acne is a type of bacteria and like many bacterial infections drs prescribe antibiotics. if you had strep throat they would prescribe an antibiotic because your body isnt fighting off the infection oh it's own. I tried doryx and minocyclin which eventually didnt work until i started accutane. i never had acne as a teen... i didnt get it until i went off the depo shot. the only thing ive tried that drys them up fairly quickly is tea tree oil.. other than that i tried chem peels, different washes, prescribed creams, antibiotics which has minimal effects.I hope your skin gets better! --i know how upsetting and depressing acne can be.

I get -why- they prescribe antibiotics, but you have to understand - I've been dealing with acne for 15 years off and on. Before they put me on Accutane in middle school I tried multiple antibiotics and none worked. Once it came back at age 22 I tried multiple antibiotics again before deciding to stay away. Like I said, Accutane isn't an option at this point for a few reasons. First, my current insurance doesn't cover it. Second, I'm married and not on birth control and am not willing to go on birth control because of severe side effects I've had in the past. Such is life. I guess I'll keep looking for solutions. Thanks for your response!
spiro? or if you have money look into photodynamic treatments with an acid applied on your skin (ALA) followed by red and blue lights, there is downtime and it's not covered by insurance but the reviews are positive
you aren't on any active treatments really, why not try the acne.org routine, BP works wonders for a lot of people...and why not try a retin A cream...you've got options
and the diet, never mind what anyone says you decide for yourself, and think about ditching dairy that is a trigger for many...gluten too, those two were big triggers for my cystic acne, tough to make those changes but I did
I know what you mean, I'm older but one thing about my oily skin is that I look MUCH younger then everyone I went to school with...small consolation...

Like I said, I want to avoid drugs if I can. I was offered spiro a year ago and decided not to use it after looking into the side effects. I definitely don't have the money for the treatments you're suggesting! I'm kind of holding out for better insurance, which will hopefully happen later this year. Right now I'm covered by the VA.
I have tried BP and retin A in the past. Extensively, actually. While they did work some, neither completely cleared me up. I might try the acne.org routine just to say I tried. Sometimes it just seems like this will never go away.
I don't eat dairy, at least not beyond an occasional ice cream once a month or so. My allergist tested me for a gluten allergy yesterday and I'm waiting on the results. I did completely eliminate dairy and gluten for several months though and my skin never completely cleared up either!
Maybe you can see why this is so frustrating! I feel like I've exhausted my options and, while most things work to a point, nothing has cleared me up completely. Despite seeing many dermatologists and "acne specialists" over many years. I'll keep trying though!
