Finally Starting The Regimen

Hi everyone,

So I've finally decided to give the regimen a shot. This is my last straw. I have tried OTC treatments (neutrogena, OXY, proactiv, etc), natural remedies (ACV, honey, etc), oral prescriptions (minocycline) and topical prescriptions (retin-a, differing, clindamycin, clindoxyl) - if this doesn't work, I will be going on Accutane. I have been struggling with acne since I was 12 years old and I will be graduating university in June¦ far, far too long (which probed me to order Dan's BP - I really want clear skin for my graduation!!) My acne is hormonal - I usually have 3-5 PAINFUL nodules at a time before or during my cycle, which take weeks to leave. I very rarely breakout with non-inflammatory acne. This will be my regimen log, so I can document any progress I experience.

One question I have is:

Would I be able to use Retin-A at night, and BP during mornings? The Retin-A is beneficial for anti-aging and helps fade away my scars, so I would like to keep using it if possible.

Thanks in advance, and wish me luck :)

You can always switch out your Retin-A for AHA. I find Retin-A a little harsh on the skin anyway. Dan has an AHA and teaches you how to incorporate it into the regimen so you can do BP twice a day and use AHA at the same time. AHA helps remove hyperpigmentation and is anti-aging.

Thank you. I think I'll do that. At what week should we introduce AHA into the regimen? And how should it be used (on top of the BP at night, before applying BP at night, etc)?

Note (just for the record, for myself and for others contemplating on testing the regimen): ACNE BEFORE THE REGIMEN

I had 3 nodules on my face before using the regimen (I'm now on day 3), at this point I've had 2 new nodules occur and 2 smaller spots. HOWEVER, 2 of the original nodules came to a head within these 3 days (which NEVER happens!! They never form a head and take weeks to leave usually!) so I'll take this as a positive thing Not experiencing any dryness, just slight redness - but my skin is used to BP as I used clindoxyl gel for years (10% BP & 5% clindamycin)

I'll make weekly updates with pictures just to make note of any progress.

They say to start using AHA a month after the regimen, but I think that's because your skin still needs time to adjust to the amount of BP used in the DKR. Even if you've used BP before, the thing about the regimen is the sheer amount that you have to use, and that takes a lot of time for your skin to get used to. I would say wait a few weeks before adding AHA. But, if you've used loads of BP on your face before and you think your skin will be ok, you can add a little bit of AHA to your moisturiser to start.

I myself am not on the regimen, but I use AHA like it's a moisturiser on my entire face at night. When that's dry I use BP for spot treatment; You can also wait until the BP is dry and then put it on but BP takes forever to dry and my way works just as well for me.

Week 1 update

So I've successfully got through week 1 of the regimen! Woohoo! My skin has JUST become slightly dry the last day or 2, whereas the first few days I didn't feel any dryness at all. Think I'll introduce jojoba oil soon since I'll be upping my dose of BP tomorrow morning. At this point, I've gotten a few non-inflammatory zits which I mentioned I never ever get. So I guess this is my skin "purging". On the bright side, these zits leave rather quickly, in about a day. I got a few nodules/cysts as well - 2 of which are VERY painful (the one on my forehead near my hairline and the one on my temple which was FINE until I tried to pop it an hour ago. Idiot!!!) Both are extremely swollen. Anyone know what I can do to make these go away/less painful?? The BP kind of just sits on top of the skin and doesn't penetrate these 2. The skin around them becomes flaky but the bump itself remains unaffected. The two nodules in the middle of my forehead are flattening out, but I popped these 2 a few days ago ¦ go figure. The rest of my face looks decent, I guess. My hyperpigmentation is actually fading, which is odd, because I've seen people on the boards complain about how their red marks linger for a longer time with the use of BP. I guess we'll see what happens in the upcoming weeks.

