  1. I go through phases with water. I often don't have much of a hankering for it, but if I force myself to drink it for a coupla days then I can't stop. Right now I'd say I'm drinking 1.5-2 liters a day. I work an office job, at a desk pretty much all day. I have a cup; probably 16 ounces, that I keep on my desk. There's a filtered water cooler about 15 steps from my desk, on the way to the bathroom. I fill it probably 3-5 times a day, on average. At home, I keep a 1 liter bottle around and fill it when I get home from the filtered tap, and just cruise on it until I got o bed. I just finished tonight's bottle while I was reading this thread.

    One thing that's really helped me is having a reminder to start drinking during the day. Like I said, I work a desk job. I also take a handful of vitamins throughout the day. The nature of my job is quiet and even keel one minute and hectic the next. If it weren't for reminders, I'd never remember to do anything but work.

    So, I set up alarms on my computer. I drink my one cup of coffee in the morning, which I'm always done with by 8:45 or so. I get a reminder at 9:15 to get water. At 9:30, 10:30, 12:30, 2, and 3:30 to take various vitamins and supplements. With the reminder to get moving on water early on in the day (hardly first thing; I'm at my desk at 7:30), I get my body and my mind in the rhythm of it. With all the vitamins, I need a lot of water to take them and wash them down properly. And I usually just have water with lunch, though sometimes I'll get a soda or bring some juice from home. Mostly, though, anything else tastes too strong.

  2. Absolutely right, TTO shouldn't be used on your whole face indiscriminately. I have a small bottle of TTO that I dip a qtip into, and dab on individual spots.

    That's the way it should be done, BP all over the face and using it on places with normal skin is just going to cause irritation and probably acne in areas you never had problems with. A small amount on a qtip will destroy the acne no doubt.. but it will never SOLVE your acne problems. Im not sure if getting rid of acne by spot treating will cause acne scars but i still would never use it as its way to harsh no matter what percentage.

    Agreed. It's pretty much a reaction to an already existing problem. Not a bad thing, it's certainly a good thing to know how to do until you figure out how to get the problem to stop altogether.

    Which is why I'm exploring other tactics on that front, the getting-the-problem-to-stop-happening front. But in the meantime, knowing how to resolve it quickly is handy.

  3. Personally, I rinse with warm/hot water, steam with really hot water, rinse with warm/hot water, and then splash with the coldest water I can get from my tap to close my pores.

    The steaming is pretty obvious, it opens my pores. I don't feel clean if I don't use warmer water, and I know I usually have a breakout when the weather gets super hot, because I usually start using cooler water out of a need to beat the heat.

    Personally, I use a hot compress to help draw the core of the blemish to the surface, and dab TTO on it. I find it shortening the time I have cysts for by quite a lot.

  5. Tea tree oil can be bought at any store that has even the weakest "natural" section. I don't know about CVS or stores like that but Wegmans has it, Whole foods does, any kind of health food store will have it. CVS might have it... I've never really checked. Pure tea tree oil (and hot compresses, but I understand why you're hesitant to try that) has helped me reduce the duration of my cysts to only a few days, for the most part.

  6. Keep a compact and some concealer in your room with you. After nearly ten years with my husband, I still don't like to wander around his parent's house without any makeup at all, even if they are my family and love me to bits. Anything really obvious I'll cover. I personally don't care much about old scarring, but active blemishes... those get covered.

    Pretty much the only person who sees me sans makeup when I'm broken out is my husband, and even for him I'll wear some concealer if I feel really gross.

  7. Ok, I don't understand how anyone can hate on exercise being a part of this plan. Exercise is ALWAYS a good idea!! Find me one licensed individual in the medical profession that tells you not to exercise and I'll eat my shoe.

    With regard to acne, specifically, exercise affects how well and how quickly certain foods and nutrients are metabolized (or NOT metabolized). So of course it stands to reason that exercise is a part of the equation.

  8. Personally, I think the biggest PR mistake with acne is that so many seem to think that acne is the result of being unclean-- and no one wants to be unclean, or viewed that way. Were it not for that I think acne wouldn't be the scarlet letter it is today. I don't think it'd ever be viewed as desirable, but perhaps less repelling than in is now.

