  1. Hello! I started getting acne when I was around 10 years old. It got pretty severe and then began to clear up when I turned 17. Now at age 25 I have clear skin but am plagued with acne scars. I have been going to a dermatologist for a year now. I receive chemical peels and microdermabrasion every two weeks (alternating). The derm insists that I will see results if I stick with it long enough. My skin looks a lot better as far as my pore size and coloring, but the texture is still awful. The derm says my next step is micro needling. Last month I went to a plastic surgeon for a consultation. I asked about subcision and filler but the assistant I saw (I didn't actually get to meet with the plastic surgeon) said that I would have better results with Fraxel on top of TCA. She also insisted that first I get on the Obagi system. The plastic surgeon works with Obagi in Los Angeles. She said with Obagi my skin will be in a better place to receive the best results from the Fraxel plus TCA. I was quoted $500 for the Obagi system and $4,200 for the Fraxel with TCA. She didn't even look closely at my skin or change the lighting around. My skin looks fine in some lighting, but in harsh lighting, it looks horrible. I am tempted to go with the recommendations of the plastic surgeon's office, but at that high a price I want to hear some other opinions. Thanks in advance.
  2. UPDATE: I will not continue with TCA cross or any type of peels. I feel like the improvement was minimal and some actually got worse. The very very long healing time only adds to my stress and i have accepted living with my icepicks.
  3. I have mild acne with mostly blackheads and Whiteheads. Old blackheads have left these scars on cheek and another I have from a scratch. Are these ice pick marks? They’re not very deep but still noticeable. Does anyone know of treatments that could help. I only want to fix these scars on my cheek and wouldn’t want to mess with the rest of my face thank you. Up close you can see em real good lol so I would like to smooth out my face, thanks!
  4. The last couple of days I have come to the conclusion that I will be Forever Alone forever. I'm too late in the dating game and will never marry and barely have a social life all thanks to acne and some other personal issues I had when I was younger. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to accept this and be content while seeing happy clear skinned people everywhere. Some of us are just cursed.
  5. What kind of scars are these?

