    My FAQ's (Last updated 03/21/18): Greetings strangers! *^Me *^You So... Let's just jump right into it, shall we? Time to say goodbye to "Regimen's" and live life to the best of your ability! ------------------- A lot of people have sent me messages since I joined this site at the age of 22. Many of the questions were similar, so I decided to gather my top frequently asked questions (FAQ's) here based on what people have asked me numerously, and what people are probably still curious about. If you see a question you have that's not here, then please let me know via message, e-mail, or just by commenting bellow! My previous pictures and past regimens are always publicly available, with pictures and descriptions of what I was doing at that time. Everyone is welcomed to take a look at them if they fell like, but the most updated and current information will be right here. ----------------- I would first like to give a huge thanks and shout-out to everyone for sending me links to all the information they have found in regards to acne and their life, and for posting their research and stories. I was so surprised with how much I was learning when I first came to this website! When I first joined, I joined for The Acne.org Regimen, and it worked! Sadly, its cons outweighed its benefits, and when I quit my acne unsurprisingly came back full blown. I pretty much decided that enough was enough, and wanted to get rid of it for good. My body had been screaming at me for years and I did nothing but ignore it. Therefore, my "Final Regimen" was taking care of myself from the inside out, in every simple, logical practical way. Most people do not do this, or at least if they do then they find it very hard to maintain. This is a lifestyle change and decision, and I admit that I am an entirely different person and personality when it comes to what I do in my life and how I live. In fact, after I got rid of my acne, I was never planning to come back on here because the general attitude of people and how resisted what I said. I also lived with people who all had similar stories: ‘It’s a chronic problem’, ‘I’m too depressed’, ‘I feel sick’, ‘I’m moody and angry’, ‘It runs my family’, ‘diet does not effect my health’... etc. People simply do not want to change their their diet and lifestyle, and if they did, then they either cheated and denied it was effecting them, stopped exploring themselves and remained ignorant to other kinds of growth they could have been having, or changed their diet but became somewhat saddened about it, and never maintained it. I never heard from a lot of people again. Look, I've been there with the ‘chronic’ and ‘incurable acne’. Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with feeling devastated for a short while, and letting it sink in that your skin may be 'different'. However, the beautifully ironic truth is that your skin is not very different, and a change to your diet is probably the best thing that could ever happen to you right now. All of this may depend on what you mean when you talk about such things, but in reality there only exists one truth. My skin, for example, was acne prone, and my skin type is 'different', Humans are generally effected in the same way, only with a unique surplus of different kinds of symptoms and results. Not everyone will be ‘displayed’ equally, but you may be surprised at the similarities underneath the surface. Acne was with me since I was four years old, and exploded when I was 14. I understand what it means to be sensitive, ignorant, teased, pushed around, emotionally abused, yelled at, and broken. If you want to talk to someone where acne did truly effect so many areas of their life, then you are speaking to the right person here! But you can NOT let what others do shape your attitude and cosmology into thinking that you deserve to live and eat the way others do. In what way are they actually 'living the good life?'. They're not, and I don't care if they never develop cancer or diabetes for the rest of their lives either. This is not the point. Life is not just about what you want to eat think deserve to do without consequences. Sooooo... basically said, I have a very difficult job here, and that's trying to reach out to as many people as possible as effective as possible. Without being too condescending, too confusing, too off-putting, and relate as much as possible, I'll do my best to reach into those dark, forgotten corners of your mind and break as many fourth walls as I possibly can. So as the saying goes, buckle up mo-fo's because I'm either about to make your day or piss you off. Either way... ------------------- How did you get rid of your acne? -Diet (Mostly Raw Vegetables, Home Cooking, Vegetable Juicing, 99.5% Vegan). -Exercise (1-7 times a week). -Lifestyle (Sleep, Non-depression, Joy and Bliss). But primarily diet. Who are you and what do you do? My name is Renee. I was born and raised in the Chicago Suburbs. I've graduated Community College. I moved to California in 2015. I'm the Owner/Production Manager of a small business. I currently study a wide variety of things on my own and with other people. I am a Truth Seeker (No, it's not what you googled). What are your Health Stats (After a Physical)? Last Official Physical was from 08/06/2012: Height: 5 ft. 5 in. (I've been that height for several years). Weight: 114 lb. (This ranges depending on muscle). BMI (Body Mass Index): 20 (18.5-24.9 = Normal). Cholesterol: 169 (Less than 200 = Desirable). HDL (Good Cholesterol): 83 (60+ is High, which is optimal and good). Triglycerides: 42 (Less than 150 = Normal). LDL: 78 (Less than 100 = Optimal and good). Glucose: 83 (Average is 80-120, so this is good). Liver and Kidney function: Normal. I do not have anemia (blood count is normal). I took a normal blood test and fasted for 12 hours before drawing blood. I didn't ask for anything special. More Tests on 04/19/13: - Had a stool test and blood test done. Required no fasting. - RESULTS: Everything was negative for parasites in my stools, and my thyroid function is healthy and working. More Tests on 05/08/13: - Had a skin prick allergy test done (60 common foods/allergens). - RESULTS: It concluded that I had no food allergies whatsoever. How much sleep do you get Anywhere from 5 to 9 hours a night. I know, random, but generally speaking it's about 8 hours. If it’s shorter, then I’ll try to aim for a nap later that day. I rarely sleep 5 hours. During full-time college life combined with full-time jobs... when I was getting rid of my acne... I sometimes use to sleep 4-5 hours, then nap once twice later on the same day. Currently, I wake/sleep around the same time every day. Do you exercise? Yes. How often? Usually six times a week. I also do a variety of chores and other daily tasks in addition. I enjoy walks, and stretch constantly. I move around a lot doing cooking, cleaning, laundry, vacuuming, shoveling snow/raking leaves/mowing lawn, dusting, organizing, etc… I am usually constantly on my feet, but I rest frequently and whenever I feel like it. I did not need to exercise this frequently to have clear skin. In fact, I went for several months just taking simple walks and still didn't break out. Do you exercise vigorously? Well... not really. I mean, I wish I could say, but what would that mean to you? Everyone has their own limit. I use to lift weights at the gym, and had more muscle mass when I was between 16 and 19, but now that I've done a lot of studying, working and small business building over the years, I will admit that I have loss some muscle mass. Not to mention I became completely vegetarian when I was 21. Sometimes I will sprint or run for 20 minutes, sweating and raising my heart rate to its max, but I currently don't attempt to body build. My past jobs have been very physical in the past, too, such as cooking, prepping, factory working, food distribution in a freezer, waitress, etc... Acne can be a funny thing in the world of working out and with people who go to the gym a lot. When a was sweating lot and wiping my face, I was never afraid of some kind of contamination from my hands, although anything I did never made my already existing acne feel any better. But I can honestly say now that I doubt sweating in of itself, and touching your face, causes acne unless you had crazy amounts of strange bacteria all over your hands. I always advocate, acne or not, washing your hands occasionally and when necessary, and rinsing your face off with just plain water frequently if washing your face with soap more than twice a day is not an option for you. And if you find yourself splashing your face with water several times a day, which can be normal depending on your work or home environment, then just pat your face dry and keep your hair out of the way. This is all basic care no matter who you are. Do you have stress/depression No. In some ways I'm like a child... … Did you ever have stress/depression? Before? Yes. But the past is no longer important... not even so much the future. What's important is HERE and NOW. Aaaaand that's how you accept, move on, let go and go beyond anything you want. But for the sake of helping others with "Acne and Stress", I will let you know what DID happen to me when I had "depression". I was on a few anti-depression medications in high school for about two years, and received counseling before, neither of which did anything to help. I was teased a lot in high school by both my companions, peers and even my teachers. Some of the teasing was from my acne, but most of it was from the fact that I wasn't very social (not because of my acne). I experienced depressed from grade school all the way through college, never really completely leaving the depression until I was around 21 years of age. Now it feels like I'm talking about someone completely different. When I started college, my depression faded away tremendously. I started seeking out what is real, true, and the end of suffering, and today I have nowhere near the same stress that I did before. Also, my acne got worse with age, not better. My stress faded as I got older, not worse. Therefore, stress did not effect my acne, but this does not mean that it won't effect other people's acne. They are likely effected my their metabolism reacting to their stress, which can cause a wide variety of health issues in general. As a female, do your monthly cycles affect your acne? I never figured this out, lol. I'm still not 100 percent certain about this, but I am going to have to say no. In regards to my cycles alone, I have normal symptoms, and always perfectly timed every 28.5 days. I will admit that I thought I noticed some of my acne linked to my periods, but it was almost next to impossible to catch since I always had acne