When i started this I went all out too. Didn't really work my way into it. I had some gas pains for like a week when I'd drink kefir, but just pushed through and am doing much better. No symptoms whatsoever when eating tons of probiotic sources.I'd say if its bearable, just keep doing what you are now.
I wish I could say it is bearable but the past week, especially yesterday and today, has been very tough to get through. I remember dejaclairevoyant saying they started to get bloating problems, just wondering has this gone away yet?
Hey! Yes sorry I've been meaning to update. My bloating had completely gone away at the level I was at (2-3 glasses of water kefir a day + fermented foods with every meal and probiotics with every meal). Then I started munching on the kefir grains and have been having lots of bloating again. But of course that's to be expected. There's a LOT more bacteria in the grains and I'm eating them pretty haphazardly... '
My skin is doing great! All the major cystic acne is gone now, just a few small pimples here and there. When new ones crop up, they vanish fairly quickly. The bad cystic breakout I had a little while before my period is still on its way down. My forehead is completely clear now.
It's definitely not an easy or quick fix but I'm happy about where this path is taking me so far. I probably have better skin than I have anytime in the past year since I've committed to being chemical free and off topicals. I even took a bite of my boyfriend's gluten-free bread last week with no consequences. It was only a bite, but still. It's good to know I could maybe work my way back toward being able to eat pizza or pasta once in a great while, in the future.
I'm going on vacation for a couple weeks and when I return I plan on making kefir by gallon jars so I can drink 3-4 glasses per day. I also plan on ordering a high-quality probiotic supplement and adding that into my protocol.
edit-- Oh and my bathroom trips have completely normalized again. I think the constipation was just a weird temporary symptom due to my body adjusting to the new levels of bacteria.
From my experience I would say that everyone with a poor gut flora experience some type of symptoms (e.g. gastrointestinal, brain fog) when they introduce new sources of probiotics and prebiotics such as kefir, sauerkraut, oligofructose supplement etc. These initial symptoms might last for days or even weeks in some people, depending on the severity of the dysbiosis.
Acne will also get worse during and after this phase because GI problems will promote some inflammatory response.
That's why it's important to start with a small quantity and slowly increase the dosage. Start adding one product at the time and stick with it.

It is helpful reading things like this as I just wanted to give up last week with the way I was feeling. I'm taking things much slower now, just having a couple of bits of fermented foods a day and then eventually I will add in my probiotic supplement which I will only take one a day from the start and gradually move up.
What is your opinion on vegetables like broccoli? I eat loads of it and I have always wondered about its affects on my bloating. I have read in several places it causes bloating and even one place stated it is more difficult to digest than meat. Would it be best to stick to things such as leafy greens and such for now?

All vegetables are okay (Nightshades might be problematic for some). Cruciferous vegetables such as broccolig are easier to digest if they are steamed or cooked.
Help me please! I have taken on a paleo diet inevitably, and was eating oatmeal and all of a sudden breaking out. I cut grains and my skin is better. Been following a super healthy diet for more than 4 years, been gluten free, dairy, soy free for over a year, but still have acne and goosebump skin. I live at college and have been struggling to have nice skin, but still eat healthy. I stopped eating grains and few weeks ago, and then came home for thanksgiving and started eating some all natural peanut-butter and other legumes that are probably all anti-nutrient filled! Oh gosh! I ODed on fermented cod-liver oil to counter this. I have been craving nuts though. How is it possible to crave something that has anti-nutrients in it? Like chocolate is supposed to be bad, but such a good source of magnesium. I find it hard to get magnesium and such without eating nuts, but then they F up your nutrient balance and omega 3 balance.
Also, I have been supplementing with a lot of probiotics lately, but! I am afraid that since I go to school in Long Island, New York that the water I shower in is probably filled with chlorine, and I can't put a filter on the shower because it's a common floor shower. I am so conflicted and paranoid now. I am trying to be so healthy but then the chlorine in the water is destroying my gut most likely. And, I'm an athlete so I like to shower daily just to rinse my skin. Also, I don;t even use soaps. Should I just stop being paranoid and keep rebuilding my gut? My hope is that even-though I am showering is this water that, hopefully my gut will be so strong and probiotic rich that even if it suffers a blow it can take it.
I'm low GI , fermenting my own veggies under my bed in my dorm, no grains, and trying to cut nuts (peanut butter!), life is so unfair
There is tons of magnesium in greens. Also, I don't think the water you shower in is going to destroy your gut, especially not if you're eating healthy foods and many different sources of probiotics. The damage from chlorine in the water would come from drinking tap water.

