Hi all,
I'm new to the forum. I have been on the basic regimen (Dan's products) for about 6 weeks now, cleanser, BP and moisturiser. It has worked wonders for me in that time as I have always had mild/moderate acne but at 24 having a few big red spots on each cheek and my forehead is just embarassing. The spots have now more or less gone apart from the odd one that pops but but it is usually small and goes in a couple of days so I am very happy with the results. Especially since I've always thought I had quite oily skin and I play a lot of sports so I'm sweating quite a bit most days of the week.
I do still suffer from blocked pores though and blackheads. After realising the cleanser and BP weren't really unclogging my pores I had a look at Dan's AHA and ordered some which arrived yesterday. Last night I tried it for the first time and I think I may have used a bit too much. Basically my face looks sunburnt today!!!! I did some reading on here and mixed 1/2 moisturuser (1 pump) and 1/2 AHA (similar amount to 1 pump). Was this too much? It did sting but not badly and it calmed down after 15 mins. I'm going to wait a few days before using it again but how much do you use with the moisturiser?
Anything I can do to help the redness? It is worse than the redness I sometimes get from BP...so much so I didn't go to work today cause I look very odd with a sunburnt face in the middle of the coldest UK spring (its still freezing here...no sun).
Thanks.
Edit: Just to add, I used to apply to moisturiser on quite thick as my skin has been getting really dry with the BP and the extreme cold weather, so I'd give it a good thick layer and let it all soak in. Could it be that the AHA layer was too thick? It seems to be more red around the areas where I applied a thick layer of the moisturiser/AHA.

Skin sensitivity is different for everybody. Some people do not get any redness from AHA and some do. Try doing the half and half method. Although I do not use Dan's products, my skin has responded pretty well from doing half moisturizer and half AHA in the PM. I do this every evening and it makes my skin feel and look really great when I wake up. Adding jojoba oil also helps.
I just got my AHA+, first time user (didnt think I would be allergic), and applied it this morning. I used 1/4 AHA+ and 3/4 moisturizer + 3 drops jojoba oil.
It really got away most flakyness. But I too am red. Not super red, but like I have a rash (not that I have) -red.
Im gonna apply a really small amount of AHA+ with the moisturizer before Im going to bed. Hopefully it will have eased down to tomorrow.
Just thought you would want my experience on it. As I am in almost the same shoes as you
And, btw, nicmic62 should know, as a veteran member, that you dont need to quote a person when its the first post.

Not really a veteran...I am fairly new to posting stuff on here. Is that like a general rule or something?

