Hey guys! So today I just reached my 14th day on The Regimen!
Unfortunately, this is usually how long I spend on every regimen before I decide to quit if I don't see results. And, I don't really. My skin cleared last week and it was incredible, but now it's broken out again and it's extremely red. It's also itchy, which wasn't happening before. I feel like the BP is causing all of this redness, and the moisturizer helps somewhat, but not completely. It's pretty discouraging. I bump up the BP about 1/2 section of a finger every week, so that by one month I'll be using the full amount and be ready to use AHA as well. I've been waiting on jojoba oil, which should get here in a few days.
I'm just wondering if these symptoms are normal for 2 weeks in. The quality of my face is appallingly bad, for what I'm used to. I feel like I don't have real skin, just some red, dry, mutated bumpy thing. I long for smooth skin
Does anyone have thoughts on this progress so far? I don't want my skin to get worse! Is it just getting worse before it gets better?
Note: There are pics of my progress in my gallery.
What you mentioned is completely normal. Your skin is adjusting to the BP, and with this comes redness, itchiness and uneven skin tone. Once your skin starts adjusting to the BP things will settle down, usually after about 4-5 weeks (this is a rough approximation). Once you get your jojoba oil, this will help with flakiness and irritation. I wouldn't start AHA until things start settling down though however. Just remember to be extremely gentle and persistent. All the best.
Hi,
These symptoms seem normal to me. Red, dry, mutated skin is just something temporary. You've got to be patient, even if it's hard to deal with the reflect on the miror (trust me, I know what it is).
The Regimen is a long term job. And I'm sure jojoba oil will make things improve! Until you get it, do you use a moisturizer to calm the iritation?

Good point. Yes, it's pretty hard. I'm also doing my best to abstain from wearing makeup on my face, but I might have to cave soon. Would that be detrimental to my progress, do you think? What did you do?
I actually just received notice that my jojoba oil is in! Thank goodness! But yes, I've been moisturizing when needed to calm irritation. My skin isn't as dry today because I've been making sure to use two full pumps, even though it seems like a lot.
The jojoba oil will come to the rescue! I'm not on the regimen, but I use jojoba oil and it really calms down any redness and inflammation I have during a breakout.
Just keep it up and you will see results. I never did the regimen long enough to adjust, which I really regret.

Oh great! Glad to hear that I'm really excited about this wondrous jojoba everyone is speaking of.

I do not think makeup would be detrimental to your progress (if it's non comedogenic), especially if it makes you feel better. But the problem, I guess, is the dryness: how can successfully apply foundation cream on a skin that is so irritated that peel like hell and need to be soothe?
By the way, have not you think about using a moisturizer, and then, above it, face powder, you know, to make your skin look less red and more homogene?

Well I have an oil-free tinted moisturizer SPF 20 from Laura Mercier, which works well but I think will blend even better if I add the jojoba oil to it. The problem is, I don't really believe that any makeup is non-comedogenic. I've researched almost every brand of makeup and they all have at least one comedogenic ingredient in them.
Do you mean powder makeup? I'm trying to stay away from powders because they usually contain bismuth oxychloride and mica. They also tend to accentuate the bumps on my face.
Yes, I meant powder makeup.
Ok, but I have to confess I haven't thought about reasearching comedogenic ingredients and the accentuation of your bumps.
To be honest, when pimples have fun on my face, celebrating their power, I do not use makeup. I apply some adhesive dressings on the popped pimples. It looks ugly, but when people stare at me and ask "what have you done on your face? Have you hurt", at least, I can say: "I fight with a bear, dude, deal with it".
Yeaah, a tinted moisturizer could be the solution! Added to jojoba oil, which will calm your skin, and BP, that will clear it, the combinaison should approve the quality of your face.
But, I advice you not to over use BP: if your skin is really dry and red, make a break and use jojoba oil. Because, like Dan says: "Irritation = acne".
You'll get through it, we've all been there before. Hang in there for the light at the end of the tunnel.
As for makeup, I found it really tough to wear makeup in the early weeks when my face was so red and dry, but when I did have to wear it (if I was seeing clients on a particular day) I would apply a liquid foundation using a stipple brush right over the top of a greasy layer of moisturiser and jojoba oil. It looked really greasy and shiny but after an hour it would all soak in and look ok (that's ok as in just ok, not brilliant). But to be honest, I just tried to change my mindset and try not to wear foundation at all (a big deal for me at the time). As long as I avoided mirrors in the bathroom at work, I pretty much forgot during the day that I wasnt wearing makeup and everyone at work was really supportive when I explained I was trialing a new acne treatment so I was going to look like shit for a couple of months. No one batted an eyelid to be honest...I truly believe we are our own worse critiques.
One tip that I received from someone on here was to still apply all the other makeup, but just leave out foundation. So I still did my eyebrows, mascara and lip gloss, but just didn't apply foundation. That made me feel a bit better.
Good luck and hang in there kid.....what have you got to lose?

Aw thanks. I agree, I've really haven't been wearing makeup unless I've had photo shoots or shows. I messed up a bit today, though. I went a little crazy this morning in the mirror and squeezed a bunch of whiteheads. My face was so red because of its sensitivity that I caved and put on a new BB tinted moisturizer from Tarte. I did add 5 drops of jojoba oil to it though. It went on smoothly, but oily obviously haha. The jojoba oil kind of has a grainy texture to it, but it wasn't a big deal with the makeup. I'm seeing if, when it dries, my skin looks/feels a little better. I've heard that BB makeup can actually help a bit too (it doesn't have any active ingredients in it except for sunscreen). I don't know. The only thing I'm worried about is my skin looking oily with it.
I'm just always so scared that I'm doing the wrong thing!
You have to prepare to have less than stellar skin for at least 3 month or else you'll drive yourself nuts. Everything you are going through is normal for the regimen so as many people have stated, try to not pick, examine yourself in the mirror and just go about your life. If wearing make up will help relieve some of your anxiety, then do it. Mineral makeup is by far the best choice on terms of not breaking you out. Be careful of bare minerals though as it has bismuth which can irritate acne prone skin
Keep your head up girl

Thanks. Is there a mineral makeup that you recommend? I've found that many mineral powders make my breakouts and pores stand out (especially if you try to put more powder on the redder areas), while a water-based tinted moisturizer blends in better. Also, don't worry, I am SO anti-Bare Minerals. I have high suspicions that it caused my acne. My skin has been way better without it.
Edit: I just found this new product which has no comedogenic ingredients in it at all...that's a first! Think that it's worth the investment?