Wow! Thanks for responding!!!
After reading this I was paranoid! http://www.foodrenegade.com/chlorinated-showers-baths-kill-gut-flora/
I sorta feel like digging up some dirt and eating it, getting freaked out again! Spent all day acne researching again. I have things to do but this is preventing me from being my best and using my time wisely! Following the gut diet for now! Just wanna be pretty again :(!
I dont't think I eat enough calories. I eat meat, and veggies. I have spinach for breakfast, snack on apples, and then eat fermented veggies, and meat for dinner. I prob eat 1,500 calories a day I feel and I'm a Division 1 runner. I feel alright, but how can I be eating so little! I weigh 130 pounds.

That is really scary. I didn't know about any of that. But it seems to me that if that were the case, everyone would have damaged or destroyed gut flora because almost everyone is bathing in that water. Some people clearly have working guts. I'm sure it's a factor, but if we are already on the probiotics/gut-healing program I'd think we'd be ahead of most people.

You are overanalyzing everything and obsessing about stuff that isn't important.
Just follow The Gut Diet precisely (with several sources of prebiotics and probiotics) and be persistent (it's no point in starting if youa aren't going to stick to it for atleast 2-3 months before you make ANY changes)

Yes, it's awful!!! You're right! I'm hoping that my fermented veggies and the gut diet will be the last step in healing me completely. I have pretty much eliminated my bacne over the years by diet, but still don't want to wake up with cheeks fullof zits that leave marks! I wanna just work on eliminating scars! Even my bum has some bumps and that is so embarrassing especially when i'm intimate!

What about getting enough calories? You're so right! I over analyze everything!!!!!!!! I think that fermented veggies, apples, and meat at every meal will be more than enough!! Just because i'm not getting 2,000 calorie and I run everyday, doesn't mean my body doesn't have enough to sustain itself. And I have been taking a sig of 100 bill probiotics from water kefir I got at whole foods for about a month now and before that I was taking a supplement everyday, but was eating sweet potatoes and grains. Now I cut the grains and my skin is the same, just a little brighter. My digestion is good though, just no improvements in my skin.
I am afraid to try eggs, cut really? What have I got to lose? I'm going to butter myself up. Been over 2 years sinceI've eaten ANY kind of dairy. It's a good source of calories and so yummy. I dunno if I should clarify it or if that's unnecessary. I could eat butter and veggies all day.
Too scared to try butter and eggs, haha! I can't, I feel like I will react to them. Is it possible to heal my gut if I am unknowingly eating things I'm intolerant to? I don't react to eggs, but who knows these days with people being intolerant to bananas. I don't have money to get an intolerance test, but know once the gut is healed they will go away. I can't tell if I have intolerances by just how they make me feel, I just want to not be afraid to even eat eggs.
You don't have to eat dairy if you don't want to. If you don't react to it, eat away. I'm just saying you don't have to eat it in order to get enough calories. I'm pretty sure I get at least 2000 calories a day if not more a lot of days and I haven't eaten dairy in years. Why are you having trouble getting calories?

I feel like what I eat doesn't have enough. just meat, fruit and veggies.
this is what I eat everyday in college
breakfast=berries with cinnamon
-lunch=salad with chick+olive oil
-dinner=chicken with salad
You just aren't eating enough. Here's an average day for me:
Breakfast: A smoothie with 2 bananas, a huge handful of pineapple, a huge handful of berries and usually some watermelon or some other type of fruit. I will fill the blender completely.
Lunch: 2-3 eggs and a large plate of veggies, usually half fermented stuff like kimchee or saurkraut and half a big salad with lots of calorie rich things like olives, avocado, sauces made from cashew and olive oil, etc.
Dinner: Steak, burgers or fish. A vegetable stir fry of some sort, or maybe a vegetable soup. Another large salad with more of what I had for lunch.
You need to eat more!

