I have actually read every post in this log so I feel like I already know all of you
Tiger- yes I am very very active. I run 5 days and week and also do strength training. I'm hoping my joints won't be too bad!
I have a little shopping list I will be getting this month to help combat all the symptoms- so any opinions would be great! I am also single and (trying!) to date¦no one wants to date the girl with the bloody nose, cracked lips, or dry skin (but this might be better than the current state of my face!)
- Fish Oil
- Vitamin E
- Pill Box
- Eucerin Cream (I heard this was good for your face¦ any other suggestions to put on day and night?)
- Gentle Body wash
- Pure Shea Butter (hands!)
- Lip Balm¦ seems Jack Black is the favorite here
- Eye drops
- Vaeline
- Aquifer? I read a few reviews that said this was harsh¦ but I know I can't be using the ones with the beads during this treatment.
Any other suggestions??
Last question-
The day you all started your accutane- did you immediately start moisturizing¦ or did you keep using Epiduo/Retin A until the skin was clear? Or just spot treat?
Thank you Ladies¦ Have a great day!

I've never had a nosebleed in my life, either. I have had lots of unruly dried bloody boogers (ew, right?) and sometimes my nose feels sore. Is it a smallish amount of blood that comes out or are you guys bleeding for a few minutes? I'm just curious as to the extent of the nosebleeds.
Hi Zodi! So glad you're taking the plunge. I'm in your age bracket and passionate about exercise and nutrition...it sounds like you like to run, eh?
Awesome...keep it up if you love it. The 30 day countdown sucked for me. I think mine was actually 36 or 38 until I actually got the medicine. Prepare for miscommunication between the doctors, pharmacy, and iPledge. Unless you're lucky and it all goes well.
I love your accutane survival list so far, but I have some suggestions that can save you money and unnecessary products.
Aquaphor! The BEST! Get the regular kind in the tube, not the small aquaphor lip stuff. That one blows.
Vitamin E is great, but it's a nutrient that works in synergy with other foods and nutrients, so it's usually best to get it from eating foods. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and works with Vitamin C, selenium, and B3 to protect your cells from damage. It's also fat-soluble which is why it's in almonds and other nuts and seeds. Vitamins from foods are also absorbed better in general. Here are some foods high in vitamin E which will help keep your skin moisturized and less prone to free radical damage: [Removed]
Unless your doctor says it's okay to take it. I just worry about toxicity when we're already stressing our bodies with the accutane, combined with what we're already getting in our diets.
I didn't buy eye drops until a few weeks into treatment, because I wasn't sure which ones to get. I ended up needing the moderate to severe gel drops by Genteal. So, you could wait and see how bad it is...then you won't buy something that doesn't suit your needs. Just a thought.
I stopped all topicals 2 weeks before starting to give my skin a rest. It was so inflamed, that it felt good to not use harsh retinoids and benzoyl peroxide. The inflammation was killing my face, so...I'm sure you can use your stuff up until treatment, but I would stop right when you start. I started drying out a week or two in...it happened fast for me.
Moisturizing in the AM and PM is a really good way to go, because then you'll prevent irritation and unnecessary dryness before it gets out of hand. It's interesting how some of the gals here don't moisturize at night, but I have to, or my face will literally peel and hurt to move. Plus, red marks seem to fade faster when I moisturize more. I think it allows for less irritated skin, which is healthier skin, which then regenerates faster. Just my theory though.
As for moisturizers, people love Cerave. I use REN's moisturizer for dry skin because it's pure and doesn't contain mineral oil, which clogs my pores. As for drugstore stuff, I also liked Burts Bees moisturizer for sensitive skin with cotton extract. Josie Maran spf 40 is great for daytime, and so is Neutrogena spf 50 for sensitive skin. Otherwise, it's lots of trial and error with moisturizers. I tried A LOT to find one that I loved. The REN one sinks right in, smells like roses, and calms red skin. I love it! No greasiness either.
I hope at least some of this helps you.
Hi Gina!
Thank you for all the details! I will ask about the vitamins. I'm mostly concerned with this not affecting my joints so I can keep being active.
I will get some aquifer¦ I ordered the Jack Black stuff Rachel seems to love (at least in the beginning!) because I'm outside all day and want something with the SPF in it. I also took Rachel's advice and ordered the Cure Aqua Gel- I can't wait to try that and see what it's like without the beads! As far as eye drops, I'm guessing I will need some. I've never heard of the ones you suggested¦ I had lasik eye surgery like 9 years ago- and dry eyes is a side effect I'm having to deal with every morning. I typically use the Visine Tears when I first wake up and am good to go. I hope this doesn't get too bad...
Oh- I also ordered some pure Shea Butter from Amazon¦. I had a big tub of it and it lasted me like 3 years. I think it will be great to use nightly on extra dry spots (hands, feet, knees, elbows). I think I will be someone that needs to moisturize- so thank you for the suggestions! I have one from Ole Henrikson (can get at Sephora). It's the oil-free version of Sheer Transformation. This stuff has never broken me out- but it is $$$. I'm not sure if it really does everything it claims it does- but it has a wonderful texture (it's supposed to also help with marks or hyper pigmentation)
Ok- off to work for me-- have a good day!

