Ingrown Hairs On Groin Turning Into Cysts

Hi everyone, I hope I'm posting in the right area. If I'm not, if someone could please kindly redirect me...=) Here is my problem, in addition to facial, chest and back acne, I also get it on and around my groin. I shave my entire groin area, and my derm said that it was ingrown hairs and to change razors every single time I shave, because of the bacteria that gets trapped in the razor. She also said to shave "with" the grain, as opposed to against it. I haven't gotten a chance to try that yet, but I wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone else suffers from this and how they deal with it. It is incredibly embarrassing, as I now have scars all around my groin area. They're purplish and ugly. =*( I guess that brings up another question, how the heck do I get rid of scars in such a sensitive area?? God I hate acne. =(

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, I meant to reply to this way earlier. I had this happen to me on my armpit. Unfortunately, it turns out that I have hidradenitis suppurativa. You might want to check if you have this, it could have just been ingrown hairs gone mad...but that's what I thought in the first place too.

For the scarring, maybe try diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice? It will take time.

Thank you, that was very helpful. I'll ask my doctor about it when I see her. I actually got one on each armpit as well, so I'm guessing you're probably right. Thanks again!

I forgot to ask, what did you do for it? Did you take an antibiotic? Thanks!

Yeah, it sounds like you may have it. I did take the antibiotic doxycyline and I did warm compresses. Though, it didn't really help. The ones on my armpit hurt soooo bad that I had to get them lanced which definitely helped. If you have or get any large ones, I would recommend getting them lanced. I'm going on accutane soon. My derm said it could help with hidradenitis suppurativa.

Also, I read that hormonal treatments, like birth control and spiro, might help. If it gets really bad, you can get the glands surgically removed. Let me know if you have any more questions! I'm by far no expert but I have done a bit of research and I am going through it. It's a rather rare condition.

Thanks again for your reply...I'm surprised my doctor never mentioned this condition. She just said they were ingrown hairs and to change my razor every time I shave and to shave with the grain, not against it. She does want me to go on birth control pills though (I'm already on Spiro)...I've tried them in the past and the ones I was on most recently caused depression and WORSE acne!! Oh well, I'll give it another shot with a different bc pill.

When I had the cyst on my one armpit, it hurt SO bad and I had to squeeze it. =/ Now I have a cyst on the other armpit but it's not bad enough where it needs to be lanced. I really appreciate all your input, it was very helpful! =) And good luck with the Accutane! Your skin looks pretty clear though, do you have body acne?

Thank you!

You're welcome!

Maybe your doc is not aware of the condition? This could be true, especially if she is not a derm.

And yeah, finding the right bc pill can be like shooting in the dark. I wish you luck though. And thanks for the luck on the accutane! My most recent breakout was all along the jawline, so it doesn't show up. And, yes, I do have body acne on my chest and back. Acne feels like such a curse sometimes.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying...but my derm is from a very reputable hospital so I just think it's odd she never mentioned it. Because like you said, it really sounds like I have it. =/

I know, I'm scared to go on the Ocella (generic Yaz I believe) because of the bad side effects I've had in the past on bc pills. Thank you for wishing me luck! No problem, I really hope the Accutane helps you. I also have acne on my chest and back (BAD!), so I can relate. I'm sorry if I already mentioned that. Since I went off one of my medications, the acne on my face seems much better though, and the chest is still breaking out but not as bad. The back though, whoo, now that is bad. Very painful. Do you have scars on your chest and back? I have scars everywhere! It's hard in the warm weather cause I want to wear backless dresses and shirts and I can't. =( So yeah, I hear you, acne does feel like a curse sometimes!

Helloo this is hidradenitis obviously appears mostly with hairy people changing your diet helps by 50% but also finding the right drug is better I'm currently going to start next week for accutane