on my face coming and going. I took daily pictures of my face for a very long time, and stored them in my computer, trying to study them and see if I could capture any kind of possible "pattern" I was missing, but this was difficult to do because: a.) My acne was mostly cysts... they developed slowly as huge, UN-moving spots. Cystic acne remained unnoticed under my skin for several weeks, then took weeks to emerge, pop, and disappear for good... not to mention I also got them in all shapes and sizes. b.) My period was not the cause of all my acne, if at all. c.) There were just too many spots and factors to keep count. Do you take Birth Control? No. Never did. Do you drink alcohol/do drugs? No. Never did. Have you done The Regimen of Acne.org? Yes I did. And yes it worked. But I don't recommend it. More information on all that here: Did you ever take topical/oral medication for your acne? Yes. I've tried everything and anything at all my local stores and pharmacies that said "For Acne" on them since I was 14. I have been an extremely patient acne sufferer for many years, always giving products months to work. Anything prescribed to me was always given to me by my local dermatologists. I do not remember all the prescription names I was on, but I do know that many of the things I took and used that were given to me by my dermatologist worked... ... however, my dermatologists and medications gave me more problems than answers, such as: - Finances: I was constantly pushed to maintain the cost of my medication, as a part time/full time worker AND part-time/full-time student. Treating my acne... not curing it, TREATING it... was anywhere from 100 to 600 dollars per month. This included all oral and topical medications. Some of them had to be done THREE times every single day. - Health: More than 2/3 prescriptions given to me gave me side effects. I had chapped lips, nose bleeds every few months, loss of appetite, shaking, itchy feet, and ‘burning sides of torso’ (kidneys). I also had frequent and sharp headaches, but they only lasted up to 2 or 3 minutes after taking the oral medications. - Damage: I lived with the side effects for years. My face had a thin layer of never ending shedding skin, my hair became thinner, and my acne kept developing and mutating into more cyst-like legions. I also had back, chest and stomach acne, all of which were ignored with my expensive topical face washes. - Mentality: I was frequently called and coached by my dermatologists every month to come in because of how severe I was, and that stopping in any way would only "make the acne worse." Wow, you don't say... I wonder why and when that started to happen... The acne.org Regimen worked for me, and Accutane worked for my brother. Since my first job, my doctors and dermatologists had gotten quite a generous amount of my paychecks. My acne was always treated with something, so I have been paying for it as long as I can remember. However, I no longer go to my doctor or dermatologist for my acne anymore. I can not stand the risks and side effects, not to mention they will always try to put me on something insanely expensive. I was able to get my doctors and dermatologists to admit that these medications were not long lasting, but that there IS a link to what we eat and do that obviously effects our overall health, including the state of our skin which may or may not develop acne. During my last acne visit to my doctor, he had told me that I can never get rid of my acne, that I will always have it no matter what I try to do differently. He was 100 percent wrong. So you completely quit topical washes/medications? Yes. I learned that they caused me more harm than good, but I never was brave enough to go more than three weeks without trying something. Like most people on Acne.org, I was terrified to stop. It meant acne no matter what, and looking like you didn't care about your hygiene and skin. Always starting the regimen over again when you decide to miss some time was a huge nightmare, and was a horrible way to live and feel about yourself. Basically, stopping was not easy but I did it anyway. The only thing I use to wash myself now is simple and organic soap bars (ordered off the internet - coconut, lavender, African black, etc...) and any kind of organic shampoo/conditioner I can get my hands on. There are dozens of simple soap brands in most grocery stores now. Look for brands with no perfume and as few ingredients as possible. And when using soap bars, wash your face and wipe your skin with your finger tips really, really well to get the roughness off. People make the mistake of rinsing too quickly and not long enough... water is your best friend. All the money I saved from quitting all my acne medications was instead used to expand my lifestyle and diet. Do you wear make-up? No. During a photo shoot (likely the picture above), then yes, very minimally and rarely. Make-up costs money and is a completely unnecessary investment to me. If I do put it on, I use my fingers and only use a base foundation. I use any brand that doesn't clog the pores. What do you eat? I enjoy eating: -Vegetables (Cooked, Raw, Boiled, Stir fried, etc...). -Fruit (Mostly Raw). -Beans, Lentils, Legumes and VERY few Nuts. I do NOT eat: -Meat, Dairy or Eggs. -Wheat/Bread and Gluten Products. -Most restaurant food (I hardly eat out anyway). -Almost anything that's not fresh, whole and what I would call real food. Being Vegetarian was a choice, but I am pretty sure that if I was not, then good quality organic meats, fishes and eggs should not cause someone to break out. For me, eggs and fish did not cause me to break out. Unfortunately, the meat industry is notorious for abusing animals and pumping them full of hormones, medications, poor quality feeds and awful living environments. So with that said, a lot of meat can and does cause acne. It depends on the quality. Most store bought meat is probably awful for you, even if you are a meat eater. I'll have a diet and recipe blog soon... Do you eat organic? I always prefer organic and extremely low processed foods if they’re available. How much money do you spend on food? Eating the way I am now is cheaper, with the only 'issue' being that you may have to shop every few days rather than every few weeks. Depending on the season will depend on how available the food is, and much the local produce will cost. With that said, I spend about $50-$100 a week on groceries on average. But I also live with with other people, and we buy more to serve each other, which in the long run is also cheaper. Fresh produce is large, bulky, takes up a lot of fridge space, and will go bad fast if not used right away, so try keeping track of your receipts and gas trips until you find what works for you. I save money and time by combining my food shopping with other errands. Most produce remains refrigerated until I use them, and I only peel/cut/wash the produce the instant I start prepping/cooking/juicing with them. I wash everything in a small bowl full of cool water and with a vegetable brush. Sometimes I use vinegar too. I started this lifestyle with a small fridge and pathetic kitchen, so anyone should be able to do this. How is your energy level? High. It's always been high. Eating more healthy now has not changed my energy levels. What about fatigue? I don't worry about fatigue, because no matter what you eat you will always be fatigued. People love to make the excuse that eating more vegetables wipes them out and that they are always cranky and can't stand the way they feel. Well guess what, they say the same thing about everything else they eat when the realize that it's probably not good for them. This is a sensitive topic to a lot of people, surprisingly. To me, being fatigued means normal, basic living, and a combination of everything you do. It could be emotions, work, lack of sleep, and of course what you eat. It could be two of these things, or all of them at once. Anything and everything I eat always has an effect on me... I can feel my vegetable juice run through my stomach, and then my body. Most of the time it's blissful and pleasant, but other times it can make me feel incredibly sleepy. Do not concern yourself with trivial matters such as this... but please do not ignore what you may feel might be a very bad symptom of food allergies and/or another kind of underlying health issue. How many times do you eat a day? I don't worry about how many times I eat a day. I eat whenever I get the chance and whenever I need to do so. But if you're picky then I'd say an average of twice a day, with one snack. I can eat around 1 to 5 times a day, and sometimes I fast. I seldom I sit down an eat a supper large meal. I also rarely eat and drink at the same time. I drink water periodically throughout the day, always keeping myself hydrated. Sometimes I'll wait a few hours before eating and/or drinking, it all depends on what I'm doing. So... What DID you use to eat? Candy, pop, chocolate, breads and bakeries, fruits, vegetables, soups, pizza, pastas, etc… I ate a variety of healthy things AND junk food. Whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. The majority of my diet was breads, pastas, bakeries, cereals, candies and sweets, milk, soda, and juices. I use to commonly buy overly processed sweet coffee-like drinks, pour vast amounts of syrups and dressings over my weekend morning iHop pancakes, and at rib-fests I would joyfully tare the fleshy over-sauced meat off those poor dead animal’s flesh and bones clean off. At first none of what I listed above sounds bad for most people at all, but after reading several forums and stories on this website, as well as going to the library for years and reading one nutritional book after another, I eventually realized how terrible these things actually were. I hide nothing and admit everything. Why? because I wanted to get rid of my acne, and improve my overall quality of life. But please keep in mind that I didn't just eat all of these things at once, nor did I eat them every week. These are things that I simply had no problem swallowing, and was completely ignorant and oblivious of their effects on the body... I am simply remembering what I use to eat. I obviously ate healthy food too. I use to have candy about once a week and soda every other day. Hell, I was eating ice cream every night whilst anonymously reading acne forums on this website before i joined! If I wanted something sweet all day and healthy the next day, then I would just eat it. This is not the case anymore (with crap food that is). Do you still eat candy/ice cream/pudding/sugary sweets? No. If I want dessert then I make my own. When I tried doing that in the past, I did several things wrong. I realize what I was doing was