I'm much older than most of the people on this site. I'm 47. My skin was great through adolescence; I didn't use anything on it and I never had pimples. I didn't start breaking out until I was in my 30's. Oh, joy! Wrinkles and pimples! I came across Dan's website after my acne returned after a round of Accutane had cured it for a year. I didn't want to go back on Accutane, so I tried the Regimen. Everything that Dan said would happen, happened; the dry, red, skin, the discomfort...and the clearing! For around 2 years I was blissfully clear, and now I'm here to tell you that if you think you're ready to go off it, proceed carefully.
About 3 months ago I decided it was time to stop all this BP and start using fancy anti-aging potions. I canned the Regimen and started using a high end Retinol serum, a BHA gel, and a fancy moisturizer. I thought at my age I should be using these adult beauty potions rather than BP. Well, my mistake! I stared breaking out in a few large deep pimples right back in the same locations I always had in the past. Right in time for Christmas!
I'm happy to say that my skin is bouncing back fairly quickly. I'm back on the Regimen again, and things are drying out and no new zits are forming. I've never had terribly oily skin, so I've made a few alterations to the Regimen. My skin responds favorable to one big pump of BP, not two, so that's what I use every morning and every night. In the morning my skin is quite dry with lots of flakes. When I get in the shower, I wash my face with Dan's cleanser and let the water absorb into the flakes of dry skin. Then I very gently massage my face with the tips of my figures until I can feel the dry skin flakes clump up and move around under my fingers. I do this for about a minute and get all the flakes off this way. After my shower, I let my face dry and apply the 1 pump of BP. When it's time to apply the moisturizer, in the morning I use 1/2 pump of lotion and 1/2 pump of Dan's recommended Neutragena sun screen. I squeeze that into my palm and then add 5 drops of jojoba oil and 1 drop of pure vegetable glycerin (a humectant) and massage that into my face. At night I do the same thing without the flake removal and without the sun screen.
I'm going to continue doing this until I'm 55 and then check my skin again. For me, as long as I moisturize, I do not find that the BP regimen prematurely ages my skin. I have people telling me that I look younger than my two sisters who are both younger than I am. The reason I started the "anti-aging" non-BP regimen was for melasma, spots of pigmentation that appeared when I was pregnant. I now realize that I would rather have no zits and some brown spots than zits and no brown spots. I just thought I'd write this in case there were any other people out there in the 40+ age range.
Yes - I find that Dan's regimen keeps my blackheads to a minimum and also helps with sebaceous filaments (which many people think are blackheads) on the nose. Maybe the drying power of the BP helps with overall congestion? Just to reiterate, I'm totally OCD about moisturizing and sunscreen...I even carry a little travel bottle of Dan's moisturizer with me during the day in case I'm feeling dried out, which tends to happen in my smile creases and around my eyes. Other than a little dryness, I notice no extra wrinkling - even during the winter in New England. And believe me, I'm on the lookout for wrinkles! If I find anything else to add to the routine that is beneficial for aging (cough cough) skin, I'll update. Keep the faith! )
