Starting on 80mg of Accutane

Day 19

So now my skin feels rough to the touch, not from the dryness but if you look close, you can see that my pores are pushing out all the gunk and it's making my skin feel rough! GROSS. I haven't broken out from it, I did notice that wiping my face with a washcloth gets rid of some of the gunk in my pores so I'll try that so I don't break out. I also put some antibacterial first aid ointment on my chin to help prevent any whiteheads from forming and it seems to be helping too. Right now I only have one tiny pimple on my chin and my back has been clearing up nicely but I did notice this morning I have a monster growing on my shoulder that wasn't there yesterday. I'll just let it be. 20mg seems to be working well for me, not a lot of dryness anywhere and I'm still able to wear my contacts (although if I know I'm working late I will wear my glasses that day). No real side effects that are unbearable, hopefully my doc will let me stay at this dose!

Day 17

So now that I've reduced my dose to 10 mg I definitely have noticed that my skin has gotten oiler and I have broken out a bit more (I know it's not my IB yet). So today I decided to take 2 pills instead of one ~bad girl~. I'm hoping that 20 mg will be the right dose where my skin is no longer oily but I don't feel like puking all day or have constant flushing going on. Besides the new pimples, I have been noticing that my skin has been clearing up. The only weird thing that has been going on is that my pores on my nose/cheeks have gotten BIGGER and to me they look like I have freckles! Maybe they get bigger then smaller??? Who knows

Besides that, I have 3 cysts on my neck that will not go away. They aren't red but just SUPER annoying. Hopefully the accutane will get rid of those. Less than 2 weeks to go for Vegas!

Day 14

Two weeks down and I'm now on 10mg which is a huge change from the 80mg that I was initially prescribed. I didn't take anything yesterday and this morning I started on my 10mg. I think my body really needed that day off because now my redness has almost completely gone and I just feel better (I used to always feel like I was getting sick, you know achy and tired). What a difference 1 day was. I think I'm going to try and stay on a lower dose for my term like either 10 or 20 mg. Oh and another thing, my bacne has almost all cleared up, there's only about 2 or 3 cysts and there are some red marks from old spots but I'm sure they will clear up no problem.

Anyways, today is looking up!

Day 13

So my redness hasn't gone away. I iced my face all night last night and I woke up this morning with no change. It is red and blotchy and my husband says the left side is swollen. I know ppl are supposed to get a red face, but this isn't red because of my skin being irritated or dry or whatever. It's very warm to the touch and looks like I broke a bunch of blood vessels. It looks horrible. I phoned my doc immed this morning and she couldn't get me in but the nurse relayed the message and phoned me back saying that it is very common for ppl to get a 'lobster face' during the first 2 weeks and then it will eventually go away. Her recommendation was that I stop taking accutane for a few days, then she wrote out another prescription to start taking 10mg a day. I don't know how to get rid of the awful red blotches and burning (it feels like I'm constantly blushing on my left side only). I've been reading on the message boards that this is a common side effect but you should be very wary if it persists. Well it has been 24 hours with no improvement. I am lowering my dosage so that should ~fingers crossed~ help. In the meantime to calm the reddness, splotchyness and burning, any suggestions???

My face has been flushing and now whenever I get stressed out or the slightest bit embarrassed about anything, my face is instantly red and hot and stays that way for awhile. It is soooo frustrating since my work is primarily meeting with clients and when it occurs (I obviously can't control it) I look very unprofessional and get stressed out, which in turn makes it worse.

I went to the message boards to see what I can do and most everyone on there said that they developed flushing much later into their programs and that the flushings ended up turning into rosacea for most people. I don't want this to happen but I don't know what to do. I have an appt with my doc in a couple weeks and I will bring it up with her then but until then I don't know if I should lower my dose again to 40mg every other day or what.

Oh the joys of this medicine!