not read the labels and ingredients correctly, and I didn't replace my diet with more nutritious food at the same time. You can't just get rid of the bad stuff, you also have to eat the good stuff! Do you drink milk/eat ANY kind of dairy product? No. No. No. HELL. NO. Before I could drink up to 1 to 3 glasses of milk a day, as well as cheesing up my eggs and other foods, but I literally quit milk when I was 22 years old (when I joined this website and read about health for a few months). However, this took a while to learn, even when I was a member here because I have been fooled by some products before, such as chocolates, breads, canned foods, etc... Milk is a huge stimulant for my acne and especially my cystic acne. Being extra careful in the beginning was the only way that I could guaranteed my acne would go away. Now I'm just use to it and don't even think about it anymore. But I can tell you that I once accidentally ate a stir-fry with melted cheese all over it... and nothing happened. Although I can not say for certain why that was, I do feel that it was because of my overall healthy diet. I got a little cocky after that and thought I could have cheese again, or at least cooked cheese, but even once a week for four weeks was enough to kick start my acne cysts all over again. So now I am aware that if anything like that happens again, the body should know what to do with it, but it’s not going to be used for something it can’t handle. So now you don't eat/drink sugar AND dairy products? Correct. However, there is sugar in everything we eat, including fruit. With that said I do eat one any kind of fruit I want every do often, so I guess we have to be realistic when it comes to the word "sugar". Did you ever stop drinking milk AND eating sugar at the same time BEFORE this website? No, never. What about Gluten? I don't eat bread or gluten-containing products anymore. Bread = Sugar to me, or at least most breads, so I eventually cut them out. Before I was eating them sometimes, but when I took wheat products out of my diet, my skin went from 90 percent to 100 percent clear. I am not interested in gluten free products because they are a health scam in my eyes: just because they took out the gluten doesn't mean the product is more healthy, it means that they replaced it with ingredients that act like gluten would... only they're twice as bad for you. I eat things such as oatmeal but not often. I make my own flours in a blender if I feel like it. So you changed your diet for good? Yes. After joining this website I've seen how nutrition and diet plays a role in our acne. How many servings/meals do you eat a day? Like I said before, I don't actually eat "meals" but will about 1-5 times a day. What do you drink now? Water, hot tea, coffee and hot chocolate (homemade). I enjoy loose leaf teas the most, organic and fair trade if I can find it. I have found many kinds of loose leaf green, white, chamomile, and Darjeeling teas off the internet and at my local vitamin shops. Those are my favorite flavors. I drink as much tea as I want, whenever I feel like it. If I drink coffee, I use non-dairy creamers except soy milk because I feel that soy products are is pretty damn bad for you, actually. I also feel that they effect people who like to work out a lot, such as myself. Go for Almond, Coconut, Hemp, Oat ad Rice Milk instead. I RARELY, RARELY, RARELY sweeten my coffee with Organic Cane Sugar, and I can not stress enough the word RARELY. I am successful with this because of my entire diet in general. If not that kind of sugar, then I actually use honey or even jams and jelly's. Loose leaf tea lasts longer than the pouched tea because I can add as many dried up leaves as I like. A little goes a long way. I would recommend buying a huge bag for 9-20 dollars and having it last half a year to one year in your household I have always drank hot tea though, ever since high school. Being a tea drinker alone didn't cause or cure my acne, I just happened to like it. I also sweeten my tea with honey, ut not all the time. How much water do you drink a day? I usually carry around a 20oz black reusable metal water container with me wherever I go, and I drink anywhere from 2-5 fillings of it a day. I usually don't eat and drink at the same time, but if I do I won't drink a lot just a little. Each day is different. If I am working out or walking then I'll drink more. How often do you urinate/produce waste? Well... if you must know I urinate about once every hour or so. Yes, that can be an average of about 6-12 times a day. I often stop drinking water approximately 1-2 hours before I go to sleep because I dislike waking up in the middle of the night to pee... always annoying and hurts my stomach. Before my diet change, I produced waste only once every other day. Ever since I started drinking my homemade vegetable juice and/or eating more vegetables, I suddenly can produce waste up to three times a day. For a while that was just way too much, so I read a few books and later discovered that chewing my food much longer than I normally would actually slows down the waste production, and it did. So now it's about 1-3 times a day. What about your scars? Don't care. Getting rid of the acne was satisfying enough for me. I have far more important things I'd like to do in life then see how close I can get to having 'flawless skin'. My scars do not phase me in the slightest, and I wouldn't treat them even if it was for free. With as long as my acne had been around, and how severe it was, I knew since I was a teenager that my skin was going through a lot, and I would probably be scared for life. I am of course aware of scar treatments, however, and I certainly don't condemn people at all for wanting to do them and get rid of as many of those holes on their face as possible. As you may have guessed if you read some of this article, I am a different person when it comes to what I value in life and what I find the most interesting. Humans are not meant to be packaged, contained and plastic wrapped to perfection, sitting on the shelf in mint condition, never to be used. A flawless face is not the pinnacle of life. But if you do want to treat you scars, then prevention, prevention, prevention. And if you don't have acne anymore, then water, water, water. Stay hydrated, and look into Chemical Peels, Lemon and ACV Treatments, and surgeries. Red marks DO take a while to go away, but they do fade. Make sure you get to the heart of the bee's nest first before dealing with scars. In fact, on a good diet, everything about your skin and overall quality of life begins to improve. For me, my red marks began fading away after only a few months, and my skin tone began neutralizing and evening out again. This overall effects the quality of my scars appearance, and my attitude with them. ------------------- Sorry for all the piss and crap talk, but these are actual questions that people have been asking me during my time here.   2. So the red splotches and whiteheads that formed after the sugar scrub are now subsiding, so that's good. Still drinking only juice and water. This time was much easier to start juice fasting because my body has been totally detoxed from carbs so I don't crave them at all. Yes, I do miss the taste of them, but my body isn't like, "GIVE ME CARBS". I'm really happy I am reintroducing foods one at a time after this - it's going to give me so much clarity as to what causes my acne. I'm also hoping that I can stick to this no foundation thing forever. I love not having to worry about putting it on before I go out or taking it off at night. Part of me is hoping that makeup was the issue the whole time and I'll be able to eat whatever the heck I want! But let's be realistic. That's probably not the case. *sigh* Another benefit of juice fasting is I have SO MUCH free time now! I am amazed at how much time we spend preparing and eating food. It's kind of crazy...
  3. Hi everyone. As the title says, a tapeworm came out during my bowel this morning. Here's a brief story of my diet. I am trying to clear my acne with the below regimens I am currently on my 10th day of my 30days smoothie/juicing diet. The recipe includes : 90% vegetables 10% fruit Spinach Parsley Bitter gourd Celery Kiwi sometimes green apple Coconut Oil Almond Milk Chia Seeds avocado I drink this smoothie twice everyday, in the morning and night. Beside the smoothie, I eat steamed cauliflower, brocolli, and bittergourd during lunch consistently. My dinner is chia seeds pudding with avocado and almond milk. I drink 2 liters of lemon water everyday, I eat sauerkraut as well. I am taking cod liver oil and milk thistle supplements. I am not sure how the tapeworm came out. Anyone experience this? Edit : Before I forgot, I am doing the castor oil pack as well. I am on my third night last night. I rub the castor oil on my right abdomen for 15 mins then put a cloth and the hot water bag for 45mins-1hr.
  4. Alright, so I've had problems with acne however it is only concentrated on my forehead and nose. My cheeks and chin are completely clear. So, I think this has to do with my problems with picking and shitty diet. There are three things I must do/follow towards clear skin. I did them before (kind of) and my face started to clear up. Then, I fucked it up by (tonight) going into a 10x magnifying mirror and ripping my face apart, every blackhead, clogged pore, white head, undertheskin pimple, everything. BAD!! So hopefully (crosses my fingers) I will be able to follow this for AT LEAST 6 days straight: 1. One full 24 oz homemade vegetable juice 2. Absolutely no picking 3. Stick to my normal simple organic skincare regimen As of 12/2/15 8:30 PM: Skin pissed off... No HUGE pimples but all small pores are red and angry. Couple pimples on sides of nose, blackheads on nose as well. Forehead up by hairline has cluster of clogged pore pimples (idek what they are), scared of small infection. Many red areas on forehead where I squeezed. Pimple on left side. Dry skin. Period in 3 days could be causing this. Didn't juice. Didn't stick to my regimen... used isopropyl alcohol super drying which was stupid but i felt like i needed to kill the bacteria on the white heads. Hoping for a change tomorrow

After struggling with horrible acne for 20+ years, I am clear! Here's what I am doing. 500 mg sustained release Pantothenic Acid 2x a day 500 mg L-Carnitine once a day with Pantothenic acid ( with a meal) try to reduce sugar intake lots of water Juice DAILY Always sweet potato with someting else like cucumber, celery, beet, etc. I use a mild cleaner - but nothing moisturizing, because I have oily skin. Also use Stridex pads just because it helps the appearance of my skin. But read Winged Serpent's page - it works!!

