Rosacea and Strange Skin Texture On Parts of Face

Hi everyone!

First post here, I was wondering if anyone could help me with some issues I'm having that I'm pretty sure are related to Rosacea, and/or sun-damage.

I'm 24, male, and I've had facial flushing for awhile now but never thought about it, my dermatologist said it was rosacea (I already figured it was but that just confirmed it), and not Lupus. I have a butterfly pattern of redness (flushing?) that is under both my eyes (between my nose and my cheeks), and on the bridge of my nose. Sometimes my face gets very hot, I even have a fan at my desk to point at my face. The heat doesn't really happen frequently enough for it to be a serious problem though.

However, the redness doesn't really bother me (I think it's almost cute). What bothers me is the strange skin texture that seems to accompany it. It's sort of leathery I guess. If I see it in the right light, I can definitely see enlarged pores (or what looks like enlarged pores) on the red areas, and some on my forehead. It seems to only be on the red areas, and on my forehead (which doesn't really seem to get red, maybe the very bottom near my eyebrows) and the rest of the skin on my face seems pretty nice.

Also, some areas of my forehead (mostly near the sides/temples) seem to have a "fish scale" texture, or snake skin, I'm not really sure how to describe it, maybe "grainy", or orange peel skin combined with leather? I thought it might be Ichthyosis Vulgaris or something. The skin on the rest of my body is pretty much perfect. If I stretch my forehead, on some areas I can see what looks like hair follicles/bumps.

If I scratch any of those areas with my nails, some very fine dead skin appears, but I avoid doing this, just to see if it's dead skin.

Also, as for my skin care habits prior to this, they were pretty bad. I'd wash my face in the shower with bar soap (the same soap I'd use everywhere else) until it was literally squeaky clean. I never used sunscreen, moisturized, or anything like that (also got back from Europe 4 months ago, basically 12 hours a day of serious sun exposure).

Now, my regimen as of maybe 3 weeks ago, I don't use soap on my face at all, but rather apply a lot of coconut oil before I shower and just rinse whatever I can off with water in the shower, then just pat it dry with a towel. I moisturize with olive oil a few times a day too, after I use a mixture of one part Apple Cider Vinegar to one part distilled water to wipe my face (supposedly it's a toner). I might be over moisturizing, but since the things I'm using are natural, I thought the skin would just absorb whatever it could and the rest would just remain on the surface to be wiped away or whatever. I might also try a green tea facial toner, brewing a cup of green tea, letting it cool and wiping my face with it prior to moisturizing.

My diet is basically Paleo but with occasional beans and sweet potatoes. Also I drink too much coffee, trying very hard to replace it with green tea.

I thought an acid peel (glycolic acid or something) might help my texture, and since I moisturize so much already, the extra moisture requirements wouldn't be a problem.

I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who would ever possibly notice this, but it still bothers me!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi

I'd get red flushing, sweats, super oily skin and orange peel pores withroughness . Fan on my face all the time Is something i can relate to.

First thing u should do iSsort out your skin care routine to see how u respond,

1, gentle cleanser AM . Exfoliating cleanser PM (Preferably chemical with abbrasives -2 days per week minimum)

2. Your green tea toner is good, add 50% black tea 50% green tea. this is what I use. Straight after cleansing

3. spf moisturiser AM - (Preferably with antioxidants included)

3. moisturiser PM - Gentle moisturiser with antioxidants

4. PM Use some form of night serum.. VIt C, OR aha, or peptide, etc..

5. You can add a stronger monthly/quartlerly chemical peel. But get the basic good routine down first

Cleansing -massage well.

Moisturising - massage well

PM Serums - lightly spread

Now the above is a basic routine, I absolutly recommend u try something like the above as a regime then see how things are in 6-8weeks.. before adding possible supplements like omega3's etc..

You need a structured cleansing, moisturising+spf, night serum schedule as a foundation. Then other things can be added like chemical peels, or derma rolling etc.. but get your foundation down first

Ok, thanks a lot!

I'm still pretty new to my skincare routine, I had absolutely no routine before this.

Is it possible to go natural with the stuff you mention? I really don't trust most of the ingredients in facial cleansers etc. For example, I just cleanse my face with coconut oil while in the shower, and just rinse whatever I can off and pat dry. I'd use olive oil though if I want to cleanse without showering, coconut oil is much more oily. Also I tone with Apple Cider Vinegar every day (1 part ACV 1 part distilled water). I assume this is good for cleansing too, at least a bit, since it's acidic.

I also do raw honey face masks every other day or so for maybe 10-15 minutes, technically that's a "cleanser" too?

Moisturizer I think I'm good with, I simply use olive oil and rub it onto my face/neck a few times a day (not counting coconut oil pre-shower).

The only thing I'm having trouble with is the exfoliating part. I guess I could make some sort of olive oil/cinnamon or olive oil/cane sugar thing?

I'm definitely going to try the acid peel, probably glycolic acid, since if I scratch my cheeks next to my nose or even on my forehead I definitely get some very small dead skin off.

Thanks again!

EDIT: I'm just wondering if it's possible to moisturize too much, when I put olive oil on my face is really shiny until I wipe it off.

That's interesting, thanks!

The only things I use on my face (skin) right now are indeed natural, EV Olive Oil, Virgin Coconut Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Aloe Vera juice, etc.

I'll look into the fruit enzymes, that looks interesting.

