So I recently went to my dermatologist yesterday and my mom asked her if certain foods like dairy, eggs, chocolate, sugar will trigger acne? And the dermatologist said no. And with that, my mom and dad have now been forcing me to eat foods like eggs, noodles, milk because they said its good for your body. I've been on a regular diet for almost a year now which consists of brown rice, spinah and fish and it has gotten rid of my acne. Now all of my hard work on losing weight and getting rid of acne is a waste and I keep fighting my mom and dad that I don't want to eat any of the things they suggested because I know they will cause acne to the point where I CRIED in front of a crowd full of people in the mall, which isn't the first time. And later, I will go out of town and guess where we'll have dinner at? A noodle shop. Usually, I would prepare my own regular meals with brown rice, fish and spinach but my mom didn't allow me this time because she made a deal that if we went out to eat I would have to buy the food they sold but if we were at home I could eat my regular meals.
I don't know what to do, I've been so stressed and depressed and worried that I might get more acne by eating those foods because my face has been really clear since I ate my regular food but my parents are hard to convince now that my dermatologist told them about the food eating thing. Can anyone help me try to convince them? Or can you at least tell me if foods does cause acne especially the ones above?
no one can tell you how your body will react to any food...it just doesn't work that way
gluten and dairy absolutely are an issue for me and trigger cysts....I know this, and my dermatologist (two of them) insists that can't be the case- okay sure
you have to go on an elimination diet, sell it to your mother that you want to try to not eat any dairy for 30 days, and see what happens, get your parent involved as well....after 30 days if no change then you probably can eat dairy....then eliminate gluten for 30 days and see what happens
but no one can tell you if you will react to any foods...good luck to you but this you must figure out on your own
Of course the dermatologist will say no to the acne-diet connection. Why? Simply because THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF YOU! They want you to keep paying for visits & products/ prescriptions. Most dermatologists are not well educated in areas outside of their field, e.g. nutrition, so of course they will argue for what they know. They don't want to lose customers. It's like if you were selling televisions and someone asked to buy a radio...of course you would want them to buy what you're selling and not go for something else. It's all about the $$$ unfortunately. I have yet to meet a truly well-rounded & compassionate dermatologist...whenever I used to see them, they would treat me like a standardized, impersonal patient.
I really hope this guy isn't implying that the link between diet and acne is a myth. Conspiracy theories regarding the pharmaceutical industry aside, there aren't enough financial incentives for anyone to conduct costly in-depth studies on the diet-acne link, hence why progress towards recognising it is so slow. The fact that the founder of this site encourages smothering your face with a combination of bleaching agent and acid pretty much says it all, and just like drug companies, he would rather you buy his product than try to resolve the underlying issue.
There are many dermatologists now that do recognise that food can have an effect on your skin, would you be able to see a different dermatologist in the hope that they are more understanding? There are a few papers available which have results supporting the diet-acne link, maybe if you search for some sources supporting the notion you could show you parents to help them understand? Finally, I don't know what your relationship is like with your parents, but can they really force you to eat anything without literally force feeding you? Try to stress to them that you enjoy the foods that they're trying to make you eat, and if you were able to you would love to incorporate them into your diet, but you are absolutely certain that they give you breakouts.
If it came down to it, could you take pictures before and after? Maybe a visual comparison of the difference your diet makes would make them realise that you do know your own body after all...
Good luck!

Have you read Dan's personal story about his experiences with diet & acne? It seems reasonable. Dan isn't all about the money. He's a legit dude.
I have and while I do think some people on this board obsess a little too much about diet, I know for a fact simple carbs like white potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, milk etc...give me problems.

All i've seen is that he tried to eat what he claims was a paleo diet, but didn't, as he ate foods which aren't part of a paleo diet.
He also talks about his 'anecdotal' findings, after shooting down other natural treatments based on their 'anecdotal' evidence... so clearly his conclusion means nothing as well. The Regimen works (sometimes) because it addresses the environment on the skin which makes the creation of acne possible... I may be wrong but I believe the BP allows oxygen to reach deep into the pores and kills bacteria which cause the initial infection. It doesn't address the root cause of the problem. Some people are OK with that, and that's perfectly fine... others would rather stop it in its tracks from the point of origin.
If you look online you'll find scientific evidence supporting the relationship between diet and acne, there's not enough and everyone is different so we're not quite at the stage where we can pin-point the exact causes of acne, but one day research will get there. By no means is diet the only contributor to acne - there's countless others (pollutants, trauma / friction on the skin, stress, allergies etc. etc.) but I assure you as someone with zero agenda and zero benefit from preaching this post that diet (in some people) affects acne.

Have you tried coming at it from a glycemic index point of view? Like foods that cause a sharp rise in blood sugar can trigger acne. Most of the foods you listed are high on the glycemic index, with the exception of dairy and eggs.
Also you could get tested for an allergy to dairy or eggs. Sometimes mild food allergies do not show up as gastrointestinal issues, but as skin issues. Maybe go see an allergy specialist about that?

I agree everyones body reacts differently. Like me for example, I cut out gluten for over 6 months and doing so was not eating nearly enough carbs which caused thyroid issues and started getting cysts and hair thinning.