Day 11

OMG I thought I was dehydrated before, wow!! I can't seem to drink enough water, I swear I feel like a camel! You know the feeling when you drink an entire glass of water and then after your stomach is so full of water but your mouth is still dry? Well that's what I have, all the time now! I even had to wake up a few times in the middle of the night to have a drink of water.

My skin is now not too dry and not too oily, it's great. I still have some cysts though and I woke up this morning with one on my neck and one on my eyelid. Weird. Maybe this is the start of my IB?? Hopefully, better to get rid of it. I'm going to Vegas in 17 days and DO NOT want to be in the middle of my IB, wouldnt' that suck!

Day 10

I'm feeling a bit better today about this whole thing. I just need to be patient and suck it up.

This weekend my skin wasn't doing so bad, some cysts cleared up, no new ones to report, and it wasn't as dry as usual. I have been using a drop of jojoba oil mixed with my moisturizer and it seems to be working quite well. Hardly anymore flakies! My scalp is SOOO itchy though and I've been shampooing with the T-gel shampoo (which did get rid of the flakes) but it still remains flaky. I hear that you can put jojoba oil in your hair so I might give that a shot.

The only other thing that has been bothering me lately are my eyes. I've been wearing my glasses all weekend to not dry my eyes out any more than they already are but now they are SUPER itchy and watery. I'm not allergic to anything but I imagine that if I was, this is what it would feel like. I thought my eyes were supposed to get drier not waterier! Has anyone experienced this? I hope this won't last, I look crazy!!

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night and had a huge headache and my eyes felt like they were shriveled up. I put eye drops in but they still hurt. With all my dry skin (which looks WAY worse than when I would have a few cysts) and all the other things I just was feeling like 'why am I doing this'. I don't want to end up doing more damage with the side effects just to have clear skin. I know that I've only been on it for a week now and it's not as though I am wanting to see results in a week, I do understand that it is going to take some time to work. It's just is the pain worth it? I went on to the forums this morning and was reading what others wrote and I do have to say that it did give me inspiration to stick with it and stop being so negative. I just hate that I feel like I'm now so consumed with my skin and what it's doing, and what I can use for this side effect... and so on. It's neverending.

I don't know if I'm the only one feeling like that but if you are reading this, sorry, I just had to vent.

One week in!

One week in and I could tell that I'm getting dehydrated. Yesterday I couldn't drink enough water to satisfy my thirst so now I'm going to make sure I have water on hand at all times.

I also noticed that my scalp has become increasingly flaky and itchy. I bought some Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo, hopefully that will help.

My back is finally starting to clear up which is great!

One other thing, I had this really gross zit on my chin appear and turn to a whitehead. I tried popping it and it turned into a scab on my chin. Word to others, don't pop your zits no matter how large they are!!

Day 6-much better

Now that I'm down to 40mg, my side effects have been limited to flaky skin. I can deal with that. I tried using Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion on my face last night and the flakes went away. Before I would have NEVER used that on my face, I would have broken out immed.

Still no change on my back to speak of.

I am going to Vegas the second week of april to celebrate my birthday and my fear is that i'll be right in the middle of my IB then. PLEASE NO!! Can anyone tell me how long it took for their IB to clear up from start to finish?

Day 5

So yesterday was a horrible day. That awful, disgusting taste in my mouth lasted all day and it was making me sick to my stomach. Even drinking water was hard because the water would take on the metallicy flavour that was going on in my mouth. I was so close to vomiting by the time evening rolled around but went to bed and when I woke up, I felt much better. I talked to my doc and she said to cut back to 40mgs a day for a few days and then start alternating days with 40 and 80. So needless to say, I feel much better.

My skin on my face is peeling like crazy and I tried gently rubbing my face with a washcloth to get rid of the flakies but my skin feels very thin and burns for a bit after. Is the peeling supposed to last the entire time? It's just frustrating cause my acne is primarily on my back and there is no change at all (even no dryness) on my back. It seems to be the same as always.

