Suffering From Pih More Than Acne Itself 🙁

I've had acne for just about a decade now with varying degrees of severity, and I feel like I'm finally approaching "clear", albeit slowly. But clear as in, no more new pimples....I've still got so much hyperpigmentation. It practically covers all my cheeks, temple and jawline and it just sucks because even if I have no active whiteheads or whatever, it's almost like, so what? Practically my entire face is still covered in marks of some sort, so I still have to wear a lot of makeup to cover it up because I literally can't live without it. I feel like nothing works in terms of getting rid of these marks...and I know most treatments for PIH take a really long time but it's still discouraging. I don't even feel like I've achieved much because of it, even if the texture is better, it still LOOKS awful. :( I just needed somewhere to rant because it just really sucks and even though I try to stay positive most of the time, some days I can't but hate myself (even though I don't really think it's my FAULT that I have acne or something).

Don't hate yourself - you are so much more than your skin!

I do know exactly what you mean though. I'm mostly clear now but a tonne of PIH and it's exactly like you said - it's so great to not be dealing with a constant face-full of active acne, but it still doesn't look clear! It's frustrating for sure.

What have you tried for PIH? I'm still learning about how to treat it I guess - and all I really know of is to use AHA and sunscreen / SPF everyday to help stop them from getting any worse.

And, as hard as it can be, to be patient and give it time. It's a long slow process but hopefully in time they do fade.

there are lasers designed to target redness, ie ipl, pdl...that will speed things along

if money is an object try lactic acid peels (read directions and follow them!) weekly, like 20%- and if your skin can take it use an AHA, like Dan's, daily.

it's a fight but you can make progress...and sunscreen, don't forget that!

I've really only just started using Dan's AHA because last time I upped the dosage too quickly and it burned my skin so I've been nervously trying again.

I'd try a lactic acid peel but ever since I burned my skin by accident I've been really scared to try anything that harsh. Plus I have really sensitive skin and I don't want to risk damaging it further.

I have considered lemon juice and honey though which apparently naturally have AHA?

Personally the only thing I've found to help lighten my PIH marks is tretinoin cream. It's technically an acne treatment but it also helps heal marks faster. Also, make sure you wear sunscreen so the marks don't darken. Use lots of moisturizer as well. But really the only thing that will get rid of PIH permanently is to give it time. Unfortunately I know it feels like we don't have all the time in the world but there really isn't much else we can do. I'm not trying to sound like a pessimist and I'm sure there are some products out there to speed up the process, but nothing is going to clear up PIH overnight.

I know nothing is going to clear up over night - I've had PIH since I started having acne, just because I have Asian skin so I'm more prone to it. Still, as much as I try to hold my head above the water and such, once in a while I crack. And it's always especially difficult when I know my skin is getting better as far as active acne goes, but doesn't seem to look the part simply because of my PIH.

But yes for the record, I do wear sunscreen. :D
