is only in percentages and rates. i only wash with sulfur soap, so no shampoo or anything and i knew about fabric softeners/perfumes etc a long time ago.
my back acne really devoloped to it's fullest during my 16-17y when i was a little *loco* on lifting weights at the gym. this is the only thing that i liked about alternativista's latest vit. B2(+vit A) theory link. that hormones need those vitamins as a teenager and the physical effort further needs these.
but logic ends here.
male hormones testing and cataloguing that i googled this evening make me lose any respect for these so called "specialists"
I have used benzoyl peroxide from when I was 12. I stopped it many many years ago, so I already decided that I wanna go on the regimen, just to see how that works. I know for sure my acne is hormonal, so maybe diet would play a bigger role for me than for you. For example, I shouldn't try binge eating on chocolat. This will kill my face instantly. I have back acne too and I would say it's quit the same as on my face. However, it's more bumpy than whitehead-ish, which characterizes my face mostly. My skin - especially back - respons really well to sunlight. In the summer when I'm on holiday there is no back acne, but the face there's always some.
So that weight lifting - increase of testosterone - caused you to break out more, and you never balanced it out. Why wouldn't hormone testing me something for you? I know I will do this do see what's off balance.
I get your frustration here. I def. don't think diet is going to be my salvation for my acne probs, but it will help me beat it. I don't know what I will do to keep my acne in check, but I guess it will me a combo of eating healthy, stress management (big time!!!) and the right supplements.
Keeping my acne mild would be a blessing. Don't really need to have the perfect skin... there's plenty of things that are good about me and it's not my skin... shit happens. As long as I don't look as someone who is virally ill, I'm good.

You should look up sulfur/ sulfa allergies...maybe the soap is doing you more harm than good if you still have bacne.

i'd be careful with the sun, or anything that dries your skin (like salty waters), doctors say any drying comes with the revenge of oily>acne. but yes the sun clears a lot of my acne too, especially on my back. but i think doctors may have a point here.
seems i'm killing acne solutions by the post, lol i'd better shut up.
ha, back acne is acne, there is a difference in that it's mostly reddish pimples or more cysts and a bit less whiteheads(as opossed to my face, which is the other way around), but the difference is only in percentages and rates. i only wash with sulfur soap, so no shampoo or anything and i knew about fabric softeners/perfumes etc a long time ago.
my back acne really devoloped to it's fullest during my 16-17y when i was a little *loco* on lifting weights at the gym. this is the only thing that i liked about alternativista's latest vit. B2(+vit A) theory link. that hormones need those vitamins as a teenager and the physical effort further needs these.
but logic ends here.
male hormones testing and cataloguing that i googled this evening make me lose any respect for these so called "specialists"
You should look up sulfur/ sulfa allergies...maybe the soap is doing you more harm than good if you still have bacne.
i discovered it 3-4 years ago (at age ~26), it does only good things, but only after i realised that it must stay almost a minute on the skin to do it's job.
Hey WishClean! You look really hot even without makeup! I would date you for sure. Can you tell me more about that low histamine diet? Does it mean just certain carbs, or can high histamine foods be proteins and fats too? What carb sources can you eat? I get only really inflamed acne on the sides of my mouth and inner cheeks, those are my problem areas and I don't get cysts ever.
Aah, I just read about that histamine thing and it seems that I haven't even eaten anything histamine raising foods.. Damn, it seemed so promising! Three years ago I suddenly developed terrible birch and timothy allergy and my nose is always stuffy and runny when I go outside all year round. So depressing, what is wrong with me..

lol thanks for the compliment even though I post my worst photos on here, usually after working out and looking more horrible.
I wrote a list of low histamine foods somewhere...it should be on this log. Even if you don't have a histamine issue, a low histamine diet is anti-inflammatory. Basically consists of sweet potatoes, lots of vegetables, fiber and green juices. I have now added low carb/yeast-free pitas, tofu cheese, fiber bars, and some other things.
What are your symptoms?
Update: Started DIM around January 18/20th. I want to keep track of this and see if it will work for me along with inositol.
Unfortunately, vitex seems too strong for my sensitive stomach now so I gave up for now. Might try it again later since it helped me a lot the last 2 times I took it. I recommend it to anyone who gets rebound acne after coming off birth control.
Last month's breakout started on January 13/14th...I'm suspecting it was vitex or a new foundation with sulfites. I will be keeping track for this month to see if anything happens around mid-Feb, otherwise it means it was vitex or the shiseido foundation.
Still going strong with inositol....won't give that up for sure