    Finished the summer off right. Went out to eat many times these past few days, eating whatever the f I wanted. Went grocery shopping today. Today is day 1 for me. As of today, I have two zits on left cheek drying up. A tiny one drying up on my right cheek. 3-5 drying up on my chin and two drying up on my forehead. Mind you, I ate a little bit of everything yesterday so a little dairy, gluten, nightshades, etc. Being good from here on out. I will update in a week! Pictures too!   7. Milk Free Diet Cleared My Cystic Acne, And.... ... Eliminating Sugar and most High GI/GL (Glycemic Index/Glycemic Load) foods cleared the rest of my 'white heads'. This worked for me, and will work for you. What I have been able to learn and understand for the past several years is that each and every person is different, and everyone will need to find what works for them and them alone. No one can do it for you, but this will do more for you than you could ever imagine. If anyone wants to see my skin pictures, I've left them up in my galleries. They are all completely PUBLIC. I considered coming back on occasionally to update some information, but my personal blog would be more than sufficient to answer any and all questions. If anyone wants to put this post into a more recent success thread, then please do so that others may see this. -------------------------------------- I joined this website when I was 22 years old, completely cleared when I was 23-ish/24, and am now currently 30. I came back to adjust some old information and update a few FAQs, as well as respond to several followers who were asking me questions. Hopefully this post, as well as my FAQs page shown in my signature bellow, will answer most questions so that you make the diet and lifestyle changes you need for healthier skin AND healthier life. This is what you need to do if you have severe and long-term cystic acne: 1.) Put aside some time for yourself so that you may learn about acne and what it actually is. The past and even the future is not important, what's important is what you do HERE and NOW. Not what you did last week or what you'll do in 5 minutes... it's what you'll do NOW. 2.) If it's at all possible, get a blood test done at a clinic or doctor's office. Nothing fancy, whatever you can afford, although more data is probably more beneficial. It's always best to know where your starting from and where you stand when it comes to your health, and to make sure that you are ready for a GRADUAL diet change. 3.) Completely get rid of all your milk and milk-containing products for about three months to one year. And I mean everything. Yes, this includes pizza, yogurts, ice cream, milk creamers for coffee, several packaged and boxed foods, dressings and sauces… this also includes butter, powdered and evaporated milk, unique preservatives, etc. anything and everything with milk in it. Not just cows milk, ALL milk. As long as it is milk, it is a hormone. Milk is milk, it is not water. It is meant to make you grow, and it's purpose is to carry large amounts of NATURAL HORMONES into your body. So read labels: If it contains milk, skip it. Most supermarket mil comes from cows, and most cows are injected with growth hormones, which makes this process even worse than any raw specialty milk you may find at farmer’s markets. I am heavily emphasizing a three to twelve month time period because from what I have researched and experienced, some people responded well to only a few weeks to a few months but others were so bad that it took an entire year for their skin inflammation and acne to settle down. This is due to the high amount of dietary hormones running in their system. I am also not sure if fermenting your own milk-based kefir or yogurt will work, but for me it also didn’t... at least not in my early years. Maybe it's acceptable for someone to have fermented milk every now and then, or maybe the IGF-1 Growth Hormone that aggravates acne in acne prone people is killed off by heat when it is fermented and cooked, which might explain why homemade yogurt is beneficial to some with acne and not harmful. This is extremely difficult to tell unless you can somehow manage to track your skin at this time and know exactly where you are. Personally, I recommend getting ALL dairy out of your system and seeing if you skin clears FIRST before assuming that you may or may not have melted/cooked milk and fermented milk products. 4.) Get rid of as much sugar from your diet as you can... white refined table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, cereals, ketchup, breads, preservatives, etc., and instead retrain your taste buds to enjoy the more natural, sweeter side of your foods. This is especially true for your vegetables. 5.) Go to your local library (and/or free PDF Internet databases) and find/research charts with High Glycemic Index/Loads foods. Begin omitting as many blood sugar raising foods as possible. This is completely and 100 percent possible without putting your overall health in a nutrient deficient state. You'll want to change your diet as calmly and safely as possible, but not to the point where you feel as though you are starving yourself. Drink a minimum amount of 4 bottles of water a day (does not have to be bottled). 8.) Sleep 7-8+ hours a day if possible. 9.) Do not stress about your acne. There are millions of other things you could be doing or not doing, and getting it off your mind is important so that you are open and available to everything else in life. Learn better things. I was able to be stress-free the entire time I was learning, and created great positive energy and inspiration from the entire experience. I had no idea if and when my acne would go away, no guarantees, no ‘easy’ path, no ‘one-time answer/cure’, and no one to turn to for help, but I deeply knew that my diet played a huge part in it. I remained calm, centered, and absorbed everything I could. Learn, be open, relax and breathe. 10.) Walk, or at least create an exercise regimen. Don't just strenuously run for long periods of time, just walk if you are not able to do anything else. Walk for long distances if possible, and enjoy every single step you take. Do it at least once a day, two times a day being your best bet. If I don't walk, I am already naturally moving around a lot throughout my entire day, or have been training in such activities like AiKido. Don't turn it into something you won't enjoy, and don't think/worry about it anything much, otherwise you'll just end up hurting yourself and your skin even more. ------------------------------------ You're not going to like this answer, but no matter what I tell you or how much you read, you'll never find out what works for you until you do something. I'm not you and you're not me. But I do know that a diet change will help you, and you'll never know yourself unless you try, and honestly try. Truthfully, honestly, and knowingly try. You have to want this, not want to want this. See the benefits, see the possibilities, and explore. Be brave, and watch everything you say, do, think, and realize. Just begin. A diet change helped me greatly, and it will help you too. My diet is basically vegetables, fruits, beans/lentils, and SOME nuts/seeds. It is a beautiful, vast, powerful lifestyle, and is something that we all benefit from, and it has no name. It is not a magic pill, but it does allow for magic and creativity to be born within you. Also, despite what some articles say about High GI/GL foods, I still occasionally eat potatoes and rice. I do not eat meat due to compassion for all living things. I do not eat eggs because they are cholesterol raising and heavy for the heart. I drink mainly water and fresh, hot tea (real, loose leaf tea, not the bagged kind) almost every single day. Once in a while I'll fast. I take no vitamins and supplements since they are not necessary on a wholesome, real foods diet. All my fruit is usually eaten raw, and the vegetables I eat are either fresh (raw) or bought fresh/frozen and then steamed/boiled/stir-fired/baked. I avoid probably around 90 percent of most average westernized grocery stores. Nothing I do is scheduled or recorded. I simply live my life to the best extent I can, eat when I need to, sleep when I have to, and I always find ways to enjoy whatever I do and whenever I do it. I've spent less money, sopped washing my face with harsh chemicals, stopped putting my hair up, stopped visiting my dermatologist, and stopped having cystic acne. I honestly cannot see what others have to lose, but I do understand that a diet and, let's face it, a lifestyle change, is not something people are anxious to do. I didn't care for the diet I had before, so this wasn't a problem for me. Maybe you do care about your diet, in which case you may need to work on how to get off it, and be ready. If you're having difficulty wanting to change the way you eat and live, then try putting some time aside and watch a few of these movies bellow. They may help you make the diet change. I'm not trying to shove Raw Food-ism, Veganism, Vegetarianism, Paleo Diet-ism, Cave Man-ism or whatever kind of diet into your face. I'm just giving you the suggestion that you should definitely be exploring all other ways and alternatives before going to the extreme with pills, lasers, steroids and all those other chemicals most of us have sought out at least one point in our lives. I am also not suggesting that you not talk to a doctor or nutritionist first before making changes. Certainly get yourself checked out if you suspect something is wrong with you, or you just to make sure nothing else is wrong. If you can't afford that, network and find some good trusting friends in a similar field who may be able to help. I am not on any particular diet, nor am I choosing a side of the nutrition war. I am simply myself... nothing more. My diet has no name. I am as natural and organic and I can be with exceptions that I know my body can handle. I make most of my own food and found things that I liked to create. Telling you every detail of my diet would be impossible since I am natural and constantly changing. I enjoy and love all the varieties that life has to offer when it comes to food. Again, I will say that the biggest thing that helped me with my cystic acne and white heads would be NO MILK, NO SUGARS (table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc.), and NO (OR VERY FEW) HIGH GI/GL FOODS with lots of water, vegetables and fruits. Certainly, always consume more vegetables than fruit. That's right. Acne AND Eczema. People have asked me if they were possibly related to the same "cause", and I’m pretty sure they were. I have never met anyone else like myself, and very few people online with this double-sided nightmare. After doing a lot of extra reading, I discovered that many skin issues come from the gut, and that it is possible and common for someone to have more than one kind of skin issue at a time. In fact, it's more common that inflammation is hidden under the skin and/or inside the body, not just exposed outwardly like mine was. My eczema's outbreak was not milk, like milk was for most of my cystic acne. It was actually food intolerance's, and the body trying to constantly detox itself without fully understanding what was going on. That particular food was tomatoes. Eczema had been with me most of my life, longer than the acne was, and no one ever really knew the cause of it. Most of the time it was just dry and slightly red, but a few times it was bright