O.K. just wanted to post how I'm doing on here as kind of a way of making a journal entry.
So I've read up as much as I can about vitamin a, previous toxicity cases, the liver and it's function, etc. Man, I've learned a lot.
To the poster who said that the Zinc I was taking was probably helping prevent any further damage from vitamin a toxicity you are right! Zinc provides binding proteins (RBP) in which the vitamin a latches on to when it's released from the liver. People start to develop toxicity symptoms whenever the vitamin a outnumber the RBP's, and the free, unattached retinol is what really causes the damage causing increased cell differiantion and oxidation and all kinds of abnormal things. And interestingly enough I noticed that after I stopped taking the Zinc my symptoms got worse and my lips felt really dry and flakey.
So I've grappled with the thought of why me? Why can others take the same or more dosage than I did and still be ok? Here's a list of contributing factors in which I believe made me very vulnerable to this.....
-I don't drink alcohol at all (Alcohol is known to deplete the body of its Vit. A stores)
-I don't smoke at all (Smoking is known to deplete the body of its Vit. A stores)
-I seldom drink beverages with caffeine (coffee, cola, etc.)
-I'm 5'8, 145 lbs. with little to no body fat (I've read that bigger, heavier people a) need more vitamin a & b)can store more vitamin a)
-I eat a pretty healthy, balanced diet, so I prolly obtain adequate amount of vit. and minerals through there
-I have a pretty regular, adequate sleep schedule (usually 7-8 hours a night)
-I took no other drugs that are known to deplete body of vitamins (antiacids, laxatives)
-I was pretty much done growing @ the time I started regularly taking them (18 1/2) so my body's demand for the vitamin was prolly much lower than previous years
-Not sure if this last factor is a concern or not, but I took Tetracyline 500mg 2X a day for about 6 months when I was 16-17. I've read that long-term intake of antibiotics can harm your liver, but again not sure if that played a role in this.
So taking all of this into account it's much more easy for me to comprehend how I came down with this condition. Just wanted to share this in case anyone was interested.
Hmm most of this I don't quite buy, feels like you are reading side effects into symptoms (if I did that, I would have everything going!). Its not the way to progress. If you really think you have this, simply hop to your docs and have a blood test, as you would need this really anyway. Some of the previous information posted is incorrect as well, so its just a confusing thread and based on possibly fault assumptions. Get yourself checked out!
Yeah, I didn't know how too much vit A could be such and issue. I had a derm give me a bunch of samples of retin-A micro, but she didn't tell me now to use it. I was using it sometimes 4 or 5 times a day. When the samples finally ran out (took a long time) I went to my regular Doctor for a prescription of it. He asked if I was planning to become pregnant, I told him no and he gave me my script.
When we decided to start a family my regular Doctor told me to talk to my OBGYN. When he found out I was using Retin-A-micro he freaked out!!!
He told me I should be using two forms of birth control and don't dare try to get pregnant yet. Well I didn't know, no one had ever told me. He told me it would take 3 months to get out of my system before we even thought about trying for a baby.
It would really be nice if Doctor's told you more about the drugs they are handing you.

