Using EFT for Emotional and Acne Freedom

I want to share some of the EFT tapping that I used to help heal zits and breakouts.

For those new to EFT, you learn it from this short pdf guide, and you'll be able to follow along with the tapping rounds I have below. I promise it will make sense once you've read it.

I would usually tap one or two rounds on acne in general, and then focus in on the individual aspects of my acne that were bothering me. Targeting specific this about it gave the best results. It felt kind of uncomfortable at first, but being as lurid and descriptive as possible when creating setup statements brought the most relief. I tapped on any aspects that came to mind for me, especially the parts which carried a strong negative emotional charge, such as whiteheads or cysts.

Using the specific location of the acne, like the chin, forehead or back also helped to create effective setup statements, and I even did tapping rounds on individual zits that were bothering me.

Even though I have all this acne on my skin, I love and accept myself.

Even though I have this pimple on my cheek, I love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I have these zits around my mouth, I may be okay with myself anyway.

Even though I have this painful pimple on my chin, I may be able to be okay with myself.

Even though this zit is painful to the touch, I can love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I have these painful bump just below the skin, I may be able to accept other parts of myself anyway.

Even though I have these whiteheads on my skin, I love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I have these huge white zits on my cheekbone, I’m okay with other parts of me.

Even though I just want to pick at these whiteheads, I love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I have this itchiness, I love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I need to itch this acne so much, I may be okay with myself anyway.

As soon as I finished the tapping rounds targeting the itchiness, I felt a sensation like cool water running down over my face, and the itchy feeling was completely gone. This was one of the most physically beautiful feelings of relief I’ve ever gotten from EFT.

I often tapped several rounds on the redness and inflammation before I left the house, or before I went into a social situation. It was remarkable because my acne would fade, the redness would lessen, and pimples would simply not stand out against the rest of my skin so much.

Even though I have all this redness on my skin, I can think about loving and accepting myself anyway.

Even though I have this inflammation on my cheeks, I’m okay with myself anyway.

Even though I have these zits that are red and inflamed on my cheek, I love and accept myself anyway.

Even though I have this oily skin, I may be able to love and accept other parts of myself.

Even though I have this dry skin, I might be okay with myself anyway.

Another technique that I used was to describe the feelings that I wanted to feel. This is a very inspirational part of acne tapping, where we simply let our imagination go free and create the best outcome that we could wish for.

Even though I have this redness on my cheeks, I can feel it fading away, and I deeply accept myself.

Even though I have this inflammation on my face, I choose to feel coolness suffusing my face and my skin growing pale and clear.

Even though I have this acne, I can feel it healing and fading away to nothing. I feel my skin growing smooth and beautiful.

The most dramatic healing I experienced was when three very large and painful pimples appeared on my cheek one day. I knew from past experience that these zits where the kind that took a full week to begin healing, were extremely painful to the touch, and afterwards left red marks that lasted for months.

I tapped for about 20 minutes, covering all aspects that I could think of. Several hours later, I realized that they were no longer painful to the touch. Within two days they were completely gone, without even leaving a red mark. I was blown away. As far as my acne went, this kind of healing was unprecedented.

Not all of my tapping was that dramatic or successful, but to this day it stands as a mark of just how fast and dramatically EFT can heal.

In addition to the dramatic healings I experienced, EFT improved the overall healing of my acne. Zits and cysts healed sooner, left fewer marks or scars, and went through their healing cycle much faster. In many cases, tapping for acne that I could feel under the skin which hadn’t yet appeared, would eliminate it entirely so that it never developed into zits at all.

In the setup statement, saying that we love and accept ourselves can be challenging, especially since acne often represents everything that we cannot accept about ourselves. Instead of “I love and accept myself deeply,” I would sometimes tap into other parts of my body or skin that I was okay with. Doing this helped move my concentration from that part of me (my skin) which I didn’t accept, and shift to other parts that I had positive (or at least no negative) feelings about, such as my ankle or big toe. It could even be quite humorous, locating and appreciating parts of myself that I didn’t often think about. It allowed me to begin tapping into good feelings about my body, which is a powerful step when dealing with acne.

Even though I have this acne on my cheeks, I love and accept the smooth skin on my arm.

Even though I have these marks on my face, I’m totally okay with my right foot.

Even though I have breakouts all over my face, I love that my leg works so well.

Even though I have this inflammation on my cheeks, I’m really okay with my little toe.

These are just a few ideas for setup statements that can be used. It’s sometimes necessary to ‘test-drive’ a bunch of different setup statements before major shifts occur, but persistence will pay off here as we discover what our acne responds to the best.


In this post I'd like to show how to use EFT, which is what I used to eliminate the emotional factors in my life that were causing my acne.

For those unfamiliar with it, EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a simple self-help technique which enables you to quickly and easily resolve all kinds of painful negative emotions, whether past or present. By lightly tapping on a series of points on the face and upper body, EFT releases 'stuck' emotional energy, taking the charge out of painful or traumatic memories, helping physical symptoms as well. The basic technique can be learned in a few minutes. It can be used on yourself anytime, anywhere, and requires no outside help.

To that end, I've created this PDF file, which:

There’s been a lot of talk about stress and acne lately. I’d like to demystify the topic, in order to bring it under people’s control. I want to show a little bit about how this connection works, and how it can be used in a very tangible way for healing. The word ‘stress’ is so vague it almost has no meaning. To people who are stressed out, knowing you’re stressed doesn't really help, except that now you can be stressed about being stressed. I’d like to break it down and see what’s really behind it (and I promise that I won’t say stress that many times in one sentence again).