    Forums Scar treatments 1 reply

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some help categorizing the type of scars (rolling, ice pick, boxcar?) I have. Also, if you have any suggestions for treatments for these particular scars, please let me know. I’ve had these for at least 8 years and I feel like they’re getting worse as I age. Thank you in advance hopefully!
  6. So I've been dealing with this issue for as long as I can remember honestly. Before I begin, the photos I'm going to post are pretty hard to look at. At least in my opinion. So be warned. It's also not the shortest read, but I do believe that there are elements of this story that can help many people on here who struggle with skin issues. In fact, it's more likely that it will than not. Very, very, very long story short(er..ish)-- In high school I had regular hormonal acne. It was just a little acne. Something millions of people go through. I also had low self-esteem as a teenager, again a phenomenon not particularly unique to me. This wonderful combo really did me in, as I decided to attack my face with any cleanser, cream, and ointment I could get my sad little hands on, and my skin became increasingly more irritated. Looking back, I would literally give up everything I currently own to have that problem again, but I digress... I talked about it with my mom-- who's a pediatrician-- and she gave me a steroid/antibacterial cream that she used in her adolescent years. I do love her trying to help, but this was horrible, horrible advice. It worked for a while, as steroids do a great job at stopping inflammation. However, it does an even better job of completely destroying your skin if used for more than a short period of time, something I wasn't aware of. After some time, I started developing massive zits, and my face was truly a sight for sore eyes... if one wanted said eyes to become flaming balls of fire. To cut this a little short (because I'm nowhere near the end)-- went to a dermatologist, prescribed Tazorac, worked!!... for a while.... then my skin became ridiculously oily (not great, but can handle it)... then itchy (wait what)... then dry, oily, AND itchy (oh no...). I realized the Tazorac dehydrated my skin and destroyed my skin barrier, making it prone to rashes, pimples, pustules, and excessive sebum production to compensate for the dehydrated state. My curse came back. What makes my case particularly, um, interesting, is that no matter what I used, it made my skin worse. I tried gentle cleansers and lotions and creams and oils for dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, dry/oily/slightly reptilian skin; whatever product type the crooks at these big pharma companies pushed out to the market, I tried. All they did was make my skin burn, itch, and harder to look at. Afterward, I tried the caveman method for full year, a method I heard from this website. It helped a bit with the acne actually, but it made my skin so incredibly dry, I couldn't smile without feeling the collagen crunch in my cheeks. After a year+, I decided to adopt a water only method. Another bad move. My face felt like crunchy dead grass at this point. I slowly came to the realization that this might just be something I'd have to live with. I developed HUGE nose pimples which caused hypertrophic scarring (I currently have another monster on my nose as I write this). My cheeks & forehead are covered in discolored patches of dry, itchy skin. So yea... life really sucks right now. Pics; Again, pretty nasty... So there's the issue. Believe it or not, it's a lot better than what it used to be (imagine that). And the thing about skin issues is that its it's all relative-- what seems as a plague for one person could be seen as a non-issue for someone else. But at this moment, I am 22, in my parent’s basement on a Saturday, while my close friends are at a bar talking about their successful jobs and future goals. So if anybody can offer some sort of opinion on methods—lifestyle changes, diagnoses, or even routines—they wouldn’t mind sharing, I would be sooo grateful. As of now, I'm thinking that it might actually be seb derm, but I'm still unsure. I'm looking into treatment options with low risk, but I also have little to lose at this point. This problem has already taken away sooo much time, money, and experiences away. The prospects of a happier future is what keeps me hopeful. Thanks for reading. I do believe in the notion of giving before receiving, so here are some of the lessons I've learned about acne, medications, and methods that can really help others out there struggling: BY FAR MY BIGGEST POINT: If you have mild/mild-moderate acne, CALM DOWN!!!! I'd be a hypocrite to say this is an easy task, because I know better than most the anxiety, social discomfort, and self-deprecation acne can impose on an individual. But please believe me when I say that to 96% of people, it is NOT NOTICEABLE. I promise. This isn't my opinion, this is a FACT. The reason why is that almost EVERYONE has struggled with acne to some degree, so if you have a little more, DO NOT PANIC. You are in the majority. What makes acne a problem is when you try to aggressively treat it!! These pharma companies would love nothing more than to trap you in a spiral of dependence on their products. So, while some super-duper magical potion claims to cure your acne, it also can damage your skin so that it becomes more PRONE to acne. So please... just chilllllll. Stay hygienic, stay healthy, and stay happy. Your body will heal itself. Just stick to a very basic routine of gentle cleansing, moisturizing and sleeping. If you’re face is burning, peeling, dry, etc., listen to those signs—they are happening for a reason. If you have acne leaning to the more severe side- firstly, welcome to the club. Secondly, acne methods may be helpful, but I think what may be worth looking into is NATURAL METHODS. Products such as raw honey and apple cider vinegar has helped me tremendously. I’m still FARRRRR from perfect, but I am a big endorser of both products. Also, if you have dry skin that seems incurable, it may actually be SEB DERM. Seb derm on the face can lead to acne because of what it does to the skin barrier, so while you may be treating acne, you could be making seb derm worse, which makes acne worse, and seb derm worse…. You get my point. So finding methods to treat seb derm symptoms could possibly treat both! Buzzwords: sulfur, demodex, ketoconazole. I'm suspecting it might be my problem actually.... STAY AWAY FROM STEROIDS PLEASE See 3 Mental Health: I read a post on Quora that talked about the "Lottery of Life", how some the problems we face are not because we necessarily caused by anybody or anything, just simply the hand we were given. Given that we all even have the ability to interact on this website shows that we are certainty in the 15-25% of people who won this lottery. So take advantage! Don't let acne stop you from doing anything and everything you want to or hope to. If you don't have one already, find a solid, loyal group of friends, explore new interests, and live your best life! Wishing you all health and happiness!

So ive been struggling with acne for the last 10 years. Ive tried everything to clear my skin but nothing has worked. I used to break out on my forehead and upper cheeks but now its just cystic acne near my jawline and lower cheeks. Its hideous. Theyre little cysts and every time they form, they scar. I have such bad scarring now (hyperpigmentation, ice pick, and box car) and still breaking out that my self esteem is at an all time low. i was a vegetarian and ate very poorly for a long time, pretty much until this summer so i think that had to be a factor for a while but now i dont know for sure. I tried Accutane last summer for 6 months on the lowest dose without birth control. It definitely helped and saw an improvementwith the acne. About 6 months later, i got a boyfriend and became sexually active. I got on birth control and decided to go with Ortho Tri Cyclen which wasnt too bad with the acne but made me crazy depressed. I then switched to a mini pill for 3 months which just worsened my acne and finally landed on Loryna (Yaz generic). I had my worst breakout ever during the 2nd month and it has slowly gotten better but im still breaking out. Also, this acne has now made me start scarring and it just looks awful. Im so ashamed and depressed that i hate leaving my house. I have been doing laser genesis and will try pico genesis laser on my next visit. Currently, i just finished my 5th month of Loryna and i am looking for some input as what to do. I am on Spironolactone but i dont think it has helped much. I will admit ive been lazy with the timing i take my Birth control at. Some days its 2 hours later. I started taking Lysine, B complex vitamins, probiotics, fish oil and vitamin A all last week. I have also tried making my diet more low glycemic and drinking more water. Should i stay on Loryna and go back on accutane? I dont really want to go on Accutane again because i cant do scar treatments for a yesr after but if i can get the acne under control, i can deal with the scars after. Or Should I increase my Spironolactone? Should I get off Loryna all in general? Do i just need more time for the vitamins/diet to kick in? Is there something else I should be doing?

