  1. Cyst near my eye

    Forums Adult acne 2 replies

Hi, this cyst popped up a couple of days ago. I’ve had the same issue in the same area three different times over the past five years. I wish I could have insurance and get on accutane and stop this once and for all! I had to cancel an acting gig tomorrow because of it :-( has anyone else ever had this issue? Cysts popping up in the same areas over time? Ahhh I feel like a monster
  2. Hi there - I've been on quite the journey for the past 4 months that I'd like to share with you. DAY 1 - It all started with a bump on my cheek the size of a nickel. DAY 2 - 15: Throughout the next 15 days it continued to get larger. Probably didn't help that I was jabbing needles into it trying to find the head. I assumed the whole thing was inflated with pus. Very little came out. The biggest mistake was using a derma-roller (sooo dumb. not sure what result I was expecting). By day 15 it looked like this: See those two bumps to the top and bottom left? The end up causing big trouble but also great relief. Day 15 - Around day 15 I was desperate to find relief. Although the growth didn't hurt, it looked super strange - to the point that I was wearing a bandaid to work. I couldn't find anyone in Toronto who would perform a draining, but I did find someone who could perform a quick cortisone shot, which provided relief for a few days. Immediately after the shots, the bump was larger (due to the fluid within) but it slowly subsided. Day 16 to 30 - the bump slowly disappeared and left a flat dark spot. Day 30 to 45 - The bump quickly grew back and eventually looked exactly the same as it did at its worst - then grew about 3x even larger than that. It was HUGE. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture (too busy being anxious). By day 45 I had lined up an appointment with a dermatologist/plastic surgeon combo - though a few days before the appointment, the cyst popped. The pus was white, had no smell, and seeped through those two bumps previously mentioned. Day 45 to 60 - The area where the cyst existed was slightly bumpy for a few days, but eventually flattened out. By around Day 60, I noticed the bump slowly returning. I panicked and called the plastic surgeon - hoping to have the underlying cyst removed. By this point, the bump looked like this: I took this picture with especially hard lighting so you could see the two small ice pick scars around the left side. Those were the points where the fluid had drained. I hated the holes more than the bump itself. Day 70 - Saw the surgeon. He had suggested waiting 2 months before doing any sort of procedure, as sometimes the previously inflamed skin could scar over very badly. He said that we should wait to see if the bump calms down, or if it becomes largely inflamed again. Days 70 to 120 - The bump remained fairly stable. Some days it felt bigger or smaller - but overall remained unchanged. After the two months had passed, it was time for the incision. The doctor aimed to remove the underlying cyst, associated scar tissue and the deep ice pick scars. The procedure was a success - he was able to cut the scar tissue away. Apparently the cyst wall would be within the scar tissue. He warned that because the removed such a thick ball, it may create a dimple where the cyst was. Luckily this spot isn't the worst to have a dimple. WARNING - GROSS PICTURES AHEAD The removed scar tissue: It's now one week after the surgery and the stitches are removed. There a bit of pinkness and uneven skin texture, but this should resolve within the next few weeks to months. I'm noticing a bit of dimpling. Doc says it will probably get a bit worse before it gets better (usually these sorts of dimples will fill in themselves). Wish me luck throughout the healing process! And let me know if you guys have any questions. I left out some details for an easier read -but happy to help where I can. BTW, this is the guy who performed the procedure. So amazing. Totally professional and clearly cares about his patients: https://www.ashlinalexander.com/
  3. i had a small red cyst on my face for about 4-5 months now and i finally got sick of waiting for it to go away i got a cortisone shot and the hard lump under my skin is gone but the area is starting to sink my skin is black/purple where the red cyst mark was?? is this okay and will it ever go away
  4. I'm dealing with hormonal-based cystic acne at the age of 41, due to having stopped taking oral birth control 13 months ago. My body is in flux and I just am trying to keep up with my skin's (hormones') overreaction to everything that I eat. I've read that some people can reduce the size of a cyst by applying a topical Cortisone treatment; sadly, everything I see available--e.g., Cortizone cream and gel--contain at least one ingredient that seemingly would irritate an already inflamed cyst, if not encourage it to enlarge. Is there such a thing in the U.S. as a Cortisone cream (or gel) that can safely be used on cystic acne? I don't care if it's by prescription only, as there at least is a chance of it being covered by my insurance. Thank you, PI