Week 2 update

So far so good! I popped both of the nodules that were bugging me last week (the huge one on my forehead, and the one on my temple), and got all the gunk out (or most of it, at least).. Not experiencing much dryness at all, only after I cleanse my face. The BP is quite moisturizing actually¦ and my handy cerave moisturizer is doing a good job in avoiding dryness/flakiness. It's just hard to rub it in as there's so much BP on my face, that it starts to get tacky when it comes into contact with my moisturizer. I just keep rubbing it in, it takes quite some time though. I am now using a full finger's length morning and night time for my 3rd week. I have a few non-inflammatory zits on my chin (like 3 active ones), but they don't bother me. I can deal with these, but the cysts/nodules, I CANNOT. the BP is still fading away hyperpigmentation, and I also have NO blackheads on my nose!! for the first time in 10 YEARS!!! NONE. that's crazy. Anyways, will update you guys next week !

Week 3 update

Hi everyone! This regimen is working so well on my acne.. although I know it's probably hard to tell due to all the hyperpigmentation on my face, I literally have NO acne on my face right now. NONE!!! My face is completely smooth to touch.. and so easy to cover up the red marks with makeup. Dare I say, my skin actually looks FLAWLESS with makeup on (you'd never guess I had acne!)¦ can't wait for these marks to fade! The cerave is still doing an awesome job keeping my skin moist so the makeup isn't flaky really at all, unless I don't take my time rubbing it in! I've been using a full finger's length of BP morning and night and my skin just absorbs it without feeling dried out at all, really (only after I cleanse). I'm so excited to see what happens in the following weeks.. specially the dreadful week of my cycle *fingers crossed*!!! Also thinking about purchasing some AHA. What say you, readers? 'Till next week!

Week 5 update

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been active last week, I've been so busy with school and work, I haven't had the time to relax and log on. Anyways.. last week was the week prior to my cycle, so I broke out with ONE painful nodule on my forehead (which I, of course, picked at.. and made it scab over, as you'll see in the photo).. well hey! It's much better than last month's, when I broke out with like 3-4 painful nodules! So I'm still happy :). my cheeks and chin have been surprisingly calm *knock on wood*.. experiencing a bit more flakiness, although I'm still using the same amount of BP, one finger length morning and night. It's more of an annoyance more than anything, since my cerave moisturizer takes care of 99% of it quite easily, I just hate how long it takes to rub it in¦ better than having flakes though, right? I will be ordering a second bottle of BP, and will order a bottle of AHA while I'm at it so that it'll be ready to use soon :)

Week 7 update

Hi everyone! Just an update, the regimen is still going well. I used jojoba oil with my moisturizer last week to help deal with the flakiness and it lead to like 3-4 non-inflammatory breakouts (hence the new hyperpigmentation), so I discontinued use. I'd rather deal with dryness than new breakouts. Besides that, everything's going well. My bottle of AHA and second bottle of BP should be arriving tomorrow, so I'll mix a bit of AHA with my moisturizer at night about twice a week to help fade away some scars. Overall, I'm really happy with the progress my skin has made in comparison to the first photos I had posted¦ My hopes are high that my skin will be clear in 2-3 months so I can enjoy my summer without acne for the first time in a decade! :)

Week 11 update

Hi everyone, just an update. I've been mixing equal parts of AHA and my cerave moisturizer and using it every night, it really helps a lot with the dryness ad makes my skin feel so soft. However, I encountered a problem, I think I used too much too quickly as my right cheek broke out a bit (gone now) and that same area got soooo dry and itchy¦ I had to rub jojoba oil onto my dry patches for 2 minutes every night before cleansing, and like 3 days later my skin was back to normal. So no problem! Also, I broke out last week with a big nodule on my forehead as it was the week of my cycle (the most recent hyper pigmentation spot near my hairline) - it wasn't a NEW spot, it had just resurfaced since I did not manage to get any of the gunk out of it before. But I did this time, don't think it'll be resurfacing again! :) Besides that, I still occasionally have been breaking out on my jawline with smaller, regular zits that aren't painful.. but I don't really mind. I've seen immense progress up to this point. Until next time everyone!

Week 14

I broke out last week a little bit because it was the week of my period, but they weren't painful huge nodules like usual. About 3 or so regular zits, that went away within like 3 days¦. And no scarring (or minimal) left behind. I'm no longer experiencing ANY dryness at all. My face feels smooth and soft to touch, and I've switched to a lighter foundation just to cover my scarring. I could honestly kiss Dan how happy I am!!!! Thank you so much! My skin will look beautiful in the professional photos at a wedding I have to go to next week, and I hope all of my scars will be gone before my graduation next month. I'm so happy!