Hello! I have quite a few scars and would like some help on how to deal with them! I have 2 saucer-shaped scars, 2 shallow but still noticeable rolling scars, and a few icepick scars. One of my ice pick scars creates a big dimple in my skin and is inside of a rolling scar. Would TCA peels be able to help me over a long time? Or do I need different intervention for best improvement? thank you! I have outlined the rolling scars in green, and posted 4 photos! The scars aren't too deep and are mostly more noticeable when shadowed! When I pull my skin taut, they almost completely flatten.
  9. Will this be a crater/indented scar?

    Forums Scar treatments 1 reply

A week ago I got a really bad blemish and obviously I made the mistake of messing with it. Today I noticed the spot where the blemish was is indented. The mark is still new so I am not sure if it's still healing or if this will be a permanent acne scar, only time will tell but I'm curious to know what you guys think. Again it's only been a day since this has been indented and a week since the mark first showed up. I'll attach a picture so you can see and let me know what you think. This is the first time anything like this has happened so I'm unsure. Thanks
  10. Scars After massive cyst

    Forums Scar treatments 6 replies

Hello! I recently recovered from a huge cyst about the length and diameter of a golf ball (check out my previous post if you would like!) It was incredibly inflamed and painful, and leaked pus almost daily. I am relieved to be free of it, but it wasn't without a cost. It left the area indented, with further, deeper indentations across it. The entire area is slightly pink, with darker purple spots on the deeper indents. It is also riddled with ice pick scars (I've counted 13.) it is all in a very contained area, which makes my cheek look rough and dirty. What can I do at this point? The cyst and inflammation went away about two months ago! Pics here: http://imgur.com/a/Jbsue
  11. I can't figure out from the pictures in the sticky thread whether my scars are ice pick or box car scars or rolling scars. I can't tell the difference between them. Also, I tried reading the stickied thread's links to other threads about microneedling, dermarolling, and peeling, but they were too advanced for me. What is microneedling, dermarolling, and peeling? How do they work and how are they different? How do I/what are the techniques to get rid of acne scars/stretch marks? How does needling/rolling/peeling get of acne scars/stretch marks? Does needling/rolling/peeling make you bleed, and is it dangerous? Would needling/rolling/peeling help me get rid of these scars? Should I use a combination? How frequently should I needle/roll/peel? How long does it take to get results? Will makeup help hide them? What kind of scars do I have? Are they shallow or deep? The ones on the side of my face have healed significantly. They used to be bright red. Thank you.
  12. Hello, As you can see, my problem area is mid face, cheeks only. I tried dermapen, the doc told me I wouldn't have complications, I did. I had hyperpigmentation. A few months later, my scars seem to show more, maybe due to loss of facial fat. Another derm told me genesis cutera for texture problems as my scars are shallow to moderate. To me, they're pretty deep. He did an awful job with subcision, I see no difference in my scars. My question is, what would you recommend? PRP? Fillers? Laser? Please keep in mind that I get discoloration easily (like I did after a dermapen session, the brown spot is still there after a year). Thank you in advance!

  14. Punch excision in Europe?

    Forums Scar treatments 3 replies

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows a doctor in Europe (continental Europe if possible) who does punch excisions. I was searching online and contacted dozens of clinics, but so far no luck. No one does punch excisions in my country, so I would have to travel. I have a lot of ice pick scars, so I was thinking of doing excisions. Have already had TCA cross done, but it didn't work. My dermatologist recommended Fraxel Repair, but I heard it doesn't work on ice pick scars. Help!
  15. My acne seems to be in remission- the only times I get pimples is during PMS. But after years and years of teenage acne cure experiments(such as popping and accidentally popping sits) and acne, I am now let with gazillion tiny holes that's really unattractive and unflattering. I do glycolic peels when possible and when I have zits my hands are far away. What would one recommend to fix or fill these holes up? Pics included- ignore my weird stubby nose. thank you
  16. Hey. I've managed to clear my face of acne for the most part and i'm happy with my skin now, however I have a lot of small scarring left over that I'd like to improve. Retinol, dermarolling, oil cleansing and lifestyle changes seemed to have helped clear my complexion and scarring the most, I don't have any other 4k photos like these, but my skin was so rough, congested, scarred and irritated all the time that it's pretty amazing where i'm at now. but of course, I still want to improve. any suggestions on the remaining scars, large pores and generally bad texture to treat my skin would be much appreciated. both photos are captured with natural light and should show you a good bit of progress from where I was at acne wise. thanks!

