  1. Alright, I’m going to give you the rundown, and try to be short and sweet: moderate acne at age 15, prescribed Bactrim DS - had flawless skin for a year, then ended my course. My acne came back with a vengeance. Tried almost every antibiotic out there with no luck. Went on Doxy, cleared me 85% for 2 years. Went off Doxy. Contracted Lyme disease, and went back on Doxy (it’s a treatment for it - who knew!) with Ampicillin, which subsequently cleared me 85% again. On both for 3 years on and off. Qu
  2. Hi girls. As I've posted before, I tried Spiro for 1 week and I believe it caused me to start to break out much worse than I already was. My acne is relatively mild, and I do not get cysts or nodules. However 5 days on Spiro and I got a deep nodule that is still there after 3 months - this has never happened to me before. So I took a 3 month break to get all my bloodwork done and do tons of research. I've decided to give it another go, however I know that I cannot tolerate an "initial breakout"
  3. The rundown: I've been on aldactone (no less than 50 mg, 100 mg for a while) since September 2009. I am in the end-run of laser hair removal (taken up to help with acne, and just in general). I am half-Asian, have light to medium skin tone, and have still suffered serious, semi-permanent hyperpigmentation due to the lasers and aldactone. During two years of Accutane, I NEVER experienced the awful pitting, inelasticity, and permanent red/purple marks and bumpiness/bad texture I did on a

    Week 5 Of Spiro

Hey guys so this hasn't been a good week for me! I've been under a lot of stress, have a major exam coming up in a few days and a whole lot else going on. And I feel like it is taking a toll on my skin. I've broken out quite a bit in the last week and a half. My skin has really dried out, but I feel like its dried out too much and my body is reacting by producing oil. So it looks slightly flaky but shiny. I'm still trying to figure out how to work around this. My forehead was clearing u

Continuing On And On And On And On

So, what it's been like 4 days? 5 days? Man i'm dodgy at keeping track and doing daily updates but whatevs bru So I actually think something's happening... well at least I think it is... it doesn't seem any worse at least thank goodness and I have actually been told that it's looking better so here's hoping for continued recovery! I've actually been a bit naughty lately too and ate some bread! shock horror! which I'm not meant to do due to gluten not meshing with the old bods and all..

    Low Androgens And Spiro

I'm wondering if anyone here has been tested and has low androgen levels? I know that many are within normal range, but I'm talking about those whose androgens are at the low end or below the normal range for adult women. I recently had very thorough bloodwork and urine analysis done, and all of my androgens are at the low end, or below normal. Yet I have chronic acne around my chin and facial hair, and a high sex drive. It's mind boggling, but the endocrinologist says most likely it is overacti

    Shawna's Spironolactone Log

Days on Spironolactone: 9 Days without Picking: 0 Forehead:Clear Right Cheek: 1 active Left Cheek: 1 active Right Side of Chin: 3 actives Left Side of Chin: 6 actives Back: 3 actives Scarring: Along my chin, jawline and underneath my cheekbones. Background: I had acne on my forehead as an early teen. When I was 17-18 my acne transitioned to my cheeks and chin and my forehead completely cleared. At this point, my forehead never breaks out but I do have enlarged pores due to scarri
  8. I've had horrible, persistent cystic acne from age 14 onward and thick facial hair (not hirsutism, but it's definitely noticable and plentiful....slightly coarser than peach fuzz, and darker) that I wax currently. (It's sucks. Done at home, at least, as the hair grows back, zits come in. But I don't know what else to do and I can't thread or get waxed in a salon every week. It also makes my skin sore and red, of course, even though I do a good job of keep the skin taut when pulling, using the oi
  9. From May 2009 to fall 2012, I was on spiro, between 50 mg to 100, on and off. All in all, it was a horrible experience. For the first year, I know I was hyperkalemic, it made my hair limp, gross, thinned and greasy, caused serious joint pain and fatigue, and did zero to help with recurrent pattern cystic acne during my period on my cheeks/jaw. It also made my skin grey and saggy, frankly--caused bloat and water retention all over and made me sweaty and tired. (For reference, I took each dos

    Week 12 Of Spiro

Hello! So sorry I have been MIA for the past month and a bit! My skin is doing really good though! So Right now I have maybe two small pimples happening. But quite a few little bumps that I think are blackheads. I had two really big ones for the past week and half and they are finally settling down but they stuck out really badly because the rest of my skin looks really clear. My forehead is clear of the little bumps. I use MURAD's spot treatment on my forehead and cheeks despite th

    Spironolactone And Yaz

Hello, this is my first forum post! A little background on me, I'm 29 years old and have been dealing with moderate to severe cystic acne for many years, with a few good years in between. I've been on and used just about every acne medication under the sun. I've been on Accutane twice. I came off my last treatment about 10 months ago. The results lasted about 5-6 months but the last 4-5 months, it's been coming back. I was on Trisprintec and minocycline for a few months and that sorta seemed

    Spironolactone: Does Brand Matter?

