  1. I am sixteen years old and just started accutane last week (claravis brand isotretinoin). I'm fully aware that eating disorders should be addressed before treatment via isotretinoin begins, however i have an undiagnosed case of anorexia, and for personal family reasons it is not an option for me to coome clean with my doctors about this at the moment, though i do plan to as soon as it's safe I'm wondering if anyone knows what sort of information is given to those who take accutane while suffering from anorexia. I'm eating every time i take the medication, as directed, but i have one pill in the morning and another at night and i get horribly sick every time i eat twice a day because my body isnt equipped to deal with that much food at once. how much do i have to eat with my meds? i know fat aids the absorption of the medication and i should be eating a full meal with it or it may impact effectiveness or make me feel ill. would taking it with a glass of full-fat milk be sufficient? disclaimer: im not asking for anyone to give me any sort of input on my disorder, how i should get over it, how i need to talk to my doctor, etc. i just want advice on how to work at a healthy pace toward my self-directed recovery without compromising my acne treatment
  2. Two months ago: today: So this girly needs some advice from women who have or are suffering from hormonal acne and have used birth control to control their acne breakouts. Background: I have suffered from anorexia for the last 6 years (since I was 16) and due to this I have never properly had my periods, only the occasional one every now and again. However since maintaining my weight, still low but healthy enough (BMI 15, if that is any help to anyone), I have had a massive hormonal breakout. I am guessing it was hormonal as I broke out a month ago at the same time as I was experiencing blood spotting and my boobs had swelled that week. I went to the doctors and he prescribed me Yasmin as I have been having weak periods every now and again since September last year and he thought this would regulate my periods and help my acne settle down. Now when I say I had a breakout I don't mean 3 or 4 spots on my chin, I am currently sitting here with around 20 spots on my face! I have never had a breakout before only the occasional pimple. I am unsure whether to go on the pill I am worried that it will cause my acne to get worse as it has been slowly getting worse and worse since the breakout in early march. I'm already vegetarian but over the month I have cut down on dairy, I'm drinking more water, taking vitamins, drinking green tea, eating more vegetables, I've been using a topical cream named Zineryt (for the last week) and all has led to no results so far! I'm feeling lost on what to do and I already suffer from body dysmorphia, all I now see when I look in the mirror is a girl covered in spots and I need to find a way out of this mess. I'm extremely distressed, cancelling on friends, hiding away, finding myself skipping university lectures etc. Also, it is making my anorexia hard to deal with again as it keeps telling me to just lose weight so my body won't be able to have the energy to produce the hormones. I DON'T WANT TO RISK EVERYTHING I'VE WORKED SO HARD FOR IN RECOVERY, I know I'd be put back in rehab. So any advice would be very much appreciated! Should I start on birth control? Would that be advisable? What were your experiences? I mean the doctor thinks so but he only chatted with me for five minutes so he doesn't fully understand my situation at all.
  3. I've posted about other conditions that may have contributed to my acne before, and with all of them, I have stated my different theories as to why I may have developed acne after having completely clear skin. After my gynecologist's suggestion of pelvic floor therapy, though, I came across this article: Though it was only for a few months, I struggled with eating disorder type behavior: starving, overexercising, occasional use of laxatives. I found this article interesting because, along with my acne, I've undergone a few other physical changes. I'm no longer able to have any sex due to extraordinary pain and tightness, and I've had very bad constipation to the point that I constantly have to strain when going to the bathroom. I've tried every kind of treatment for constipation, magnesium supplement, complete diet change, gluten-free, fiber increase, probiotics, etc. And then, I noticed something... It's not so much that I feel backed up, but moreso that I physically have trouble with bowel movements. The muscles seem to be very tight and have trouble relaxing to allow me to do so properly. Continuing my google journey, I found another article about how a woman had gone to physical therapy in order to fix her "broken vagina", and... "Apparently, while my recently increased core-heavy regimen of pilates and barre had not given me late '90s Janet Jackson abs, the doctors hypothesized that it had caused the muscles in my pelvic wall to tighten." This was VERY interesting to me, because when I was struggling with eating disorder type behavior, everyday I would incorporate a 15-30 minute intense ab workout. This seems like such a coincidence to me. That is when things began to go downhill with my skin and stomach. I've also developed an ovarian cyst, which is why I went on an expedition to get my hormones tested, but... if my constipation has created estrogen dominance, couldn't that hormonal imbalance have created the cyst? I know this theory is a bit dicey, but it's all I have right now. My life has been turned upside down because of the physical and mental complications of this entire health issue. It's felt like a never-ending nightmare. My acne is pretty mild right now, having just ended my period (the only time it really starts clearing up), but I just got two small pimples on my left cheek. I'm preparing for the dreaded monthly ovulation time, where every red mark on my face seems to flare up relentlessly. I'll continue posting about this theory, though, and I'm hoping to undergo the Pelvic Physical therapy, which may give me a chance at permanently beating my constipation and maybe clearing my skin up for good.
