  1. So sorry you are having such a rough time but I used to have this kind of acne so I know what you are going through. You have cystic acne...a deeper kind of acne...and probably some rosacea as well. What this means is that topical BP may be too irritating for your skin and irritation makes cystic acne worse rather than better. In other words, the benefits of BP are lost due to the increase in irritation. If you really want to get clear you need to see a dermatologist or at least your family
  2. I'm so sorry you're having such a terrible time! I too have struggled with cystic acne and whiteheads my whole adult life and am much older than you. I also had a hysterectomy in my early 40's which messes up hormones even if tests come back okay. The thing is your tests are "okay" for a post menopausal woman...meaning you have less estrogen. This lack of estrogen causes an imbalance so the testosterone in your body becomes more dominant (still "normal" but dominant) and this causes more oil
  3. It can take several months to see a difference when making food changes...unless you are really allergic to something - then avoiding it may result in a quicker turnaround. Avoiding dairy is a key thing to help acne and is very documented in research. You can try using another kind of "milk" in your coffee like soymilk or almond milk. I love soymilk in my tea. I drink roasted dandelion root tea which tastes great...like hot chocolate...and is especially good with the soymilk. For me person

Thanks - skin is clear again! Avoiding brazil nuts did the trick. It's just crazy to me how food can cause a flare-up. For me, flare-ups from food are different than how I used to get acne. Food reactions look like acne but more inflamed, come up suddenly and itch!!! Hormonal acne was a slower process and deeper in the skin. The flare-up I got recently was very superficial but with large red spots, some of which had whiteheads. It went away within a couple of days of stopping the brazil n

Thanks! Yes, I have a derm appt this week and am discussing this with him. Still recovering from flare-up. Everything is fading which is good. I'm following a strict rosacea and acne diet which is definitely helping. The other thing I'd been eating too much of was avocado. A little is okay but I was eating almost a whole avocado everyday. The rosacea diet recommends avoiding avocado. My best diet is a combo rosacea-acne diet.

Stopped eating the brazil nuts several days ago and my skin is much less inflamed. Still have one or two red spots but they are not infected and fading. Crossing my fingers it was just the nuts.
  7. Thanks so much for your help! Years ago I saw a naturopath and it was helpful. Actually my GP is into "functional medicine" and endorses alternative methods so part of my treatment was getting all kinds of tests to determine hormone, cortisol, adrenal levels, allergies, etc. It helped get things started and got me on the diet I'm on now. Which actually includes not eating nuts but the PA on staff wanted me to eat the brazil nuts to boost thyroid function so I was doing that...and I got a rea
  8. Hi --- sorry you're going through this. I'm going through a flare-up myself. You're still very young and may outgrow acne yet. My kids outgrew their acne in their 30's. Yes the nicotine in your vapor cigs may be making things worse. Try quitting altogether. Try also cutting out sugar and sweet foods, as well as fried and oily foods like salad dressings. You may be dealing with rosacea along with acne. Google rosacea triggers...they are slightly different than acne triggers. Try to follo
  9. My skin was clear for years and years but in the past month it has gotten worse and worse. This morning I woke up with red inflamed pustules on my cheeks and chin. Looks horrid. Looks like I'm a teenager. I'm really very sad and depressed. I made some small changes with diet. About 6 weeks ago my doctor recommended I eat 2 brazil nuts/day and iodized salt because of borderline low thyroid. About 3 weeks ago my skin started breaking out more and more. I thought it was nerves because I

  11. So happy to hear your diet is working! Yeah! If you get a strong reaction to eating too much fruit you may be somewhat sensitive to fructose. Which means you lack the enzymes needed to digest fruit well so you feel bloated and can get an acne flare-up. I was tested for fructose after feeling sick from sugary foods and too much fruit. Way to figure this out without the test is to do what you're doing...eat mostly vegies and whole starches and see how you feel. People sensitive to fructose (
  12. What you have could be several different things but I'd say it is just non-inflammatory acne...basically very plugged up pores --- comedones plus blackheads. If you tolerated BP before and just got dryness then you might want to try using a BP cleanser to open the pores and help them shed those plugs. It won't dry out your skin like topical BP does. I like Panoxyl 10% which is sold over the counter but used to be a prescription medication. You wash with it to the count of 60, then rinse with
  13. Hi Emma Just want to allay your fears re: microdermabrasion and those horror stories --- my guess is that many of these stories are from people who had the diamond crystal spray kind of microdermabrasion done by poorly trained salon staff and/or they are confusing microdermabrasion with more invasive procedures which are also sometimes done by beauty salons. The diamond crystal spray microdermabrasion is the old fashioned method which sprayed crystals on the skin and then sucked up the crystal
  14. Hi Emmie I too suffered from cystic acne but for decades. I'll share my thoughts and experience on both meds and diet. FYI --- I am now clear. MEDS --- like you I was prescribed many acne meds but this went on for decades. However it was always one or at most two at a time (i.e. an antibiotic or a topical or birth control, etc.) My current derm of 5 years who is an expert in adult cystic acne says that only a multi-prong approach will clear up resistant adult cystic acne. This means that
  15. I'm so sorry you're having such a bad flare-up. I know how it feels...been there many times myself. I have some ideas that will help. This is what got me clear after having extremely resistant and chronic cystic acne and using every product under the sun. This will help your current inflamed cyst go down and will help prevent new ones. Stop eating processed oils of any kind. This will help lower inflammation and oiliness on the skin (and blocked pores!). This means avoiding salad dressing
