I've done a ton of research on acne, from my understanding acne is caused when oil (sebum, hair products, cooking, etc) mixes with dead skin cells to create a gluey plug in the pore (comedones). There are many ways to fight acne, from reducing sebum to reducing dead skin cells (exfoliating). However, I have not found any research on actually unclogging pores (I don't think it's actually possible, or else after a treatment, a bunch of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria would be draining out of your face?).
Benzoyl peroxide supposedly penetrates the skin and kills (oxygenates) the P. Acne bacteria that feeds on the trapped sebum (within the pore), how then does it bypass the gluey plug of the pore? Does it just seep through it somehow? If it broke the plug, then wouldn't a bunch of stuff just come out of your face. Is there any way to unclog your pores, perhaps if there were a highly magnified needle that broke the plug, but from my understanding no active ingredients can chemically break the plug. That is why you can't treat acne that's already formed, you can only kill P. Acne within non-plugged pores (otherthan benzoyl peroxide providing someanti-inflammation of clogged pores).
I also have heard of Benzoyl Peroxide Microspheres, which are apparently less harsh, is this true? Has acne.org done any research on it, or is it just a gimmick?

Hi timelton45,
Thank you for contacting us.
According to Dan,Benzoyl peroxide brings oxygen down into the skin, where it kills bacteria.
Any topical treatment must penetrate through the stratum corneum, either through the cells of the stratum corner (corneocytes) or around the cells. Its not a matter of having an opening. Rather, medications penetrate through the cells of the skin.
As far as unclogging a plug, benzoyl peroxide, in addition to bringing oxygen into the skin and killing bacteria, is comedoytic. This means it can help unclog pores and prevent pores from becoming clogged. Nothing does this immediately, so thats why you cant put on any medication and then all of the sudden all of your pores release their contents to the surface. This is a slow process.