Who are you to tell me what I have, how I feel, what I see? You don't know me, and if you did you would know that I'm honest in almost all that I do. Anyone can sit behind a computer screen and attack someone else's feelings and experiences. Anyone.
And if you're going to call someone out on inaccurate information please provide necessary corrections along with references. If not, don't post anything. If you would like the list of books, articles, medical journals and reports, websites, etc. in which I derived my information from I'd be more than happy to share them with you.
I would also like to point out your clear lack of compassion for others. Compassion is not something we are born with, it is a learned trait. Some people have a deep knowledge of compassion and others don't. Although somebody might be going through something you've never experienced before, you still have to acknowledge their feelings, their thoughts, their struggles no matter how farfatched it may seem to an outsider. Not surprisingly, that trait is a rare one in such an individualistic society such as the U.S. I love this country to death, but we pride ourselves on putting ourselves #1 first and foremost....no matter who we have to put down to there.
^ Same here, minus taking vitamin A. In fact, I was influenced by your posts (and others) to go off of topicals and try the water only method since last February/March and I have the same problem with dead skin buildup now. I'm not sure what the problem is or what to do about it. Like I said, I've never taken vitamin A before and I'm only now starting to eat more fruits and vegetables every day (for other reasons). So, I'll probably only now be getting more vitamin A from the carrots.
I have been taking zinc since January and am down to 25mg a day. I believe it helps with my inflamed acne. I tried going off of it last month, but started getting some inflamed acne and am now back on it. I am around the same age/weight/height as you. I don't smoke/drink/drink soda and exercise/eat healthy/8-9 hours of sleep, so we're pretty much in the exact same boat here. The only missing link here is the vitamin A supplementation.
Has your dead skin buildup decreased over time or has it remained pretty constant? Also, did you experience dead/dry skin only in your facial region?
No, it has remained pretty constant. Yes, it only occurs on my face. I'm wondering if I/we should at least be using soap on our faces like we do on the rest of our body. Just a quick, casual wash. I'm too paranoid now to try though, haha.
Hmmm...for me it has fortuanetly decreased over time (due to my vitamin a levels going back down to normal). and for me the dry/dead skin was not just centralized to my face...my neck, my arms, my legs, my back all used to get kinda dry and flakey after a real hot shower or if I scratched them with my nail, or if I rubbed some dark fabric across various parts of my body I got like a white, powdery type residue on the fabric (dead skin). And over time all of this has gotten much better.
Since for you the dead skin buildup has remained constant and centralized to just your face perhaps you have a condition such as dermatitis in which can be helped dramatically (if not erradicated) by medications prescribed by a dermatologist. Whatever it may be I hope that you find a solution in the near future!
I just thought i'd update:
Since my vitamin a, zinc, and b5 overdose I have been doing incredibly bad. My skin is always dry/oily, I have what seems like bile deposits near the bridges of my nose, my acne is still forming(not many actual pimples), and my hair is still rather thin.
I am positive that my liver has taken too much damage and it has now been over 6 months and my symptoms have not subsided. I am incredibly worried about my health and I hope that I didn't achieve cirrhosis. I am going to the doctor soon and I am determined to get professional help.
I was desperate and tried Milk Thistle for my liver and it worked incredibly for about 2 weeks because I noticed that my liver was not spewing out bile through my skin anymore.... but of course that stopped working.
I urge anyone taking Vitamin excessively to stop.
I am worried for my life at this point. Liver damage is serious. I regret not marking my dosage and the day at which I began such a stupid regime. Wish me luck guys....

Actually, assuming an ob-gyn knows all about a topical retin-a product is probably a really bad bet. He hears 'retin-a' and thinks accutane pills.
There's probably not enough retin-a in retin-a micro to cause issues even if you used it while pregnant (but I admit it would be stupid to risk it).
The levels drop in *days* after you stop using *accutane* pills, never mind about topicals. The pills are stupidly more powerful. Most of the reason for leaving 2-3 months before getting pregnant with the pills are to do with making sure you're not *already* pregnant and because the pills are so much more drastic.
What an unfortunate occurrence! It's one of the reasons I stay away from fat-soluable vitamins unless they're in my food naturally.
I'm slowly learning that unless you're blatantly deficient to begin with, vitamins and supplements are a scary thing to dwell into unless instructed by a doctor.
At least you learned a lesson?? Hopefully, things will normalize for you sooner than later! Good luck XP

