HI,
My physical reports came back 3 months back with Vit D deficiency. I was on a prescription supplement for 3 months and the doctor has advised me to continue supplementing. Is the Now D3 brand 5000IUs safe to take? Has anyone broken out taking these?
Any other recommended brands?
Thanks
Hi,
Your name looks familiar. I think you posted on my cure thread.
I also mentioned the NOW brand.
What was your number?
Mine was 14, which was very low. So 5,000 is nothing. I was on 20,000 IU a day for a couple months to bring my numbers up. Whenever I took less than 9,000, my numbers would not move or would inch up very slowly. I've read before the average male who is... I think around 150 pounds? Or was it 125 pounds? Used up about 5,000 IU of vitamin D a day (for the body to function). So if you are deficient, your body basically used up most of that 5,000 IU that day. And did not save any for storage.
Also, you can easily get 10,000 IU from sitting in the sun for about 20-30 minutes (depending on how fair you are).
The prescription vitamin D is no good. I don't know why doctors still prescribe this crap. It is D2, which the body does not use well. You need to use D3.
I have used, and still use the NOW brand vitamin D3.
Again, like I said, I do not use the liquid because it has some other stuff in it that I do not like. But the capsule 5,000 IU is great, and just has the olive oil + D3 from lanolin. It brought my numbers up fast too. I was at a 14, and now I am around 88. Somewhere in the 80s. I never take less than 5,000 IU. Always at least that number, a day. I do not take 20,000 IU anymore because that was just to get my numbers up. I take around 10,000 everyday now.
Also, if you research.......vitamin D3 RDA is no where close to be adequate enough. Especially if you are an acne sufferer... and been on prescriptions where they tell you to avoid the sun, and give you SPF 50 and crap... and if you are an average american constantly indoors for school... or for work... when the hell do we have time to get some sun? Unless you are smoker and stand outside to smoke to get your D3.
good luck!
Yes I did. Mine was 18..close...I took 50,000 IUs of D2 every week for 3 months which I now know is useless.
I have ordered Now D3 5000IUs, I will try to get my blood work done for vit d to ee how much I need to supplement now.
Being brown skinned does not help either, And for some reason Indian girls are told not to get out in the sun due to fear of looking too tanned...hahahaha.
You are right about school, work and no sun. I try to get out for sometime during the day but does not happen regularly.
and I dont smoke..
THanks for your help. I am getting better but its the leap from 95% to 100% clear I am struggling with. And I do not want to add anymore red marks to my face.

I like the Nutrigold brand, but I like sunlight even better. Just minor sun exposure 30 minutes a day you can make the D3 you need.
My endocrinologist pointed out to me that only recently have we all decided as a society to shut ourselves off from natural light indoors and slather on chemicals every time we step outside. We are meant to get light from the sun on a daily basis. If you're worried about skin damage/cancer, 30 minutes a day is very minimal and it's not going to increase your risk for melanoma.
The recent research on melanoma is pretty interesting too. Did you know the most likely place for a cancerous spot is IN THE ARMPIT and in between the thighs? How much sun do you get directly in your armpit?? It is making a lot of people wonder if we've misinterpreted the connection between sun exposure and the development of cancerous cells.
Hey
Where would you get your Vit D tested. Everywhere I call they ask me for a doctor's order.
I do not want to overdose, so I am a little worried.