Don't give up hope! I never thought that this would work for me. I truly thought I would be on accutane as we speak after another failed trial. I still get 2-3 hormonal zits a month, but they're just regular, bearable zits, no inflammation, no pain.. nothing like what my breakouts looked like in the first picture I posted. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Week 22

I am not a happy camper. I started using jojoba oil on my skin 2 weeks ago and my skin has broken out once again, right before I go away on vacation. I fucking hate acne, it truly rules my life and makes me so miserable and angry. I now have a huge cyst on my forehead, one on my chin, and 3 small zits, with lots of hyperpigmentation. Just wonderful! One step forward, 10 steps back. My skin was doing SO well before this fucking jojoba oil. If anyone is reading this, I HIGHLY recommend NOT using jojoba oil mixed with your moisturizer, or at least try using a very very small amount for a few days to see how your skin reacts. It took 2 weeks for my skin to react and break out like this. Let's hope my skin can calm down a little bit before my trip, or I will be very very upset.

I just wan't to say that your skin is looking AMAZING! And I'm sorry about your recent breakout...but, at least you know what caused it! That is a good thing! It would be awful to have that happen out of no where for no reason. Glad to hear that the regimen is working for you. I am now just going on week three so I hope to see as good as results as you! I decided to never try the jojoba oil as well....I'd rather just deal with the flaky skin, which for me isn't that bad.

Your skin looks amazing! I'm glad the DKR worked out so well for you! :) Wasn't the same story for me, haha, but at least I found something else! I used jojoba oil too, when my skin got really dry. While it helped with the dryness, it broke me out a LOT too, plus it made my face yellow. I'm Asian so I already have yellow undertones so I just looked SUPER YELLOW. I used Pond's cold cream when I get super dry in the winter now. It doesn't break me out and it's really moisturising!

Thank you! It's nice to see that this thread is helping some people out there . That's the whole reason why I started taking photos every few weeks. How's the regimen working for you?

What did you find that worked for you if you don't mind me asking?? And the Pond's sounds great, I've seen it around and always eye it but my cerave has been working great! Maybe I'll buy it for whenever I feel like switching it up haha

Week 27

Hello friends! I just got back from a month long vacation in Europe, which was absolutely amazing.. and surprisingly, my skin cleared up dramatically while I was away (am I the only one this happens to?). I don't know if it's something in the water or what, but the moment I washed my face I felt like the water was much more.. soft/gentle on my skin, in comparison to North America. I even skipped 2 uses of the regimen and never broke out!!! The one zit on my cheekbone I developed right when I got back home - go figure. But the rest of my face is nice and smooth¦ Hmmm wonder what it is in Europe that helped my skin so much. Any ideas? Anyways, I've been using the regimen as usual, no changes at all.

Thanks for posting updates, UKdreamin! You've made great progress :)

I was on a study abroad in Switzerland for 5 months, and while my skin wasn't clear while I was there, it was manageable. When I got back home, I broke out like crazy! So there is definitely something about travel that seems to irritate the skin.

I have hormonal acne so Diane 35 (BCP) is the only thing that has worked for me. And then I use AHA cream + clindoxyl gel to get rid of small bumps and maintain the tone of my skin. 🙂 I wish the regimen would've worked though, I'd much rather be on that as opposed to taking synthetic hormones but ah well. If your skin ever gets really dry you should give Ponds a go, but I wouldn't use it on a daily basis. It would seem excessive to use it so much 'cause it's so moisturising, if that makes sense. It's my back up for really bad winter days :p

Week 34

Hi everyone! Still loving the regimen. I rarely break out anymore, and if I do, it's 1 or 2 pimples that are easily covered with makeup. I actually get complimented on my skin now! With makeup on, my skin looks flawless. I even recently got a job in my field as a new graduate. I could look my interviewer in the eye without feeling embarrassed, allowing me to speak confidently.. I even got offered 10k more than what I had asked for! Thank you Dan, you have seriously changed my life for the better.
