thanks for your reply. i bought b6 a while ago but so so so many people reported breakouts from it i got really worried and upon searching on google b6 and b12 were the vitamins that most commonly broke people out so i steered clear from them. how does b6 relate to hormonal acne (the positives?) also im curious when you break out worse? right before your period and clear up on your period? I've only been taking saw palmetto for about a week.. im a little worried now I'll break out >.< im curious why people might break out on saw palmetto..does it directly affect your hormones? i thought it just helped block inhibit dht (a lot of people suggested it to me for that reason). thats a bit confusing how one would have negative affects from that..
i think im so lost right now. i wish i could have my period 24/7 just so i could have a clear face.
the extreme is literally so extreme. right now 80% of my face is so so soft and perfect and clear, better than all my friends skin..it legit looks airbrushed. but i know in about a weeks time i will have my 1000s of little bumps, big painful pimples and lots of bumps and rough skin. i honestly cant believe how quickly it comes and goes. makes me wonder why that raise in some hormones or drop in another can honestly be that affecting and why it actually is so much to produce this acne kinda like theres a fine line between perfect skin and not so perfect skin. i get no other hormonal issues, never emotional, never have pains or headache, moody etc but seems like my hormones change that much to cause the acne. just doesnt make any sense -_-
I have read a lot that vitamin b6 does break out some people, supposedly pyrodixine is the one associated to that but p5p which is the form I'm taking seems to be ok. B6 is supposed to lower prolactin levels which at the same time could lower 5-AR activity. I break out just after my mid cycle, although I can have very mild spots before. I'm super clear while on my period, my skin just glows at that time, also much less oily as well. Saw palmetto can lower estrogen levels so if you are low on that side then it could probably get you more break outs and it does lowers DHT because I was shedding a bit my hair before saw palmetto but after taking it very little shedding, but I got neck acne in exchange
. May be get some of these vitamin levels tested?. I can tell you for sure that vitamin b6 does not break me out for sure. I'm very certain is helping because I get some spots on my chest when I break out and now very mild ones, it takes time to work. Supposedly 3 months to see a difference from what I read but I can already notice a difference after 2 months.
im a little worried to take saw palmetto now, im not sure if i should stop? its been about a week i think. my acne has pretty much remained its usual. im not sure what my hormone levels are as im on the pill and certainly not ready to get off diane until i can least get my face clear because facing the hell of getting off the pill :/ i suppose one might be able to work out my hormone levels by the behaviour of my acne? im fairly skinny though and dont get any other 'female' issues like cramps etc as mentioned. can saw palmetto really change your hormones that much? do you think maybe any breakouts for yourself might have been an IB? im so lost in this battle. not sure what to take. everything just seems dangerous. i might try b6 again after giving SP a go. i only take one sp pill a day but yeah havnt noticed any change better or for worse. knowing me and my luck i'll probably get worse.
what can one tell about hormonal levels if they're clear during their period week? like right now im on my 3-4th day but my periods are very short so even though i'll be on my sugar pills i wont actually get my period til about the 3rd day and only 3 day with an actual period. (does that say anything about my hormone levels do you think?) considering i dont get period side effects except for no acne (best days of my life .. how sad).
and my acne stays around all month but gets way worse about 2 or so weeks before my period. wish i knew what that meant and what i could do to work it out. considering my hormon levels went out of whack by themselves its so confusing as to what to do to get them back when i didnt even do anything to force them out of whack. if thats even what they are.
although nothing else could make me get acne relating around my period by hormones? food doesnt seem to affect me obviously. whether i ate chocolate or a carrot my acne stays the same (note- i only eat healthy food thats for sure though, but abot 8 months ago i tested if food did anything to me, spent a week eating crap food and nothing changed) kinda wish it did, would know i was doing something to help. im curious about B6. so which hormone is it actually affecting? im b12 deficiant (not sure how that happened considering what i eat) but yeah i was nervous because b12 and b6 were known to break people out.. thanks for your opinions by the way
I'll spare too much background and just say that I know DHT is most of my problem...terrible cystic acne and hair loss began at the same time and have persisted. It's like all of a sudden, at 20.5 years old, something turned on in my body and told it to make more testosterone (though a hormone panel said my testosterone is normal), convert more testosterone, or be more sensitive to DHT! I'm coming up on a year since my hair and skin went so downhill, and while my hair looks okay, I've still got the red scars on my face and receding hairline to prove it...
I decided to try and inhibit DHT with 320mg of saw palmetto a day. My hair chilled out a little bit and I saw fast, dramatic improvement in my skin. (Also, my boobs increased a full cup size, which was a lot of fun I will say.) I was very happy, even though I was gaining some weight.
But about 3.5 weeks in, I was noticing that my mind felt really cloudy. It is hard to explain, but I totally understand what it means to have brain fog now. I have never felt so out of sorts. After 4 weeks, I went off the saw palmetto (and sadly, my boobs are back to normal).
It's been proposed by some that inhibiting 5-alpha reductase (type I or II or both, I'm not sure) may impair cognition. I sure can't explain specifics, but 5-AR and DHT do have a role in cognitive processing. So it appears that some people, what percent I sure can't say, may experience this god-awful brain fog from inhibiting 5-AR. Some men who've taken Propecia for male pattern baldness have complained of fogginess.
Mine subsided once I stopped taking the saw palmetto, but sometimes I feel like I'm still not as sharp as I should be.
Just wanted to share my experience. I'm looking deeper into the connection between diet and acne now (reading The Clear Skin Diet), and hopefully through eating and eliminating the right things and supplementation I can improve my situation.
have you tried diet before?
I'm definitely not sure what to do about saw palmetto. might give it more time but i like my brain >.<
this is such a lose lose battle. never a win win :/
how is your acne? is it better with your period ? are you on bc?
If you're clear during your period it could be a few things. 1. You have low levels of estrogen and testosterone during this time. 2. You should have high levels of progesterone during this time.
So, you should really get your hormones tested mid-month and also during your period to see what's going on.
It could be you need more progesterone or you have too many androgens mid-month.
I had this same issue and my hormone levels were all in range, so I don't know what to tell you. Diet didn't work for me. In fact, it made me worse, actually. I believe it lowered my estrogen since I had no carbs, but I'm not sure why that happened.
Anyway, I'm using topicals now because I'm done with AA's like spiro. They gave me ulcers. Also, SP can cause pancreatitis and liver disorders in addition to ulcers. There are case reports of the liver/pancreas incidents.
We have the answer for that: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3207614?dopt=AbstractPlus

