I have to admit that using B5 for about 6 months had finally made my hair feel brittle so I stopped using it a couple of weeks ago. I didn't lose any hair, but it definitely felt more dry and weak. Since I stopped using it, my hair feels normal again. The trade off is that I had a bad breakout last week and my face is not clear anymore. So I read about panthethine today, supposedly a safe alternative to B5, and I will be trying it for the next 4-5 months along with fish oil, zinc, and B-100 complex. I will report its effects here in the next few weeks.

Just updating, my second day on Panthethine. Seems to still have the drying affects. i won't continue the BP in the regimen for now because i don't want to overdo. I gently wash with Basis sensitive skin bar and rinse/ pat dry. i did the bp last night and now i have a little flaking on my nose/ no biggie. So far i don't feel it's necessary with the Panthethine... oh i just realized today marks my first week  I can't get over the rapid results. I just pray pray it lasts.. well i'm about to take my last dose for the day and turn in.

I started on Pantothenic acid yesterday (10/22). I'm taking 10g (500mg x 20) spread out over 5 doses. It's the end of second day and I do notice less oilier cheeks. Nose and forehead have yet to show noticeable results.

I'm 30 yrs old and I've been battling with acne since I was 16. There have been some periods that were completely clearer than others even when I was not taking any medication. I have been on 2 rounds of Accutane.

Last couple of months have been pretty bad so I'm giving B5 a shot - I would rather not go back on Accutane given its effects on the liver.

Right now, I have 4-5 breakouts (1 big, 1 medium, 1 medium-subsiding, 2 small). I'm looking forward to seeing the results from B5. I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

Anyone who wants to see before / after progress pictures, I'm taking them.

I learned that they're really important by going to bodybuilding forums ... I was always depressed because I didn't remember what I looked like before I gained 40 lbs, then a month ago or so I found an old picture of myself that I must have never posted on my camera, and I felt great about my progress!

I will be doing the same with my B5 megadosing, I took a progress picture yesterday, taking one tommorrow, then in three days from now, then in a week, then in two weeks, then in 2 months or at certain intervals to see how it goes.

I will be stopping after a month maybe a month and a half if it doesn't work though, as this stuff isn't cheap.

If you're really going to try B5 you have to give it more than 1 month.

Most people told me when it works acne is gone in two weeks.

My acne isn't bad enough to be bothered with it if it doesn't have said miraculous results ... so I'm only giving it a month.

Not posting pictures today, I got sick two days ago and it's the worst cold I can remember .. so I dont exactly look great + my diet (bodybuilding diet) has gone to shit the last two days ... not to mention I've drank alot of sugar (orange juice)

Ehh just the time eh? My body needs all it can get to fight this latest breakout and I get sick :/

When I first started taking B5 my acne almost cleared up after a week and I was COMPLETELY clear after 2 weeks. I guess it depends on the severity of your acne, I've heard it takes 3 months for some. I'm back on B5 temporarily, I started taking it a few days ago until my panthethine arrives and it has cleared me up again. It's relieving to know that I've found an otc solution that works within a matter of a COUPLE of days, so I'll never have acne for important events again.

I started taking pantothenic acid powder about a week ago, at first for about two days it was great, no oil production where I usually got it, and no new spots. Then I started getting a few new spots and now its pretty bad.

I've heard people say that it could cause purging, firstly how would I know if it is purging, and secondly how long does the purging last for, usually?

I'm going to keep using it as it stops the oil I used to get, but its becoming pretty depressing looking at my skin at the minute.

Awesome! :surprised:

My acne wasn't very bad before, typically mild and once in awhile I'd have great breakouts that would bring my to moderate, so I hope my results will be as good as yours seem to be.

I just took 5G Pantothenic Acid, started my 10G days yesterday but I'm very sick (cold) so I dont know how that will affect recovery. At the moment it doesn't seem to be doing a TON, other than my skin is very very dry most times, and I've been peeling around the areas where I had a massive breakout. Moisturizer covers up the peeling, though. Right now I'm getting spots and losing them at a highly volatile right, seemingly like I've never had before, one day a spot will be there and then it will disappear and another one will appear near it. Kind of irritating but I guess I can't complain. Will take progress pictures today despite how crappy I'm feeling due to being sick.

B5 works! I have tried every type of cleanser and nothing has been as effective as B5. I have mild to moderate acne. I've used b5 off and on for 2 years. Through experimenting, dosage and brand are the two most important things. I started with the GNC brand and was taking about 4 grams a day and it was very effective. Then I switched to the Vitamin Shoppe brand because it was a lot cheaper. Big mistake!! My acne progressively got worse so I started increasing the dose to 6-7 grams a day. No improvement. I decided that it had to be the brand so I bought some more GNC brand and I saw improvement again but still my skin wasn't completely clear. Then, I decided to switch to the TwinLab brand. Twinlab works awesome. I also bumped my dosage up to 10grams and took a b-complex. I took 5 pills 4 times a day with food. After about 3 weeks my skin was completely clear, probably the best it has been in my life. Then the side effects came.... I started becoming extremely tired all the time and I had this continuous buzzing in my head like I drank too much caffiene. I also became anxious and mildly depressed. This lasted for weeks. I figured it had to be the massive amounts of B5, my body couldn't handle it. I immediately cut back to 7.5 grams and then 5 grams over the course of a week. I started feeling back to normal soon after. I then cut it down to 3 grams a day and that is where I have been for last 3 months and my skin is clear now.

My opinion is that in order for B5 to be effective you have to load it your system. Try working your way up to 10grams a day but do that for only about 1 month or 2. Once you have sufficient levels in your system, you can drop the dosage significantly and it will still be effective.

