So, I have a combination of factors associated with my skin and I have come a ways to get to this mehtod that I would like to start/share.
Background:
1. I had acne when I was younger, went on birthcontrol at 16 and it cleared up. Went off of birthcontrol at 23 and my skin freaked out.
2. I tried topicals, the whole deal which were no help until using antibiotics only after suffering for about 2 years with severe acne.
3. I went off the antibiotics after 9 months with clear skin in 2-3 months it had returned as before, so now I am taking 1/2 the dose of antibiotcs and have done so for about 2 years now and it has only moderately controlled my acne.
I have had a lot of digestive issues with the antibiotics and want to quit them again. I have had some hope after reading about weaning off of them very slowly. I have started to cut them ( I take 1/day) to 3/4 and will do so for 2 months, then another quarter next 2 months and so on. I have been taking probiotics which have helped some and I will boost those as times go on. I have a pretty good diet. I am gluten free and try to eat less dairy and sugar but end up eating those once a week. My plan is to go more paleo as I decrease the antibiotics.
Skincare (current):
I have been interested in doing paleo skin care since I began washing my hair less to control oils. I wash it once a week now, and use a natural conditioner twice a week to rinse. It has been good. I have since started washing my face only at night (once a day) and it has really helped with oiliness, reduced pore size, and hasn't increased breakouts. I exfoliate 2x a week with an exfoliating mit that I wash and reuse.
Skincare (proposed):
I have heard about great results with paleo/caveman not washing your face at all. I am thinking I can slowly get there, or atleast start with a modified version. My thought is that I will start washing my face every other day for a while (2 weeks maybe) then maybe every 3 days. Then from there switch to washing with sea salt water instead of my face wash (already good natural soap). I know that caveman gets really flaky so I thought maybe the saltwater could also act as a light exfoliant, use more as a paste once a week.
I haven't started this yet and I want to do it gradually. The antibiotics I am triying to mitigate on their own with diet and slow weaning process. Has anyone thought to do this (salt water/modified caveman skin care) before, and to what results. I will post back once I see improvement/progress. Thanks!!
So, it has been about three weeks and I think it has been a positive experience so far. My pores and smaller so when I break out it is smaller, no real pimples. I have tapered down on the antibiotics from 3/4 pill/day to 1/2 and my digestion is getting a little better.
I think my skin went through some of the paleo stuff were it had to break out to heal and has smoothed out. I haven't been exfoliating at all, so maybe some of these changes are just related to that, but I did accidently wash my face (force of habit) about a week ago and my skin reacted by breaking out some.
I am going to keep it up for atleast 3 months to see how it goes. I am going to wait until I have tapered off of and been off the antibiotics for a few months before I try full caveman/paleo.
My diet has always been pretty good. I don't eat processed food and do mostly organic and starting in January I have been gluten free, which really helped my digestion issues from the anibiotics (plus I have celiac in my family it was about time). Recently I read that some gluten intolerant people have cross reactivity to coffee, dairy, and quinoa (I think there are some 24 posible cross reactive foods and people vary but those are the most common). I have always had problems with quinoa so as of last week I have cut dairy out too. It is easier to do one food at a time, more than that makes things stressful.
One thing I have learned is that probiotic foods are really important, and that your digestion is key. As I have cut down on the antibiotics I have beeen uping my probiotics, not just taking the supplements but started by drinking goat milk kefir everyday (which is technically dairy but goat milk has less of everything bad than cow milk and the fermentation process eats the lactose and sugars etc.) and then moved to add a little sauerkraut (the good refigerated active kind). I definely see a link between my digestion and my skin. It has been looking pretty good! Not totally clear but getting there.
I have kept with the dead sea salt spray at night only and have been not even rinsing in the morning unless I worked out, then I will do a quick rinse in the shower. I have been letting it air dry which has helped I think a good deal. At night I have been spraying then letting it dry then jumping in the shower in order to rinse. I was finding that splashing water on my face was hard to do and I felt like my hands were still touching my skin too much and moving oils around ( I know that sounds like overkill).
So, I am inching closer to paleo diet, and full caveman regimine. But I don't want to switch it up until I am free of the antibiotics and have done the sea salt for 3 months. I still think I am having the same kinds of reactions. My skin got really flaky and I have been able to lightly sloff it off with a clean fingernail. I still have some congestion on my forehead and am not completely clear but I am happy with it so far. It looks healthier and smoother and more managable.
