Does Maca Root Powder Cause Pimples?

Hi

I started taking maca root powder around 1 month ago, with this recipe which uses 2 tbsp of maca: [removed]. after doing research claiming maca clears skin, balances hormones etc. I thought I had to try it. I have not taken it on it's own as the smell was awful so I didn't think i would like the taste, so i used this recipe to cover the taste. I eat between 3-4 of these cacao/maca balls a day, sometimes less, anyway one month on and I have had these random white heads appear all over my forehead, cheeks, sides of mouth and chin. I very rarely get white heads, Instead i normally get those horrible painful red ones, I have some of those too as well, but the sudden outbreak of white heads i found very strange. not too mention many little red spots all over my chest, back and shoulders - places i hardly ever get spots.

The only two changes i have made in my diet is this maca root powder and coconut oil, before my skin was 'okay'. but im convinced one of them is partly responsible.

Does anyone have some ideas, or had similar reactions/side effects??

Thanks!

I have been taking Maca powder for nearly a month, and my skin is the clearest it has ever been in months. I took it to address a hormonal imbalance.

Maybe the maca is not the cause of your white heads OR
Maybe the root cause of your acne is not a hormonal imbalance so the maca isn't helping you.

I would take time to consider other factors in your skin care regimen and environment. Some people find the caprylic acids or whatever in coconuts to be comedogenic. Some people find that coconut oil does not give them blemishes.

Maca has very polarized reviews. It either works for female acne or can make it worse. If you gave it more than a month and you are still breaking out, then it's not for you.

Definitely would not rule out the coconut oil. I know certain oils break me out so maybe cut that out as well

It sounds like you are ingesting quite a lot of saturated fats from the coconut oil (it has a mixed reputation). The only way to find out which you can tolerate is by cutting one out and not the other for a bit!

Maca root caused me to breakout when I took it so it could definitely be that

I basically started noticing awful acne on my chest, shoulders, alllllllll up and down my entire spine, and even on my upper arms . I never get acne in these areas. !! I believe it is the maca bc mine started like 2 weeks or maybe even less after starting it. I am going to tough it out though to as I want to see what kind of difference it made to my progesterone and estrogen balance in a couple of weeks (2 months s/p maca initiation). My progesterone and estrogen were within limits, but the balance between the two were off, so my Naturopathic Endocrinologist suggested the maca to naturally increase the progesterone. I will most likely be getting off of it soon after the bloodwork. Interesting. I wonder what is about us then. . I wonder what we need

I have started the maca root capsules and I'm getting exact same symptoms- whitehead /pimples around chin, cheeks, chest shoulders.

I was convinced that I have hormone imbalance-so when I looked into it maca seemed like a good solution but so far (its been a week) its not showing good results. What should I do?

If you have started experiencing skin issues after taking maca root capsules, it may be a sign that maca root is not suitable for you. It is possible that you may be experiencing an allergic reaction or that maca root is causing an imbalance in your body that is resulting in skin issues.

If you are concerned about the symptoms, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist who can examine your skin and help determine the root cause of your skin issues. They can also advise you on whether it is safe to continue taking maca root capsules or if you should stop taking them.

In the meantime, you may want to stop taking the maca root capsules to see if your symptoms improve. You can also try other natural remedies for hormone imbalances, such as consuming a healthy diet, managing stress, and getting enough sleep. If you are still experiencing issues, a healthcare professional may recommend other treatments or supplements that are suitable for you.