I think I'm going to go out and get a tinted moisturizer since makeup looks awful. Well that's about all, if you do experience a WEIRD AWFUL METAL taste in your mouth, maybe your dosage is too high.

Day 4

Today I woke up with an AWFUL taste in my mouth and it won't go away. It tastes kinda chalky and no matter what I do I can't get rid of it. Any ideas?

No headaches yesterday or today so far so that's good. I think the eye gel is helping. I am also wearing my contacts today and so far so good. I brought my glasses just in case but hopefully it'll be fine.

My skin is really weird. It's super soft and moist (not oily) cause I've been moisturizing both in the am and pm (before I would only do it in the am and by evening my skin would be so oily) BUT it's super flaky. No matter how much moisturizer I put on, it's still flaky and the pimples I did have on my face (remember 90% of my acne is on my back) appear to have scabbed over and fallen off, leaving a dry space behind. I mean I'm not complaining I would way rather have flaky skin than pimples but it is weird considering how moist my skin actually is.

Well that's all i can think of right now, I think I'm going to go out and also get some vit E to take with my fish oil thanks to a comment posted earlier.

Day 3

Well today is Day 3 and when I woke up, the dull headache I had for the past day and a half is gone. We'll see how the rest of the day goes. I did put some Genteal eye gel (not gel drops) in my eyes last night to moisturize them so maybe that helped. I don't know what the headaches are from but I'm kinda thinking that it's from my eyes drying.

My skin seems to be clearing up but I know there's going to be an uphill battle before I am completely clear. It may be due to the time of month as well.

I've been moisturizing like crazy so I don't have any dryness yet. I couldn't find Aquaphor for your lips here in Canada so I ordered some off ebay. Everyone says it works wonders so I must try.

No muscle soreness yet, I do go to the gym 3 times a week but I don't have any out of the ordinary soreness.

I heard that if you eat fat when you take your pills it increases the absorption so I have been eating a handful of peanuts with my breakfast every morning.

I wonder if there is anyone who is taking or taken accutane and also wears RGP contact lenses, if so please drop me a line!

Here's to hoping my headache stays away!

Day 1 and 2

I will be 28 in a month and have been dealing with acne for a good 15 years. I do get pimples on my face (chin and cheeks) but the worst of it is and always has been on my back and my front. I have now gotten to the point where I just can't take it anymore. I have tried every product imaginable and have tried antibiotics and nothing seems to help. So here I am.

I have done tons of research and am quite paranoid when it comes to all the side effects. I'm hoping I can do as much as I can to minimize the side effects even though realistically it may be an empty dream. I started on 80mg of Accutane (I'm 155 lbs) which to me seems like a lot. A good friend of mine is a pharmacist and she said to start with 40mg and then go up to 80mg after a month to lessen the side effects but I heard that each time you increase your dose, you have to deal with another shot of IB and side effects as your body gets used to the new levels so I think I'll just stick with my reccommended dose.

Day 1 was pretty normal for me except I did have a headache by the end of the day. Headaches for me are quite rare so I do believe that this was related to the medicine. I wear gas permeable contact lenses so I took those out and took an ibuprofin and was fine. I think I'll stick to wearing my contacts in the days and my glasses on evenings and weekends for as long as I can. My eye doc said that my eyes may not dry out as bad as others who wear soft contacts since I have RGP lenses but we'll see. She also told me about some good eye drops and an eye gel to use before bed so I'll let you know how it goes.

Day 2 I wore my glasses all day but still had a bit of an annoying headache lingering. It was nothing I couldn't handle on my own, more of an annoyance than anything. I've been washing my face with Cetaphil instead of my usual acne cleansers and I haven't had any new breakouts yet. I've been moisturising like crazy with lotions, body washes, facial mosturizers, and lip balm to try to alleviate any dryness to come. So far so good. I have also been trying to drink lots of water and every morning I have been taking fish oil pill and vit D (I live in the prairies in Canada where the sun has been hiding). I am thinking about taking a vit E pill too but we'll see.