Day 54
So, as I've mentioned before, I get my blood work done on Tuesday. My cholesterol and triglycerides were high last month, but my derm wasn't concerned. I figured I'd still try to do something to lower them though. However, I'm sure I can't do much in a few days. I figured some exercise couldn't hurt, so I decided to do some running yesterday. Unfortunately, as I've also mentioned, it's been super hot here lately. Most days are 100, so it's just not logical to go outside and run. So, I opted to do a run on the old Wii Fit Plus game I had sitting on my shelf. I ran for an hour and let me tell you... I never exercise. And I was already achy from Accutane. So, I am soooo sore. Lol.
Anyway. There has been absolutely no changes to my skin. No actives. I haven't had any new acne in weeks. I can't remember when the last new zit was. I guess it was when this thing on my left cheek developed. It's still in its processing of going away, but it sure is taking it's sweet time. I wish it would heal already!
I went to the mall with friends today and dropped some cash in Sephora. It kills me to look at all the lipsticks and glosses because I can't use them now with my lips being dry! Not to mention I bought a few new lipsticks earlier this year (gorgeous pinks and corals!!) and I can't wear them with dry lips. Grr!
Yaaay for no new actives!
So you really can't wear lipstick because your lips are so chapped?? THAT makes me nervous! I love me some pretty lipstick I keep telling myself it won't be so bad if I'm constant about the lip balm (am I lying to myself?!)
I can't wait for my Cure Aqua Gel to get in (I love new products!) Right now I'm almost out of the Sheer Transformation Cream and I'm trying to decide if I want to drop the $$ for more or get something more simple and budget friendly...

Awesome that you have no new actives! That is amazing that you can't even remember when your last zit was! Crazy how long it takes everything to go away and heal isn't it?
Ugh Sephora, I love it there. I could go broke if I visit there or spend to much time in that store. The way you are with the lip glosses and lipsticks I am with nail polish. I could buy like 20 new nail polishes every time I visit. It is a slight addiction..
Yaaay for no new actives!

Hey! You probably are fooling yourself. I wouldn't put lip sticks on my lips at this point. It would look terrible. I take wonderful care of my lips and they still are as chapped as ever. Peeling and shedding all day long. I use bag balm or aquaphor like every half hour and to no avail they still peel. It sucks. Be prepared for that! You do get used to it though. 🙂 Best of luck with your course

No new actives in a week! WOOO! It's such a great feeling. 🙂
I miss wearing lipstick! I think I'm going to go to Sephora and buy a nice colored lipstick when I'm done the course. That store is so tempting though, I always want to buy everything I see!
I've only had two nosebleeds on Accutane, but they haven't been bad. Just think of it like when you have a runny nose, but it's blood coming out instead. Lovely image, isn't it? Usually just lasts a couple minutes, if that, for me. It's not a ton of blood.
Yaaay for no new actives!

