I'm currently using the acne.org regimen for 4 weeks now and my skin is clear. I wanted to know if I can start using the benzoyl peroxide once a day at night.

Hi Apay001,

If you no longer have any active acne, you may add or change one variable at a time to The Regimen and see if you will remain clear. Thank you.

Itchy skin implies you have fungal acne NOT ordinary acne. Apply topical clotrimazole antifungal cream (available without prescription) to the affected areas of your skin 2-3 times a day, and see how you go.

I would stop using the benzoyl peroxide as it will only irritate your skin, and it is not effective against fungus. .

Thanks, Aussie Scientist the itchiness has stopped but no significant improvement. I have used topical antifungal creams in the past and it clears up whatever rash or reaction I have on my face but doesn't cure acne.

You need to apply the correct antifungal cream for the type of fungus/fungal acne that you have to control fungal acne. If the antifungal cream worked toa point, then you have fungal acne NOT ordinary acne and treatments for ordinary "sacne" will make your condition worse.

I can provide advice on the correct antifungal cream to use for your condition if you get back to me with answer to the following questions.

Have you taken antibiotics ? If so, which ones ? Do you have one or more of the following - dandruff, a white tongue flaking skin, itchy red rashes.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE AREAS WITH THE "ACNE" VERY DRY - DO NOT APPLY ANY ORGANIC OILS OR MOISTURISERS TO THE AREAS WITH "ACNE" - ORGANIC OILS FEED ONE OF THE TYPES OF FUNGUS THAT CAUSES FUNGAL ACNE AND ALL FUNGUS LOVES MOISTURE

Yes, I took Doxycycline last year as prescribed by my dermatologist but I got tired of it coz the regimen she placed me on made my acne the worse I had ever seen, so I basically stopped anything from the derm.

What helped manage acne for me so far before I started acne.org, a regimen which involves double cleansing, salicylic acid and epiderm cream (antifungal/anti-inflammatory cream.) but it doesn't stop breakouts?

I also used spironolactone for two weeks and saw changes don't even know why I stopped that as well.

Thanks. I would say that you definitely have fungal acne caused by taking the doxycycline. Epiderm cream is not antifungal, but it does not contain any organic oil, so it should not make the problem worse.

I would not use salicylic acid (except as a spot treatment) because it will break down your skin barrier and help the fungus to invade.

Do the following to treat your problem - apply clotrimazole cream mixed with terbenafine cream (often sold as Lamisil) - if you can get terbenafine cream without prescription - 2-3 times a day. You will probably need to use antifungal creams topically for a very long time, because once the fungus takes hold (caused by the immune system being compromised from taking antibiotics) it is very hard to get rid of the fungus.

So keep using the antifungal cream/s.

Also wash your hair in an antidandruff shampoo. And keep your skin very dry.

See how you go after a couple of weeks.....
