Hi. I've just been prescribed Saw Palmetto for prevention of hair loss and I also know it can help acne. Anyway I've been reading online and there are apparantly side effects.

I would like to know a few things:

1. Does it really cause your blood pressure or any sort of bad blood problems? and any liver problems?

2. Does it cause men to grow man boobs?

3. Does it make your prostate worse or better? (in the long run) I don't know if they're saying it's good for prostate cancer or something or it can cause it.

4. Can it cause weight gain?

5. Does it cause any long lasting side effects even if you stop taking it? I have been told to take it for 8 months (once per day)

Anyone, can you please help me. My hair specialist said it has no side effects....

Gah! I don't know what to do! the ONLY reason I want to take saw palmetto is for my hair to prevent anything, but my anxiety is going crazy!!

Also can you exercise whilst on it? or would it be pointless - if saw palmetto blocks DHT and exercise causes DHT, would you not be getting any muscle gain from exercising if it's blocking it?

Someone PLEASE answer!!

It's taken to improve prostate health. What ever side effects you might get from doing things to alter your hormones (besides just eating, sleeping, exercising right) is individual.

The main beneficial substance in Saw Palmetto is the beta sitosterol and it's found in all plant fats. There's quite a lot in an avocado, for example. And pumpkin seeds, which are also very high in many nutrients beneficial to acne.

A lot of it depends on the dosage.

I was taking it for 2 or 3 months, and this is what I noticed:

1. Increased appetite

2. Muffin top/ mid-section weight gain but...

3. overall weight loss...I looked unhealthy

4. Brain fog!

5. Only helped with acne very slightly at the beginning, then nothing

6. Slight reduction in unwanted body hair & fuzz

7. I think my hair looked a bit healthier, but nothing too drastic. It may take longer than 3 months to notice a difference

8. I think its anti-androgenic impact increased my estrogen, hence the mid-section weight gain

Have you tried hair products that contain saw palmetto? I know murad has a hair serum, and other companies too. Not sure how effective it is topically, but it's definitely safer to apply topically than take internally.

Dude, seriously, I think you've been agonizing over saw palmetto for months now?

Just take it or don't. You really don't know how you'll react to it until you try. It's not going to do anything irreversible to you (this is why I must still take spironolactone because as soon as I go off it, my hormones go right back to what they were before).

My only recommendation is to combine it with another herb because saw palmetto alone is very dehydrating. It also helps to have slightly different mechanisms for the DHT instead of just one. Something like saw palmetto one day, pumpkin seed oil the next, would help you avoid side effects.

And yes, most of the prescription hair loss treatments, such as Propecia, do what saw palmetto does, which is block or reduce DHT.