red and painfully burned. My family and I just assumed that it was incurable, and I was given topical steroids and creams to make the rash go away. Most of the time the creams worked, but sometimes they didn't. My rash mostly appears on the bend of my arms, and s a child it was behind the kneecap and on my feet. During my early 20's, it started to spread all over my fingers, hands and face, but the other areas disappeared. Eating healthy for my acne ironically inspired me to go on what most people would call an ‘Elimination Diet’. I joined acne.org after a year of reading online articles from it, and while doing the Acne.org regimen I began to expanding my research into other community boards as well, eventually finding my way into the diet and holistic health stuff. I had always deeply suspected that my diet played a role in my skin. I was surprised that acne could be "cured" by diet and lifestyle changes, I without hesitation I immediately started eating more vegetables and fruits, simultaneously omitting tons of other things. It was all over my face, arms and hands. I suspected tomatoes when I was getting nauseous and from my rash flaring up immediately from eating them. When I took them out of my diet, my rash immediately stopped reacting. After a few months of wrapping and moisturizing my rashes, they too began to heal. My skin literally began changing; Fresh, new skin began to show where the eczema had overtaken. My rash was basically due to a mixture of detoxing, and not being able to handle tomatoes. If I weren’t trying to eat healthy to get rid of my acne, I would have never discovered this. Unfortunately, after several allergy tests and an endoscopy, my doctors couldn’t find any evidence of a gut problem within me, only to avoid whatever it was I was eating. Is avoidance a cure? Yes and No. It’s a cure in a sense that you no longer have the rash, and no because it’s not the magic pill that people are looking for when they still want to consume the produce. Also, after about seven years of avoiding tomatoes, I was able to eat them again. I have heard similar stories from people who were allergic to things such as onions, strawberries, etc. since childhood, only to realize that they grew out of it. Some people do not, which is often the case for allergies related to nuts, peanuts and other harsh chemicals, but it’s still worth safely exploring and discovering. No matter what happens, we must accept what we are given if we are to go beyond the past a move on with the natural changes of the universe. This may not be what everyone likes to hear, but it's the closest thing to truth that can be understood. Rubbing Apple Cider Vinegar (diluted) on my hands seemed to help keep the redness, itching and blisters disinfected, but it painfully stung when the blisters were open. Diluted ACV is also great for getting rid of ringworm, athlete’s foot, and eczema caused by direct mold/bacteria contact situation. Unlike alcohol, ACV does not dry out your skin and even leaves it soft. People say there is no "cure" for eczema, but I am convinced that that's because they refused to get rid of their daily allergens, which over time overwhelms their bodily systems and becomes the "cause". Why did no one else in my family suffer Eczema like I did? I don't know, but I was also the only one to discover and admit that my diet and lifestyle was terrible for a young female like myself. I now know and understand that my gut went out of whack with the overwhelmingly polluted and unhealthy diet and lifestyle environments that society had to offer, and that the physical allergens and pesticide carrying food was too strong for my already unhealthy and exhausted body and skin to keep up with. So no matter what people say to you, do not be tempted by their lazy and over simplified statements that what you eat does not affect you. Others will not understand our skin because they simply do not have what we do, and do not experience what we went through. After a failed attempt with Saw Palmetto (for acne & facial hair;result: disaster zone), birth control (Ocella for 3 days, I broke out immediately), Retin A (peeling, redness, sensitivity and even worse with Differin), Minocycline (it's just okay, but someday the body will resist), No more vitamins and herbs, such a waste of money -except L-lysine (helps my skin heal quicker, its awesome, and juicing (ahhh juicing ...juicing WORKED!) My skin never looked better. I first tried fresh juice in high school when my mother opened a health shop, all the free juice I wanted for a year or so. I bought my own juicer last month. My problem area is my forehead, severe congestion, under the skin. Its just the buildup of dead skin cells and oil, and around hairline/jaw cysts. Cutting out the excess sugars (goodbye red vines, gobstoppers and peanut M&MS) and adding veggies and fruit drastically can improve your skin, just as it did mine. I chose beets (detoxes-I put this in every drink!But don't over do it, it can be toxic if too much is ingested), ginger (perfect for a cold or tummy ache) and others listed below. I made my own brightening/lightening serum, moisturizer as well, because everything clogs my pores. Major difference =) My favorites: Beets Carrots Cucumber Celery Spinach Ginger Kale lemon And lots of smoothies, vanilla yogurt, bananas, blueberries, strawberry, flaxseed, oranges...mix fruits with veggies if you want something sweeter. I bought a set of maybe 12 mason jars at walmart for $9 and juice everything I need for a week. I should have done this a long time ago. I will continue with this regime: Juicing simple basic skincare, Clarisonic +Andalou Natural kombucha cleanser tea tree oil as "toner" sodium pca moisture my homemade lighten/brighten serum Formulating a spf right now my homemade sulfur brighten/lighten mask weekly Manuka honey mask weekly Green tea in the AM only As for the excess facial hair, I am going to a few more consultations for laser hair removal.   10. Lot of people in this forum have found benefits by juicing vegetables including myself. You can share your own recipe if you have one but here is mine. 2-3 Carrots (high in beta-carotene a.k.a Vitamin A) 3 stalks Celery ( reduces blood sugar and pressure) 1/2 Cucumber ( reduces blood sugar and pressure) 1/4 Beet (Optional, detoxifies liver, blood) 2-3 Dandelion green leaves ( detoxifies liver) pinch of Ginger (boosts immune system) Some additional thoughts: Juice needs to taken 1 cup daily preferably warm in an empty stomach. Above 1 cup is an overdose as it is taxing to kidneys. Wheat grass/Barley grass juice also supposedly helps clear acne. Beet juice is very powerful and needs to be used sparingly as it is high in oxalic acid. Cutting down acne triggers cola, caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, junk food etc. increases the effectiveness of juice. I know first hand the devastation that acne can wreak in people's lives -I had cystic acne from age 14 to 40. I have been clear for over 4 years now and this is how I did it. If I managed it, I am convinced that you can too. These steps transformed my quality of life and I hope they can help other people. There are 4 simple steps: 1. Vegetable juice. 2. Removal of sugar from diet 3. Low B5 supplementation 4. Increased water consumption My view After 26 years, I became convinced that intractable adult acne is the result of a systemic failure in the body. If topical treatments could work for you, they would have worked by now. You wouldn't be reading this page. Accepting that fact is not easy for some people, but it is the crucial step in adopting an effective holistic program. It's what I did when I turned 40 and how I managed to clear my skin. I am not a doctor or a dermatologist or a nutritionist. I am regular guy who created this regime from reading and researching what other people had found out and combining it. I simply asked myself two questions: What has come up again and again as producing the best results? Is it possible to combine it into one program? The hypothesis behind this program is that there is a synergistic effect between all four elements, in that the power of the regime as a whole is greater then the sum of the parts. If you omit any one element then you are undermining the logic behind the treatment and hampering your chances of success. My regime 1. Vegetable juice. THIS IS THE KEY ELEMENT OF THE REGIME! I bought a jucier for £100 (about $160). Every day I make up 1 pint of vegetable juice. I generally drink it on an empty stomach. Among my favourites are sweet potatoes or carrots cucumber beetroot vine tomatoes bell pepper celery butternut squash anything else that juices -although dark green vegetetables are often bitter so use sparingly! But I've come to believe you can pretty much use any vegetables, and in fact, it's much better to vary your juice as widely as possible. Carrots tend to be the first thing people juice, but I advise restraint. They are high in sugar. I would restrict their use to every other day at maximum. Similarly with beets. If you after beta carotene, it is far better to use sweet potatoes or butternut squash. Among the very best vegetables for the skin are kale and spinach. Being leaves, a budget juicer won't juice them, you will need to add the juice and the leaves mixture into a blender. I tend to buy organic because I can afford it, but I don't think it realy makes much difference to the effectiveness of the treatment. It takes 5 minutes to chop and juice the vegetables, 5 minutes to drink, 5 minutes to clean the jucier. For 15 minutes effort you are taking therapeutic levels of nutrients. This is a list of the nutrients in a typical glass of juice I make: Vitamin A Vitamin B1 Vitamin B2 Vitamin B3 Vitamin B5 Vitamin B9 Vitamin B12 Vitamin C Vitamin D Vitamin E Vitamin K Betain Calcium Choline Copper Iron Magnesium Manganese Omega 3 Potassium Protein Phosphorus Selenium Zinc and of course, water Also: 10 essential amino acids Anti-oxidants such as Quercetin, Kaempferol and Lypocene all linked with anti-cancer and anti-heart-disease properties. Anti-inflammatories Imagine this powerhouse of nutrients hitting your system first thing every day, in a liquid form quickly absorbed by the body. Now compare that to the breakfast you currently eat. 2. Removal of sugar from the diet I'm not going to discuss the whole sugar-acne thing. All I will say is that I noticed huge reductions in the oiliness of my skin when I cut out sugar. I stopped all discretionary sugar items: cakes, confectionary, chocolate, soda, sweets, etc. I didn't go so far as to stop eating processed foods with added sugar, since you have to be practical. Almost everything has sugar added to it. It doesn't matter eating a little -it's the huge spikes in blood sugar that come from eating things like donuts and cola that you want to avoid. See the FAQ below for why I juice 'high-sugar' vegetables and how this fits in with removing sugar from the diet. 3. Supplements I don't believe in megadosing. I think it's dangerous. I strongly advise anyone considering megadosing vitamins to think again. See the FAQ below for more on this. I take time release 500mg of B5. Incidentally, way before the recent B5 studies, it was known that B5 had a beneficial effect on acne even at low doses. Adele Davies in her book "Let's Get Well" (I think published back in the 60s) noted cases that cleared up by taking just this amount -500mg. B5 hasn't caused me any problems. However, the possible side effects of B5 (mentioned with much larger doses than 500mg I recommend) are related to the fact that it can in theory crowd out other B vitamins. So it is possible in the longer term to suffer deficiency symptoms of other B vitamins. It is therefore very important that you eat a good diet, one rich in B vitamins, and to monitor yourself for any conditions like itching scalp or dry lips. For this reason I now sprinkle powdered wheatgerm into my food once a day. The bottom line is that we all have different metabolisms and what may be okay for me, may be too much for you. I only mention this for the sake of completeness -it's always wise to have as much information about the subject as possible. 