The thing that was really bothering me was that I thought it might be premature aging or something, but since the skin on the rest of my body and face looks great (besides on the forehead, and either side of nose like I mentioned, basically the rosacea areas), I'm assuming that's not it. And honestly, when I moisturize with a lot of EVOO or Coconut Oil, even the rosacea areas look more or less alright (still a bit grainy with the extra shine though).

Thanks again

EDIT: If I scrunch my nose up, or raise my cheeks, I can definitely see some pretty big pores on the rosacea areas.

Hey all,

I think I came up with a good skin care regimen based on your feedback, if I could get some tips or confirmation it would be great

1. In morning, cleanse face with raw honey (leave on for as long as I can but more likely a minute or two), then wash off with water.

2. Tone with a mixture of 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar to 1 part distilled water (I will probably alternate this toner with undiluted Aloe Vera Juice, then green tea, depending on what I have available)

3. Moisturize with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

4. Before shower, apply a thick film (thick as in face is very shiny, like soaked in Coconut Oil) of EV Coconut Oil to my face (and hair/scalp, but that's another story), then shower after at least 20 minutes, and simply wash/scrub off with water from the shower, no soap.

5. Post shower, apply EV Olive Oil (I heard this was the best time due to your face being damp/pores opened due to steam).

6. Apply EV Olive Oil throughout the rest of the day as needed.

7. At night, cleanse with raw honey same as before, then apply thin layer of EV Olive Oil.

8. Apply sunscreen anytime I go out.

9. Exfoliate perhaps twice a week with a mixture of 1 part EV Olive Oil to 1 part Sea Salt (still fine tuning this one, how hard do I actually rub with an exfoliant?).

10. Periodically rub lemon slices on face?

I'm still wondering how hard I should be "massaging" when I rub the oils etc into my face though

I'm still thinking about a glycolic acid peel to help with my leathery/grainy skin issue, I have a doc appointment in a few days though so I'll wait. It will definitely be a very low percentage at first.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again all

I'm not sure you wanna " Periodically rub lemon slices on face" as lemon is highly acidic, and may cause more redness and dryness on rosacea skin.

Hey, thanks for the input

But isn't ACV also acidic, but supposedly balances the PH level of the skin? As for dryness, is it alright if I just moisturize a lot with EV Olive Oil, as I do already?

Hey again all

I just took some photos of my problem areas, I uploaded them to photobucket with a direct link, I thought it would be much easier than putting them here since the file size of the pictures is big (but quality is high).

I labeled them all, here they are:

Right side of nose:

Left side of nose:

Center of forehead;

Left side of forehead:

Right side of forehead:

On the pictures of the sides of my forehead, they don't really do it justice, because there are areas with a "fish scale" like texture, the scales are more square, or something like that I guess.

I apparently wasn't flushing much today so there's not much redness, but I think the photos do a good job of showing the texture.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks! And thanks for all the help so far!

EDIT: I should add, the more I examine my face closely, the more it looks like photo damage/sun damage from the trip to Europe. The skin doesn't look aged and wrinkly, it just looks...Grainy, rough, leathery, etc.

Of course the areas on either side of my nose on my cheeks can probably be easily attributed to the rosacea.

I'm also going to start taking gelatin powder to support skin health (among a few other supplements I'm already taking).

I know you said you were new to the skincare routine and I can understand why you would want to be using all natural remedies such as olive oil as a moisturizer. However, sometimes it is better for your skin to give it nutrients and a boost that oils like olive oil alone cant provide.

This doesnt mean you will always have to use a moisturizer or anti redness cream. But getting your skin to a very healthy baseline will help you transition to your olive oil routine in the future.

Skin is very delicate. As someone who turns red in the face a lot, I can tell you that it pays big to put the effort into face wash, moisturizer, skin care creams, and, like youre doing, eating healthy.

Thanks, I think eating properly is often overlooked in many health issues (surprisingly)

I'll look into some of those facial products, I'll make sure to read the ingredients though as I don't want any nasty chemicals, maybe if I stick to good brands I won't have to worry about that

Thanks again!

UPDATE:

Hey all, I should mention my doc prescribed me something called "Metrogel" or something, supposed to apply twice a day to affected rosacea areas (both sides of nose, and areas surrounding it) after cleaning the area first. Says to leave on for five minutes then apply usual moisturizer.

Still have to see what I will do about my facial skin care routine, until then I'm keeping it simple, oil cleansing, moisturizing with EVOO/Coconut Oil, etc.

I also asked if it was some weird premature aging thing and he said no, so that's very reassuring.

EDIT: I've been meaning to take a complete vitamin B complex for awhile now but never got around to it, I've read a few things about its connection to rosacea too, wonder how that will turn out, might help

This is an old thread but I feel compelled to share what worked for me. Like magic. I previously tried the metro gel and while it succeeded in removing the redness, that awful leather texture remained. This made it completely impossible to wear foundation without looking terrible, cakey and flaky. About a month ago I received a moisturizer sample and had nothing else on hand so I put it on. For the first time in years my skin was much smoother. Turns out it contains hyalauronic acid. I was on to something. Went to Sephora to inquire if they had something similar. A nice girl helped me and my skin is now a miracle.
The 2 products are called Water Drench Hyalauronic Cloud Serum by Peter Thomas Roth and also Facial Radiance Pads by First Aid Beauty.
All I do now is cleanse as normal. Then use a radiance pad and follow up with the serum. I can wear foundation and my skin is soft again. The serum is not cheap, about $80 but IT'S SO WORTH IT! so if you live near a Sephora grab a free sample of both and try them. It made a world of difference for me.

Good luck :)
