Everyone who uses their voice professionally knows that certain things like coffee, smoking, and air conditioning can make you lose your voice a lot faster. What it all boils down to is that a dry mouth is bad for your voice. Recently, I've been really struggling with this. I drink tons of water throughout the day, so that's not the problem. And it's not like it helps anyway.

Now, chewing gum all the time can't be good for you, even if it's sugar free. Too much chewing gum can cause stomach problems. And it only works if you actually chew it. Eating hard candy all the time doesn't seem like a good way to deal with a dry mouth, either.

I've found the perfect solution, though. What I do now is I put a medium sized plastic button in my mouth. I saw this in a movie once and it really works! I don't know why or how, but it works way better than chewing gum. It's also a lot cheaper and a lot cleaner. I can take it out for 5 minutes and then just put it back in. If you keep getting a dry mouth, give it shot smile.png

I went to see my derm today. I really like talking to her. When she saw me she said, "Oh, I see you've been taking your medication!" She wrote me a prescription for 40 mg daily. Right now I'm on 30 mg, but she said that sometimes even an extra 10 mg can cause a lot of discomfort and that it would be better to take it slow. She said she can put me on 50 mg if I feel fine after a month on 40 mg. And that makes sense, I think. I'll be starting 40 mg in twelve days.

I also had some bloodwork done. A CBC, a liver panel, and a lipid panel, to be exact. Everything's in check. My liver's doing great!



Day 42 - Time, Rashes

Time flies. Even when you're not really having fun. I always wanted a quick fix for acne. No, that's what I expected to find. When my derm told me I might be on Accutane for 5 - 10 months, I had some serious doubts. Ten whole months? Or even five? That seemed like forever. I couldn't possibly wait that long! But you know what? It's already day 42 and I have no idea where all that time went. It's crazy, I tell you. If you're considering Accutane, a couple months is really nothing. Trust me.

Now, my skin's doing OK. I still get some whiteheads. I have 1 or 2 most of the time. No pustules. I hope the whiteheads will go away once I get put on a higher dose. I've been getting some rashes. The rash on my hand went away on its own, but then I got a rash on my feet. That went away, too. And then I got a rash around my knees. I also got a rash behind the ears, but I think that's because I'm allergic to the conditioner I was using before. Aside from that, I can't really complain.


Day 32 - Family

Flamingplatypus's latest blog entry got me thinking, why is it that it's usually our families that make us feel really bad about our skin and acne when they're the ones that are supposed to make us feel good/better about ourselves?

For example, almost every time I see my dad he says something that makes me feel like crap ("Your skin's all shiny. Is it supposed to be like that?", "Oh you look worse than the last time I saw you.", etc.). Why? It's not like he has it in for me and I do believe he means well in general. But c'mon! Any thoughts?

At the moment I have only two whiteheads on the face - no pustules - which is great. Got dry lips, a couple of small dry patches on the face, a very mild rash on the back of my right hand, and some minor lower back pain. Nothing I can't handle!



I've been kind of tired the last couple days. Sleepy all day long. Yeah, I haven't been getting enough Zs, and I feel like sleep deprivation is a lot more noticeable on Accutane. But I do feel okay when I get at least 8 hours of sleep.

I was kind of surprised when I looked in the mirror today. I rarely pay any attention to my nose, but today I noticed that it was almost completely blackhead-free. My nose hasn't looked this good in forever!





I used to smoke. I started when I was thirteen. Crazy, I know. And it's not like I grew up in a broken home. I quit last year when I realized I'd been smoking way too much. It had kind of gotten out of control.

Now, I was buying some lottery tickets earlier today and I don't really know why, but I got myself a pack of coconut cigarillos. Later on after work I went to a small get-together and smoked three of them. They were actually pretty nice, but they kind of dried out my mouth and throat. Some people's throats get really dry on Accutane. I wonder if they're smokers. I also took a puff of a friend's cigarette but it was just nasty. I think that right there says a lot about cigarettes. I don't plan on making a habit of this or anything. Smoking is just bad.

I also popped two pustules I had so people wouldn't have to look at nasty ass shit on my face. What I did was I took the tiniest needle I could find, disinfected it with some rubbing alcohol, and just stuck it into the pustules. I didn't squeeze them or anything. I just gently pressed down on them with a paper towel. And guess what? It worked great. No mess, no blood, no irritation, no redness, no nothing! And the pus was gone. I know you're not supposed to pop any pimples on Accutane, but this hardly counts.


More peeling around the lips. The right corner cracked something fierce, but I brought it back to normal with my lip balm and some vaseline. My scalp's kind of dry and I haven't shampooed in 3 days, but that's as far as I'll take it. I've put on some weight. Now, I don't think you could tell just by looking at me, which is weird, but I went from 140 lbs to 144.5 lbs. Must be the sunflower seeds smile.png Then again, even with the sunflower seeds I'm pretty sure I've been eating less fat than before.

I still have one whitehead or pustule on the face most of the time, but when I was putting on some lotion in the morning, I noticed that my shoulders were a lot smoother than usual, and that means tane's finally working its way to my back!

Honestly, I can't wait to be put on a higher dose. If my blood test results are ok, I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to go straight to 60mg. That won't happen for another 38 days, though, because my derm put me on 30 mg for two whole months.

Since my last entry I've gone from having two to three whiteheads/pustules most of the time to one or none at all smile.png which is awesome. And I don't have anything on my scalp, either.

I haven't really noticed any new side effects. There was some flaking on my chin (real flaking, not micro-flaking like before), but Cetaphil Ultra made it stop. My lips and scalp have been getting a little more dry, but it's nothing I can't handle. I also feel like I sweat more easily than I did before.