  6. It started with a small mark on my face which I was worried could develop into some cystic acne, I for the most part have clear skin since accutane but before that I had it really rough talking like 2-3 acne cysts on my face at a time in bad areas, so accutant really helped but every once in a while I still get cysts. Anyways I panicked of course and after a week went to my derm and asked for a cortisone shot which I had had once before and thought it was a miracle. They did it and I left happy. After a couple of days I noticed the size go down a lot but it turned a purple ish colour. After a week it was completely flat but still purple maybe a very slight bit of indenting but hardly if any but certainly purple. Another week and a half went by and then the colour started to fade, I finally thought this was going to be behind me but then a small bump pops up. And it is certainly still small but it's still noticeable and killing my confidence I NEED IT GONE ASAP. Should I ask for another cortisone shot? Should I do a laser treatment that my derm seemed sort of keen on (I'm just worried this won't work that well and will take long). Please I need opinions. Thank you
  7. Hey I'm 13 and I've had this same red lump on the side of my Jose underneath my eye. I believe it's a cyst, except it has no pain at all. BP isn't working, icing isn't and heating it and drawing it to a head isn't working. My mom said if it stays she'll take me to a derm. School starts soon so I wanted to know if 13 is too young for a cortisone shot.
  8. Hi, new to the forum. I am really beating myself up for a poor, poor decision I made during April. About me - 25 year old male. For 4 years, I've had an extremely unusual bald patch in my beard, right on my jawline. The thing is, I was not dealing with a "patchy" beard. It is coarse in other areas, even the cheeks. the left side of my face grows thick facial hair. I told myself at age 21 that if I didn't start seeing an improvement by age 25 that I would address it. I have done tons of research and spent countless hours on how i could stimulate hair growth in the patch. I tried every conservative treatment out there that you could find online. No results. I decided NOT to give into to applying rogaine, which has become popular for beard growth these days (believe it or not) due to concerns about the systematic effects that applying it on the face can have (including heart issues). I had read up on some people having a lot of success with cortisone injections into the beard for alopecia. It really seemed like this is what I was dealing with. So i went into the dermatologist and didn't shave for a few days so they could see for themselves what I was dealing with. She told me that any dermatologist would tell me that that's what I must be dealing with based on observing my face. To get to the point, the side effects weren't fully communicated to me, but I sort of knew about the "dent" risk going in and thought the potential reward outweighed the risk, as i thought the side effects were rare. I got my first shot during the 3rd week of April and experienced no side effects (up to 3 weeks). I then received a second injection mid-May. 2 weeks later, I noticed a dent/atrophy. Picture attached shows how it is right now. The dent has been there about 6 days, and I haven't seen an improvement. The picture doesn't really do it justice, I'm going to be honest, honest, it's really bad and very noticeable. Symptoms: 1) atrophy/dent 2) very wrinkly/thin skin, especially when I squeeze around it 3) white hue I'm honestly rattled right now... my confidence is shot and I'm so down right now. I've scoped every historical thread on these forums up and down, and while the majority of anecdotes out there will tell you these dents are usually temporary, it's not really enough to give me peace of mind because there is some chance it could be permanent. Things could be worse but this is a really crummy way to start out my summer. What am i seeking: 1) maybe some success stories? 2) at what point should I consider saline injections, which I've read can be effective? 3) any other words of wisdom are appreciated. Thanks for reading
  9. I just rushed into a derm to get my first cortisone shot. I don't think it's a cyst - I believe the derm said it was a papule - but it's a relatively large, blind, inflamed pimple on the right side of my chin. And it's resisting everything I've thrown at it - aspirin, turmeric, honey, Desitin, Calamine lotion, salicylic acid, tamanu oil, lavender essential oil... So she agreed to put a drop or two of diluted cortisone in it. I assume 1-2 drops is standard? And I know diluted is safer when it comes to avoiding any dents showing up afterward. She told me it could take about a week, though, which surprised me. Everything online seems to say it works within 24-48 hours, 72 at worst. I'll be very curious to see how this goes... What I'm wondering is, has anyone ever tried putting a hydrocolloid bandage on their pimple after getting a cortisone shot? It's a blind pimple, but since it was just stabbed with a needle (a thin one, but still, a needle!), I was wondering if putting one of these bandages on it could help. I mean, isn't there a tiny opening in the pimple now? But maybe it'll be closed up by the time I can get home and slap one on... I'm just curious if anyone has done this. I'm terrified of making it worse.