  19. Need some help

    Forums Scar treatments 3 replies

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I need some suggestions/opinions for possible treatments for my acne scars(please check the pics for details). I gave a visit to my local derm last week and he suggested me doing subcision/filler treatment or laser for some of the boxcar type scars I have and TCA cross for ice picks(I know there is a risk of hyperpigmentation for darker type skin like mine). For the filler, I don't feel comfortable using anything that is permanent like bellafill. I'm also against doing any aggressive laser due to the risks and the cost. After reading some of the threads in this forum, it seems like my best bet is to go w/ subcision and TCA cross treatments together, but do you guys think I will benefit from using HA fillers together w/ subcision for my type of scarring? Or would just the multiple rounds of subcision be sufficient? If I do decide to use the filler, I'm probably going to use Juvederm, which isn't permanent. Thank you and any comments would be appreciated.
  20. Deep Ice Pick Scar (with pics)

    Forums Scar treatments 13 replies

I have this really deep ice pick scar on my face from years ago. It's extremely noticeable, as you can see. Everyone keeps asking if I've had my cheek pierced in the past, which I haven't. Its impossible to conceal and, for want of a better way to describe it, it fills up with dirt and makeup. I've spoken to the dermatologist who told me not to get an excision due to the scaring it would leave. Is this scar a good candidate for TCA? Its extremely deep.
  21. Solutions for Acne Scars on Forehead

    Forums Scar treatments 2 replies

I'm currently looking into solutions for my acne scars. I have them most prominently on my forehead, and parts of my chin. I'm attaching a few different photos of my forehead, in different lighting. In some lighting it can just appear as larger pores or barely noticeable. I think? However, under harsh lighting and bright sun the scars can appear far more apparent. I feel self conscious in stores with bad lighting or when people sit close to me. I'm wondering how bad do you think my scaring actually is and what procedure might be most suitable for my skin type?
  22. What kind of scars are these?

    Forums Scar treatments 1 reply

I had a massive break out this summer after 1.5 years of clear skin following roaccutane 01/2015-06/2015. I have also had a previous round of roaccutane that kept me clear for 4 years 06/2009-09/2014. The break out was sudden and lasted multiple months. I finally went to a derm who gave me duac, doxycycline and differin. I came off the doxy after 6 weeks. The duac was great and I stopped using it after 12 weeks to try and avoid antibiotic resistance. Im still using the differin at night to keep my cheeks clear and help heal whatever these are ( I suspect ice pics and some boxcars with a touch of hyperpigmentation?). I've also added in Sallycylic acid in the am and benzoyl peroxide 2.5 % for my forehead as it has always been a bit temperamental but clears up quickly with BP. My skin is quite red since I added in the the SA but I think it will calm down soon (hopefully). My question is, what exactly are these scars? And will they heal? Should I be doing anything else to help them? My routine: Am: Cetaphil oily skin cleanser wait 15-20 minutes SA 2% Paulas Choice BHA Wait 20 minutes BP apply BP to forehead Wait 20 minutes Apply Body Shop Tea Tree Matt Lotion Apply factor 50 Sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun (Also use physical barrier) PM: Cetaphil oily skin cleanser Wait 15-20 minutes Apply differin to cheeks Apply BP to forehead Wait 30 minutes Apply Bepanthen Moisturising Cream
  23. I highly doubt they would. I've never seen it before. Girls would pick an obese man over a guy with acne and scars and I don't mean a pimple or two but an entire face marred in acne and deeply inflamed. I'm about to be 21 and never kissed a girl because of the way I look. I know that's the reason. I slowing accepting the fact that I'm going to have to see a prostitute sometime.
  24. Any advice on ice-pick scars?

    Forums Scar treatments 1 reply

Hi everyone, I suffered from cystic acne from the age of 16 it has now cleared up thankfully I only get an occasional whitehead but I was left with scarring. I did have some boxcar scarring and also some rolling scars so I researched and decided to get derma rolling (micro rolling) done, I done it once with a dermatologist but then started doing it myself at home and had some good results as my boxcar and rolling scars are now gone. Unfortunately I am still left with small pitted holes that look like open pores on my cheeks, I believe these are called icepick scars? I researched into these again and came across TCA so I went ahead and had a 50% deep TCA peel with a dermatologist as I read it has good results on scarring, I am now three days post peel and have started to peel but the new skin underneath still seems to have the icepick scars. I'm not sure if I'm judging too early and if they get better over time so I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has had one done and how long it took for results? Also if anyone thinks TCA cross would be a better option for icepick scars? Or if I should just continue on with derma rolling for results. Please give any advice you can. Thanks