I'm so glad it's been weeks since I've had any zits pop up. Such a relief. 🙂
My lips don't look chapped. They look just like my normal pre-Accutane lips! (Although, the corners do get flaky at times, but that's easily remedied with the Cure gel.) However, the problem is, on Accutane we all need something moisturizing for the lips, which most lipsticks won't provide. My lips feel completely normal when they have Aquaphor or Bag Balm on them. But once the balms wear off, my lips start to feel dry and I have to reapply a balm right away. So, that's why I'm unable to wear lipsticks and glosses right now. They just aren't moisturizing enough.
I hope you like the Cure gel! Let me know how it works for you! It really has been great for getting the flakes off my face and keeping my lips looking nice! 🙂
What's Sheer Transformation Cream?
You ran for a hour? I would be sore as hell too! Hope you are feeling better today!

Yep! An hour! And my calves are still killing me! 🙁 Let me tell you... It is not fun trying to go up and down the stairs. I definitely shouldn't have run that long, but I didn't care. I didn't start feeling sore until the next day. What's worse is I bought these awesome running shoes yesterday and can't use them. (They're the Nike Free Run 3 in Hot Punch. Such a pretty, bright color!) I don't wanna push it though. I'm hoping my legs will feel a bit better tomorrow so I can put them to use.
It is crazy! The little ones just disappear so quick and the ugly one want to linger forever. Not fair!
Ohmygosh. Nail polish is an addiction too. You can never have too much! 🙂
No new actives in a week! WOOO! It's such a great feeling.

That would be a nice way to reward yourself after the course! New makeup!!!! 😛
Hmmm how do I quote so I can reply to multiple people and not end up copying the entire convo?
Anyway- BeautifulDisasters and Rachel- thank you for being so honest about the chapped lips. I think I can get through it- I mean- I really have no choice! The thought of no lipstick is really hard for me!! I do love Burt Bee's tinted "chapstick". The color is dark enough that it looks like lipstick but feels like moisturizing chapstick.
Kaydon- you only weigh 133 and you started on 60mg?? Isn't that high? I think I will be starting on 40mg and moving up to 60mg (I'm 115lbs). Did you have a bad IB? (I think I read somewhere that people seem to think if you start out high it will make the IB worse- who knows)
So my "weekend" was Thursday/Friday- and my face was TERRIBLE!!! I literally got 6 cysts overnight. Honestly 2 were medium, 1 was a monster, and the others were small but very raised. I didn't leave the house. I think the Solodyn is finally kicking in (I had tried Monodox before with no results) because they are all almost completely flat tonight (after 4 days that is fast). A SMALL part of me wanted this Solodyn to work and I wouldn't have to do the Accutane- but I'm really ready to get this over with. I think this is the best time in my life to do something that will potentially cure me from dealing with this later. Even if I stay clear the rest of this month, I don't want to risk going off this antibiotic and breaking out again. Grrrrr!!
Ok Sheer Transformation Cream that's a cream made by Ole' Henrikson. They make a version that is oil-free. This cream has never broken me out. In fact, when I first started dealing with this- my first line of combating it was using this cream in the morning (I also use their Truth-Serum) and then Retin-A micro at night. I could put this cream on pimples once they got to that stage where they are dried out, but still red. kinda "in-between" healing. It always helped to moisturize the area and never make it or the other areas break out. It is $$$ at Sephora- but I think it is worth it. I'm not 100% sure it does everything it says it does (it's supposed to help with hyper-pigmentation, etc). I have found it at a website that the shipping is free and there is a 20%off code:
http://www.skinstore.com/p-7271-ole-henriksen-sheer-transformation-creme.aspx
I think once I am on Accutane (and hopefully off) I will be using this in my regiment. I have a little melasmia (dark spots) from my birth control- and I have put Obagi Clear to keep that at bay for years my derm said I could also use this on red marks left over by acne but only if there are no new actives underneath.
Have you any of you ladies ever gone to Makeupalley.com ? It's awesome for reading reviews on new products before you purchase them. Most people seem to love Ole' Henrikson's products because they are "natural". (I also use their "On the Go" cleanser which is high in Vitamin C. It's like $30 for a bottle and I think the bottle will last a year).
Hope something I said was helpful! Have a great night (and morning!)