  10. Hi guys, I'm in agony here! I got a massive cyst on my face more than 3 months ago. My dermatologist said it was too hard to drain and gave me a cortisone injection. It went down for about month, then came back and even spread a little. After a lot of home remedies and heat packing (none or which worked) I ended up going to get it surgically drained. The dermatologist made a small incision, squeezed it a lot, dug around with a scalpel and put a bandage on it. While she was able to get a lot out, it was still swollen afterwards. That never got better, so now two weeks later I have basically a red-purple cyst on my face that is just 30% smaller. I can't even see the incision anymore. I'm not sure if I should try to get it surgically drained a second time or not. I'm just wondering what went wrong with the surgery and if anyone else has had this happen? She didn't irrigate the site, or give me any antibiotics to take afterwards, as I'm on a low-dose doxycycline (40mg) all the time. If you've had a cyst drained, did the surgeon rinse it out and did you have to take a course of antibiotics afterwards? I want to make sure I do it right this time so my face isn't scarred too badly! Thanks!
  11. Hi guys, I'm hoping some of you might have advice on what I should do! I've had cystic acne and rosacea for a number of years, but it's mostly around my mouth, so not that severe. Two+ months ago I got a huge, swollen lump between my mouth and jaw, which was so much worse than any spot I'd had before. I went to my dermatologist who said it was just acne, but that it was too hard to try to surgically drain. He gave me a cortisone injection (first time I've had one!) and it went down by at least 50%. Since then, I've just been waiting for it to magically disappear. Two weeks ago it got swollen again, and it looks terrible. It's about 3/4" in diameter and red. It's much softer and more painful this time, so maybe it could be cut out, but I'd prefer to try something less invasive first. Has anyone had a cortisone shot fail like that, or had to get a second one months later? I don't want to overdo it since they can cause craters. Any suggestions on how to draw it up or get it to heal? I've been heat packing it, but nothing is really happening yet. I'm also taking zinc, fish oils, and using topical niacin. Many thanks!! Here it is: *shudder*
  12. Hi. I,m 23 and had absolutely spotless skin before Jan 2016 (no breakouts even in teenage). Fast forward, due to relationship problems and financial struggles during this year, my break out kept on getting worse. I NEVER had a simple pimple on my cheeks (see last image) and now they are spectacularly marked. I tried lemon juice, honey, apple cider vinegar, egg whites, aloe vera, cucumber at different times- you name it. I also used Avene anti redness cream and cortisone topical cream because the horrible red patches on my cheeks look very unpleasant. All of these helped but only temporarily. I must add that the situation was a lot worse with recurring white heads and redness in the T zone and on the cheeks but at least now the T zone is cleared but the redness and the recurring whiteheads on the cheeks still remain. Can someone please clarify the following? 1) whether the same type of creams (cortisone). toners (non alcohol) can be used for acne/ whiteheads and scars/ redness? 2) whether I should also try ibuprofen tablet paste OR retinoid cream to decrease inflammation? 3) most importantly if this will disappear from the cheeks without leaving scars? I am vegetarian, trying to adopt more exercise/meditation in my life. used to eat carbs a lot, now seriously cutting back for the past 2 months. Since I do not wear make up a lot (never did) so it can become quite discouraging and hurtful when some people treat you rather condescendingly. I never had breakouts before so it is even more depressing to cope with it knowing that this happened after a very severe early life crisis. Would appreciate all the advice and kind words of support.