  9. Little, I think if your breakouts pretty regularly coincide with your cycle, then you're more likely to have luck with hormonal regulation as a correction for your acne. Like birth control pills. They did jack squat for me for the years I was on them, except for kill my libido. But I think this is just confirming that my acne is not heavily influenced by my hormonal cycle.

  10. I don't know where this pervasive view that seems to be coming from teenage boys on this forum that women are evil, shallow, good for nothing and or prostitutes, but it's getting really old.

    I'm not saying having a significant other is the be all end all of existence, but if your way of making yourself feel better about not having a girlfriend is to make all women out to be teh debil, then you've got bigger problems than simply romantic ones.

  11. Do you use any product in your hair? Perhaps it's not the sweat, per se, it's the mix of sweat and a hair product that's causing your problem.

    Perhaps you should rinse off before you start your workout. Most places ask that you rinse off before you get in the pool, but if you rinse once before you work out at all and then again before you get in the pool, even if you're not washing completely, that'd probably be an improvement.

  12. Shaving doesn't make hair grow in differently!! I loathe this old wives' tale. Shaving cuts the hair to a blunt end, rather than it's natural tapered end. This makes it feel thicker and look darker, but it's the exact same hair that was growing there before. Just has a haircut.

    Anyhoo, I personally don't see the appeal of a guy being "bald". I don't think I'd have a problem with the actual result, but the message, would be that a guy is a little too focused on his presentation. The same way a metrosexual guy wouldn't really appeal to me. That's simply my taste, but hell, I'm married anyhow, so the only one who has to be concerned with being my taste is my husband. And he does no downstairs landscaping.

    I think if you absolutely want to do something with your lawn, you should stick with trimming. Perhaps not as closely trimmed as a 1 on the beard trimmer... maybe try a four or a five. Keep things neat but not gone.

    But again, my opinion as a married woman may not be what you're looking for. Have fun experimenting.

    (And you're right, razor burn is a bitch.)

  13. Store bought mineral makeup is usually of very low quality and full of filler ingredients. I'm mostly pointing my finger at drugstore brands, here. They have talc and cornstarch in them and are no good for anyone, least of all those of us with "problem" skin.

    The brands that you have little choice but to order online have fewer ingredients, no fillers, and are less likely to be irritating to your skin. They're more expensive, yes, but if MMU from the store doesn't work for you, that doesn't mean MMU isn't for you. It just means you tried the cheapest, lowest quality that was available and THAT didn't work for you.

    That said, I spent three years trying to make MMU work for me, and I finally caved and went back to liquid-- a drugstore brand, no less.

  14. Before getting involved with a derm, try applying a hot compress (a washcloth soaked in hot water) a few nights in a row, followed by tea tree oil. A much cheaper and, in my experience, just as effective treatment.

  15. I don't know what it is, exactly (I can't even always identify my own), but if it feels deep, I know what you're talking about. Ice it, hit it with some tea tree oil, and if you're secure enough in your masculinity, dab a bit of coverup on it.

    Hydrocortizone will be at the drug store with the anti-itch stuff.

    Egg white/lemon is some egg whites mixed with some lemon juice.

    What does OCM stand for ....oil cleansing method ?

    how do you do that

    also, how well has your clogged pores responded to this ... do you still get clogged pores ?

    Sorry, I should have been more expansive with my initial post.

    Yes, OCM is the Oil Cleansing Method. Be forewarned, though, like any other acne treatment, what works for some can be disastrous for others. It's been working for me for about a month, but did NOT work for me when I started out using extra virgin olive oil-- I broke out horribly. I stopped, of course, and once that was almost completely resolved, I switched to grapeseed oil (along with castor oil, always with castor oil) and I've had a lot of success. I haven't been doing it long enough to know whether it's a long term solution for me, but with regard to blackheads and clogged pores, I had them bad before I did OCM with EVOO, and they went away even when I was breaking out in cystic acne from the EVOO. Then I stopped OCM, and the clogged pores and blackheads came back. When I started up again with grapeseed oil, they went away. So I'm pretty well convinced that the OCM is what's doing it.