Day 55
Sore legs suck.
Hope all of you are doing well. I'll catch up with everyone while I'm at work tomorrow!
Rachel! Good for you for running! I'm sorry your legs are so sore though. I really hate that this medicine is making most of us so sore. I really was determined that if I took the fish oil it wouldn't happen to me but it is. I'm taking exercise breaks to help and it does make me feel better but then I'm depressed because I'm not exercising. My husband and I went for an hour bike ride yesterday and ran some stairs and my back was so sore at night I ended up having to sleep sitting up- arrrrgggghhhhh!! It's weird because sometimes I can go at it hard and feel fine and other times I feel like an 80 year old woman. I hate, hate, hate it. But my face is looking really good so I'm trying not to be too bummed out about the up and down soreness. I hope your legs start feeling better soon! 🙂

Hi Zodi! Yes, I started on 60MG a day and I weigh 133. Then for month three I was bumped up to 80MG a day and I will remain on this until the end of my course. I'm doing a 5 month course.
I found this cool log with a dosage caculator on it. ( http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/271565-accutane-treatment-doseduration-calculator/ ) It's an excel document. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but I know the basic formula for Accutane cumulative dosage is 120mg/kg.
This cumulative dose calculator said that my Recommended Cumulative Dose is 9049 if I were to stay on 60 throughout the whole 5 months. Since I did 60mg for two, and then 80mg for three, I will end this course with a total cumulative dosage of 10,800. This is definitely over the Recommended Cumulative Dose for my weight - but I had a pretty crappy IB. It lasted for about 3 months. It's weird though, because some people don't even go through an IB.
I've also heard that higher dosages means a more harsh IB. I'm happy to be on 80mg though, because I don't want to relapse down the road. I think starting at 40mg and moving to 60mg is perfect for being 115lbs! 🙂

Zodi, if you click "Multi-quote" at the bottom of posts, it'll allow you to easily quote more than one person at a time. If you're wondering about how when I quote there are often other quotes and text missing, that's because I delete the stuff I'm not directly responding to as a way to make it less cluttered.
I don't think the lips are that bad. I only feel them getting dry when the Aquaphor wears off. I used to use the Burt's Bees Mango Butter balm, but it's not moisturizing enough anymore. You definitely want something that will last!
I'm sorry to hear about the breakouts! 🙁 I hope they clear up quickly. Just stay strong and remember it'll all be worth it in the end!
I absolutely love Makeup Alley. It's my go-to source for beauty products! 🙂

Yeah, I'm not taking any kind of supplements for joint pain. I don't usually exercise, but when I do I'm never this sore, so I'm sure the Accutane is making it a bit worse. I do feel a little better today.
Sorry to hear about your soreness! Hopefully it'll go away. But it'll be worth it in the end to have clear skin!