Hope this helps!

I was on accutane about 2 1/2 years ago , after a horrible initial breakout my skin did indeed dry up and clear. I discontinued after it got toooo expensive to continue.. My skin stayed relatively clear for a period but i began to get cystic acne and very oily again. I did not know you could take accutane weekly for maintenance .. Thanks for the info and i will contact my dermatologist again about it... ;)

I recently dug up a magazine page I had.

It makes since too. Since, 10mg once per week of Accutane makes 1.42mg per day. The minimum required for continual clearing of mild to moderate acne is estimated at about 1.5mg per day of Isotretinoin (Accutane). Price on 10mg capsule are cheap especially after the first 1 or 2 months after taking each day. When you change to once per week 52 capsules cover you a whole year ;)

SELF magazine (not sure what month but I have the actual page & page number) but I think was in 2007. The article said quote:

Page 116: Tried Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Tretinoin cream, oral antibotics? "NOT WORKING FOR YOU?"

"A near-cure. Most docs agree isotretinoin(or Accutane), which decreases oil production, is the answer to hard-to-treat acne. After 4 to 5 months on the drug, most patients go into permanent remission, says Sumayah Jamal,M.D., a dermatologist in NYC. Moderate acne can benefit too:"Instead of the typical dose of 50 to 80mg, I'll prescribe 10mg per day, then wean it to 10mg a week." Dr. Shultz says. But success has a price. Miscarriage and birth defects are risks. (Women on the drug must use two forms of birth control, plus take a pregnancy test each month). Sun Sensitivity is too, so a sunscreen with SPF30 is a must--a habit we should all follow anyway!

Good to hear - I started off with GMC brand a few days ago.

I've been on B5 for 5 days now, and have been sick for 4 days :(

Does B5 have adverse affects on your immune system?

Typically I kick colds like they're nothing, and outbreaks of acne only last a week before they start clearing up, but my latest outbreak and my cold don't seem to be letting up... Both are directly correlated with the strength of your immune system, no?

I'll keep on plugging along with it ... hopefully it gets better :/

(BTW, I realize 5 days is not long enough to test B5. But this cold and my outbreak not fading at all kind of worries me.)

Actually, research shows the common cold can last up to 2 weeks. Beyond that they say it could be an allergy. If not gone within 2 weeks go to a doctor. It might be a bacteria and require antibiotics like Doxycycline 200mg per day (100mg twice a day with food). It will also help your acne a little if anything.

I understand that a cold can last two weeks, but I was wondering if B5 makes your immune system weaker?

I typically kick colds in a matter of days, I feel like Im finally getting over it eight days later.

Question for the Panthethine users, where are you guys getting it from? And is there a difference between Panthethine and Pantothenic Acid?

Health food stores carry it. Panthethine is the active ingredient in panothenic acid.

How ya all doing. As you can all see in my sig, i started pantothenic acid on may 20th. Its now been over 5 months and im still using it. I just need to know a few things if anyone can shed some light on my situation. I'm currently taking about 8grams of pant a day. Started on 10 and then went to 8, but i dnt want to drop lower just incase the effects of it go away. Now as for the results. At one point my skin was actually clear. Like perfect, and i had a week of bliss. but that only lasted for a week, now i still get the a few all the time. I changed my supplier from GNC to someone on eBay, because GNC had run out. Now im not sure weather this is due to the change or not but im starting to get like weak(is the best way i can explain). My joints feel like im an old man. and i usually mess around with my mates and my arms are like steel. I got punched yesterday and im bruised. I never bruise. Also my necks killing and i have like 4 mouth ulcers ? Someone said vitamin deficiency ? I'm not sure. and these new pant i got taste like camel sh*t.. Thanks guys

Update: I switched over from B5 to Panthethine about 2 weeks ago and I am completely clear again! So far, it has worked JUST AS GOOD as B5 and the best part is that I don't have to megadose to achieve the same results. Meaning, no shitty side effects! When I first started taking it, I knew it was working similarly because my lips felt dry as they did when I was megadosing B5. It's still too early to tell, but I think it might even work more effectively than B5 because my skin feels more healthy, smoother, and it doesn't over-dry either. I just started taking Omega 3 with it a few days ago and that has also helped me stay clear. Here is what I am currently taking each day:

Panthethine - 900 mg

Omega 3 (Fish oil) - 3600 mg

Zinc- 50 mg

B-100 Complex

I'll continue to keep you guys updated, but so far so good. And if you're scared of megadosing on B5 because of its side effects, I recommend you give Panthethine a chance.

I got that B5 and I never tried it. My boyfriend's sister (she is a pharmacist) told me it is not good. Don't remember the exact reason, it was so long time ago.. I'm on yaz now and I think it clearing up a little.. I've been on yaz for 6 months now.

Planning to go to a different derm cos mine sucks!!! :crazy2:

I order my B5 and panthethine online because it's cheaper than buying from GNC. GNC carries B5, but I'm not sure about panthethine. If hair loss runs in your family, you may consider trying panthethine before resorting to B5. As I said in my other post, panthethine and fish oil is working just as good for me, if not better, than B5. If you do decide to use B5 be sure to take a B-100 complex and BIOTIN (to keep your hair healthy) daily.

I have had acne since about age 12 and I am now 20. Nothing, and I mean nothing has worked. JUst recently I started to go swimming daily, and this has really helped. I started B5 almost two weeks ago, and I am in the purging process. I broke out with small acne all over and especially around my legs and arms. As of today, they've subsided and I must say, they have done wonders for my red marks. I've had some red marks for over a year/two years and they are fading. Oil production is still high though, maybe that will subside in a while.

I buy 60 tablets of 1000mg for about 10 dollars.
