Many users report that benzoyl peroxide use for acne increases scarring and produces lumpy bumps in their skin.
Benzoyl peroxide generates free radicals in the skin in a manner to similar to unprotected sun exposure. The redness of the skin (erythema), caused by sun exposure and benzoyl peroxide, is the result of free radicals acting upon the skin. This can slowly damage the skin's structure and cause premature aging of the skin.
Benzoyl peroxide slows the healing process. The red-brown marks that after acne outbreaks last longer when benzoyl peroxide is a part of the acne treatment.
Benzoyl peroxide is linked to cancer genesis and is considered a free radical-generating skin tumor promoting agent. Many published articles support a linkage between benzoyl peroxide and skin cancer.
In 1995 the FDA changed benzoyl peroxide from a Category I (safe) to a Category III (safety is uncertain) based on information that benzoyl peroxide was a tumor promoter in mice.
i don really think its the main concern here...
i believe that maybe it does have its side effect..but what things doesnt?
Its just don over use the product even if it is effective..there must be a line drawn towards how much to use and not over use it...
panadols cure pain...but try dosing many of it and it will kill you...isnt it the same logic?
skin cancer wise, there are many factors....some say exposure to sun would risk getting skin cancer..does that means, you move in darkness? and sunlight is a must for us to survive right? so is it good or bad?
Just don over expose to it will do....the same logic applies to everything
water has been shown to give mice cancer, in large amounts! lol seriously though, there is something to be said of quality of life! I would much rather deal with some small skin cancer spots for a few weeks and get them zapped off than to deal with uncontrolled acne the rest of my life. And its good for everyone to use sunscreen daily, and to get any weird moles or spots checked out by a doctor asap. As for the healing aspect, I find my acne heals much better when I use BP. As for free radicals, if you're concerned, use a moisturizer with antioxidants after the BP, like clinique's continuous rescue..
These concerns arise frequently on the message boards. I guess that's why Dan put them in the frequently asked questions.