I had moderate to severe acne for five years. I found that I could get my acne under control by using topical regimens and creams, but it never offered real freedom from acne, and it required strict adherence in order to work. Stopping the regimen meant acne would always come back. I showed no signs of growing out of my acne either, as I progressed into adulthood. In addition, I suffered from depression and PTSD as a teenager, and couldn't stand up for myself.

I no longer have acne, and haven’t had a breakout in over six months. I wash my face once a day, and use moisturizer after I shower, which is all I’ve put on my face for a year and a half. My depression has lifted.

Deconstructing Stress

When we feel threatened, our bodies go into fight or flight mode, where a primitive part of our brain is literally bracing to save our lives. When this happens, parts of our bodies physically start to shut down and go into survival mode – including our skin. As far as the subconscious is concerned, there are more important and urgent things to put energy into, like getting us ready to fight or run for our lives. When this is the case, our skin is no longer regulated in a normal, healthy manner. Thus an overproduction of sebum, a weakness to bacteria and infection, and all the things which compromise the skin organ enough for acne to appear.

This is what stress is: our body believes it’s under attack, and so must prepare to defend itself. It’s like going onto a wartime footing, and every resource must be rationed. As far as our body is concerned, skin health is low on the list of priorities.

To be sure, stress manifests itself in many different ways, not just poor skin health. But for one segment of the population (namely us), acne is one of the major ways it shows up.

When I first began to understand that stress was created when I felt threatened, it changed how I saw my acne. Instead of fearfully (and depressingly) scrutinizing my eating habits, or worrying that a particular skin cream was causing a breakout, I started looking at my emotional life.

I began to see that I felt threatened in most areas of my life, and that this constant perception of danger was forcing my body to always be ready to defend itself. To be sure, much of this was happening in my subconscious, but this constant fear of attack was filtering up into my conscious mind as depression and anxiety.

What causes these feelings of danger?

So what was causing me to feel so threatened all the time? In short, my past. I had experienced a lot of trauma as a kid, thanks to very strict discipline and family beliefs. I had learned the hard way that many actions were not allowed, and would get me punished. Things like showing anger, standing up for myself, talking back, and interaction with friends had all be strictly controlled as a child. As a result, I had learned that many things were unsafe, and throughout my teenage years, these beliefs had stayed with me. As an adult, this showed up in many ways: I was uncomfortable around people, I couldn’t face any kind of authority figure, I was easily pushed around, and I carried a tremendous burden of guilt. I favored isolation, because only when I was alone did I really feel comfortable or safe.

Whenever we experience traumatic events (both big ‘T’ and little ‘t’ traumas) which feel threatening, it’s like our bodies take a recording of that event, and file it away in a vault. However, instead of having one secret code that we hide and forget about, these vaults can be opened by any number of codes, like sights, sounds, smells or feelings which remind us of the event. When this happens (usually subconsciously), our bodies automatically re-open the vault and activates the painful memory on cue, in order to prevent us from getting hurt the same way again. It’s a protection mechanism meant to keep us alive. In my case, there were hundreds of triggers that constantly reminded my subconscious of danger. Anything from the look on someone’s face to a random person shouting in the parking lot could trigger subconscious danger responses. My body reflected this chaotic and unpredictable emotional landscape.

Clearing Past 'Dangers'

As a child I had learned that a lot of things were unsafe. Yet as an adult, almost all these lessons were obsolete. I was big enough, strong enough and smart enough to take care of myself. I no longer needed to rely on caregivers to have my needs met, like I did as a child. This old programming was getting in the way by sending me danger signals where no danger existed anymore.

Freedom came when I started using EFT on these old memories of discipline and punishment. Once I started clearing them, I stopped responding to the triggers which use to make me feel unsafe. And when I stopped feeling unsafe, my body responded by healing rapidly on it’s own.

Physically, my acne improved, and eventually went away entirely.

Emotionally, I was no longer affected by people who use to set me off, or by situations that use to be threatening. I felt comfortable around people and in my own skin, and I could stand up for myself.

Almost as a side effect, my depression lifted.

None of this healing would have been possible if I hadn’t been introduced to EFT. This simple technique was the driving force behind all my emotional healing. It worked so thoroughly and effectively, that once I had used it on a painful memory, I rarely had to revisit it again. It moved my past experiences out of the ‘life threatening’ category, and turned them into ordinary memories. After just a few minutes of tapping, all that bottled up emotional pain would simply melt away.

Even after all this time, it still amazes me how fast things shift. The kind of emotional healing that could have taken years to accomplish, was happening before my eyes. I could actually see my responses and reactions to things change from day to day.

Many of the things which use to define me - being a loner, being a survivor, never trusting other people - lost their importance. I stopped needing to identify myself by the traumatic things that happened to me. As the pain was dealt with, there was room for the kind of life I had always wanted to live. The healing process was gradual, but the results have been worth every ounce of effort I put in.

What I love about this topic is that acne has lost it’s mystery. I use to be under tremendous pressure to isolate that ONE random thing in my diet or regimen which was causing me to breakout. That pressure is gone now, except as a positive force that inspires me.

Are diet and skin-care important? Yes, absolutely! Many people have done fantastic work demonstrating how diet, exercise, topical treatments and medication all affect acne.

I wanted to shed light on how our emotions also affect our acne, and the kind of improvements that are possible when we give our emotional health the same kind of attention and effort we give to our physical selves.
