Had perfectly clear skin until 6 months ago, when I got blown by severe acne that started and expanded in no time. Since then, I've changed my lifestyle completely. No smoking or alcohol, the ultimate anti - acne diet (no high or medium glycemic load foods, processed foods, grains, fats, 90% of my calories comin' straight from fresh leafy greens, taking Zinc, probiotic and Vit E supplements), literally no cheat days, washing my face twice a day, then applying BP (Epiduo, started after dermatologist insisted), clean pillow every day. Yet I haven't noticed any improvement for the last 4 months.Any ideas what could be causing it/ what should I do? I'm desperate, although I've had acne for like this little time, it has already wrecked my self-esteem and confidence and destroyed my mood and social life. Would really appreciate.

Many things could be causing your acne breakout... protein shakes, sugary drinks, processed meats, lack of raw foods, too many of the same vegetables that don't really do anything if your eating them with breads and meats, cooking oils, and DAIRY DAIRY DAIRY. Read my FAQ's and other posts on my profile. Hope that helps.

Won't risk doing that since another huge breakout would most likely make me kill myself. At least something that is more generally approved?

Before this started were you sick with a serious illness like the flu, shingles, virus, upper respiratory infection, or anything?

Did the dermatologist testyou for Demodex Skin mites? Most of them don't.

Everybody has these tiny microscopic mites. A healthy immune system keeps them in check. When the immune system is low, the mites can get overpopulated. When they get overpopulated, they can cause acne like lesions. But it won't respond to normal acne meds like antibiotics, BP, retinoids, etc. The mites eat oil. Any drug or diet change that reduces the oil output will appear to control the mites.

If it turns out to be mites, there is a 2 week oral treatment with 2 inexpensive generic drugs that can clear it up -Oral Ivermectin and Oral Metronidazole. Mine started after being sick in bed for 2 weeks with 2 viral infections. I was misdiagnosed with bacterial acne and allergic conjunctivitis (red eyes) for years. It wasn't either one. It turned out to be demodicosis caused by demodex skin mites. TheOral Ivermectin and Oral Metronidazole 2 week treatment cleared it up.

Here' s a link to the scientific paper on the 2 week oral treatment.

Tea tree oil facial wash can be helpful for mites, bacteria and fungus. Tranquil Eyes Eyelid and Facial Cleanser (1% Tea Tree Oil) by eye eco is gentle. Desert Essence Original facial cleanser is good but a bit more drying. Derma e makes a 5% Tea Tree oil antisceptic moisturizer. Tea Tree oil can be drying so a good moisturizer is a must.

It is good that you are working on building your immune system up and eating healthy.

I am in exactly in the same position. It sucks I feel you. People keep telling me I got lucky and this is only a 'phase'... ugh. I think it's sugar addiction and candida.

@ElaineA, thanks a lot for the info, although I don't remember being sick before this hell began. Definetely will ask my dermatologist about this on my next appointment, lucky enough, that's on Friday. Again, I really appreciate the help!

@Sophiavenus, that's exactly what my family and friends keep telling me, they really don't get it. Your skin getting from 9 to 0 in a month is not easy to accept and deal with. Hope everything goes well for you! Unfortunately, my acne must be either too tough to beat, or I simply haven't waited enough. I literally haven't tasted sugar or fast-food for half a year :(

Hopefully your dermatologist will listen and be able to help.  It is possible to get demodicosis without the redness and inflammation associated with Rosacea Type 2.  That is what I had, demodicsosis with  blackheads/whiteheads and some pustules without the general redness of rosacea.  I think that is why the 4 board certified dermatologists that I went to between 1983-2008 kept misdiagnosing it as acne (bacterial).  None of them ever did the test for demodex mites.   I hope this helps!  Good Luck!!!!
