A chronicle of my accutane progress

It has been 11 days since I began my journey, and I suppose I am seeing a little improvement to the existing breakouts I had before I took the plunge. However, I continue to get new, little bumps occasionally which seem to go away quickly. As I have read in other blogs, and I feel the same way, these "little bumps" would probably amount to something more evil and grotesque had I not been on accutane, so I guess that's a way of looking at the glass as half full, eh?

Face and lips are extremely dry...I use Eucerin maybe twice daily and medicated chapstick all the time to keep things controlled...guess this is a daily routine I will grow to love.

Next, I have a few questions for you countless readers (if any at all.) One: Where did you get the impression that you can't drink at all? I specifically asked my derm if I could indulge in a weekend libation, and he said no problem, as long as I wasn't downing the pill with a beer. He was very nonchalant about the response, and it didn't seem to be an issue at all. I have read other blogs saying that their weekend life has been impacted by accutane, and I'm wondering why. Then again, I may get a blood test done next month just to find out the alcohol has doomed me!

Also, is there anyone else out there that was prescribed epiduo in ADDITION to accutane (claravis)? For some reason I feel like these two shouldn't mix. But thats just me.

More updates to come!

Catching you up

Alright, it's time to take this public.

I am 23 years old right now, and I have suffered with moderate to severe acne for the majority of my adolescent and adult life up to this point. I was born and raised in Massachusetts, and, as you may be able to tell from my user name, am on my way to working for the U.S. Government and am currently living in Washington D.C.

At this point, I have visited a total of 3 dermatologists. I have taken at least 4 prescribed oral antibiotics, as well as a myriad of topical creams, and NOTHING has worked. They always seemed to take effect for the first week or so, then my skin seemed to develop an immunity and the acne would return with a vengeance. I was offered an Accutane treatment while in Massachusetts, but after learning of the risks and side effects associated with it, I declined (regrettably)

To make a (very) long story short, I am living here in DC on my own at this point, and my acne is just as bad as it always has been. I don't know if any of you share(d) in my misery, but it is at the point where I avoid looking in mirrors, avoid getting photographed by any means possible, and find it difficult to be taken seriously among my peers. 10 days ago, I finally decided enough is enough and found a local dermatologist who prescribes accutane, and he completely agreed that I was a candidate for the treatment.

In addition to the accutane (claravis), he also prescribed epiduo gel, which is mostly benzyl peroxide and is extremely irritating...considering stopping epiduo until I see the derm again. So far, 10 days into claravis, I honestly have yet to see a change, in fact I have suffered the infamous "initial breakout"...like I needed any more.

I guess what I am looking for out of this blog is any support, suggestions, or comments you guys could offer. I will gladly follow any other blogs, and hope to share my experience with you all.