    However, in the interests of full disclosure, there are other things that come with doing OCM for me that I don't otherwise. Namely steaming. I use a lot of hot water when I do OCM, and I use a washcloth soaked in hot water to steam my face for several minutes when I do OCM. I haven't experimented to see if the steaming would help with the blackheads and clogged pores even if I weren't doing OCM; frankly, I enjoy it too much, and am seeing too many positive things happening on my face to change anything about my routine right now.

    My pores aren't 100% clear, but they're miles better than when I started OCM about a month ago. Every night I see them clearing up. Some night I make very obvious, tangible progress, other nights I don't. But the overall effect is pretty positive.

    I'll detail my routine for you, but I want to be really, really clear: Some people's skin react REALLY badly to OCM. I really highly recommend doing some of your own research on the process and read some reviews on your own and make your own decision about whether you want to take the risk of trying it. You can find some reviews at MakeupAlley, and there's a long thread about it here too in the General Products forum. If you elect to do this, please remember that it sometimes takes a few different formulations before you sort out what works best for you. Some of the bad formulations can cause some damage. You've got to understand what you're trying before you try it, because as much as I enjoy this, it doesn't work for everyone.

    (I'm probably scaring you off of it... I don't mean to. I just don't want to feel responsible if it doesn't work for you!!)

    I use grapeseed oil (purchased from Whole Foods) and castor oil (purchased from a local health food store-- Whole Foods was out when I got there). The castor oil is cold pressed and organic. There's mixed review out there of the castor oil you can get in the drugstore. Some say it's just fine, others wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. The organic cold pressed stuff isn't much more expensive (maybe 4 bucks instead of 2.50 for 6 ounces or so) so if you can find it, I'd say it's worth it. The grapeseed oil is also about a six ounce bottle, and I think was 5 bucks. I believe it's organic, though grape seeds are too small to be cold pressed, so it's mechanically pressed. Your research will inform you as to how much you want to care about these details.

    Many people pre-mix their oils; I don't. Frankly, I tried it and didn't find it super sanitary. Now, I just keep both bottles next to my sink, and mix in my hand. This means I can adjust my mixture as I see fit: a little more castor oil one day, a little less the next, a couple of drops of jojoba oil once a week.

    The point of OCM is that castor oil is a drawing oil. It'll pull impurities out of your skin. This is the "cleaning" part of OCM. But castor oil can also be very drying to the skin, so you can't just use it straight (castor oil is also a home remedy for hair growth, like filling in sparse eyebrows, so I really wouldn't use it straight for that reason alone). It's also sticky and thick and wouldn't spread well anyhow. This is where your second, or "carrier" oil comes in. I think most people start out with EVOO because they have it around the house, but again, I had really bad results with EVOO, so proceed with caution. Other popular and less problematic oils include: sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, and jojoba. There are others, of course, but these will be the easiest to find.

    I squirt a large puddle of grapeseed oil into my hand, and then a couple of generous drops of castor oil. I rub the mixture between my hands and then massage into my face. How long I do this for varies; once a week I go for about an hour (I add some jojoba oil on these days) while my husband's out of the house at class, but nightly I go for one to five minutes.

    I wash my hands and then run a washcloth under steaming hot water. I squeeze out the excess water and lay the towel on my face until it gets cool. I do this 3-4 times. It's very soothing and you can feel your pores opening. Then I cool the running water off some (still very warm, but not steaming) and use the soaking wet washcloth to massage the oil (and the gross that the oil has pulled out of my pores) off of my skin. I do this in sections: one cheek at a time, my chin, my nose, and my forehead. After that I splash my face with warm water, and then again with ICE COLD water. This is intended to close the pores back up again, and gives me the farking chills. But I think it's making a difference. I blot dry with a towel and that's that. Sometimes, if I'm feeling uncomfortably tight, I'll use a moisturizer or serum, but I've even been skipping that of late with no adverse affects.

    I do all this at night and in the morning I wash with a gentle castile cleanser. My skin overall has been improving, and blackheads and clogged pores have shown a marked improvement.

  17. Way back when, before we got married, my husband and I spent many a weekend holed up in the basement of the house we were renting at the time with cartons and cartons of cigarettes, two liter bottles of coke and takeout subs and pizza and watch seasons of the Sopranos. Good times.

    We're a little more high brow these days, though. Those were good times though, fo sho.