I'm sorry to here that dude. While I don't think my health condition is as serious as your's might be, I too am dissapointed in my lack of progress in the past year. I would've thought by now that my skin and body would be back to normal, but its not. I hope to hear back from you with an update if you ever see this message. Good luck to you.
Glad I found this post, hopefully people still reading, I think i have overdose on vitamin A.
I stopped taking accutane 10 months ago. All seemed well. I ended up taking it over 2 years, but not as you might think. I was to take a years supply, but did so well I only took 3 a week. So it lasted alot longer dermatologist had no issue with this. Take less at once but of course it lasts longer.
I thought I was fine when i went off of it, i had blood tests in the begining, but i didnt get one for a year, so i stopped on my own. So i started taking vitamin A supplement of 5000iu, recently and for the last year skin was great. I was put on doxy as well this past april for eye problem, so Im not sure if this has anything to do with it. I took doxy for 2 months around the time the vitamin A toxicity started so now im worried the combination damaged my liver, or vitamin A is finally catching up and being stored to much? I dont know if anyone can comment it would be much appreciated.
Regardless at the moment and up until i started the doxy in april I started having more difficult vitamin A toxicity symptoms. I started getting the headache, hairdresser noticed dry scalp, tired whenever i took it i wanted to take a nap for 2 hours. I never noticed this before to that extent but just lately. At the moment i cant take more then 2000iu without the headache and sleepiness setting in. I tried a 1500iu dose and non of the symptoms of tiredness and headache, so again i dont know what this means? How can i take a low dose, but a bit higher and i get headache, sleepy?
I dont know what this means but im due to get a blood test soon.
I drink occasionally and dont smoke.
Vitamin A really helped my face, if i could take 2500iu i would be fine. I have extreme complex skin that gets very oily and can dry out quickly.
If anyone can comment on my symptoms it would be greatly appreciated.
Beyond that for liver symptoms im not sure if i have any, i dont have jaundice or anything, or alot of other things listed.
But my symptoms when taking vitamin A the last few weeks began to be fatigue after taking vitamin a, like literally wanting to go to bed for an hour or two, dont know what that means, I would take my vitamin and want to go for a nap, headaches just started recently. My biggest concern is i take sleeping pills for sleep, and i have been complaining the last few months they last to long, i noticed reading online for sleeping pills if you have a liver problem take less dosage because the liver regulates how quickly medicine gets out of your system and since i have been complaining the past few months it suddenly lasts so long and wont exit my system when i need to wake up, basically it seems to stay in my system a few hours longer then typical, that really scared me.
This last pargaraph is basically what has happened and what has me worried. If anyone can comment.
I really dont know what to make of it but i stopped taking vitamin A. I did feel my energy skyrocket the day i didnt take it, im not sure if it should work that quickly or not, but i will report back if that was just one good day. And of course no headaches at the moment only happen when i take vitamin A.
Just to update and bring back a dead thread...
I feel better in regards to my health and I have seen some symptoms subside, but my skin is still incredibly thin/dry/oily at the same time. My hair which used to be an amazing thing....is completely gone.... it's as thin as ever and I have decided to just shave it for a while now until I ever hopefully see some improvement.
Just today I was doing lots of research and came to the realization:
1) I took mino for a year!!!!!
2) I took 5grams of b5 for nearly 6 months!!!!
3) I don't even know how much vitamin A I took... but it was over 80,000UI for a good 3-4 months and then followed with CLO for about a year.
WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!??!?!??!!?
God....clueless teenager man.........................I was as healthy as a kid could ever be.
Only thing I am taking now is Biotin... about 2-3mg's a day in hope that it can fix some of my hair/skin problems. Even then... I am still iffy about taking ANY supplement...so I am not sure how much longer im going to keep up with the biotin.
The most obvious psychological symptom i've developed is irritability.... I explode at the smallest things.....its honestly ridiculous and hard to deal with... it causes my stress levels to sky rocket.
I took much more vitamin A than that when I was in college. I took 50,000 IU along with 50 mg of zinc for almost a year before I started getting headaches. It worked great for my acne so instead of going off it I just didn't take any for 2 weeks then went on a reduced dose of $25,000 IU. I kept up with the zinc. After a few months the headaches came back. I went off for 2 more weeks and went on 10,000 IU. Just 2 months in on that I got headaches. Got t the point where I couldn't even take a 5,000 IU pill wiythout getting a headache. Beta carotene had the same side effect. I did not notice any oither side effects from vitamin A. I lost some hair due to normal male pattern baldness.

hum that is very interesting...
How long has it been since your last dose? It took me a while before the symptoms started showing up. I never experienced any headaches. I also did take zinc for a good amount of time... but made sure to always keep it under 50mg. I still can't believe you had no side effects after a year of 50,000UI of vitamin A.... I can assume it was in it's retinol form correct?
A naturopath put me on 100,000 I.U. of Vitamin A palmitate a day. I stoped after 3 months when i started noticing toxicity symptoms. Conventional doctors and dermatologist confirmed it was vitamin a toxicity. My symtoms were/are ridges on my fingernails, cracked crusty peeling lips, skin turned slightly yellowish with some eurethma on my face, very oily face and flaky, severe depression, and...I think that was it. I havent taken it for roughly 11 months now and I'm near recovery. My lips are fine again, only a couple nails have ridges in them, my face is getting better (very slowly), skin color is returned/returning to normal, and I'm not very depressed at all (just frustrated). I read that the average time to recover from vitmain a toxicity is 10-18 months. I believe the source was the national libraries of medicine. It's correct that Zinc is neccesary to produce retinol binding protein, which helps both store and remove vitamin a from the liver. Protein is also recommend to help produce retinol binding proteins. Its true that vitamin a toxicity will go away in a week or two, but only if its from beta carotine, not synthetic vitamin a, which accumulate in the liver regardless of how close to toxic levels you are. Synthetic vitamin a also has a much high percetage of absorption then beta carotene.
Just a little update guys.
Things are slightly getting better... or so the optimistic in me wants to say. My face is still pretty messy, still showing signs of erythma and flaking. My lips are still not doing too well. Oh and something that I never touched upon... I never realized just how much psychological damage the vitamin A did. I struggled/struggling with depression but it is getting better. In addition, I am very irritable and get angry way too easily. My hair... poor poor hair, is still very thin and doesn't look it's best but the shedding has slowed down. It's been over a year since i've stopped taking Vitamin A and I can definitely still feel it's effects.
Oh and If someone could help me with this.... I will send a 1,0000 thank yous your way. After almost every meal I eat, my face will get really dry, and almost itchy... it's a really wierd feeling. It's almost like my face gets very inflammed 30 minutes after a meal and then slowly subsides. It's is very uncomfortable and I don't understand why it happens.
How are you doing Yepican?
Oh and does anyone know if the Vitamin A added in milk contribute to my problem? Should I keep off ALL added Vitamin A's even though they are in such low quantities?