4. Water consumption I increased water consumption by 1-2 pints a day. Hydration of the skin is always beneficial. Note, however, that I am not advocating forcing down pints of water for the sake of it. I noticed that I would often wake up in the night, thirsty, so I started drinking a pint of water before going to bed. That's all. This meant my body was always adequately supplied with fluids. The results I experienced There is no such thing as an overnight cure. We've all read posts along the lines of "WOW! I started taking xxxx on Monday and three days later my acne has ALL GONE!!" These posts are often well-intentioned but they suffer from obvious problems: 1. You need to be able to sustain a 'cure' for months and years, to have confidence that it really works. 2. No problem in the human body heals overnight. Think about it. When did you last go to the doctor with some ailment and he said to you, "Just take one of these pills tonight, and tomorrow you'll be cured." Even antibiotics, among the most powerful and targetted drugs available, take about a week to ten days to work. And that's on temporary infections. Any problem you've had for years is going to disappear gradually, not overnight. If you've reached your 30s or 40s with acne, then it's clear that no short term approach will work for you. If there was a short term treatment, you would have found it by now. Only the long term treatments remain. I know that's an unpalatable truth for many people reading this, but it is the truth nonetheless. It is essential, therefore, that you recalibrate your expectations from seeing results in days, to seeing results in weeks, or months. So many acne treatments promise 'visible results in just five days' but this is not a realistic scenario for adult acne. Accepting that requires a fundamental shift in your mindset. With that in mind, here is the timeline I experienced: 1. Five Days Energy levels much higher. Elevated mood levels. No visible skin benefit. 2. Two Weeks Skin felt unusually soft, smooth and younger-looking. Noticeable oil reduction. No improvement to acne. 3. Six weeks Oil overproduction no longer a problem. Number of existing lesions diminished. New acne still appearing but heals faster. Unsolicited comments from people about how well I was looking. 4. Three months Acne had completely disappeared, and has never returned. Note that this is my experience. Some people have reported faster results than this, others slower. FAQ (periodically updated as new questions arise) I strongly advise you to read this FAQ. It covers a lot more ground than the basics above. GENERAL QUESTIONS I've been through all these so-called 'cures'. Why is this one any different? I'm not saying I can cure your acne. What I can say is that it worked for me and I had cystic acne for 26 years. If it can help me it is almost certainly able to help others. You may be one of them. Who are you and how did you develop this program? At the age of 40 I decided that I was going to try my best to kill my acne once and for all, and rather than hopping about from one quack remedy to another as I had done for the past two decades, I would develop a logical treatment based upon the best available clinical and anecdotal evidence. I concluded that if I could combine the elements most likely to help into one program then I would stand the best chance of a 'cure'. From searching the internet and reading widely a consensus of opinion emerged: sugar-elimination, vegetable juice, B5 supplementation. I'm not a healthcare professional. Nothing in this post constitutes medical advice. I am simply putting my own experience into the public domain. How you use this information is entirely up to you. So how does it work? I'm not a scientist. But my hypothesis is that the elements of treatment work together to create a more powerful effect than the sum of their parts. But it's basically healthy eating, right? No. Just eating 'healthily' won't work because there are not enough nutrients in whole food (and they are absorbed too slowly) to fix the problem. Juice is like a mainline of nutrients over and above regular meals. Juicing is not a substitute for poor meals. You still need to consider the amount of fibre, omega 3, calcium, etc that you are getting from whole food. Also, when people talk about eating 'healthily' in connection with acne, they nearly always focus on food elimination, and not food inclusion. Cutting out suspected trigger foods is not healthy eating. The key is the nutrients you supply to the body, not what you remove. In what ways does your regime differ from all the other threads here about diet? It doesn't. My regime concurs with the basic principles of most dietary-based approaches. That's because I took the elements that crop up again and again and put them into one regime. There is an increasing body of evidence to support these principles, rather than them just being someone's opinion. Although there is the occasional person on these forums who achieved clear skin through stopping eating bread, for example, I think these cases are very rare. For most of us, the key is what you DO eat, not what you DON'T. Vegetable juice will have more effect in your skin than stopping bread, chocolate, dairy, processed foods, meat combined. Will it work on teenage acne? In principle, I don't see why not. But common sense would suggest that there is something fundamentally different going on between the 90% of teenagers who get acne and the 5% of 35 year olds. Furthermore, all the doses (and that includes the juice) are meant for adults. Not matter how grown-up you may feel, teenage physiology is not the same as that of a thirty or forty-year old. You are still growing. Your internal organs are not the same size. Your hormonal situation is different. You don't have the same tolerances. Most prescription drugs usually stipulate a reduced dosage for children under 16 or under 12, or sometimes it's not allowed at all. So, I'm not recommending it for people under 18. It's listed under 'Adult Acne' for a reason. Please do not disregard this advice. If you choose to, then whatever you do, make sure that you cut the doses by at least 50%. And that includes the juice. JUICING The more juice I drink, the better, right? No! Doing anything to excess is not a good idea. Don't exceed my recommended dose. Can I drink commercial vegetable juice like V8 instead of making my own? No. Commercial juices have been centrifuged and pasteurised to destroy bacteria. This also destroys many of the nutrients. They have also been bottled many weeks, if not months, in advance. This also degrades the nutrient content. Furthermore, juices like V8 usually have high levels of added salt which is bad for you. Freshly-juiced vegetables from commercial juice bars are fine, but relatively expensive. Can you recommend any juice recipes? I'm not bothered what the juice tastes like; I just want the nutritional benefit. But if you want the juice to taste delicious, there are plenty of juicing websites with recipe blends. Your juice seems very high in sugar. How does fit in with removing sugar from your diet? The average American eats just one vegetable per day (and the average Brit, let's be fair). But they also eat candy bars, soda, and all manner of other very-high sugar foods. By removing these and juicing more vegetables you are still taking far less sugar and getting the intense nutritional benefits of vegetables. The only high-sugar items on my list are carrots and beets. Most vegetables are not high in sugar. Can you recommend a juicer? I use the L'equip 110.5, which has been highly recommended by many juicing websites. It's well built, easy to use and clean, has a decent warranty, and is reasonably priced. It does the job. I would not advise buying a juicer from a department store on the recommendation of a sales person. They'll sell you any old tat, often models that are difficult to clean or not even specialised juicers, but food processors which don't do a great job. The main things to consider are: 1. How easy it is to clean? If it's difficult to clean you wont want to use it. You should be able to do the whole thing in 5 minutes. This is the main thing to check out. 2. How noisy is it? If you've got close neighbours you're not going to be able use it at the crack of dawn. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a workmanlike juicer that will last a number of years. I recommend spending about £160 (US $100) on your first model. If that sounds like a lot to you, think of it this way. If it lasts 3 years, that's just $1 a week for probably the single greatest thing you can do for your skin (and your health). Now think of other things that you normally spend $1 a week on. Which is more important? If you are on a budget, then it is possible to juice using a normal food blender and then straining the mixture afterwards to separate out the juice from the fibre. How should I clean the vegetables? I use a vegetable brush. It is important to clean them well. Should I buy organic? I'm in two minds. Part of me suspects that the 'organic' foods you buy from supermarkets are little different to the regular kind. However, I think it's a big benefit if you can source your organic veggies locally from a farm, which I now do. But I hate the taste of vegetable juice. Carrots and beetroot are sweet, not bitter. I think my blend of vegetable juice is delicious. The 'difficult' vegetables are the dark green leafy ones, which certainly you want to use sparingly. Just experiment until you find a blend you like. I can't be bothered with juicing -it sounds like a lot of work. As I said, it takes just 15 minutes. I would also hazard that you probably already spend at least 15 minutes a day on the topical treatments for your skin. This will being bring better results. Should I drink it on an empty stomach? Yes. Should I drink it in one dose or a half dose twice a day? Logic would indicate that splitting it into two separate doses would more effective. But then you've got to clean the juicer twice. Your call! Should I water the juice down? No. Most of it is water! I'm worried about not being to tolerate vegetable juice. Might it cause an upset stomach? The main vegetables I recommend should cause you no problems. But be careful with others. Dark green veggies should be introduced carefully. Others, such as onions, which are irritants, and leeks, can make a glass of juice completely undrinkable even by adding just a small amount. You will discover these things as you go along. It is possible to make yourself feel quite sick by drinking too much of the wrong vegetable (i have done this a couple of times!) so go carefully with those experiments. Should I add anything to the juice? Some vitamins are better-absorbed alongside fats. For that reason you may wish to add