Do you think it's possible to eat fruit and cure candida? I don't even know if I have candida. I don't think I do. I just assume that everyone with acne has it to some degree.
At this point, I don't even know if I have candida! Probably. I mean I don't have burning yeast infections, but I do have a constant thick white discharge from my...you know. Sorry if TMI. And it's probe yeast. Had it for years, started when I was put on antibiotics (SHOCKER!) And it never went away. When I don't eat sugar my skin is clearer. I guess fruit or green smoothies are out for a while then, huh? I've been pumping my body with probiotics, but that's just not good enough if you have candida I guess. I don't even know what to do anymore. Feeling lost again. It's like, how do I know that i'm healing, if I am healing. How do I know that the spicy steak meat at college that I eat isn't just destroying my intestines?
I'm just hoping that once the candida is gone, the intestines just repair event-though some particles leak through. Little by little they heal I hope. Even if trace amounts of gluten got in your system. As long as you aren't eating slices of bread and pasta, I think and hope our bodies can handle it!
Oh, and I just ordered some anti-fungals Olive Leaf and Oregano Oil, plus I have starte eating cloves of garlic for breakfast with coconut oil. So, hopefully this wipes out the candida (if it's there). I just don't know how long to stay on this diet and if die off is die off. Like if my skin is getting worse, but it's just die off, It could possibly be die off for a year and I would never know. I guess I just have to have faith that it won't last long.

Just try go on a sugar free and fruit free diet for 2 weeks if you keep having acne its probably not that 🙂
So I went to Whole Foods and bought a bottle of Inner-Eco coconut kefir. Anyone heard of it or tried it? It's gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. and it has 100 billion CFUs in one serving (which is one tablespoon) with about 30 servings per bottle. Looks like it could be pretty good, my only concern is the lack of acidophilus, which is supposed to be one of the best probiotic strains. Oh well, it wasn't terribly expensive and I'm excited to try it.
In my experience, coconut kefir tends to have a lot of sugar in it. But if the one you found does not- I'd say to go for it- and you can fix the acidophilus problem by investing in a good pill form probiotic
I've tried that exact brand of probiotics and it does help with digestion, but it isn't enough alone to combat candida. I feel like I built up my probiotics for nothing, cause I still have acne and candida I'm pretty sure eventhough my direction is better. So u just have to wipe everything out wih antifungals and a strict paleo no fruit
Or sugar diet and then add probiotics back in. Or do antifungals and probiotics simultaneously, but I feel like that is pointless!
Oh and if you don't rotate your antifungals doesn't the candida become resistant and then you have a super unstoppable form of it?

crystalthelondonlover....I have never heard of candida becoming a super bacteria and becoming resistant. I have also heard, many times, medical literature discussing how the "candida epidemic" is much exaggerated and isn't necessarily as widespread and harmful as we all think. We all have candida- but some of us here have candida overgrowth. The symptoms of chronic candida overgrowth, the only type that I would even consider may become resistant, are pretty severe and obvious and only occur in individuals with severely compromised immune systems (AIDS, cancer, etc.)
Okay, so to answer your prayers- I would say to YES- do the paleo diet, but cut out all sugar for three months until you feel you are in recovery. From that point, slowly start integrating fruit back in and see how you feel. There is no reason that humans should not be able to consume small amounts of fruit once the gut is healed, unless one is allergic.
I would also suggest the product "candex" that many have had success with here on the forums. I tried a round myself, I didn't notice much of a difference, but I think I would have to take at least 2 bottles of the capsules because they did not last for very long.
The number one thing I recommend is including apple cider vinegar into the paleo diet. It is a master at defeating candida so it would be very useful for many reasons to use along with this regimen.
What about leaky gut and beans?
From what I've heard, you should not include beans until at least three months on Paleo. If you read the original book, The Paleo Solution, which outlines the medical data behind all this stuff, you will see that beans can be gut irritants and are especially a problem for those with leaky gut, or damaged gut lining.