HELP! Can someone identify what these are and what would be the most suitable regimen for treating these? Hi. For those who have received a kenalog injection or cortisone injection to a cystic pimple, when did you start noticing skin atrophy? I had mine done almost 24 hours ago, and while it's completely flattened out, I still feel a small bump. It isn't visible from looking. No skin atrophy. When will I be in the clear? When did you guys start seeing skin atrophy (if any) after treating a cystic pimple with an injection? And if you didn't see any skin trauma or atrophy, please share that too.
  15. Okay. Here is my situation. I don't break out often and have generally what people call "clear skin". However, in the last year I've experienced some cystic acne around the time of my menstrual cycle- this has only happened twice so far. Six months ago I got a quarter sized cyst on my cheek that lasted a month, and because I couldn't wait, I popped it. Big mistake. It left an indented scar which I have now learnt to cover with make-up. The scar isn't big, but for someone who has never scarred before, I was shocked that acne can do that to you. I was pretty depressed for a month. Flash forward to my newest and second cyst. It's pretty small (2x2mm) but very painful and very red. The surrounding area looks like a war zone and funnily enough, same area as last cyst. Popped up yesterday and I have no idea what to do. Really considering a cortisone shot but the indented scarring would crush me. How likely is it that I will get an indented scar? Also, what if I just tried some topical treatments like BP and a touch of hydrocortisone cream with a hydrocolloid band-aid? You know, let it be for a week and see what happens? Side note: I am already on apo-cephalex (started today) because of a shin injury at resulted in a horrific cut. So should I wait for the antibiotics To kick in? Scarring is my number one fear.
  16. Recently my acne has started to clear up, I'm barely getting new pimples anymore. But the one thing that hasn't changed is my cysts. I have 2 or 3 under my jaw and a couple places on each cheek where I can feel a bump under my skin. I've had some of them for a while, but what will happen? Will they eventually come out or will they just stay there as bumps forever? My derm told me that he could drain any acne I had the last time I saw him but he never mentioned cortisone shots. Anyway, what's the best way to completely get rid of a cyst? Cortisone shot, getting it drained, or just icing it and doing nothing? I've been putting salicylic acid and then BP on them twice a day but I'm not seeing much improvement.
  17. Ive had this cystic pimple on my nose for about 9 days and im about to move into my college dorm. I dont want everyone to see my nose so I went to get a cortisone shot. I seen a lot of people say it was painless. However mine was very painful. Also we I got home it tripled in size. As of right now it shrunk a little but still bigger than before. Is this normal? Any advice or intel would help. Please give dead honest responses. Thanks

  19. A nurse at my derms office suggested a filler but then I was reading that it may not work and may turn deformed. I started reading about subcision- not a procedure I want to go through because it looks invasive and I'd probably have to travel to Toronto (trusted surgeons). Its been a year since my first injection in that spot- but then had to get another about 2 months ago because a new cyst formed over top of my partially healed previous cyst (which also had a small dent). It seems that my last injection in that spot made the dent a little bigger Would you you suggest subcision? Anyone go through this procedure?
  20. Hi guys - first time poster who is panicking. I got my first cortisone shot for a rapidly inflamed blackhead (which was deeper than I even realized, so I'm glad I went in) last night at around 7 PM. My derm told me not to apply any lotion/exfoliant to the injection site/nodule afterwards and just gently wash and treat with a warm compress before bed. This morning, I think the swelling has gone down but I applied a tiny bit of aczone (as I normally do with cystic pimples) followed by my standard sunscreen moisturizer. In retrospect, I wonder if that was dumb. I have a lot of anxiety about my skin right now. I figured that aczone couldn't cause any further harm as it's an anti-inflammatory and, given that I was going to walk into work, sunscreen is a must. I've also read that make-up immediately post cortisone injection is fine. Please help me; could I have maybe made things worse? I haven't picked or otherwise touched the injection location.