The vitamin A toxicity itself would have stopped within a week or so after you stopped taking the supplement.
Right now, you need normal levels of vitamin A.
You need vitamin A to live. You absolutely should not be keeping off vitamin A.
The carotene forms of vitamin A are not well absorbed, so a mixture of carotenes and premade vitamin A (liver) are usually desirable.
Its true that vitamin a toxicity will go away in a week or two, but only if its from beta carotine, not synthetic vitamin a, which accumulate in the liver regardless of how close to toxic levels you are. Synthetic vitamin a also has a much high percetage of absorption then beta carotene.
That's not true. And you can't get toxicity from carotene form anyway.
The toxicity only kicks in when the stores are full. and then the liver can't pull it out of the bloodstream anymore, then the levels go too high in the blood and then you get poisoned. But as soon as you stop taking too much, the levels drop in the liver and the toxicity ceases.
The effects/symptoms of the toxicity take a year or so to subside, but the toxicity itself stops very soon after you stop taking excess amounts.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around your last statement. The symptoms of toxicity are caused by the toxicity so if the toxicity stopped soon after then the symptoms would to. It all depends on your definition of "toxicity" and "symptoms". Toxicity is a sort of poisoning your body takes on and it causes a bunch of altered synthesizes and processes to occur, as well as (I hope not, but possibly)DNA damage and certain stages of mutation. If you are speaking of toxicity as in an elevated level of free vitamin A in the blood... then yeah sure it subsides because your liver and remarkably even your kidneys and other organs can store the extra vitamin A.
When someone is describing their symptoms pertaining to a toxicity it is quite obvious they are speaking about the altered physiological effects that that toxicity still has on them. I'm not sure if you're trolling/bored/ or just slightly misinformed. In addition, having your liver and other organs store all that vitamin A can cause a bunch of changes in metabolism(no proof but it makes sense).
I still feel toxic.
It's okay to take 10,000 IU vitamin A from cod liver oil, right? I don't really eat anything that is loaded with beta carotene. Actually, I'm more worried about zinc. Is it okay to take 50 mg a day? I eat a lot of eggs, sea salt, meat. Should I take a day off from the zinc every other day or should I chop up the pill and take 1/2 or 1/4 a day?
Also, does anyone know how much zinc interferes with absorption of calcium?

10,000 IU is the Upper Limit for a female. If you ever eat liver/butter then you will be over. The beta carotene form is not in any way harmful, it's the liver form (retinoid) that accumulates and then poisons. The beta carotene form is converted into retinoid by the body as needed.

I believe it's mostly the other way around, calcium interferes with zinc; the calcium just swamps the zinc out, as does magnesium. They use the same receptors for absorption, and you would normally eat a lot more calcium. But it's not an all or nothing thing.
(p.s. if you never have carotenes you may hit problems, the eyes use carotenes to form the chemicals to detect light and the retinoids aren't exactly the same chemicals, there's a long term risk of blindness; the green leafy vegetables have carotenes in and are thought to be good for the retina for this reason.)

Alright I'll definitely cut down on the vitamin A. I'll take 2 capsules a day instead (5,000IU). So if I'm taking calcium, magnesium, and zinc, if they interfere with each other, will the excess just pass or do I have to worry about it accumulating somewhere it shouldn't? I usually take one 500 mg magnesium and 2 500 mg calciums (which I split it). I am about 90% sure that I am either deficient in calcium or vitamin D so that is probably the most important for me to absorb.
The zinc should be taken at a different time of day from the calcium (and to a lesser extent magnesium). They should always be taken on a full stomach (particularly the zinc).
Your magnesium and calcium seem to be well above the recommended levels.
Vitamin D is thought to be largely (but not completely!!!) non toxic, you can take about 2,000 IU per day without worry, indefinitely. If you go above (say) 20,000 IU then eventually you might hit toxicity, but probably not (according to experiments that have been done); till you get to over about 50,000 IU. Going out in the midday sun in your swimming costume for ten minutes gives you about 10,000 IU.
To get some idea how much vitamin D you need to kill yourself, most people could take 100 pills of say 400 IU each and every day, for a few *months*, before having any chance of hitting toxicity; a really vast amount, compared to how much you would normally get. It's the *average* dose over a few months that matters.
Vitamin D toxicity almost never happens (but is serious when it does), vitamin A toxicity is really easy to get, even from common foods; but most foods don't have much or even any vitamin D in; people get most of it from the sun... but then people don't always go out in the sun and then...
But yeah, you should probably reduce your calcium and magnesium a bit.
