I am a 41-year-old female adult with moderate acne who lives in an area that is hot and humid in the summer. I haven't yet started using Acne.org's Regimen as I just found out about it yesterday and am currently on Proactiv. In fact, I use Proactiv's Extra-Strength formula in the summer to control acne, which includes a 7% benzoyl-peroxide cleanser, a 2% salicylic-acid toner, and a 7% benzoyl-peroxide lotion. (During the cooler months, I use their regular strength kit, which is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and no salicylic acid in the toner.) In addition, I've been using a 4% benzoyl-peroxide prescription cleanser on my neck/chest/shoulders once a day in the shower, which actually isn't helping much.
My question is about transitioning to Acne.org's Regimen and products. The Regimen instructions seem to be geared to people who are either new or sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. I'm coming from the opposite end. I seem to require harsher and harsher formulas to control acne, and I'd like to gradually reverse that trend. My personalized advice results said I should be using a gentle cleanser, a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide lotion, and a moisturizer along with 10% glycolic acid. Being that I'm not sensitive to benzoyl peroxide, and seem to require a lot of it in the warmer months, does anyone have recommendations as to how to transition to this very gentle (in comparison) Regimen without having flare-ups?
I should add that a few years ago, I tried to go off Proactiv by switching to health-food-store brands as well as trying Proactiv's Gentle formula, and this resulted in severe cystic acne that left scars. I don't want that to happen again, but I also don't want to be stuck with ever-harsher products. So, my interest here is in being realistic about my skin apparently requiring strong, effective products... but reversing this trend of needing more and more benzoyl peroxide.
Thanks for any advice.
