10 Weeks And No Improvement

Like many, I have struggled with acne since I was 14-15. Tried EVERYTHING short of accutane. I'm now 28 and my acne is as bad as it's ever been. I've been on the regimen for 10 weeks now and I'm not seeing any real improvement. I'm following the regimen exactly as it's suggested. I'm using the AHA every other night in place of my moisturizer. I'm still getting cystic acne and the flakiness from the BP just makes me more embarrassed about my skin on top of the acne.

I was so encouraged by all the success stories but I feel like I'm just not going to be one of them. Feeling hopeless. Anyone else been on the regimen this long and not seeing results? How long should I stick with it before I give up and just deal with the acne and get rid of the darn flakiness?

Thanks for any encouragement or advice.

AshSf you must be feeling so frustrated, especially after reading the success stories on here where the regimen has worked fairly quickly (I was one of them).

BUT for many it takes much longer than 3 months before seeing major improvement, especially if the acne was cystic. All I can do is encourage you to continue, and might I suggest that you take weekly photos of your skin to monitor any change. Sometimes there is improvement but we forget how bad it was previously so the improvement just becomes the new normal (if that makes any sense).

As for the flakiness, now that is really annoying and was something that I hated in the early weeks, but your skin does eventually adjust. If you have reviewed the steps of the regimen and you know for sure that you are following Dan's instructions exactly then maybe you should try a change of product. What are you using currently besides the AHA? Oh and as for the AHA, I found that it worked much better for me when my skin was really dry and flaky by mixing it into my moisturiser, or applying a layer of moisturiser first and then applying AHA. If you arent already doing that, it would be worth trying.

But overall, you've done really well to get through the hardest part of the regimen and hit the 11 week mark which means you've gotten over the hardest part and I'm sure that if you just keep following the steps exactly, clear skin is not far away. A couple of tweaks here and there might just be the answer.

Thanks so much for your encouragement - it's really nice to hear from other people that have been in my shoes. I get what you say about the new normal...there have been minor improvements in the smoothness of the skin that is not breaking out. Also, when I'm getting a blemish it does come to the surface a little faster and heals a little quicker. I'll call that improvement.

I'm using all of Dan's products so I think it's safe to say it's not a product issue. When I'm really exceptionally dry, I'll use Cetaphil moisturizer because it's a little heavier. However, I don't like to use that during the day because it makes me greasier than Dan's moisturizer. I'll take your suggestion and do the moisturizer and then the AHA layer on top, instead of the AHA on it's own. Also, I've been doing the light jojoba layer on my skin before the BP because when I mix the jojoba with my moisturizer it doesn't seem to absorb as well.

Anyways, thanks for the encouragement - I'll stick with it and take some pictures. Hopefully I'll be getting over a hump soon!! I'm crossing my fingers that I will be one of the "older" acne sufferers that has a success story from this.

Thanks!

-Ashley

Ashley, I know many people on the boards have said that they have had success with applying jojoba oil BEFORE the BP but there lies a big difference to what you are doing compared to what Dan says to do.

Keep in mind that step 1 of cleansing is to remove surface oil to prepare the skin to absorb the BP. By applying Jojoba oil before the BP you are just placing a barrier so the BP will be absorbed less. Why don't you try following the instructions exactly as Dan describes for the next 3 weeks and see how it goes. I didnt alter anything to the regimen until I was completely clear and only then did I start tweaking it to suit me (while still making sure I stayed clear).

I'm sure you will be one of the 'successful ones'. You've come too far to give up now! I cant wait to hear how you get on :)

Cosign AyeAye... Try your best to stick to DKR exactly as instructed by Dan and see how you progress... Honestly, I didn't see any marked improvements until I reached the nine week mark and I still broke out after that... Significant improvement happened around the 12 week mark and overall clearing after 16 weeks.. So, for those with cystic acne (like you and I), DKR does take a bit more time to see real results... I would say that cystic acne takes about 3 to 6 months for getting clear skin on DKR... it's been a year since I started DKR, with really bad cystic acne, and I'm clear as day... :) Keep on trucking, it will improve if you stick to DKR to the T... GOOD LUCK and keep us up to date on your progress... :)

yes i agree. i got clear after 4 weeks but i got cocky so i tried the layer of jojoba oil before BP because i was so annoyed with the stinging and flakiness aaanddd... i broke out again. so i stopped that and just did the wash-bp-moisture regimen as directed. my pimples from that breakout are drying up now, and im not as flaky as i used to be. i actually stopped using the jojoba oil except on my laugh lines, lips, and that area bet. my nose and upper lip. i also stopped "exfoliating" my skin by rubbing it or scrubbing or basically excessively touching my skin. i noticed that my hyperpigmentation and flakiness went away naturally. also make sure that your hair products dont have harsh ingredients.

Your case may also be internal. diet plays a huge role in skin health. try to avoid sweets, fatty foods, and drink lots of water. you also might want to try zinc supplements. i got mine from walgreens for about $5. basically what im trying to say is, observe yourself and the things you do and try to figure out what else could possibly be triggering your acne formation. make up, diet, shampoo, detergent, all that stuff. you might be in for a total lifestyle change but hey, its gonna be worth it. smile.png

Thanks so much for this - these types of comments really do provide lots of encouragement. This week is already better than last week.

Thanks - went back to the basics. The flakiness drives me nuts, but it's better than the acne. I'll report back later with a progress report. Appreciate the encouragement
