Donuts Seem To Be The Culprit

I am 28 and I have had acne for 16+ years. It has always been off-and-on. The past couple years I've been trying to identify a pattern.

During the past 5 years, my acne has been better than before. During the past 5 years, I have been eating healthier. However, I recently went through 3-4 months of bad acne again. It was primarily around my nose, and secondarily under my mouth. Those huge ones that start and build big deep under the skin, eventually surfacing to massive ones.

I observed that around the same time the worse acne started, a new donut shop opened in town, and I was eating tons of donuts. My donut intake skyrocketed since I'd stop there about twice per week, and people would bring them into work & I'd eat many of those.

So, about 2 months ago I stopped eating donuts, and my face has now been clearer than it has been in 16 years.

Anyway, I'm seeing a lot of topics/posts saying that donuts don't cause acne, so I wanted to get this observation online that from what I can tell, for me personally, donuts are pretty directly involved in the equation.

So, if you can't seem to identify the cause, and you eat donuts, try cutting them for a couple months and see what happens.

could possibly be the gluten or sugar in the donuts?

I do not find that surprising. I guess very likely they are fried in oil that can have inflammatory influence on acne ( like sunflower oil) and then they also have tons of sugar that influence your hormones . Fried sweet stuff used to make me break out a lot before spiro. Donuts and a latte macchiato ....hmm...I loved it but I always knew that I would have to pay for this bitterly: oil, sugar, caffeine and dairy. Can't get anyworse acne- wise I think...

Yea it is most likely the high oil content which is probably soybean oil, sunflower, safflower, corn, or canola oil. All of these and most other "vegetable" oils are high inflammatory. I would say that most people will see an improvement in their acne if they completley eliminated all hydrogenated oils such as from margarine, "vegetable" oils, nuts, salad dressings, mayonnaise, fried food, donuts, pasta sauce, baked goods. The best fats to eat are probably from wild fish, and then coconut oil, palm oil, organic butter/ghee, olive oil, avocados, animal fats etc.

It's been 2 more weeks since my first post and my face acne still hasn't come back.

Good idea on the oil. I'll have to check with the donut shop to see what kind they use.

Gluten or sugar... Maybe?

That is what I would have guessed. They use sunflower oil here in europe and probably soy oil in the USA. I still eat fried foods, but I switched to coconut oil if i fry things. I avoid liquid oils whenever possible, and use coconut fat or butter by grass-fed cows. If I can't avoid them, I use olive oil.