Hey! I've been taking Spironolactone (indicated as Teva-Spironolactone on the bottle) and I'm just wondering whether anyone knows if there's a true difference between the available brands with regards to efficiency? I'm in Canada and it looks like we have 3 types available here: Aldactone, Novo-Spiroton and Teva-Spironolactone.
  13. Does anyone have any alternatives to Spironolactone (Aldactone) for cystic acne in women that are safe to use during pregnancy (and when trying to conceive)? How long do you need to be off of Spironolactone before it is considered safe for conception? I have been taking it for a few years now, and currently take 50mg per day. It is the ONLY thing that has ever worked for my cystic acne aside from 2 rounds of Accutane when I was a teenager. (Accutane has horrible side effects however, and is a

    Milestone And Carry On

Ok I have strived to survive and have ultimately reached the one month mark of spiro. which is good. Considering last year I'd use something for two weeks, freak out and bail on it.... makes for unhappy skin and an unhappy me. The thing that I find interesting after reading various reviews on spiro is that like 99% of people commenting on this med claimed that it caused major upsets in the initial stages due to an explosion of acne which then eventually calmed down. Bloody hell man! if i had

    Not So Happy Chappy

Bloody hell man... like honestly, the same story of getting the old hopes up what with the skin clearing and all then BAM! new breakouts! so shattering... at least one side of my face has managed to stay clear and smooth, now on the waiting side for the acne marks to fade away. The other side of my face however is defying the meds I'm taking and going into remission of breaking out.... rage at life man.... At least it's not as bad and not as many though the more it breaks out, the more red t
  16. I am a 22 years old, my jawline acne started when I was 19. It started after a very unhealthy summer of lots of drinking, late nights, stress, and unhealthy eating habits. I had just started the atkins diet and the birth control pill (sorry, can't remember which one) when it cropped up.... and almost overnight, cysts took over my lower face. I did everything to try and control it. I stopped taking the birth control pill, I stopped drinking, started eating fruits and complex carbs again (in hop
  17. I'm looking through the archives but I was hoping to get some advice through this. I've posted about this before, but I've been on 50 mg (100 for a while) since September 2009, when I was 23. Now I'm 26, on 50 mg, still get cysts, nodules, and papules on my cheeks (especially around my period), and worse, I feel the recurring zits never really heal...just shrink between periods. My skin is horribly inelastic (all over--limbs too, not just face. Cuts, bruises and makes all take too long to he
  18. Okkkkkk so I've never posted on a forum but feel the need now. I've had no acne ever and after the age of 30 I started developing huge cysts that were scarring my face. It was ruining my life. I finally got on aldactone or aka spiro. I'm a nurse and know this isn't for everyone. Keep following cause I have an alternative. So the spiro has been amazing for me. I don't even have to wear makeup anymore. My gf couldn't stay on it because she has normally low blood pressure and she was getting to diz

    Another Spiro Log

Hey theree! So, it's that time of year again where my face goes to shit! So, finally decided to make an account on this site since I've been browsing it for years to find the acne cure miracle.. After years of being stuck with cystic acne, I've decided to try a more hormonal based approach since in the last few months, my skin has fluctuated from 'not too bad' to 'please peel my skin off' levels of intensity. My doctor put me on 25mg of Spiro last week but I've just been 50mg. I'm also using ery

    Day 23

im sorryy i havnt been updating as often as i intended to do. My mood has been very down lately and im feeling super depressed. I am not sure if Aldactone is doing much for my acne as I am also using a topical treatment which I just stopped using because it was irritating my skin. My tummy cramps isnt as bad as it was now but I still occasionally get the cramps. I also noticed that my period came earlier than it was supposed to maybe due to aldactone. I might be stopping Aldactone and using chin

    Spiro Time, Baby.

So, I started taking Spironolactone at 100mg five days ago and I'm kind of excited to start seeing some results. I know it takes most people over two weeks to see anything occur, so in the meantime...patience is key. I'd like to be clear by the end of this summer, if not sooner, so I can get ActivFX for my scarring. I haven't had any negative side-effects from this yet (e.g. frequent urination, wonky periods, fatigue, dizziness or nausea), but only time will tell. Maybe I'll be one of those luck
  23. Hi guys! I'm looking for some advice on Spironolactone. I have been off of the Mirena IUD (which was giving me severe cystic acne after 3 years of having it in) for about 4 months now and am on my fourth pack of Beyaz birth control. I am finally seeing a drastic change in my skin. No more cysts at all! It's great. However, I am not 100% clear. I'm thinking about taking Spironolactone, but I have some questions about it first. If this is all super redundant, and you've seen a post where

Ortho Tri + Spiro Vs. Diane 35?

Hello everyone, New to this site, but hoping someone out there might be able to give some advice! I'm 29, and I've suffered from bad acne since I can remember. I went on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and it cleared up beautifully. I started breaking out again at 26, and my dermatologist in San Francisco prescribed Spiro on top of the OTC. I'm not a fan of drugs in general, but Spiro has been such a miracle drug for me. My skin is clearer than it's ever been, and the diuretic component helped me shed the
