About this blog

25 year old female with a long history of acne; went through 2 rounds of Accutane (w/dermatologist supervision) and 3 years of low-dose Accutane (unsupervised); haven't had much issues with acne until recently (hormonal most likely); decided to revisit Zinc

WEEK 11 (2.5 MONTHS):
- I stopped posting for a while because midterms started coming up and I got very busy. I think I may be posting less frequently though as i don't see me having any skin epiphanies anytime soon lol
- I have currently a few spots (active) and a lot of healing ones on my cheek (those honeslty kind of come and go and I swear it's due to not washing my makeup brushes frequently enough)
- I have not had any super inflammed or itchy/painful hormonal spots around my mouth anymore & I can say with confidence that I am absolutely certain it is becasuse of the zinc! I plan to continue to take zinc from now on. I am convinced that it has had a positive impact on my skin and acne issues

Here are some pictures from tonight:

WEEK 6/7 (I skipped a week):
- I finally overcame the majority of that awful hormonal breakout, for the most part && most importantly no spotting/bleeding issues (sorry tmi)
- now that I'm in week 7,  I can say that I am overall happy with how zinc has been helping me out with my skin
- the primary improvements are seen in the reduction of hormonal acne around my mouth area which is AMAZING because that's what bothered me the most
- I currently have a few minor cysts on the sides of my face (jawline/under chin) but nothing that seriously bothers me (shown in pics)
- I feel as though my hormones are maybe even a little more stabilized and I'm not as moody/grumpy (which isn't a whole lot to begin with but still)
- skin/hair seem more or less the same as far as oiliness goes, maybe the slightest reduction in it, but nothing to write home about
- I am going to continue this blog until I finish the bottle and then I feel as though I will be able to provide my final thoughts on zinc 30mg (specifically optzinc) and its effects on my acne
- as it stands right now, I think I want to continue taking it, even if it doesn't overall provide massive changes, it's enough to keep me on it!

**provided some pictures from tonight, but they are from my iphone so less quality..

**sometimes I wonder if this blog is even helping anyone out there, I see that it gets some views but this is way less interaction than when I posted my Accutane blog years ago.. *sigh* hopefully I'm helping someone make a decision on whether or not to try zinc

WEEK 5:
- last week I took my zinc pill at 1pm, literally right around the time I take my birth control pill and I started to bleed the next day and for many days after, barely stopped yesterday actually, I also broke out
- It's finally getting better, it wasn't super terrible but it was a bad breakout generally
- don't really have much more to update, I feel like next week will show more improvement overall, so here are some pictures:

Zinc Blog 3 (WEEK 4)

WEEK 4:
- I am pleased to update that my skin has continued to improve into week 4 on zinc
- I still breakout, still somewhat frequent (but a little less frequent than before) but when I do breakout, they are so minor and tiny; hardly ANY at all are inflamed/cystic
- I have really seen a reduction in the acne around my mouth/jawline which is amazing
- as far as oiliness goes, I feel that my skin is back to the norm for me, which was combo skin; mildly oily t-zone and dry cheeks
- I don't think I mentioned this in my previous posts but when I started to take zinc initially, it seemed as though I saw an increase in oil production, which was really noticeable in my hair/scalp (it made it difficult to wash and it felt like straw--which you would think was a sign of dry hair) and as of now in week 4, it's better but still my hair isn't as manageable as before
- I have been monitoring the bleeding issue (sorry for the TMI) and I have still been noticing um brown discharge but no actual blood, haven't attempted sex though yet..

**P.S. kind of random but taking zinc isn't doing anything to help me ward off colds/flus/other viruses.. I have gotten sick 2x now within a month since being on zinc! I thought it was supposed to help strengthen our immune system!

Anyways, lets see how the picture updates came out:

Zinc Blog 2 (WEEK 3)

WEEK 3:
- the breakouts that popped up on my chin/jawline area have definitely calmed down a lot (sooo happy)
- I think I notice slightly oilier skin since being on zinc, but during week 3 now, it seems less noticeable and probably closer to what my skin was normally at (combination skin, but not overly oily t-zone)
- the breakouts are much less inflammed, itchy, and painful
- I notice a somewhat steady/usual occurrance of spots on my face though, in the usual places (hairline, forehead, around mouth, etc.)--so I haven't noticed a decrease in occurrances of spots at all
- not sure if this is relevant but during sex yesterday I noticed I started to bleed, which used to happen on vitamin d3 (I think it affected my hormones, once I stopped taking it, it stopped entirely).. I hope it was just because I wasn't really "ready" for it, and not because zinc is affecting my hormones similarly, had some minor spotting today as well that I'm sure is related to yesterday

I have to be honest with you guys, the breakout was getting so bad in the beginning/middle of week 3 that I really considered quitting, but it seems it might have possibly been an "initial breakout" and hopefully things keep getting better from here on out

Posting some pics from tonight after washing up:
**P.S. if you guys are curious as to the discoloration of my skin, they kind of look like really uneven freckles, that's due to excessive sun exposure and sun damage from when I was on Accutane for so many years.. even with sun protection, that accumulated over the years.

Hello there, this is my first blog where I report my improvements using Zinc to treat my persistent, painful acne.

Lets get the basics out of the way real quick:
- I'm 25, female
- currently taking Zinc (as Zinc methionine) 30 mg (OptiZinc by Source Naturals) which also contains Copper (as Copper Sebacate) 288 mcg
- also currently taking a women's multivitamin that also contains 15mg of Zinc (as Zinc Oxide) (2+ years) and Yaz birth control pill (8+ years)
- I avoid dairy (not lactose intolerant, just prefer to not ingest it) and don't eat much red meat
- acne is primarily found around my lips/mouth/chin area and more recently right under my chin near my neck (inflamed, itchy, whiteheads, cysts, sore/painful)
- been taking the OptiZinc for 2 weeks and a day now

WEEK 1:
- after a week, there is much less acne overall and less inflammed acne
- all inflammed pre-existing acne has gone down
- a few new pimples have formed (whiteheads) but not too many

WEEK 2:
- heavily increased hormonal acne around mouth/chin area
- very inflammed, very painful and itchy
- most spots are coming to a white head or are a cyst
- feeling a little discouraged but I will continue taking these pills for AT LEAST 12 weeks since I hear that is usually a good amount of time to see whether or not things are actually improving or not (I wonder if this is an "initial breakout" like on Accutane.. I hope so

**I added a photo from week 1, and later tonight I'll add a photo from today for week 2, sorry for the "deer in the headlights" look I have going on