Hi sustakp.
lol!!! Yes, I know plenty of people that need to be the "right amount of tan". ^^
At your level,... you could take all of the capsules in that vitamin D bottle and not overdose. lol That's how low your number is. Most people who have psoriasis are taking 5,000 - 20,000 IU a day to keep it away. You should google it ! People put up pictures and everything.
When you get the pills, you should start off with just one pill a day. See how you do. If you feel okay, I would take 10,000 IU a day til you get your levels up. Again, I am not a doctor, but I had to go through this, and I have talked to many people and read many research papers on this. But definately do your own research too ! When I was first diagnosed, the doctor was not even concerned with my level. She didn't even give me a prescription (which I thank god she didn't because D2 is some crap. and expensive when D3 over the counter is used by the body and cheap!). She just told me to take 2,000 IU a day. I did that for what felt like forever and my numbers would not move, or sometimes it would go down! Or move up maybe 5 points. I was like... really... But then I realized I was deficient that 2,000 IU is good for someone who is at a good level (above 50, and less than 100),... but that wasn't going to do jack for me.
If you are deficient in vitamin D, you could be deficient in calcium as well because vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption. And if you take calcium, you must take magnesium (at a good ratio). The calcium/magnesium supplement I take is at a good ratio AND has the K2 that everyone raves about when taking vitamin D (because it puts the calcium in your bones and not your organs). Not sure if the K2 works but... eh... There are books out there and experts hyping it up.. I just got lucky that it was added in my supplement.
As for where I got tested... my doctor tested it for me.
She is just a general practitioner, and I basically told her I was diagnosed with a deficiency and have been trying to get my levels up. And that I wanted a blood test to see where my levels were at.
The person that diagnosed you with your deficiency, they can do it too. I'm assuming maybe the person that diagnosed you was an endocrinologist? If so,... then you could easily go to them and ask them to get it done since they diagnosed you with the deficiency.
You do have to make an appointment though... just like a regular doctor's appointment. I would schedule an appointment about 2 months after you start taking the pills. Most people say 3 months... but I think 2 months is better since you want to know if your numbers are even moving at all.
So.... in summary,.. the person who diagnosed you should be able to request the test for you.

I got tested by my GP last time. I just called her and setup a check for tomorrow. This week I am taking 5000IUs a day and next week depending on my reports will up my intake. I have been getting alot of sun in the last few months staying in So.Cal but I am sure not enough to raise my numbers.
Thanks for your help. I hope this helps my acne as well.

Yes, that is the way to do it. I'm sure she will understand and be more than willing to test you. I try to get some sun too and I know some people lower their dosages in the summer time and take more in the winter... But I am not one of those people. lol I take the same amount all year around because I do the same thing all year around. Like right now... I'm taking 4 summer classes so I am indoors a lot. But since it is summer... I try to stand outside while drinking a smoothie and take a break. lol And no prob!

Hi whoartthou1,
Vitamin D3 should NOT be taken on an empty stomach.
Vitamin D3 is a fat soluable (spelling.. lol) so it is best to take it with fat. Like.. butter... steak.... fish.... omega 3.... nuts.... stuff like that.
I have also read conflicting studies on whether or not it is best to take it during the day or during the evening. It seems that the morning-afternoon is best. I take mine in the morning after my smoothie and my levels still went up. Also, the vitamin supplement I take (the now brand) has olive oil so that is some fat... But I put sunflower seeds and almond milk in my smoothie. Sometimes I also put coconut oil in my smoothie for some fat. But then again, I also take an omega 3 capsule (the krill oil) and I think this is fat too...
>Should vitamin d be taken with food or on an empty stomach?
Thanks. If you do not mind me asking, how bad was your acne prior to incorporating vitamin d3 into your regimen?
What is your diet like?
thanks!
Hey! I got your message, and just replied to it! I don't think you asked me the type of acne I got.
My acne was always moderate throughout high school. But it became CYSTIC and nodules and everything filled up with puss that would hurt. I also had small comedone ones with all that gunk in my pores. My face looked busted. It was a wreckkkkkkk!!!!! I went to so many derms, and once they saw me, they immediately told me i needed accutane. That should tell you how bad it was. My parents were horrified too and treated me like I had some type of disease. It was very bad. I don't know how else to explain. lol
Every time I took a vitamin D3 supplement I broke out. I tried both the tincture/ liquid and capsules from solgar, which is the brand I usually go for, and also tried some less expensive ones with no positive results. I am suspecting that it is the oil and other fats in the supplements that breaks me out....has anyone got recommendations for a D3 supplement with no oils/fats that can still be absorbed in the body?
