Hey all
I just started treating myself with the the regime and i am using these products, cetaphil cleanser, Dr songs BP, simple light moisturiser and a simple nivea moisturiser which is much thicker ...
I just started on saturday and i used a pea sized amount on my face of the BP to start and went to bed.. woke up sunday not much changed at which was fine and i applied the same again yesterday night and i woke up this morning redder than a baboon's arse my face is bumpy and raw so i washed my face and moisturised it ( no BP yet ) i am still red raw at the moment and i am slightly puffy around my left eye too. I've only been applying the BP at night so far but is this too harsh for my skin to use at all or is this normal ?
Is this the hardening effect ?
I feel like i look worse off than i actually am as while i feel my face is constantly tingling its not painful...
Not really sure what to do now should i stop or continue with it?
i've attached a picture so anyone with experience can assess it.
It's hard to say if it's just the BP that's irritating you, or if it's the ingredients of the moisturizers on top of the BP. Everything I put on my face after BP, or AHA/BHA, burns like fire. Moisturizers, unless it's hyaluronic acid, are mostly nasty things like preservatives and emulsifiers and they burn like fire hitting your freshly medicated skin-- which yours brands are, see links below.
http://www.acne.org/regimen warns the BP will irritate you til your skin gets stronger. If by hardening you mean the layer of dry, dead skin that can come from overusing BP, that takes a while.
BP is super sensitizing in the beginning so you don't want to start layering on products on top of it. The purpose of BP is to deliver oxygen to your pores, so why put waxy, potentially irritating crud on top of that? But most importantly- I don't see your acne!
1) If you don't have acne on your entire face, don't put BP on your entire face. Just dab a thin layer on and immediately around your active blemishes.
2) Quit the Simple Light and the Nivea!!! They both rate high on the irritants/allergy scale

Cool thanks for the reply, i've used both these products before and never had an issue with them but do you think it's because i am using the BP with them thats making the irritation. I checked the simple product against dans list of no no ingredients and it seamed to pass that but i've never been on that site you linked. I guess there is more going on in the "simple" stuff then they make out to be..
I'll stop using them both, for the time being the only thing i got at the moment that i could use is coconut oil which was rated 0 on that site.. i'll use that for the time being till i can get a gentle replacement. ( any suggestions ?)
I think its due to the moisturiser as it's been tingling all day and i've not put BP on it for also most 24 hours..
my nose around my mouth and my chin are my problem areas so i'll stick to there from now on. im glad you can't see much acne lol but i had about 6 whiteheads this morning and i get those deep swelling kind around my nose. have done for about 10 years or so.
Thanks for your advice turnover
Well I'm allergic to bp and ended up in hospital my face seemed like yours if not even worst you couldn't even recognize me.id say drop the bp and don't use it again! As for moisturizers find gentle non comedogenic non fragrant and with no alcohol I hear think gentle if a cleanser burns your eyes that's a bad sigh if a moisturizers stings or feels drying trow em out!
Looks like an allergic reaction
You actually should go in to your clinic because I literally had like a bad burn from my acne medication so they gave me a steroid told me to buy sunscreen like eucerin and either they gave me an ibuprofen or an allergy pill I don't remember go in please and good luck!
You're very welcome. Yes, BP is making you sensitized to something that normally wouldn't be penetrating that deep. Most people don't need moisturizer (moisture, yes, like hyaluronic acid, but not stuff that sits on top of your skin.)
Coconut oil is iffy to use every day because it can be comedogenic, but if you're burning, it can soothe once every now and again (again, try to only keep it on the irritated spots.)
Also, put the BP on first, let it absorb, then apply moisturizer if needed. (Moisturizer is a protective barrier.) If you have oily skin and your acne isn't dry, don't bother with moisturizer. If you're drinking lots of water and taking your Omega 3 & 6 supplements, your skin will be covered on the moisture front.
If you absolutely need moisturizer, hyaluronic acid is the best (it's present already in your skin, buy on ebay, amazon.)
Also, you might want to read this: *URL Removed, see board rules; http://www.acne.org/board-rules.html Acne.org Moderator Team* If this sounds like you, discontinue the use of Regimen/BP. If you were breaking out while using Simple/Nivea moisturizers before the BP, they could be the culprit. Sulfur soap is going to be the best face wash for you- NO MOISTURE.
p.s. I've never used the Regimen, but it appears to come with a moisturizer. How is it?
That seems like an extreme reaction to only two days worth of a small amount of BP. It really appears like you're allergic to BP and I would advise that you stop using it
When I first used BP, I had the same reaction to it- insane burning, redness like a horrible sunburn from the bridge of my nose down the rest of my face. I just thought it was normal and kept using it and now I'm at 5 weeks of being on the Regimen and it only tingles on my skin now. People thought I was allergic too, but it turned out my skin needed time to get used to it. I would patch test yourself with the BP on your arm and see the reaction you get from it- the skin on your face is gentle and easily irritated while your arm is a bit tougher. If it does the same thing on your arm, it's safe to say you shouldn't use it.
Unfortunately it turns out i am allergic to it, i left it a day took everything off my skin with water and left it and really it just burned my face too much anyway by the next morning it was a disaster and my face had tripled in size so off i went to the emergency room... It was really no mystery to them it just the BP and i am allergic to it and i guess it's not for me.
They tapped my vein in my forearm which i've never had done but it was fine they took a few vials of blood and shot me up with some steroids and gave me an antihistamine... couple of hours passed and not much happened but the heat off my face was coming down so they gave me another steroid shot and sent me home with a weeks supply of steroids and antihistamines... It's been a sucky week for sure but the silver lining is my face is back to normal size and i don't have a single spot lol.
Needless to say i think that won't last but i talked to the doctor who also told me he had acne and there are better ways at dealing with it certain antibiotics which would save my sensitive skin..
So bonus points go to 13goingon30 for guessing a trip to the hospital got to laugh at these things right.
So if you want to see a picture of how my face looked when i arrived at the hospital i'll post it if you really want, but im doing you a favor and being kind and saving you from that mess haha.
Also thanks for everyones advice it was all good advice...
Yea it sucks to be allergic because I hear it is really effective at clearing skin. I just use salicidic and that does ok.i had completely stopped my acne medications and my skin looked better less red, it seems that my body is doing its own work so yey to that on the other hand I drank last nite and got 2 pimples by mouth:/ ruined my skin that looked great flawless last nite:(
Would i really need to use sun protection seen as i only used a little BP, i guess it's not going to hurt me but i am curious what kind of time period would someone need to use sun protection once they come off using BP?
Also thats for the advice and pointer on the eucerin
Yes always use SPF as it is necessary and good for you I hear it even repairs past damage but I'm not so sure? I know it gets rid of hyperpigmentation they suggest to reapply like every 2 to 3 hours but that's too excessive for me..lol.
Just one annoying thing about SPF you gotta work it in your skin
Yikes! Glad you took yourself off to emergency!
I use SPF most days in winter and every day in summer but I live in Australia so a hot/sunny climate (even in winter). SPF is really dependent on climate and also your movements. If you're out in the day then wear it, if you're inside mostly then its probably not necessary.
As for needing it when using BP, its recommended as it sensitises your skin, but as for you, I would wear it over the next few weeks if you're going to be outside in the sun but otherwise you can leave it to your own discretion.
I hope your allergic reaction is quick to heal...i can't imagine how scary that must have been
