Hello, I'm new here and hoping to connect with adults who are currently on higher doses of B5. I'm 38 yrs old now. 14 years ago, In 2001, after YEARS of trying everything, including all sorts of Rx's, I found the study on B5. I had moderate to severe acne since my early teens. My whole face was covered, either with larger zits and a rash of smaller zits everywhere - not one part of my face was clear. In 2001, after much research I started with B5. I went from high doses of 12g to a maintenance dose of 4-5g. After a couple of months, I had beautiful clear skin. I can't remember exactly how long, but I think I used B5 for about 2 - 3 years on doses from 1 -3 grams per day (after the initial 6 months of high doses). Eventually my skin was so great, that I simply stopped. I got tired of buying the supplements. My acne never came back. My skin was pretty good for the last 14 years, a couple of pregnancies, stress, diets, all affected it but not majorly. Recently, after a lot of stress and lack of sleep my skin is breaking out again like the teenage years. My pores are huge as well. I'm returning to B5. This time though I am buying the powder, and will mix it with water.
I'm curiously to see how my skin will react. Its been almost 15 years...I wonder if it'll have the same affect.
I remember that B5 was like a miracle. I used to go to a specialized acne clinic, where I would get injections to reduce the cysts...all sorts of RX's were prescribed...I think I had "dry ice" ? treatments there, where they freeze your face and extract blackheads...all sorts of things. I was on topical, oral antibiotics, birth control...all sorts of other topical treatments. Some work for short periods, and then the acne came back worse. B5 was incredible.
Anybody out there starting or taking B5 in their adult years? Any luck? Side effects?
Thanks.
I found this topic and wanted to share my story with b5. Back when I first joined this forum I saw people talking about b5 and thought I would give it a shot. I took about 5 grams a day for a few months until I saw some clearing and 12 years later I am still using it but in much smaller doses. I currently pop a couple 500mg pills every few days for maintenance. For me b5 was not a cure but it helped tremendously in reducing breakouts and acne on my face. When used in conjunction with a proper regimen I believe it will help anybody suffering from acne. Make it a part of your regimen and you will see some good results.
B5 realistically shouldn't be exceeding 2G-3G p/day MAX. B5 doesn't do anything to the bacterium, P. Acnes rather it increases lipolytic capabilities (lipid catabolism) and our skin is comprised of lipids. Hence an increase in lipolytic capabilities help increase secondary activities associated with our skin's cellular turnover rate and ease of epithelial shedding (helps those with hyperkeratinization, sebum overproduction).
With that being said there is questionable research data that either provides too many inconsistencies for realistic consideration or the anecdotal response that most report is completely counteractive to the controlled.

I guess that makes some sense. I have really oily skin so b5 helps with the sebum production.

Introduction
"The purpose of this study was to determine the safety, tolerability and effectiveness of daily administration of an orally administered pantothenic acid-based dietary supplement in men and women with facial acne lesions."
Conclusions
The results from this study indicate that the administration of a pantothenic acid-based dietary supplement in healthy adults with facial acne lesions is safe, well tolerated and reduced total facial lesion count versus placebo after 12weeks of administration. Secondary analysis shows that the study agent significantly reduced area-specific and inflammatory blemishes. Further randomized, placebo-controlled trials are warranted.