Hello... Generally speaking, AHA may cause redness and irritation for first time users. The best method for AHA application is to use the same amount of moisturizer you'd normally use, then add a few drops of AHA. Moisturizer acts like a neutralizer, thus reducing irritation and redness. Use the same method of increasing BP with AHA until your skin becomes accustomed. Eventually your skin will adapt and you can use AHA as a moisturizer, after applying BP. However, you should keep in mind that some people (like myself) can not use AHA alone because of skin sensitivity. Hopefully you are one of luck one's that can use AHA by itself. However, if you are like me, you'll need to use moisturizer to neutralize irritation and redness. Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress!
Thanks for all the replies. I've been using the AHA for almost 3 weeks now and things have gotten a lot better however I did cut back on using it. The first week I used it every night, 1/2 moisturizer and 1/2 AHA. The first day there was a lot of redness (looked like sunburn) and that stayed for 2 days but eventually went down however by the end of the first week I had a lot more red spots on my face than when I started the AHA!!! This could have just been my skin purging as some people say AHA causes but I had gone from 90% clear with a few scars/marks to having visible red acne again. So I decided to not use AHA as much as it was just making things worse and I looked better before. I stopped it for 3 days and the red spots started going down thanks to the BP but then some of the dryness set in again so I used 1/2 moisturizer and 1/2 AHA again that night and the next day my skin looked so much better. All the flakiness had gone and my skin was a lot softer and looked healthier.
Because of this I started using AHA every 2-3 days and it seems to be working much better for me this way (I still mix it with moistuizer). It really helps prevent flakiness/dryness for the 3 days and makes my skin look healthier so from now on I will continue to use it in this way, and because I'm not using it every night I don't seem to be getting the breakouts that I was getting when using it every night.
I have come to realise its better to take things slow and be patient rather than hope for over night results. I think the AHA over a few months will help a lot but I was too eager by using it every night which my skin didn't like. My suggestion to first timers would be to try it every 3 days for a couple of weeks, if that works well then every 2 days and if that works well then every night if you want.
Like The Tortoise and the Hare... slow and steady wins the race...
It's so easy to get a little over excited and go full steam ahead, but patience truly is the name of the game. (can I get any more cliche's in a single sentence? )
Glad that the AHA is helping with dryness, and over time (especially when you start to increase the dose) it will help to unblock clogged pores. I know it did with me (after an initial purge).
Let us know how you get on in a few weeks...always good to hear continued progress (or lack of, whichever the case).
i have the same exact problem.my dermatologist advised me to use neostrata ultra smoothing lotion aha 10.
at the beginning of the regimen i used to use a big portion of aha.so i got burnt.my skin is extremely red and it feels like i'm burning.i live in greece so i have to be aware of the sun exposure because the red marks will leave hyper pigmentation patches.now all that i do is to help my skin soothe and get rid of the extremely redness that caused me aha.
so i use a soothing cream and sunscreen.
i will begin the regimen again when my skin will look calm and at the beginning i will use small amounts of aha and not every day.
any advice of how i will get rid of the redness of my skin?will it leave me a permanent problem?
I have sensitive skin so when I first started using it my skin got really red and would take a few days to subside, so like you I used it about 3-4x a week with the half and half mixture. Also, I experienced a purge similar to you. My skin was starting to feel really soft, but i was also getting a lot of random spots that seemed out of the ordinary, which kinda sucked because it left new PIH since pimples always leave a mark on me no matter what...but it was probably over in about a week. And then the results were mindblowing
Good luck and hopefully you have success with the AHA!
what do you mean half and half?my aha comes in a lotion so i don't have to mix it with other stuff.should i?
If I'm using only moisturiser, I usually use about a nickel sized dollop of it. So when I first started AHA I would use like half a nickel-size dollop of that with another half of my regular moisturiser and mix those 2 together. It basically just dilutes the amount of AHA I'm using. Plus, when I first started using AHA it would sting a little and cause redness, no matter how little I used, so mixing it with my regular moisturiser helped keep that under control.
I can attest to the Redness.
I have been using AHA for some time. However for a bit, I have stopped.
I decided to hit my face again yesterday, and then BAM! stinging sensations........and today I look red. I imagine if I was caucasian I would look like a "lobster" as people say.
I think I just need to readjust, but I do remember that I was using AHA+ every night with no problems before, but now that I stopped using it and reusing it again, I have to skip a few days, reapply, skip a few days, etc. until my skin readjusts to using it.
I would imagine it may be the same for BHA. It either case I recommend using only "enough" to cover the surface with your finger tips, and not using an entire quarter size. Usually it would take two 3 little dots of the product to cover my face.
Man, I must have tough skin! (I don't, I actually have sensitive skin.) I did have to go through an adjustment period, but for the last 5 years I have used Dan's AHA on my face every morning and the BP on my face every night. I can only wash with Dove for sensitive skin, and granted, sometimes I skip an application of AHA and/or BP here and there. But overall, these 2 products have made a profound difference in my skin. I am an RN and a licensed esthetician, and have tried pretty much everything out there. I love the fact that the ingredients are relatively simple and do not contain parabens. I cannot live without them!
If you are experiencing redness and irritation, definitely skip one or more days in between applications. Also, make sure you are consuming essential fatty acids, which will help tremendously as well. It's important to keep in mind that people can suddenly develop an allergy or sensitivity to something that they have previously used with no problems. It's a bummer, but definitely possible. Don't force the issue if you are having a reaction every time you use it. Best wishes.