So, I am almost off the antibiotics and my skin hasn't gotten worse from what I can tell. I am still using the sea salt but now only in the shower. It did get worse first in the adjustment period and it broke out in places I hadn't broken out before, but now I am not breaking out everyday. Which is huge and I can' help but think it because I am not exfoliating anymore and my skin doesn't produce much oil anymore. This might have more to do with the fact that I cut out dairy but I think my reduced skincare regimine has helped.
I will be totaly off the antibiotics in just about 3 weeks and I was worried I would be worse off but I think it might be better off for it. I am doing a lot of probiotics now and once I get off the antibiotics completely I am going to do a candida cleanse and/or paleo. At that point I will have done the dead sea salt for 3 months and I will decide to keep at it or go full caveman.
I think my skin was originally upset by the hormone fluctuations from my birthcontrol fiasco, then contiunued by using harsh skincare products like proactive for a full year or more, then I screwed up my digestion with a bunch of antibiotics on and off for the last 3 years or so. Now I am letting my body regulate itself for the most part. When my skin initially broke out, I also broke out on my chest and back. That cleared up all on it's own. I wish I had just let my face be and it most likely would have resolved itself. At least I will have better advice for my kids when they are dealing with this stuff. I will update again when I have more to post.
you need to allow your skin to restore its acid mantle, without it youll be prone to bacterial infection, which may or may not be from digestion or diet. google acid mantle, full on paleo would be best in your case, the less you do to your skin the more it allows it to function as it should. if your skin is dry i would recommend doing baths to hydrate your skin instead of showers, showers do not allow for proper hydration, soak your face (hold your breath) under the water for awhile, as if you were swimming, this allows the skin to absorb water and naturally hydrate the skin. sea salt baths are good, but again you aren't allowing for proper absorption when you just spray it on the skin, thats not how you mimic the ocean. fill up the bath tub, put a cup of sea salt in it, soak for a good while. do not rub your face, do not scrub your skin, do not dry it with a towel, allow it to air dry on its own, do not physically touch your skin.
I wanted to give an update. My skin is still slowly but surely healing itself. It is still flakey in parts but I have not exfoliated once. I have been off the antibiotics for over a month now and my skin has not retaliated. Just the slow steady improvement. I have been doing the splashing instead of spraying again for a few months I'd say. But that's it, I do nothing more. I started wearing makeup again too, and I just don't wash it off. It comes off on it's own if I don't wear any for a few days but it hasn't made me break out more.
It has been 3 months since I washed my face with soap (that was the slip up I had) and I think it will be another 3 for my scaring to start to really go away. My skin definetly got worse before it got better. My digestion is still wonky even after going off the antibiotics for a month plus, and using a lot of probiotics. But overall my skin is becoming real skin again.
It has been awhile since I posted, two months. I wanted to give an update. I guess it has been 3 months finally off the antibiotics. I have stuck with dairy free and I take probiotics and zinc. My skin is really starting to look good. I don't break out much anymore unless I eat a bunch of sugar or chocolate. I still have the minor pimple or two, but not every day and they are small uninflamed and hang out on the side of my face away from view. Really the only areas I break out at all are areas I still touch/pick ocassisonaly.
It's amazing really I used to not let anything touch my face I would freak out and then break out there. My skin is healed now where that doesn't happen. I am still doing the dead sea salt splash in the shower (only the once a day) and let it drip dry. I never exfoliated to remove dead skin. I still have some dead dry skin that flakes if I pick or scratch and becomes more visable when I put makeup on. But it doesn't bother me too much. If I went totally caveman or water only maybe that would be less but for now I am happy to stick with my routine. I still have scarring but each month that gets better and after having bouts of severe acne, mild acne for now or for however long is fine with me. Maybe in a year I will taper off the sea salt too and go alnatural. I think that is best with aging skin anyway. I will probably wait until the scarring is gone completely.
Anyway, I am happy. FInding the healthiest way to heal for yourself and sticking to it really will heal your skin! The best thing is to read and study up to really understand how it works to best support it rather than try to attack it.

Maybe ur still getting the dead/dry skin cause of the sea salt? I did it once a while ago and it made my skin soooo dry. But good job to stick through it.