I hope you won't have a bad initial breakout! I'm on 40mg, but I'll be staying at this dosage throughout my course, which is fine with me. I don't want to risk increasing my dosage and experiencing breakouts. 🙁 Especially since I'm at the point where my skin already seems to be staying clear.
I have had breakouts since starting, but most have been small and went away in a matter of days. I've had a few big ones that have been a pain, but my breakouts were nothing compared to what a lot of other people have experienced. I'm not sure if that is because of my dosage, having mild/moderate acne to begin with, taking doxycycline before starting Accutane, or that I just got lucky.
Day 55
Sore legs suck.
Hope all of you are doing well. I'll catch up with everyone while I'm at work tomorrow!
Sore legs do suck! Your shoes sound super cute and hopefully you get to use them again soon! I get like you mentioned with the walking down the stairs. If I work out to hard I will feel like that too! I can't even think about running or jogging on this medication though. My knees will swell up and it will hurt for a week to work out for 30 mins. Not worth it at this point in the game. I wish I could do something though. Swimming is good but I don't have access to a pool all that often. Oh well. I will start bike riding again after my course. Hope all is well 🙂
Day 56
Blood work tomorrow. My attempt to lower my cholesterol probably didn't go too well, but I don't care. I'm sure it's no big deal. My legs are feeling much better. I went for a walk around my neighborhood for a little less than an hour I guess. So glad the heatwave is finally over! And I got to use my new shoes! Even if it was only for walking. Hopefully I can do some running soon! I'll have to see how my Accutane body handles it again. I guess I'll ease into running and walk for now. All I know is, my body feels much better with a little exercise.
This damn spot on my left cheek just doesn't want to budge. It had been a scab, but now it looks like a head again. What the hell, zit?! I was so tired of looking at it. So... Tonight I took a hot washcloth and gentled rubbed the zit. I didn't know what it would do, but I didn't care. I rubbed the top off and it started bleeding. Now I'm letting it soak up some Neosporin.

Hope all is well
Oh my gosh, I loooove the shoes. They're these: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-1/pid-450901/pgid-450902 The Hot Punch color is so pretty! And they're incredibly comfortable!
Don't you hate not being able to go up and down the stairs right? It hurts!! It really sucks you can't do any exercising though. Have you tried just going for a walk or anything?
Hi Rachel! I love those shoes, so cute. I am needing new running shoes so I will have to look into those, so many cute colors to choose from. Hope your stubborn zit is healing nicely with the neosporin. Sometimes I feel like I could coat myself in that stuff, I put it on all the little cuts on my arms. I'm so glad Betsy told us about the cream, I like it so much better than the ointment. My sore back is actually feeling better today which is so weird because yesterday it was killing me - I couldn't even sneeze without being in pain but today it just doesn't hurt as much. I did put ice on it yesterday afternoon for a little while so that may be it - ice seems to do the trick for me as opposed to heat.
I am also about 115lbs and I'm starting at 40mg and moving up to 60mg after the first month. My dermatologist said that the lower initial dosage *should eliminate an initial breakout. I still won't be surprised if it does happen, but maybe it won't be as bad. (I'm only on Day 4)
I hope you won't have a bad initial breakout! I'm on 40mg, but I'll be staying at this dosage throughout my course, which is fine with me. I don't want to risk increasing my dosage and experiencing breakouts.
Especially since I'm at the point where my skin already seems to be staying clear.
I'm confident that our dosages are right for both of us! 🙂
Come visit my log, I'm starting to make updates 🙂

Those shoes are so cute!! I love them, and the color is awesome! I want pink running shoes now! Comfortable is even better!
I can go on walks and stuff with no problem but running and jogging is just to hard on my joints. How did the appt go today?
Day 57
Blood work was today. My arm is still a tiny bit sore. Other than that, there's nothing new except I have a couple zits on my back.
I'll catch up with everyone later! Gonna watch some Teen Mom. Lol. Even though the DirecTV/Viacom war all over my television screen is incredibly annoying...

I know! I love all the colors! They're so pretty!
Glad your back is feeling better! I guess the ice really helped!

