I read the Atkins diet revolution back in 2013 and it cleared my skin. I had been on the vegan nonsense diets for my severe acne before and they never worked. I have been clear for over a year, I have not relapsed as I follow the rules and avoid all refined carbs, fruits and sugars. I would always relapse after 4 months on the garbage "vegan" diets in the past but on this diet I've stayed persistently clear. Yes eat dairy and meat and have no problems. I have no idea why I was ever avoiding this stuff before?

I have lurked this forum for years and never really hear ketosis and theatkins diet mentioned as benefiting acne as these boards seem very pro-vegan. Can someone give their input?

I havent read the atkins bookbut i have tried low carbish/paleo sort of diet restricting sugars/grains and eatingmainly salads, vege, nuts and meats. I have to say eating this way did improve my skin. However,i have started to havereal problems with lowenergy levels and seem to have nowbecome ultra sensitive to sugars - like i eat one piece of fruit and breakout andget a headache. I've also been reading alot of research into how diets high in animal products are not really natural for humans and can increase risk of cancer and other diseases. These sources say a low fat plant based diet lowers risk of cancer and is closer to what we should biologically be eating.

Thats not to say you have to be 100% vegan, but i just feel eating alot of meat and dairy may not be the best for our health ??? But there's so much conflicting info out there its hard to know what to believe.

I am experimenting a bit with my diet at the moment. Even though low carb does help with the acne i just dont feel the best eating alot of meat and such low amount of carbs. Ifeel there must be another way.

What exactlydo you eat on atkins - does it allow any grains or starchy vege? If it works for you and you feel good then thats great.

I did the atkins diet for a second timewith my dad last year as his supportbuddy. My face was probably the clearest it had been for years. At the time I was also using benzaclyn. I fell off the wagon when I traveled cross-country for a camping trip and even while still using themedication like normalmy face starting breaking out really bad within a week.

The atkins/low-carb DOES get a lot of flak, but it works for acne (and losing weight) and gets easier if onecan make it past induction. I mean, it's not going to work for everyone, there's no one method that works for everyone. But for me personally it did. I don't know what is was about it that helped, whether it was cutting out grains or dairy or processed carbs orwhat, but I can say that it was 100% beneficial for me. Even on benzaclyn and now retin-a i still get major outbreaks since I stoppedand my complexion isa total mess again despite nothing about my skin care regimen has changed.I'm not going to be going full atkins again, but I will be taking a paleo meal plan(which is similar to atkins just with a slightly different and less commercialized approach)for a spin this coming shopping trip to see if that will clear up the rest of my acne again.

Don't be afraid of dairy or meat. I promise you, it's the carbs and sugars that are evil. They make you insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is the driving force behind acne. "Your hormonal acne" is just pcos and insulin sensitivity which can be reversed with keto or Atkins within four months.

I love the Atkins diet. First time I did it as a teenager my skin cleared right up. Now in my old age (lol, 27) it doesn't seem to have the same effect, but my acne, or whatever you'd call it, is not the same as what I had as a kid. That being said, it certainly doesn't hurt my skin and it makes me feel wonderful physically, and I lost a lot of weight this way. I try to stay on this diet but I'm a fat ass and I suck so I am always on and off the wagon. Trying hard now, I even vowed not to make a feast for Christmas like I do every year. My husband and I decided on a "Keto Christmas". 😀

i wonder what your blood type is. the atkin diet sounds a lot like blood type o diet and the point of that is every blood type has a different diet so interesting...

@rollercoaster - not entirely sure it has anything to do with anything, but I'm o neg.

I'm back for a follow-up to my first post.

I'm 25 now and I've had horribleacne since, like, 10.I've been doing a low carb/paleo thing for about three weeks now and the acne on my face has completely cleared up and the acne on my back (tmi, maybe) is actually healing and not just big, red, and scary anymore. I believe if I keep at it I'll be totally clear in a few months. Aside from clearing up my acne and minor weight loss (not overweight to begin with, just seeing some slimming in certain areas)I've been seeing other benefits to my body as well such as better digestion and almost zero need for deodorant now, even though I still use it out of habit. A few weeks ago my face was an oil slick whereas now it's, like, normal and I don't need any special washes to manage oil. I'm also not using my prescription acne medications or any other supplementsanymore. Although I will be using my remaining tubes of retin-asince it's good for preventing wrinkles.

I think my acne may actually have been a bad reaction to grainsto be honest. I don't eat/drink itnow, but I've had dairy in the past while dietingand my face still cleared.Either way, I'm on board with this diet change for life at this point. I highly recommend to anyone that's been experiencing acne for years and unable to manage it with medication, like me,to try a low carb or paleo type way of eating (not vegan/vegetarian)for a month and see if it helps. You may just be experiencing an allergic reaction like me and not legit acne. You'll actually have to prepare all of your own food, butIt's not like you got anything to lose. Except maybe your acne, lol. Totally worth it for clear skin, wish I had done this waaaaay sooner.

What are you eating alyssa? Are you just eliminating grains or are you also restricting carbs in general (fruits, starchy vege etc)?

I find avoiding grains helps my skin but i still breakout from so called "paleo safe" food like fruit. So i dont think in my case its a reaction to grains, but extreme sensitivity to anything with high sugar/carbs. I just find it difficult to sustain such a low carb diet without my energy levels getting low. :(

When you were eating low carb were you also eating plenty of fats too? Avocados, butter, oils, coconut oil, nuts and seeds etc?

I eat avocado often and fish. But i don't eat alot of processed type oils because i have read they are not very good for the body - and they make me feel sick on the stomach. Also i take fish oil. I eat some nuts but i try to not overdo the omega 6s because they cause inflammation. Used to eat eggs as well but lately they have been giving me stomach aches - definitely have some gut issues going on.So i suppose you could say i eat moderate amounts of fat ?? Neither really high or low.

After christmas i want to try going lower carb again. Maybe try something like SCD or GAPs diet and start off with a few days just eating bone broths/soups to see if my digestion improves. I seem to be having alot of stomach issues at the moment. But theres no point trying to stick to a diet on Christmas day!

That's sounds great, I was just wondering because if you wereeating enough fats then you should have good energy levels overtime, after the first couple weeks until your body gets used to it. That'sa good idea to detox a bit before it with the bone broth yeah and possibly look into digestive enzymes.

Omega 6's are quite important, although they have been linked to inflammation they are still essential as well as Omega 3 since the body can't make them. It's important get the ratio of Omegas correct and in the western world today is about 15:1 (omega 6 and Omega 3, respectively) which isn't great. Rapeseed, canola, flaxseed, walnut, olive in small amounts are fine.

It was Atkins dieters claims of the diet clearing their skin that made me realize that all those dermatologists were wrong and diet does affect acne. And from one of Atkins books, i grasped how damaging sugar is and we cannot be consuming anywhere near the amounts that are in the typical modern diet. There's more sugar in one can of coke than we should have all day.

That said, I don't care for the diet. Just eat real, whole nutrient dense food.

South Beach Diet people did a survey of their dieters & most reported clearing skin. The creator is a really important cardiologist, btw.

This right here is the most sound answer.