  21. This is my first post and I know there's other posts about this but I have been getting really depressed and I need to talk to people who understand what I'm going through because none of my friends or family understand. They think it's comforting so say "oh it's not that bad" but that's easy to say when it's not on your face and you don't feel violated by a dermatologist. I was on accutane for nine months. My final accutane check up was in April (2016) and during that appointment, my dermatologist decided to inject a bump that was under my skin on my cheek. The bump did not hurt, it was not physically visible, you could simply feel a little bump under the skin. My dermatologist did not tell me there were any side effects to the shot (if I knew it could cause atrophy, I obviously would not have done it), I did not sign anything accepting any risks. That same night, I noticed the skin around that area turned white, it lost its pigmentation. Then a week later, the area began to sink. At first I just thought the skin was just getting darker but it was also starting to dimple. It has been getting worse and worse and my dermatologist kept brushing me off until I started asking for information about why I wasn't informed of side effects or given any consent forms to sign for the procedure. She even entered in her report that she injected a "large, painful, red, and swollen cyst" on my left cheek. LIAR. Finally she agreed to see me (June 2016). She tried to deny that the obvious atrophy was from the cortisone at all, she tried to say it's because there was a bump there, and now there's not. Simple as that. Of course that could have played a part but this dent is SUFFICIENTLY larger than the little bump that was there to begin with. It looks like someone put a cigarette out on my cheek. I am so devastated. I've been suffering on accutane and my skin finally looks amazing and then she deformed me on my LAST VISIT. I feel so cheated and no matter what I do, I can't be proud of my face. I was offered laser treatment (by a different and far more experienced dermatologist) as my best option. Since it was free, I decided to try it. I've had one laser treatment and there is no improvement yet but she says it could take three treatments. They said saline shots won't help. I just want to know if anyone has had luck with laser treatment or just any luck at all with the atrophy filling in. I'm trying to hold on to some hope that this will go away. Thank you for reading my rant, this has been eating away at me (quite literally). Any response is welcome. Please help
  22. I have been on a healthy eating kick since about January and have lost about 30lbs since then. That being said, I was on a mini vacation this last Thurs-Monday and I was NOT good at all lol.. between eating JUNK and drinking a lot of alcohol my body freaked out. Not only did I run into stomach issues but my chin broke out too. It affected me more than I thought it would! I had these five huuuuge cyst/nodules on my face in the MIDDLE of a bachelorette weekend. And of course I was picking at them and loading them with product to no avail. It was one of those things you had to leave alone and let it do it's thing. It killed my confidence. Luckily I already had a derm apt for yesterday to check on my progress with Spiro. The new doctor I found and loved actually left the practice so they set me up with one of their PAs and she is so awesome! She asked me about my chin and suggested some Cortisone shots to just tame this breakout and move on. I had never gotten them before and was worried about pain and cost but it turns out my insurance covered it (something about the way it is billed.. I don't know the specifics). The pain wasn't bad either. And, I am very happy with the results. Here are some pics. This was right before she injected me. For some odd reason my phone makes it look less intense than what it really was. This was a few hours after And this was this morning.. Not bad!
  23. Okay, so I suffer from very light-mild, well-controlled acne but I have one pimple on my cheek that has been there for between 4 and 6 months. It's very small and painless, but I can feel the lump of it under the skin and very occasionally it will flare up. I was considering getting a cortisone injection for it just to get rid of it once and for all. This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if I get a cortisone injection in that spot, will a pimple ever be able to resurface there or does it kind of close off that pore in a sense? Thanks all!