Lol! They're so nice!
That really sucks about everything being so hard on your joints though. I couldn't imagine.
Appointment went fine. I got bandaged with a hot pink wrap with purple hearts! Lol. I'll find out Friday how everything is!
CUTE SHOES!!!!
I've been drooling over the new Nike's ever since I saw their commercial: [Removed]
haha I love it.
You didn't share your Sephora stash yet, did you? I'm ever curious!
I'm impressed you did all that work a few days to try to get your numbers down. Hopefully it's inspired some daily or long-term activities. You can't go wrong especially now that you have cute shoes. Hehe
Also, I read all the reviews on Makeupalley before making a big beauty purchase. SO HELPFUL. I need to write reviews. I feel bad for not contributing.
I am trying a different moisturizer tonight. Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Night Cream ($17). Free of parabens, pthlates, perfume, petroleum. It has cotton extract to soften and zinc to calm irritation, which is used to soothe babies' butts! Haha If it's good enough for a baby, it's good enough for my face. So far, my skin was a bit less red after applying and it seemed to hydrate pretty well. If it works better than my $55 REN moisturizer, I'll be pissed cause that means I over-spent. Don't you hate that?

I've seen that commercial! I didn't even realize they were the same shoes! Lol. They really are so comfortable. I love them!
I didn't share my Sephora purchases! I didn't even think about it. Didn't get anything too exciting. I just needed to pick up some more concealer (Make Up For Ever HD Concealer), and an eyelash comb. Lol. But I did get a Sephora eyeshadow palette I happened to see. I don't wear eyeshadow often, but I just loved the colors! It's the Sephora Moonshadow Baked Palette in the "In The Nude" colors. http://www.sephora.c...7?skuId=1325885
Oh, I'm definitely going to start running and walking regularly! I've always taken advantage of being naturally thin, so I never exercise. But I'm certainly not in shape! I've got the shoes. I ordered some Nike gear. So, if dropping $200+ on shoes and clothes doesn't get my butt moving, I don't know what will! I doubt the little I did before my blood work will help, but I'll find out Friday.
I'm glad some other people know about Makeup Alley! I seriously love that site. It's a definite must for me whenever I'm buying new products! It always saves me from buying things that most people say are crappy.
Lmao! That moisturizer sounds really great! Let me know how it does after a few uses. I might have to look into that! It would really suck if it's better than the REN moisturizer though since it cost so much money! But if it continues to work, it'll save you some money in the long-run!
Beautiful palette, Rachel!
I just might have to get that for my wedding makeup! It looks really natural yet gorgeous.
It really is a nice palette! It's not very pigmented though. But I kind of like that because it's nice for daytime if you don't want to wear too much makeup. All of the colors have a nice bit of shimmer too!
Love the new pic!
Day 58
That zit on my left cheek played a dirty trick on me this morning. I woke up and it was actually flatter! And now it's the end of the day... It's a scab again. It's bigger. And it started oozing when I washed my face a few minutes ago. Why won't this thing just go away? I have a few tiny bumps directly underneath of it. I can't see them because they're flesh-colored, but I feel them.
Anyway. I'm so exhausted and the DirecTV/Viacom war has left me with no 90s Nickelodeon to watch, so I guess I might as well get some sleep. I just want to relive my childhood with some Kenan & Kel! *sigh*
Day 59
The tiny bumps are still lingering... I hope they don't become full-blown zits. The zit on my left cheek is still a scab. And there's still a nasty looking zit on my back.
Other than that... I can't believe tomorrow is day 60. It's oddly exciting to go see my derm since it signifies the end of another month on Accutane. Even more exciting to be entering month three, the "magical" month for many. Even though I'd say this stuff has been pretty magical already since it has basically cleared me since early in the course.

I hope those bumps just dry out and fall off! It would suck to get full blown zits! You have been doing so good since starting! Back zits ahhh they suck don't they? I can't say I miss getting those.
I hope that month 3 is the "magic month" for you! I hope for lots of fading and that damn cheek scab goes away! I have 2 in between my eyes that are just lingering. I go in on Monday to start a new month! Exciting stuff! That means one month closer to my old lips coming back!!