a spoonful of olive oil. Recently I have taken to adding flax seed, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds for the fats. But it is rather unpalatable. Olive oil is probably a better idea. You may also wish to add other things like protein powder, etc. Sometimes I add pea-protein. Some leafy vegetables won't juice. What should I do? Make your juice, transfer it to a blender, add the difficult vegetable and give it a whizz. You'll have a vegetable smoothie. Can I make fruit smoothies instead of juicing? Smoothies use the whole of the fruit, blended into a drink. So it's just as physically difficult to drink a smoothie made with ten apples as it is to eat ten apples! The point of juicing is to ingest more vegetable nutrients than possible through eating. To do that you need to remove the fibre. People are often drawn to fruit smoothies because they find the taste more palatable than vegetable juice, but aside from the aforementioned reason, there is no evidence to support fruit juice benefiting acne. That's not to say that fruit isn't healthy to eat; it's just not part of this program. DIET What about pizza/alcohol/gluten/pasta/bread etc? All the salient points are listed in the regime above. Whether you want to drink beer or eat pizza is up to you. Generally I think living a monastic existence when it comes to food and drink is neither desirable nor practical. So you're not some health nut, then? You only have to look around you to see couch potatoes with clear skin and athletes with acne. Living a healthy lifestyle is certainly desirable, and one we should all strive for, but I don't actually think it's of specific value when trying to clear your skin. So don't think you have to get up at 5am and go jogging to help your acne. And this isn't a low GI diet? No. I have never consciously tried to adopt a low GI diet since it seems too restrictive and difficult to follow to me. That's not to say that I don't endorse the principles of it. You may wish to tweak my approach if you wish to follow a low GI approach. You've mentioned sweet potatoes a lot in your posts. What exactly are the benefits? They are amongst the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. They always appear near the top of the lists of skin-care vegetables. They are higher in beta-carotene than carrots. They are rich in anti-cancer chemicals. They have proven immune system boosting properties. They are highly anti-inflammatory. And they taste delicious. Do you drink coffee? I don't drink coffee. It's not a conscious decision; I just can't stand the taste without sugar. Starbucks will just have to eke out a profit without me. What about tea? I'm British! The county would collapse without tea! I'm the same. Although recently I have switched almost exclusively to green tea. And what about milk? There's some evidence that milk may be a trigger. I don't drink milk. Again, this isn't a conscious decision, it's just that since stopping sugar, I don't drink coffee. Also, I don't really like breakfast cereal. So I just never drink it. But it was never consciously part of my regime. Perhaps it should be. But diet doesn't cause acne! My friend eats all the junk food he/she wants and he/she has perfect skin. Some people (me included) can eat all the junk food they want and they never put on any weight. I'm the same waist size at 44 that I was at 21. Does that mean junk food can't make people fat? What foods do you emphasis in your diet? Green leafy vegetables. Berries -blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries. I probably spend £5 (US $8) on berries daily. Salmon. Turkey And what about 'bad' food that you shouldn't eat? I love curry. If I could I would eat curry every day. As it is, I have it two or three times a month. I also love pizza. But in my opinion, it's probably the most unhealthy food on the planet. So I never order a commercial one. Occasionally I buy one in a supermarket. SUGAR REDUCTION Mmm, sugary things! There's no way I could get through the day without M&Ms, a can of Coke, and my aunt Alice's delicious lemon cake. It's going to be impossible to quit those. You only think it's impossible because you are attaching a positive utility to eating them. If you reprogram your mind to associate sugary food and drinks with negative utility (oily, spotty skin, excess fat, diabeties) then you will naturally want to avoid them. It takes time to reprogram your mind but it can be done. I did the same with cigarettes. Once I changed how I thought about them I never wanted to go near them again. And 14 years later, I haven't. We each have our own 'weakness'. But the human brain is extremely powerful if you know how to leverage it correctly. Can you elaborate on that? Most of the time our brains work in our favour. If you put your hand into a flame, your brain sends a message to instantly retract your hand to avoid serious damage to the organism. If you walk into a smoke filled room, your lungs crave fresh air and you try to get out of there as soon as possible. You don't have to think about these things -it's instinctive. The body will always try to get us out of pain and into pleasure as quickly as possible. It is a survival mechanism. Unfortunately, with cravings also, you are in pain, and your mind will try to get you out of pain (the craving) and into pleasure (the craving has gone) also. It is instinctive too, and works on a very powerful subconscious level. That is the simple reason why WILLPOWER ALONE WILL ALWAYS FAIL. It's why people who try to stop smoking fail again and again because the pain (nicotine withdrawal) is too strong for willpower alone to overcome. The way to change behaviour is to reverse the pain/pleasure process and get it to work in your favour. If you mentally associate sugar with pain (blackheads, lesions, cysts, oily skin), then your mind will start to work in your favour by trying to get you away from the pain of horrible skin and into the pleasure of not eating sugar and having clear skin. It is then easy to stop. Really. Willpower is not required, since it doesn't take any willpower to get away from something bad. It happens automatically. Now. To get to this stage is simple, but not easy. You have to reinforce your new way of thinking about sugar until it becomes subconscious and automatic. This means repeating the bad effects of sugar to yourself several times a day. Sounds silly? It works. I advise writing out all the bad things about sugar consumption and keeping it with you and reading through it several times a day. Don't just write down 'spots' -write down the emotions connected to them. Embarrassment, isolation, self-loathing. Really FEEL the pain of those negative emotions. This is the most powerful way to start mental reprogramming since you are experiencing the pain on an emotional level. Tempted to eat sugar? Then run through the list again. You wont want sugar after reading it. It's a chore at first but it yields massive benefits if you manage to see it through. After a while, your mind automatically associates sugar with pain and eventually it never crosses your mind to eat it again. This saves you the futility of fighting cravings all your life. These are well-known principles of changing addictive behaviour and they really work. I have applied them to several areas of my life and they have yielded incredible results -results that I could never have got through willpower alone- and I advise everyone struggling to change their behaviour to try them. Sounds like too much effort? I understand. But you're trying to change your life here. It's not an easy thing to do. Massive effort = massive results. SUPPLEMENTS That low level of B5 supplementation can't possibly work -you have to take at least 5g/10g etc. It does work. There is a wealth of anecdotal evidence to support the benefits of low supplementation. I'm concerned about the possible side effects of B5 It's sensible to be concerned. See the section on B5 above. I can't find B5, can I take Pantothenic Acid instead? They are the same thing. I already take other supplements. Can I continue to take them whilst using your regime? In recent years I've come to believe that supplements are generally not beneficial and may well be harmful. I would advise anyone to take only the barest minimum level of supplements necessary. You may be able to take even less than the B5 and Carnitine doses I describe. Can't I just take lots of vitamin pills to save me the hassle of juicing? I have to say that it concerns me greatly to read (albeit well-intentioned) posts from young people treating their acne by megadosing vitamins. If you research the clinically documented cases of vitamin toxicity caused by megadosing you will be shocked. Don't be fooled by the fact that vitamin pills are legal products, available without prescription. Cigarettes and alcohol are legal products. Does that mean they're safe? Cigarettes aren't safe at all, and with alcohol it's left up to the user to moderate his or her consumption. Society does not employ legality of a product to ensure safety; it's left up to the user to do that. The problem is that desperate people do not moderate their usage; they take very high doses. The manufacturers know this -that is why these pills are packaged in high doses. It is a response to demand, not a statement of safe dosage. Furthermore, don't be fooled by the fact that because these substances occur in nature they are therefore 'natural' and must therefore be good for you. Many things in the world are 'natural' -it doesn't make them desirable. There are all sorts of poisonous plants, insects, fish, etc on the planet. No-one would eat Deadly Nightshade. Or the seeds of the Laburnum tree. So forget the myth of 'natural' = good. And remember that these pills are drugs. They are mass-produced in factories using artificial processes to synthesize chemicals into pill form, often at concentrations hundreds of times stronger than the richest food source. Just because it doesn't require a man in a white coat to prescribe them does not mean that they don't share the essential qualities of a drug. If you're not convinced of this, remember that the origin of drugs is in the natural world. No-one would deny that opium is drug, and yet it comes from poppies. Heroine is derived from opium. Cocaine is derived from the coca plant. And I'm not just referring to illegal drugs. Many prescription-only drugs are part-synthesized from the natural world. I know the harmful effects of megadosing first hand, having given myself vitamin D toxicity in my 30s. This was taking 'just' 5000 IU a day. Over a period five months it built up in my system and made me very sick. (Note: there is a difference between the way Vitamin D is synthesized through UV exposure and that gained through dietary sources, this is why UV synthesized Vitamin D will not lead to problems). My doctor had no idea what was wrong with me. I was in hospital for five days. Did it cause any long term damage? Who knows. I don't want anyone else to put themselves through that. People have said to me, "Look, here's a website showing Vitamin X is absolutely non-toxic" or "Dr Z states categorically that Vitamin X has never caused any adverse symptoms." Well, fine. But for each one of those, I can show you someone else with a contrary opinion, with different research. The very fact that it's a matter of debate proves that the health risks are unknown. And megadosing is relatively new. It's not until a generation has passed, that we will