Acne is beginning to gradually make things worse.

I would so anything to have clear skin.

What you see below is my makeup regime everyday. I hate it, I hate layering on foundation to cover up my painful skin but it's the only things I can do !

I wake up in the morning and loathe my skin. If I catch my reflection during the day, I feel like someone has hit me in the stomach.

I want to be able to wear barely any makeup and not worry about my skin but I just can't. :(

I am on anti-epileptic medication that has turned my manageable(ish) acne into full blown cystic painful acne.

Does anyone ANYONE have any good info on acne diets that will help me clear up my skin. I am willing to try anything :(

Have you considered a Ketogenic diet? The reason I recommend it is because it has been known to help with symptoms with epilepsy, and it also cleared up my face! Could be a worthy solution for you smile.png

There's at least 50 to choose from that people here have claimed to be miraculous.

Here's some I can immediately think of:

1. Gut diet

2. Paleo

3. Vegan

4. Raw vegan

5. Gluten free

6. Dairy free

8. Avocado and raw fish diet

9. Meat only

etc.. never ending list of miracle diets that conflict each other.

After reading this nutrition forum for the past 3 years, I just gave up listening to hype and eliminated all foods. Then I slowly introduced each food back in one by one until I got my diet. If it didn't break me out, I left it in. What that left me with was a selection of roughly 10 - 15 things I could eat.

I'd read all the threads to see what others think, then decide for yourself what to believe.

I think the general consensus (with many exceptions) is to eliminate these foods to be safe:

gluten, processed foods, dairy, soy, corn, and anything that spikes blood sugar. Also, know your allergies.

If you have a working diet, creams and other stuff shouldn't be necessary. Also skin oil should return to normal within a few weeks.

Let me know if you need help.

Yes,, and thats good for every thing to do with your health. Although you may be able to tolerate some dairy, gluten, other grains, they just shouldn't be a big part of your diet. And you hold try avoiding completely for a month or so to test for intolerance. Do you have any kind of digestion issues?

Take a look at your health history to help you determine the right diet for you. If your anti-epilepsy medication is triggering your acne, then why not switch to a different one? Visiting a naturopath or holistic doctor might be useful - they can give you some herbal recommendations for epilepsy that do not interfere with your skin.

Also, if you are using a lot of cosmetics on your face, that could be irritating your acne. try to have at least 1 makeup-free day a week. I know it's very hard, but give it a try to see if it's your makeup that is making it worse. Maybe use mineral makeup (something without too many ingredients - avoid bare minerals and anything with bismuth and parabens) and see if you notice an improvement in the texture.

Most importantly: be patient! No diet is going to show immediate results. You need to stick with it for at least a month or 2, and then modify it if you are not seeing improvement.

Just discovered this relative of cilantro that can tolerate more heat. (I was annoyed to discover we can't grow all the ingredients for salsa here in Houston because cilantro doesn't like the heat). It's called Culantro and is more common in Cuba, Central America and other tropical places. The wikipedia site says it's been traditionally used as a treatment for epilepsy and it's anticonvulsive qualities have been scientifically documented. But they are missing the citation. Maybe you want to look into it.

Traditional medicine

E. foetidum has been used in traditional medicine for burns, earache, fevers, hypertension, constipation, fits, asthma, stomachache, worms, infertility complications, snake bites, diarrhea, and malaria.[3]

Eryngium foetidum is also known as E. antihystericum.[4] The specific name antihystericum reflects the fact that this plant has traditionally been used for epilepsy.[5] The plant is said to calm a person's 'spirit' and thus prevents epileptic 'fits', so is known by the common names spiritweed and fitweed. The anticonvulsant properties of this plant have been scientifically investigated.[6][medical citation needed] A decoction of the leaves has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and analgesic

Yes definitely find a diet that works for YOU! It may be a lot of trial & error, but as long as you're taking the steps and feel great about it that is fine :] It will be worth it! What people have suggested so far is great. Cut out foods one at a time (of a bunch at once like I did) to see if it improves your skin. When I saw immediate improvement i was so excited!

As far as make-up goes, I still wear a little foundation almost everyday even though I could go without it.. I am totally not against it I would definitely suggest safflower oil (you can get it at safeway or other stores for pretty cheap) with cotton rounds heavy dipped in the oil to remove your make-up at night. It is a much gentler way to completely remove all make-up without irritating acne as the oil will make it slide right off & this oil also won't clog pores. Then you can just wash off the oil and excess make-up when you wash your face at night.

For me personally, and for many people I know, what worked best (and continues to work I guess) is more or less a paleo diet with no dairy or grains and loaded with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant rich, low-glycemic foods. As others have said, it's usually a good idea to avoid highly processed foods and anything that will spike blood sugar. Not only will it be good for your skin, it will be good for your overall health and well-being.

You can find a food's antioxidant content based on its ORAC value, and view its inflammation factor on NutritionData.com