Here's what I'm using right now:

My skin is so weird right now, I can't even... It looks really dry and micro-flaky after I take a shower, but then when I put on some moisturizer, it looks really oily. It doesn't matter what kind of moisturizer I use. And it was perfect 3 days ago : ( I also got a couple whiteheads today. Nothing serious, though.

No new side effects. But there is one I haven't mentioned yet... now, this is going to sound strange, and it's probably not even the Accutane, but I have a much higher sex drive than I did 2 weeks ago. I don't think it has anything to do with confidence... Before this, I'd had a pretty low sex drive for quite a while.

As far as my strongly anti-inflammatory food project goes, I've come up with two really simple solutions:

I can add some powdered cayenne pepper to my coffee. It tastes really good and cayenne peppers are super anti-inflammatory. More so than most other types of hot peppers. A teaspoon of cayenne pepper can offset almost 2 quarts of milk or 1.5 lbs of gouda huh.png I can definitely do at least 2/3 or 3/4 of a teaspoon every day. I do drink 3 - 4 cups of coffee a day, after all.

Interestingly, ground ginger is just as anti-inflammatory as cayenne peppers. Next time I make myself a pitcher of tea, I'm going to add a teaspoon of ground ginger.


Don't need to shampoo every day now smile.png but I do use conditioner every time I take a shower. My acne's pretty much the same as it was 3 days ago... that is, I'm almost clear, but not quite. My eyes were a little dry today. And my face looks really dry and micro-flaky right after taking a shower now. So not sexy.

Oh and I'm going to try to incorporate some strongly anti-inflammatory foods into my diet:

macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, chili peppers, turmeric, garlic, and flaxseed oil


I saw my dad today and he was amazed at how much better I look already, which just made my day smile.png As far as an IB goes, I'm 95% sure I had one right away. I had a lot of pimples on my forehead on the 2nd day and I hardly ever get any pimples there. My acne's been slowly going away ever since. I'm almost clear. Well, at least on the face and scalp. My back acne doesn't seem to be responding to it at all yet.

I took an iron supplement yesterday and I had some stomach/liver pain, which kind of freaked me out. But it also made me go over my diet and I realized I was getting way too much fat in my diet ever since I started eating 65g of sunflower seeds every day. So I bought low fat milk, cheese, and buttermilk. They actually taste OK smile.png I've never had to worry about fat or carbs since I've always been pretty slim.

I also bought a bathroom scale so I could keep track of my weight. At the moment it's 140 lbs / 63.7 kg.

When it comes to the side effects, I have nothing new to report smile.png Nothing seems to be really bothering me at the moment. My lips are a little chapped, but I only notice it if I don't use my lip balm for more than an hour and a half. My skin's not that itchy anymore. My eyes, nose, and throat aren't particularly dry or anything. It's all good!


Hi y'all, this is my second blog entry. I've decided to post updates whenever I notice any real changes or if something noteworthy happens.

I know I posted last night, but just like that some things changed overnight. Here's what's going on now:

> My hair feels so different. It's amazing. My hair has never felt this good. It's all soft and fluffy and a lot less greasy. My hair was really greasy before even though I shampooed at least once a day. Usually twice a day. My skin is still pretty oily, but definitely less than yesterday.

> My lips are starting to get kind of chapped. Carmex just doesn't cut it anymore. Now I'm using Neutrogena Intense Repair Lip Balm. It's really really good and a little bit goes a long way.

> Almost no itching today. Yesterday, the day before, and the day before that, my skin itched quite a lot. I kept having to touch my face to make the itching go away (I obviously didn't want to scratch my face), but not today.

> The acne on my face seems to be calming down.


Day 6, First Post

I'm a 24 year old male. Up until the beginning of this year I had light - moderate acne that started when I was 14 or 15. It was never that bad. It was never a big deal. Even if I did get a pimple in my hair or ear now and then. Or the occasional cyst. But then my acne started getting way out of control.

To make a long story short, this year has been the worst year of my life. I went through a lot this year. And I ended up with bad scalp acne, some angry pustules, cysts on my cheekbones all the time, and a face full of red marks with some scarring. I tried BP, hydrogen peroxide, sulphur, tea tree oil, and blue/red light therapy. I had to have my wisdom teeth out so I was also put on antibiotics twice. The first time I took antibiotics my acne really improved, but then it just went back to the way it was after a week or two. Nothing happened the second time around. The blue/red light therapy kind of worked, but not really. Sulphur was good at controlling the cystic acne, but that's about it. I was at the end of my rope. I went to see a dermatologist and I told her everything. I was hoping I could get a medium peel. I'd read that certain kinds of medium peels were really good for acne. I knew I didn't want to take any antibiotics. And especially not Accutane. She asked me a lot of questions and then told me that Accutane was pretty much my only choice. That is, unless I was willing to take oral antibiotics and use topicals on my face, scalp, ears, chest, and back. I was sold on Accutane right then and there. She then told me to come back a week later with some blood test results... and I did. She put me on half my body weight in kg / day, which is 30 mg.

So far I don't seem to have any real side effects. My lips do feel kind of weird, but they're not particularly dry or chapped. My skin itches a lot, but it's not really dry. Strange, huh? Although, my face was definitely less oily today than it was 6 days ago. By the way, is it normal to have really oily skin on your face and very dry skin on your legs? It's been like that for as long as I can remember.


Vegetarian with lots of dairy. I've been a vegetarian for 9 years now.

Dietary supplements:

Inneov (hair mass), which is basically zinc, taurine, and a green tea extract, twice a day for 2.5 months now

65 g of sunflower seeds every day (lots of vitamin E, just started)

Calcium and vitamin D fortified rice milk. I drink 3 - 4 cups of coffee with rice milk every day.