Lots of people have reported gaining weight from saw palmetto, so instead I am taking stinging nettle. I am a girl so the last thing I want is to get fat! Anyway a few days in me and my friend austin are seeing some slight improvements. I think this is going to go well but I am not taking stinging nettle alone. Anyway testosterone isn't bad for acne just the conversion to DHT. Stinging nettle is said to increase testosterone but is a DHT inhibitor. I need to do some more research on this conversion but for now I will take stinging nettle for all its benefits like losing weight, speeding hair growth, reducing DHT levels, and reducing insulin resistance! I love how 1 herb can do all that. It's quite lovely I must say.

*Moderator edit - Read the board rules!* i hate when someone "shouts" how people should stop being obsessed over acne and "get a life". we are not here to get some tips on how to get a life, we are here to get clear skin! if u cant help then dont respond.////
the amount of test converted to DHT while training/weightlifting is practically zero.

I think the whole acne being genetics thing is bull shit because both my parents don't have acne and never did as a teenager. Why is it that the number of individuals with acne has increased over the years? Adult acne as well has increased which was once thought to only be an issue in adolescents. Also america has the highest rate of acne individuals. It's not genetics and fools who believe that are just making excuses for themselves when really acne is a symptom of an unhealthy, out of balanced body. A sign of an unhealthy living. We americans had dun fucked up and expose ourselves to many chemicals, processed foods, and free radicals. We're gross and indulge ourselves in crap every day. I can't even drink a water bottle without exposing my body to xenoestrogens.
So no 5-alpha reductase = no DHT? Sweet
YES, but that doesn't mean no acne, it just means no sebum oil production from DHT, for some people that is their sole creator of acne, but not for many. Food allergies are probably one of the biggest factors for all, and it would be wise to start researching the acne-diet connection.

I have VERY oily skin, I have to apply powder makeup every hour so I don't look greasy. I also have to watch what I wear because I sweat through my clothes, So I wouldn't mind reducing sebum at all! I am also trying to change my diet. Considering going vegan because I am so tired of my breakouts, I think I could be insulin resistant. Another reason why I wanted to try stinging nettle. I might have a food allergy, and If I do I am almost sure its from milk. I try my best to stay away from dairy but I'll continue to research possibilities. I wouldn't mind targeting acne from multiple angles.
Has anyone tried a detox for acne? Like to jump start a new diet? I am considering, but hesitant on it. I'd like to see what you guys have to say about it here on acne.org!

Diet was the only thing that cleared me for good, and yes I did a complete 180 on my diet, not only did it clear my acne 100%, it also gave me more energy and a happier more positive outlook on life. I eat 80% raw, fruits/veggies/seeds, and then 20% cooked chicken, salmon, or other fish (I use coconut oil to cook with). It was hard at first to change diet because I knew nothing about raw diets, but after about 1 month I got the hang of it. The main problem people have in switching diets is they don't eat enough and feel sick because they don't eat enough. When doing raw you have to eat a lot, and make sure you are getting the calories the body needs. I no longer consume dairy, sugars, gluten, any processed foods, or oils. The only thing I cook is steamed veggies and sauted fish/chicken with fresh herbs and seasonings. You can still have a sex life trust me, I thought before I was always going to be single because if I had sex I would get zits, it just isn't true anymore, not after I found out what caused me inflammation and acne, which was food.
Well luckily for me, I love chicken and fish very much! Along with green vegetables. I am going to take your advice, Hey I will probably lose the 15 pounds I've been wanting to lose, I was also thinking about getting a gluten free cookbook and found one on amazon with good reviews. Anyway, I think anyone who says food does not cause acne is so naive! Food is everything! The fuel to our bodies! Like sticking cheap regular gas into an SUV. Gotta feed our body that good stuff that isn't loaded with all those preservatives, chemicals and hormones! My sister grows fresh vegetables in her yard, I should go pick some up from her house! Thanks for the information! I'll let ya know how the diet works for me!

