Hello everyone,
I am a 27 years old girl who used to have a pretty nice skin and now is FULL of acne.
I have polycystic ovary syndromeand I actually had surgery because of that a year ago. Since then, my skin went crazy. I never had to use much makeup and now even with makeup, I don't want to go out.
I am pale, blonde and with sensitive skin, so topic treatments usually are not enough, and if they are enough, they are too harshfor my delicate skin.
I want to start a hormonal treatment as I used to,because I didn't have acne before.I used to take Yasmin, for about 8 years.
I do not want to go back to Yasmine because I think there may be better options out there. I tried YAZbut I was literally bleeding ALL THE TIME - ALL MONTH.
Someone recommended me NUVARING but I read a post on this forum saying that is actually really bad for acne.
Now I have a box of Yaz, a Nuvaring, I don't know what to do,and honestly I don't trust my doctor because the two last times that I trusted doctors for this my skin got much worst.
Does anyone here has the same cystic adult acne on cheeks caused by acne? What worked for you? I really want to try Nuvaring but now I am scared!
Please help me, I don't know how to solve this alone.
Thank you SO much,
-B
Hi BlackNerve, sorry to hear about your trouble
With your sensitive skin Epiology anti-acne cream would be worth a try either on its own or as a companion to any prescription meds you use. Just use it in place of your current moisturiser for a while and see how it goes. Look up epiologyskincare.com and good luck.
Hi Blacknerve,
It's different and unique for everyone but if it makes you feel better, I was on the NuvaRing and it really helped with my acne -- but I came off of it eventually for other reasons. I don't have PCOS but I did have one ovarian cyst rupture and at various points in my medical history my androgen levels were too high. There are also a lot of anti-androgenic herbs that you could look into, many of which help with PCOS and the excess androgens associated with it (here's a good starting place: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3693613/) -- but I would check in with your endocrinologist or dermatologist before trying anything especially if you are on medications or find yourself a good herbalist to work with you. Following a diet to reduce androgen levels (in addition to some herbs and supplements) really helped get my acne back under control, but I do still break out it's just not as bad as it was at one point when my DHEA levels were really high (I had undiagnosed Lyme disease for years though so I always wonder how much that has affected my physiology). I have a degree in Nutrition and worked with a Chinese medicine herbalist. People have a lot of success with hormonal therapies too, it's just challenging because we never fully know how our bodies respond until we take a chance. I know spironolactone is another hormonal option, but I don't have experience with it. Best of luck to you and I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing this, I know it can be really hard on self-esteem. The last time I had a huge breakout, I tried to be really kind and compassionate to my skin and myself through the whole thing and it was a refreshing break from the years past where I would get really frustrated with my body.