  4. Hi. Ok so my acne right now is the worst its been since high school! Im desperately needing help! Im 31 and suffer from hormonal acne. December was an extremely stressful time for me. (A death in family and another traumatic event happened). My face, around my mouth, just exploded with acne! Some of the acne went away, but the hyperpigmentation is really bad! Cysts, pustules and whiteheads. Id been using Cetaphil Oily Skin face wash as my skin is quite oily. With Benzac Ac 5% gel. Followed by Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturizer SPF 30 Sunscreen. At night was the same, but with standard Cetaphil moisturiser. It was all working semi-ok. I havent had clear skin since I was 14, but this routine gave me only 2-3 breakouts at a time. Now, as you can see in the photos, Its a hell of alot more! I am currently on Zinc tablets and Doxycycline 100mg. I have been for a decent 10 years and I dont think its doing much but my fear to stop is huge. My dr who is wonderful says it is helping. I also probably need to add that I do have an eating disorder (anorexia) so I know my diet isnt great. Its too low but im doing quite well with water. Having atleast 2L a day. So. I got desperate. It was worsening my depression so I came online to think what to do and I read about the Caveman Regimen. I decided since Im not working and never wear make up anyway I thought it actually made sense. It sounded crazy and scary as hell but it still made sense. Im now on day 2 of Caveman Regimen and its not as scary as day 1. I thought my face would be dripping with oil but its not. I have made my own version of Caveman Regimen though. I couldnt not wash 100%. So my morning shower i let water fall over my face but only for a few seconds. I lightly rub with hands. Once out, i very very gently pat with a soft face cloth. Then let it to dry properly itself. Once dry I do use Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturizer SPF 30 because i can not not wear a sunscreen. At night just before bed I splash luke warm water over it and very lightly pat dry maybe once or twice. Thats it. Im not getting the flaking so much and my acne is the same. I was expecting it to be worse but im feeling positive about this. Im definitely going to keep trying it coz I have nothing to lose any more. My depression couldnt have gotten worse. My other issue is hyperpigmentation which is also why I need the sunscreen. Any help, or any advice, or ANYTHING, feedback would be so helpful.
  5. Acne and anorexia

Does anyone know of a link between acne and anorexia? I've always had acne, but my skin got REALLY bad when I developed an eating disorder in 2012. About a year earlier, I had lost my period. Now, I'm 8 months into recovery (yes!!!), have a regular cycle, and my hair is becoming a little thicker, but my skin is still awful. I've spent thousands of dollars on derm visits and every acne treatment available, but NOTHING has worked. So I'm desperate to understand the link between acne and my eating disorder (if there is one).
  6. Hey everyone, my name is Nola. I'm quite lost and I need help deciding what I should do about this acne. It seems hard to ever get a response on here anymore, so I'd greatly appreciate any help. I've recently got my hormone saliva test back and I need help deciphering it. but first, my background: 23 yr old female, I've been taking spironolactone 100mg for 2 years now..It got me completely clear in 4 months. I've recently started breaking out again (although not nearly as bad as my pre-spiro days) but it's been getting increasingly worse. The reason why I think spiro stopped working as well as it used to, is because I had a relapse from an eating disorder a few months ago. It seriously messed up my period, and subsequently, my skin. I have recovered since then and I'm eating well, lots of organic fruits and veggies, lean meats, good carbs, low sugar, no dairy, etc. I have symptoms of estrogen dominance.. PMS, cramps, mood swings, depression, tons of hair loss, acne, extra weight around hips/thighs and I break out during the middle of my cycle (ovulation?) and my skin magically clears up during my period and for about a week afterwards. weird, huh? Has anyone had this happen to them? I also have some symptoms of high testosterone, hair loss and some really long ass peach fuzz on my face. now for my saliva hormone test results: My results Ranges Estradiol (Saliva ) 3.6 H pg/m 1.3-3.3 Premenopausal ( Luteal ) Progesterone (Saliva ) 68 L pg/m L Optimal:75-270 Premenopausal ( Luteal ) Ratio: Pg/ E2 (Saliva ) 19 L Optimal: 100-500 when E2 1.3-3.3 pg/m L Testosterone (Saliva ) 46 pg/m Optimal: 16-55 ( Age Dependent ) DHEAS (Saliva ) 7.7 ng/m L 2-23 ( Age Dependent ) Cortisol (Saliva ) 6.9 ng/m L 3.7-9.5 (morning ) The H is for High, L for Low. So… EXTREMELY low progesterone to estrogen ratio? I'm not even sure I'm looking at this right??/ By reading this information, what do you guys suggest that I do? Should I add in DIM, vitex, progesterone cream, inositol, more spiro? blahhHH!!! I recently began taking some inostiol powder but a few days afterwards, I broke out out in cysts, which I typically never have. So discouraging. Also, I've attached a picture of my face as it is right now, in all it's oily glory. I currently only have 4 active spots, the rest of the redness that you see are scars from previous monthly breakouts.
