Hi you guys.
I never thought I'd say this, but my programming team is almost caught up with stuff. So, do you guys have suggestions for improvements to current functionality or suggestions for new stuff you'd like to see on acne.org?
Think small or think big. I'd like to hear anything you have to say.
Since everyone is mostly on their phones or tablets now, I'd love there to be an Acne.org App.
Even without an App I'd love it even if the site was more mobile friendly. It would be awesome if going around the site would be easier, organized and sectioned of instead of one long scroll page when you navigate to the homepage.
Hi Dan,
How are the "trending" products in the product & treatment reviews section calculated? It's not clear.
For the acne myths section, you know I have some issues. Although the Diet & Acne "myth" has been updated with more information, I think it needs to have more sections/ factors included. Since you acknowledge in the myths section that (most) dermatologists are not expects when it comes to acne, it goes to say that noone knows everything about acne, hence we do not know enough about the diet-acne diet-stress etc connections. What is great about the Diet forum is that it allows users to test new theories that will never be funded by pharmaceutical companies (except when supplements begin to become regulated by the pharmaceutical industry, as it is happening in the EU/ UK). It would be great if you could add some research on the acne-histamines connection, as that is linked to chronic inflammation. A low histamine diet seems to be catching on on the forum and I truly believe it can help people who are frustrated with diet and topicals. I'm sure you are receptive to new solutions, so please give it a look.
And yes, an acne.org app would be great...with perhaps a daily calendar feature to keep track of acne flare ups & improvement.
Thank you for reading.
Hi -
Ok, thinking big - what about a breakout tracker? Something people could log into as part of their profile (that they could make public if they like) that functions in the same way as what people use in the their logs to track their progress. It could very easily be in the form of a survey they might fill out daily (theoretically) or with whatever consistency they decide that then populates to a table or a figure they can see from their profile. They could fill out the number of new/ active/ healing pimples, quality of skin rating on a number scale or maybe a sliding scale (oily <-> dry, red <-> blanch, etc. Then, this survey could populate the numbers to a graph or a figure of some kind, that provides a way to track improvements/worsening over time.
Again - maybe it can default to private and people can opt-in to ame public. It would be extremely useful for people trying/testing out new treatments AND VERY useful (in the case of people who make it public) for people who want to try out those new treatments but want to see how others are doing first.
Like I said, thinking big - but it would also make kind of a neat app.
Yes, that's what I meant too...a tracker or log. I use the Ladytimer app to track my cycle (including breakouts), and it has a list of things to check off to make it easy, and a day-by-day calendar to track progress.
Also, Dan, if you have some downtime (ha!), I'm waiting for you to develop a natural product line... along the lines of the Image Ormedics line but more affordable

The reviews section is our own algorithm. The trending section is based on products that have been reviewed a lot lately so people can see what people are talking about a lot lately.

Can you give me a link to where people are talking about this and also any links to science behind it? I'd love to look into it.

Interesting. I'll keep this in mind for a possible app addition if/when we do an app.

What do you think would go into a natural product that would actually clear someone 100%? I like all acne.org stuff to fulfill the promise of 100% clear skin.

