Raisins, Red Wine And Cystic Acne

I hope this helps someone else.

I had suffered from cystic acne on my face, neck, shoulders and back for over a decade as an adult. I started with tetracycline, then went through the whole pharmacy of antibiotics until I ended up on minocycline.

Just before Christmas one year, I had my blood work done for my physical. My liver enzymes were a mess. (Sorry, I don't that've the specific details) the consensus of my docs, after realizing I probably didn't have liver disease, was that I should stop drinking and taking minocycline and get retested in a month. A the time I was only drinking red wines. I loved them. Nonetheless I stopped.

Suddenly, I had the clearest skin I could remember. I had my blood work repeated a month later. My labs were comfortably normal. I got a clean bill of health to consume alcohol again. My assumption was that the antibiotics didn't help, and possibly hurt my skin. So, I had a couple glasses of red wine and swore off on antibiotics.

Within a couple days of the red wine, my cysts were back. I stopped the red wine again. My skin cleared again. Over the last few years, my skin has stayed clear, remarkably clear. I have tested lots of different grape products. If a product is based on red grapes, like red wine, raisins or grape juice, my cystic acne returns.

Just recently, I figured it would be safe to simple taste my wife's reportedly delicious merlot. Bang, a cyst started the next day but never fully bloomed.

I am convinced I have found my trigger. I hope this helps someone else find theirs.

Interesting. Do any grains cause you breakouts? What about olive oil?

Last but not least, regarding the raisins, if you ate 4-5 raisins, would you get cysts, or only if you ate a lot more?

If I eat a bowl of raisin bran, I will break out. If I eat a muffin with raisins, I will break out. If I eat oatmeal with raisins, I break out. Chocolate or yogurt covered raisins, ditto. I bet all of those would include about 10-12 raisins.

Also, just as an aside, green raisins, green grapes and white wines do not cause break outs

Possibly the resveraterol. Other good sources include mulberries, cocoa and peanuts.

Also, I'm pretty sure grapes are usually included in lists of hypoallergenic foods--foods few people are intolerant to. So it goes to show you that you can be intolerant to anything.

And here we have yet another anecdote demonstrating my suspicion that cystic/nodular acne is some kind of allergic or other inflammatory response. As mine was. I should start a list, although there have been many posters in the past that are no longer here.

i've tried and now i IGNORE or WATCH!crazy.gif