Well my symptoms have gone worse and worse over the years, it's like I'm slowly dying. I have had for years now stuffy nose, slime in my throat and my mouth and these symptoms are all year round, every day. Three years ago I suddenly got terrible birch and timothy allergy, my head hurts, I have acne of course, dark circles under eyes and about year ago I suddenly got cervical dystonia so now whatever is wrong with me is starting to affect my brain function too. I have a strong feeling that it is because I eat something that my body can't handle. Maybe it's that whey protein, I started to eat whey protein about seven years ago and the last five years I have eaten whey in every meal and 6-7 times a day! I ordered pea, rice, soy and egg white protein powders to replace whey completely and I will get those on wednesday! I will do that MRT food sensitivity test as soon as possible so I know for sure what foods are causing me problems. I just hope that the diet change will cure me of these symptoms because I'm really tired of this life and I can't take this anymore.

Sounds like allergies, not sure if it's high histamines as well. I would stay away from protein supplements and just get protein from foods like egg whites and meat. Digestive enzymes can also be helpful until you figure out your triggers. Right now, it seems like protein/whey might be your main issue.
Ok quick update. I got accidental microderm on my face last week and although I hate to admit it, my skin does look better now. But I was freaked out about all the scratches on my face and now they are gone. I still have red marks and scars though...I wish I could get another pumpkin lactic acid peel, it really does the trick.
Some pics without makeup and with tinted CC cream. Obviously the worst one is the no makeup one.
Update: Red marks remain, but they faded a bit since last time I posted. I need to take a decent photo soon to show the progress. Unfortunately, my scarring bothers me sometimes, but whatever...
Same diet, same supplements, trying to get some sun every day, trying to do yoga and acupuncture on a regular basis.
Photo updates! Skin is not that great, but considering the amount of stress & moving I have been under, it's holding up fine.
What I have been doing, besides the usual stuff listed in my signature below:
- I tried a "crystal clear" facial (with crystal-tipped microderm-style wand) with some herbal masks & treatments and an oxygenating treatment as well ---> This definitely brought some zits to the surface and left my face red...still unsure whether it was worth it. I'm getting another one next week, since it's supposed to be a regular treatment for a few weeks until everything is cleared.
- I added a matte moisturizer to wear under makeup (by Rejuve - anyone heard of this company?? I haven't before)
- I started using Nyx foundation (powder & liquid)...pretty sure my skin isn't that happy with it. Looking to try something new that is paraben-free, any suggestions?
- I added Evening Primrose Oil, as recommended by my acupuncturist. I had some good results the first 2 times I took it. It's supposed to be a DHT blocker, and can help with PCOS, hirsutism, and hair loss. I'm also hoping it helps fade the hyperpigmentation patches under my eyes. We shall see...
Here are some make-up free photos, just in time for halloween
Hi WishClean,
I have read a lot of your posts and you seem really knowledgeable about this stuff. I took Indole-3-Carbinol, as perscripned by a doctor, for 3 months and it was great, I hardly had any spots and they were usually just small ones around that time of the month. I have been off them for about a month because I haven't been able to get the same brand, and in the past week or so I have been getting some spots so I really want to get back on some supplements.
I am really interested in Inositol. I don't know what imbalances I have so I was wondering if I can still take Inositol, I seem to remember you saying in one post that its like a multitasker. Does it lower testosterone? I always thought that was my problem hormone.
I see that you combine DIM and Inositol, and I was thinking I might combine I3C and Inositol, or maybe I can try DIM myself.
Or do you think I should stick with the I3C (even though it will be a different brand) because it seemed to work well for me before?
Thanks for your advice

Well, there's no sure way to tell what your issues are...you can start with just 1 of these supplements, preferably inositol because it's the mildest, and see if you need to add anything else after the 1st month. You have to give it at least a month. You can read my thread here:
Photo update....
Current regimen: Just taking SOD (super oxide dismutase) for histamines and some vitamin C. Sometimes also herpanacine multis.
Facials: Getting regular diamond-tip microderm facials, and they make my skin smoother. These are European-style facials, so the microderm with crystals is not as harsh as the ones they do in the US. It sure is expensive, though, so I'm planning on cutting back.
Here are 2 photos, one with makeup the other without. My melasma/ dark spots under my eye area are still there :/