Hi Dan,
First, for the natural product that would clear someone 100%, there is no guarantee. I would say the guarantee would be to balance skin PH 100% since it would not destroy the skin's natural acid mantle. Balanced PH is still a good marketing approach.
Anyway, a cleanser / product alone should not be expected to clear someone 100%...I know it's a better sales pitch to use 100%, but unless the acne's cause is surface-deep, then the cure won't fully come from a product, it should come from a more holistic approach (as in, whole-istic, for those who have an aversion to the word). Perhaps individualized consultations would help, but I'm sure that would be very time-consuming and would require more support/staff to carry this off. In any case, if you do decide to venture into more natural products, I would love it if you keep us updated on how it's going and ask for feedback. You do have a wide range of users for market research...just check the lifestyle forum
For more practical advice, though, for "natural" prototype I would look at Image Ormedics & also the European brand bioclin. Notice that there products are not completely natural, but last for a long time and do not contain the most common skin irritants, such as SLS.
About histamines, these are some of the threads on acne.org...Skin problems are listed as a symptom of histamine intolerance, and I personally had my acne checked by an allergist (on top of numerous dermatologists, estheticians etc) who identified my red flare-ups as welt-like acne (which I see similar on users' photos, often identified as cystic) that was actually an allergic reaction. My blood tests showed high histamines, and the rest is history lol.
& most recent one:
For research, journalist Yasmina of thelowhistaminechef.com / The Low Histamine Chef has done extensive research on the role of histamine intolerance/ mast cell activation syndrome that you can find on her website.
Also, nutritionist advice: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/histamine-intolerance-fermented-foods-acne/
Interesting stuff WishClean. I am allergic to everything under the sun it seems like, especially Western evergreen trees. Why, oh why did I move to California?
I'll take a look at those threads.
I actually started reading up on histamines when I went to an allergist a couple of years ago, during one of my worst flare ups. She said my face was "reactive", and the high histamine levels in my blood indicated histamine intolerance. That's when I figured out that, at least some of my acne (the non-cystic/ red swollen welt-like bumps) were not typical acne.
The low histamine chef said her acne disappeared when she got her histamine levels under control....this won't be everyone's cause for the acne, but for some at least it can help make flare ups more manageable.
Ahh, I used to live in good ol' Florida...very close to the swamps. Needless to say, my allergies were at their worst back then.
Hi, I have a couple ideas I'd love to see
1. For the kit section, instead of only having the regular size kit, include another with all the 16oz size products - easier + faster ordering. Maybe also include kit version with all 4 products in both sizes?
2. Make the moisturizer with sunscreen! Especially since the AHA has that sun exposure warning, but there's no sunscreen on the site. Plus, I personally prefer moisturizers with sunscreen rather than putting both of them on separately - it feels like too much.
I also would like to see antioxidants and good skin stuff in there, (but I think that would bring the price up too much so maybe not?) I love the Beautypedia site to find out about which products are good for my skin and for every decently priced sunscreen and moisturizer they always say there's no/too little antioxidants.
3. Introduce new BHA product! AHA is great, but I've read from many sources online that BHA is great or even better at AHA for exfoliating.
Thanks for reading!
A section for compiling and comparing scientific trials/journals that are relevant to the nature of this website. I'm sure having a established thread of helpful terminology to better comprehend the studies wouldn't hurt either.
This place needs a foundation that caters towards validations and reducing the instances with pseudo-nonsensical reiterations of even more illogically inept sources that people find about acne. There is a lot of crap that can be found about methodical approaches to treatment and what does and doesn't work.
Hello! Thank you for all you do in helping us clear our skin!
I was thinking, because the video explaining how to use Glycolic Acid 10% tells us to wear sunscreen, and most sunscreens break most acne-sufferers out, if it would be possible to (someday) formulate a sunscreen that (does its best) to not clog pores and break out the skin.
Thanks <3
I just read a lot of the post and some people were mentioning a breakout tracker. I think in-line with those people who start using The Regimen, it would be cool to have a Regimen Tracker. It basically shows you how much product to use when you begin and how it increments when you go throughout the next couple of weeks. And, if they are using Acne.org products, it could also remind them when they should get more product so they don't run out.
I think it would be better if the success stories would feature the latest submitted stories instead of going over the old ones before reaching the new ones or at least have the option of jumping over to the latest stories.
Studies have been done that show a BP wash that is rinsed off does reduce the amount of acne bacteria. Washes would also be easier for body acne where you don't want to have it in constant contact with your clothing. Also, Dan was asking for suggestions so no need to be so aggressive buddy.
I kind of love it the way it is. I love that there's no advertising and that whenever people try to sneak in touting an expensive 'miracle cure' that they are obv selling it gets removed quickly.
The only glitch I've noticed is when I'm on my phone I can't press the forum button. For some reason it goes straight to the store every time.
Now I just type 'acne.org forum' into the browser, and it opens up. So it's really not a big deal.
Also, I cannot delete any of my own content. Maybe I just haven't figured it out? Sometimes I post stuff then change my mind later after more experience...

lol
Could there be a way to submit new products to be listed in the review section?
I can't use anything with harsh acne medication in it because it makes my skin go crazy. I've just recently found a cream that I'm getting really promising results with and after I've tested it long enough and all goes well, I'd love to write a review for it.
It's not in the review section and I could find anyway to add it when I'm ready if that's possible.
