Hi, i'm 24 yo male living in the hot and humid Singapore. WHen I was a teenager, I wouldn't say I had clear skin, but nothing noticeable. I look pretty much flawless in photos and maybe 1 or 2 blemishes if you were to look at me up close (say, the usual distance in social events). However, I recently started gym habits and even took protein/testosterone supplements. While my body is getting better in shape, my face is getting worst! I stopped whatever supplements I took and even stopped gym for awhile now (partly due to studies). Initially I thought my breakout would only lasted for sometime, but it seems it just non stop breaking out. Spots that healed returns on the exact same spot and never really subside. I drink plenty of water, eat fruits and had quite a healthy diet (lots of veges, etc) But its still getting from bad to worse!

Well I should mention that after I stopped those sups, I went to see a doc who prescribe me Accutane (i don't even know how damaging it is back then, and my acne isn't even severe back then!) so I took for 2 weeks straight. 1 pill per night. It cleared me up pretty good. My skin was back to flawless. But then I developed body rashes and I know I had to stop. i was given 2 week dose anyway. My acne came back tenfold. I admit I was getting kinda disfigured. Now its near christmas, and the damage is done. My both cheeks are filled with scars if not bumps that would not seem to go away. Everytime it heals, new ones emerged. I don't want to go back to the doctor, or any other doc as I think they don't help at all and is only sucking my money.

For topical treatmeants, I tired everything. I did oatmeal clay mask twice a week, apply aloe vera gel on my acne during the day and BP 2.5% at night. I'm not using a harsh cleanser (i know so cuz i was using this cleanser for quite sometime even before my breakouts). I recently ordered zinc picolinate supplement and I hope I would get results from it. Else I really don't know what else I should do. I really don't wanna go back to the doc to get accutane :(

The effects of added testosterone can last a long time.

I would start taking anti-DHT herbs (yes, they are safe for males, they were originally used for prostate health and balding) such as saw palmetto, stinging nettle, pygeum, or pumpkin seed oil.

No, I don't think zinc helps except in limited cases.

What is Saw Palmetto?

Saw palmetto is better known for its ability to help treat BPH in men; however, the primary active constituents within saw palmetto may also help reduce the severity of acne. According to the University of Maryland Medical center the primary constituents of this herb include plant sterols, fatty acids and flavonoids.
Saw palmetto contains a high concentration of polysaccharides, which are used by the human body to enhance the immune system as well as work as an anti-inflammatory. One of the primary benefits of saw palmetto is its ability to hinder the transformation of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which is also known as DHT.

Effectiveness on Acne:

While the studies regarding saw palmetto and acne are limited, several studies have found that the oral consumption of saw palmetto may help reduce the severity of hormone-driven acne in women and men.

According to the Southbury Clinic for Traditional Medicines and Catalina Lifesciences, researchers have found that when testosterone undergoes the conversion process to DHT, the shifting in hormone levels can result in acne in both men and women. This conversion can also cause baldness and prostate enlargement in men.

The cause of an increase in pimples is due to the overproduction of sebum within your oil glands. This overproduction clogs your pores, which results in inflammation and pimples.

Although initial research of saw palmetto for the treatment of acne is promising, Dr. Richard Fried writes in the report "Saw Palmetto as a Treatment for Acne" that the effectiveness of saw palmetto for acne treatment will vary from person to person.

Dosage:

Although the scientific community has not released an official dosage of saw palmetto for the treatment of acne, the University of Maryland Medical Center suggests users consume 160 mg of saw palmetto two times per day. Make sure that the supplement is comprised of a minimum of 85 percent fatty acids and plant sterols.

Thank you GreenGables for replying! I'm still a little skeptical about SP after going through the forums especially on males :/ Any males took SP and had huge success here?

If you look in the "oily skin" forum there are positive results on there.

Looking for some advice on accutane. I am a 27 year old male. Have mild acne 1-2 pimples a week at most, nothing cystic at all. However, it comes and it goes and all the other treatments do treat it and it gets better. However, it comes back. BP seems to work the best. I have tried everything though, you name it. I have had it for 10 years. But again it's mild. Sometimes I don't get a zit for a few weeks, I know it could be worse believe me, but it does really bother me like everyone else. I went to a DERM and she surprisingly gave me 20mg of accutane to start, and she was hesitant at first but did it. I am really concerned about trying it after doing all the research. I am active, and exercise a lot. Don't want the sore the joints. I also am very concerned about the initial breakout (IB). I mean my acne is not that bad right now. Is there a possibility it wont get worse, and I won't get an IB? I have read so much and just want some advice. My acne is not that bad, and paying 1000$+ to make it worse at first seems like a big risk along with all the other side effects. I can't make up my mind. I bought the clavaris yesterday for 220$ again 20mg a day for the first month. Low dose to start, I only weigh 160LBs. I may return it, and hold off as I have some important events coming up this summer. What is shaving like with it? And does no one use any other treatment while on- benzoyl peroxide, AHA for pigmentation etc... Thanks to all! Hope you conquer ACNE. I know it sucks and it affects everyone differently but somewhat the same. Cheers!

Accutane can do a number on you so if you haven't started already, i would recommend looking for alternate treatment. 1-2 pimples a week sounds like heaven to me and the fact that you have clear periods...well....enough said. For mild acne, have you tried diet changes. If diet is the issue, you should clear up pretty quickly with mild acne.

Yeah I am taking a probiotic now... I eat pretty damn health. Almost no dairy besides cheese occasionally. Digestion is definitely something that I was curious about. But I do eat meat. Mostly paleo. I've also researched low stomach acid. I found out I can get Ziana for 30$. Currently I am on the regimen DK but it helps but doesn't ultimately prevent it. Again 2-3 pimples a week max. But if I got the Ziana id prolly do that as a spot treatment