Good luck, and remember to eat at least 2000 calories in your diet, just google search how many calories are in the fruits/veggies you eat. I eat a lot, A LOT of fruits. I'll easily make two fruit salads a day that are like 700 calories each, I am actually trying to put on a few pounds myself at the moment.
Gonna bring this thread back alive, because I really need help..
So right now i'm trying out the digestive enzymes called Candex to see if that will help my acne. I'm not sure if my acne is caused by Candida or hormones. But in another 2 weeks, If I don't see the results i want to see, im thinking my acne could be hormonal.
I'm a 26 year old male, and i do have acne prone and very oily skin..
I am considering of taking Saw Palmetto for about a month, and see what happens, but before i even do that..i have a question. If Saw Palmetto does help prevent oil production, and help prevent acne, do we still have to keep using it for it to be effective?
I would like to add something relevant to this discussion.
Multiple orgasms within a short period of time appear to be the sole trigger for my acne. I have become convinced of this after many weeks of testing. Acne appears like clockwork within three days of excessive sexual activity. If I abstain, my face starts to clear within the same amount of time (three days). If I continue to abstain, I will clear up entirely.
Now, before someone jumps in and says masturbation does not cause acne, or even helps acne, I'd like you to consider that everyone is different. I'd also like you to consider that orgasms cause a large spike in DHT, of which I can experience the symptoms in real-time. Only minutes after an orgasm, the physiological changes manifest themselves in the form of profuse redness, itchiness, irritation, micro-bumps, and oiliness. The itchiness occurs in very specific spots of which I make note. In three days those very same spots will erupt in acne. This verifiable and repeatable.
I know I am not alone in my findings because many many others have tried to come forward with this connection only to be shot down by detractors who are either in self denial (due to frustration over their own lack of self-control) or simply lack of understanding, because they do not suffer from the same trigger that we do.
In any case. I am extremely grateful that I finally discovered the "why" after over a decade of dealing with acne. Good luck to you all.
My idea is that zinc is essential for skin/immune development during puberty. Masturbation/sex way too early during puberty when DHT is at its highest causes zinc loss and thus acne.
I don't think so. I've been supplementing 75-100mg zinc per day + copper. Like I said, the negative effects on the skin are immediate for me. I don't know what the exact cause is, but it's not due to zinc deficiency.

If your zinc levels are on the high side already than supplementing zinc will spike up your testosterone levels even more. 100mg zinc can cause severe toxicity. You only need 10-15mg per day.

The point being it's not a zinc deficiency that's triggering my acne, per your theory. It's also not due to excess testosterone seeing as zinc supplementation, stimulation, (without orgasm) and weightlifting has no effect my acne. I'm not saying those can't be triggers for other people, but seeing as the physiological process of orgasm causes very specific fluctuations in certain hormones such as Prolactin and DHT, it's not far fetched to consider some people may have an adverse reaction to those compounds that ultimately manifest as acne.

Masturbation/sex/orgasm/ejaculation is not the only thing that ramps up DHT production. High fatty diets, high insulin, dairy/milk, processed/refined foods, and others also create pathways to higher DHT production, and does so in a different fashion in each individual. This is why some can ejaculate once a day and never have and adverse affects, while someone could do it once a week and it would be enough DHT production to cause acne, same thing works with other food/diet routines. For me ejaculation raises my DHT production 10x, however I never have any issues with food, as in, food never makes me breakout.
There are ways to help combat DHT production, and I would recommend these to all acne patients.

You have got to be kidding with that link?
Hardly a scientific study that proves this is the cause.
Soy? Yeah okay, wouldn't take that even if you paid me. There are a lot of negative effects with soy.

You own statement proves that acne isn't a one glove fits all situation. Does the above also account for women with acne? Last time i check they do not ejaculate and have very low testosterone.

if you are reading this, you're probably not since you are fully cured,
i would like to thank you.
guess many here are in the same boat; that DHT srsly screwed us up.
Nonetheless is there any regimen that you can suggest or are following to tip us?
Saw Palmetto
Stinging nettle
Green Tea extract
Zinc
isoflavone
How should we go about regulating these supplements, like consuming all at one go?
Thank you.

For awhile I've been taking 50mg zinc before i go to bed and i would have to say it has cleared my acne up 30%ish. I had higher hopes for that, but I'm still going to stick with taking it daily. Ive taken beta sitosterol and saw palmetto in pills and lets just say it messed up my sex drive for a good 6 months. Who would've guessed you needed dht to actually function in that department. I'm now going to attempt the whole topical route. One product is called (Zix) which is actually for hair loss and i'm thinking why couldn't it be applied to your face! In my time of boredom i found a webpage that has a face cream that has beta sitosterol in it and it says it actually blocks dht in the skin. The name of that company is Plexy Labs and the product is called 'Nothing to Hide'. Does anyone know if they are reputable and if you think it is worth a try?? Any other supplements you would recommended would be greatly appreciated.