know the full story. And let me tell you that being able to point to a specific website saying that Vitamin D is perfectly safe is of no benefit if it's you that's sick. I would strongly advise anyone considering taking megadose vitamins to do some research and think again. Juicing the amounts I recommend doesn't begin to approach megadose level. Wow. You sound quite opinionated on that. I have no particular axe to grind with the vitamin industry. Vitamins are helpful for many people. I'm simply keen to dissuade others from making the mistakes I made. TOPICALS Do you think a good skincare regime is still important? Yes. Unfortunately most people make this the focus of their treatment, when it really should be a secondary treatment. So what topicals do you you use, then? If you ask a hundred people to recommend a skincare product to you, you will get a list of a hundred products! It is futile to ask for recommendations because everyone differs in product tolerance, pH skin values, and oiliness. For that reason, what you should be looking for is the overall reputation of the manufacturer, not any individual product. Companies that make effective acne skin care products tend to also make a range of acclaimed skin-care products for all skin types.This is no coincidence. I use a cleanser of clinical grade and a non-oil based rehydrating gel. They are relatively expensive but they are superior to anything you can buy on the high street. That's not to say that these particular products will work for you; but rather that the manufactuer's product range will almost certainly contain a product that will. I'm not going to mention the brand here because this thread is about holistic treatment, not topicals, and I don't want to be misinterpreted as promoting anyone's products. But if you'd like to message me, I will gladly tell you which ones I use. What about Benzoyl Peroxide? I stopped using BP prior to starting this treatment. If my program works for you, then you won't need BP either. MANAGING THE TREATMENT I've started your treatment and I'm still getting zits. What's going wrong? Nothing is going wrong. Review the timeline that I mention above. Remember, you are attempting to heal a systemic problem in the body. It takes time. Don't get obsessed over the day-to-day fluctuations in your skin. Much as people like to look for cause-and-effect situations in acne ("I ate a fresh cream cake on Monday, and on Wednesday I've got a big cyst on my chin") I believe that this is merely pattern-fitting out of random data. The only meaningful measure is the bigger picture over the longer timescale. What's the key to success with your program? Setting up a routine and seeing it through. I'm going away for a while. How can I follow this regime whilst on vacation? If you're going away, then enjoy the break! Don't spend time worrying about your face. Short breaks from the regime won't make any lasting difference. But that doesn't mean it's acceptable to gorge on chocolate. Stick with the main points as best you can. If you want to continue to take vegetable juice whilst away, then I suggest tracking down a local juice bar, if possible. Here in London, there are several specialist juice outlets dotted around, and the better cafes will also do you a nice fresh blend. I daresay it's the same in all major cities. Failing that, emphasise vegetables, where possible, in your diet. Personally, I would rather take no vegetable juice at all than drink V8. As I've said above, I think V8 is of very limited, if any, benefit. I'm some weeks into your program and I haven't seen any benefit, I feel like quitting. I know how tempting it is to quit after a couple of weeks and move on to another treatment. It is inherently challenging to continue with programs that appear to be producing poor results. But often the one thing we haven't tried with skin programs is time. I guarantee that there are people who will have read my regime, tried it for a few days, seen a couple of new lesions pop up, then quit, concluding it doesn't work, off to another thread to try that for a few days, and so on. How do I know that? Because I used to be that person! If you can manage it, try to formally assess the condition of your skin just once a week, say every Sunday night, for twelve weeks. Use objective measures such as how many active lesions, how many are healing, how oily your skin is, etc. Perhaps put this down on a spreadsheet. This will help you see the broader trend over time and keep you on track to the 12 week goal. Only at that point, can you make an informed decision about whether to continue. I've reached the three month period, I've followed your regime to the letter, and I can't see any benefit whatsoever -now what? (so far, this question has been asked just twice) Please don't despair. My regime may require tweaking or reworking to find what works for you. That may be just around the corner. What is important is not to respond emotionally and throw in the towel but to take a step back and consider logically and carefully what additional elements you might add, and to give those time to work. Juicing provides a firm foundation on which to base further treatment plans. Remember Thomas Edison, who took 5000 experiments to perfect the light bulb. Or James Dyson, who needed 1000 prototypes to invent his bagless vacuum cleaner. You need to adopt a similar, calm, scientific approach. I know that's easy to say, but it's ultimately the key to clearing your skin. A couple of areas you may wish to investigate are L Cysteine and probiotics. I've been reading around about Cysteine and some users have reported success with that combined with B5 instead of carnitine. The area of probiotics also looks interesting. My advice is to get a list of your top-4 programs to try, and start at the top and work downwards giving each one program three months. Over the course of a year you will have investigated all of high-probability holistic remedies. A structured and targeted approach has a much greater chance of success. And keep up the juice. PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS I'm age XX and I feel really depressed and angry that I'm still suffering with this awful skin all these years later, especially when I think about the effect it's had on my life. Why me? Everyone reading this knows how you feel. Someone once said to me, "You're so ugly I can hardly bear to look at you". There is no denying that moments like that shape you. You wouldn't be human if they didn't. I can't change anyone's past. But I can hopefully point you in the direction of a better future. What about stress/masturbation/depression/psychological factors? Don't get sidetracked from the fact that acne is a physical ailment like a broken leg. Stress doesn't help anyone but it's not causing your acne and thinking about it won't help any. My treatment plan may require tweaking for you to get results. Some people have found that combining my regime with probiotics or cysteine, was the way forward for them. It's not set in stone. The idea is that this thread evolves for people to develop their own individual treatment plans, and share their knowledge with others. It's about empowerment, and not being a passive sufferer in the dermatologist's waiting room! Any final message to anyone considering your program? Beating acne is not straightforward. If it was, sites like this wouldn't exist. Succeeding means making it your mission in life, for a short while, to clear your skin. Make no mistake, you will need to summon more resilience and perseverance than the average person. But it can be done. And the benefits of succeeding are so significant that it's worth putting everything you can into it. For that reason it is important to prepare psychologically. Don't choose to start the regime just before Christmas, for example, when you will be surrounded with sugary foods. Make sure you are able to get to the supermarket sufficiently often to buy enough vegetables. Think about what time of day you will be juicing. Maybe buy a new knife or chopping board specifically for the task. Consider keeping the regime a secret from family and friends, to see whether you get any unsolicited comments on your skin further down the line.     This was posted in the adult acne forum but I decided to make a thread here because i think it needs more attention and we need more people to try this. Anyways I've been taking Niacin for about a week and its giving me very good results. It's tightening my pores, i get less oil, and i just dont break out anymore. I've literally only had 2 pimples this whole week and they were so small that they disappeared once i popped them. When you take Niacin you get this thing called the niacin "flush" which is your body giving you a signal that you are detoxing. Basically what Niacin does is widen the capillaries around your entire body and including your skin. Wider capillaries = more blood flow to the skin = healthy skin Niacin also plays a role in liver function and aids the liver in metabolizing toxins. You want the flush because it means that your widening your capillaries. Niacinimide will not widen your capillaries and you probably wont get results. Also don't buy the time released ones either. I just went to my local grocery store and bought 500mg tablets of Niacin for 5 dollars, its really cheap. When you start your gonna wanna take 100mg for 3 days, then 200-300mg for another 3 days, and then try taking 400-500mg. When you get to the higher doses you'll definitely experience the flush. If you're wondering what the flush feels like, it feels like nice hot sunburn all over your body with a little bit of tingly itchiness. Usually i can feel blood rushing to my head and it may get pretty intense. You just gotta do something (i play guitar) to keep your mind off of things for 30-60 minutes. I definitely think more people should be trying Niacin because its a very cheap supplement with good results and it doesn't require a strict diet at all. Right now I'm also taking 50mg of zinc and fish oil but I've been doing that for months and I haven't had good results since taking niacin.
  14. hey guys, i know a lot of people tend to go for the green powders and supplements rather than fresh produce because it IS a lot easier and definitely saves time... BUT i just want to say that i have tried so many of those green powders (i used to work in the whole body department at whole foods so i got to try EVERYTHING for free), and i can honestly say that they do NOTHING compared to the real deal. i've been juicing veggies and eating a SUPER CLEAN diet for about a week and i feel such a dramatic difference... i was taking those supplements (miracle greens, berry green, you name it, i've tried it) for MONTHS at whole foods and the only thing i can HONESTLY say i gained from it was an upset stomach. i just bought a juicer for $150 at bed bath & beyond (the breville juice fountain plus)... not the cheapest but not TOO expensive, and such an amazing investment. really, if you think you can find the time and the motivation, i urge you to try fresh vegetable juices and a diet high in raw fruits and veggies... i feel like a different person and it's only been a week. (incidentally, i ate raw foods for about 5 months a few years ago and felt amazing the whole time, so i can tell you with confidence that the good feeling does NOT wear off, it only gets better!) please give the fresh stuff a chance, there is really NO substitute for real organic produce.
